Amotekun: Start operation immediately, Ondo monarchs urge South-West govs

Traditional rulers in Ondo State has called on governors in the Southwest to ignore negative comments about Operation Amotekun and conclude necessary arrangements for the immediate take-off of the security outfit in the six states of the zone.

The monarchs, under the umbrella of “De 130 Krown Obas”, spoke through their state president, the Owa-Ale of Ikare-Akoko, Oba Kolapo Adegbite-Adedoyin, while briefing newsmen after their monthly meeting, held in Akure on Friday.

The traditional rulers enjoined the Federal Government to support Southwest governors to achieve the set goals of Operation Amotekun.

According to Adegbite-Adedoyin, it is only when the security outfit is allowed to function effectively that traditional rulers and their subjects can be able to sleep with their two eyes closed.

Adegbite-Adedoyin said that the security outfit must be supported to end the rampant kidnappings, banditry, senseless killings and other crimes in the zone.

He said, “We, as the executives and members of “De 130 Krowns Club of Ondo State”, are the main stakeholders in the spate of armed robbery, kidnappings, banditry, killings by slaughtering and so on, and this “epidemic” is affecting our subjects.

“We do solemnly declare our support for “Operation Amotekun” to counter all these ungodly and inhuman acts of self-destruction.

“The personnel of “Amotekun’ are our native hunters and all who know and understand the terrain of their own localities. What is wrong in watching over ourselves?

“We plead with our governor to do this quickly and “Amotekun” should start operation immediately so as to relieve us, the traditional rulers, particularly in Ondo State, of the act of losing our kinsmen and their properties on daily basis.”

They urged other zones in the country not to see the security outfits as a political body but one to complement the existing government’s security agencies.

“We plead with our politicians, who are from other zones not to see this outfit as a political body, but as supplementary efforts to the Federal Government’s laudable efforts to protect the lives of innocent Nigerians in the Southwest.”

House of Reps begin probe of MDAs’ unspent funds

The House of Representatives has begun the investigation of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government over allocations to Zonal Intervention Programmes, popularly called constituency projects.

On Thursday, the ad hoc committee set up by the leadership of the House to investigate the actual amount released by the regime led by President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); and the administration of his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, expressed concerns over the poor accounting system adopted by the various agencies engaged so far.

The House had on December 10, 2019, resolved to probe the MDAs that failed to execute constituency projects with funds released to them, and their failure to return the funds to the national coffers.

The move was based on the unanimous adoption of a motion moved by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, and five others.

Buhari had earlier on November 19, 2019, said there was little to show for the over N1tn budgeted for constituency projects of the National Assembly members in the last 10 years.

The President said this at the National Summit on Diminishing Corruption in Public Sector organised by the ICPC in conjunction with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, where the Chairman of the commission, Prof Bolaji Owasanoye, presented a report on the first phase of a constituency projects tracking initiative.

The House had condemned the ICPC for allegedly misleading Buhari into criticising the National Assembly, asking how the commission arrived at N1tn when the budgets for the constituency projects over the years were not properly funded.

Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Mr Francis Uduyok, who presided over the investigative hearing on Thursday, said, “There is the need for all the Accounting Officers of the MDAs to submit bank statements and audited accounts from 2009 to 2019 for legislative scrutiny.”

Some of the agencies grilled by the committee include the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

While giving an account of the activities of NEITI, the acting Executive Secretary, Ms Lilian Ekeanyanwu, who had earlier said the agency did not get cash from any of the donor agencies, reversed herself, saying the World Bank gave cash to conduct the oil and gas industry

audit in 2017/2018 when the agency had financial challenges.

In response to the issues bordering on the sums of N351m and N121m

appropriated for financial audit as captured in the agency’s report, Ekeanyanwu explained that the funds were earmarked to conduct industry audit and the consultants engaged during the exercise, in line with the template provided by the office of the Budget Office of the Federation.

The committee, however, requested all the commercial banks and CBN statements from 2009 to date by Thursday.

Police interrogate Yussuf Oko Oloyun’s employees, escorts over killing

The Oyo State Police Command said on Friday it has begun an investigation into the killing of Alhaji Fatai Yussuf, also known as Oko Oloyun.

Oko Oloyun was killed by some hoodlums around Akeroro community on the Abeokuta/Igbo-Ora/Iseyin Road on Thursday.

Late Yussuf, who was travelling in a convoy of two cars with some of his aides, was allegedly ambushed and shot dead by unknown assailants.

According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Police Command, Gbenga Fadeyi, and made available to journalists on Friday, the police said an investigation has commenced into circumstances surrounding his death.

The statement read in parts, “The Commissioner of Police Oyo State Police Command, Shina Olukolu, wishes to put the record straight on the most unfortunate death of Alhaji Fatai Yussuf a.k.a ‘Oko Oloyun’ on Thursday, January 23.

“A report was received by the Divisional Police Officer, Igbo-Ora that around Akeroro Area on the Abeokuta/Igbo-Ora/Iseyin Road, the two-car convoy of the deceased was allegedly ambushed shortly after passing through five different police stop and search teams along the route by yet-to-be-identified assailants who fired at the moving vehicles on the road from the thick forest.”

It said the two-man armed escorts of policemen protecting the deceased engaged the assailants but they managed to escape into the forest after a shot had hit the deceased, who later died as a result of bullet injuries.

“However, an interesting twist to the story was that the deceased probably had earlier detected an alleged bookkeeping records fraud in his Lagos office which subsequently led to the burning/

destruction of some financial/bookkeeping records.

“In addition to other possible motives, a plausible nexus is, therefore, being suspected between the fire incident and the attack on the deceased,” the statement read.

It stated further that some of his staff and his two police escorts were being questioned by a team of crack detectives from the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan with a view to apprehending the suspects.

The statement urged members of the public with credible information to divulge the same to the police.

It promised that the police are on top of the situation, adding, “no matter how long it takes, the police would bring the culprits to justice.”

FG warns against using Aspirin to purify water

The National Economic Council has warned against the use of Aspirin to purify water, saying that could damage the human immune system.

The PUNCH reports that Aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid, is a medication used to treat pain, reduce fever or inflammation.

Apart from the alleged use of Aspirin to purify water, the NEC also warned Nigerians against the use of Paracetamol to cook meat.

The warnings were contained in the report of the NEC meeting held on Thursday and posted on the official website of Nigeria’s Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, on Friday.

The council meeting was chaired by Osinbajo with membership drawn from Governors of the 36 states, the FCT Minister and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Part of the report read, “Also briefing NEC on Polio Eradication and Improved Routine Immunisation in Nigeria, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire, said Nigeria is on course to attaining polio-free status by June 2020, noting that the country has not recorded any new case of polio infection in the last three and half years.

“He said there are incidences of Lassa Fever in some states namely; Edo, Kano, Ondo, Ebonyi and Taraba resulting in 84 cases and 15 deaths, noting that the National Centre for Disease Control has been alerted and is on top of the situation.

“Ehanire reported to council that the use of Paracetamol to cook meat and the consequences that come with it as well as the use of Aspirin to purify water are deadly practices that damage major body organs, warning that these practices should be avoided.

“The Health Minister also briefed the Council on the Coronavirus that emerged in China, which has spread to four border countries such as the United States of America, Thailand, Japan, and Korea.”

I never ordered arrest of any pensioner, Abia Commissioner for Finance insists

Following media reports that he ordered the arrest of two pensioners who allegedly visited him for a meeting in his office on Thursday, the Abia State Commissioner for Finance, Dr Aham Uko has denied the report.

Dr. Uko in a statement he personally signed and obtained by ABN TV described the report as false and malicious, insisting that he was involved in meetings outside his office on the said day.

While stating that the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has prioritized regular payment of pensioners to ensure that they receive their due along with other workers in the state every month, the Commissioner emphasized there no basis to order the arrest of any pensioner or any other law abiding Abian for that matter.

The Police on Thursday arrested two pensioners, Daniel Amugo and Chukwuemeka Augustus, the Chairman and Secretary of a group, called Abia State Concerned Pensioners for allegedly impersonating members of Nigeria Union of Pensioners.

Prior to their arrest, they were said to have held a meeting with the Commissioner in his office in Umuahia, a development the Commissioner denied.

My attention has been drawn to publications in a section of the media alleging that I met with a group of pensioners on Thursday, January 23, 2019, in my office, and subsequently invited security agents to arrest them.

I wish to state, without fear of contradiction, that I did not meet with the said pensioners and never ordered the arrest of any of them. The story as published is false and malicious as I was involved in meetings outside my office on the said day and only read about the purported meeting with the pensioners from the media.

It is important to point out that following the directive of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, we have prioritized regular payment of pensioners to ensure that they receive their due along with other workers in the state every month. There is therefore no basis for me to order the arrest of any pensioner or any other law abiding Abian for that matter.

Breaking: Nobody can unseat Obaseki – Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Friday assured Godwin Obaseki will be re-elected Governor of Edo state.

He said nothing will stop the Governor’s re-election because he has done well and deserves to continue in office.

Obaseki is a member of the All Progressive Congress(APC) while Umahi is a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Umahi was addressing Obaseki’s wife, Betsy and other Southern Governors’ Wife’s who was on a courtesy call to him in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Capital.

The Governor’s Wives were in the state for the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Wifes’ Forum quarterly meeting.

Umahi said: “Power belongs to God and no matter what anybody will dot is God that has the final say and I can assure you Ma, you know as an apostle of the most high God I also prophesy. And because of the good work, your husband is doing for the people of Edo State no man can unseat him.

APC, PDP responsible for Nigeria’s poor rating on corruption – Ohanaeze Youths

Following the recent low rating of Nigeria by Transparency International on corruption perception, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) Worldwide has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to do more in fighting corruption, saying those in the president’s party, the APC and the main opposition party, the PDP are responsible for the low rating.

The Council in a statement signed by the the President General, Mazi Okechukwu isiguzoro and Secretary General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike accused Transparency International’s report which rated Nigeria 146 out of the 180 Countries on the 2019 Corruption Perception index of bias, maintaining that they didn’t take into consideration the achievements recorded by President Muhammadu Buhari in his fight against corruption.

OYC also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to review his tactics in the fight against corruption and ensure that politically exposed people, including former governors, Senators whether in APC or PDP are sent behind bars as a way to send strong message that there is no selective prosecution of corrupt individuals.

Court remands two electricians for allegedly murdering Maersk MD’s wife

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ebute Meta, Lagos on Friday, ordered that two men, who allegedly robbed and murdered the wife of the Managing Director of Maersk Nigeria, Gildas Tohouo, be in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, pending legal advice.

The police charge Olamilekan Oke and Adeyinka Akande, both electricians, with five counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, attempted murder and theft.

Chief Magistrate A.O. Komolafe, who did not take the plea of Oke and Akande,  ordered the police to return the case file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

She adjourned the case until March 26.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, ASP A.A. Adegoke, counsel for the State Criminal Investigating and Intelligence Department, Panti, told the court that Oke and Akande committed the offence on Dec. 8, 2019, at about 7.30 p.m., at Flat 7A, No. 2, Luggard Avenue, Ikoyi.

He alleged that they conspired and robbed a couple, Mr Gildas and Mrs Bernadett Tohovo-Tohovo.

The prosecution alleged that Oke and Akande, cut off electricity from the couple’s house and broke in.

He alleged that they raped Bernadett, stabbed and suffocated her to death before proceeding to stab Gildas on his neck with a knife but he survived the wound.

He said that they stole hard currencies, N48,790 and two iPhones belonging to the deceased.

He said the offence contravened the provision of sections 223, 230, 233, 260 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Leaving Manchester United was ‘right decision’ – Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku believes he made the right decision to leave Manchester United for a new challenge at Inter Milan, saying he had to “re-find” himself after a difficult time at Old Trafford.

The Belgium striker joined United from Everton for £75 million ($98 million) in July 2017, scoring 42 goals in his two seasons at the club before moving to Inter in August last year.

He has been in superb form for Antonio Conte’s side, scoring 18 goals to help the club sustain a challenge for the Serie A title.

Those performances, and United’s reported interest in signing a striker this month after Marcus Rashford’s back injury, have raised questions as to the wisdom of allowing Lukaku to leave Old Trafford.

But, in an interview with Sky Sports News, the 26-year-old said the decision was his and it had worked out well for United as well.

“I think I had to re-find myself,” he said. “Last year was difficult for me on the professional side because stuff was not going how I wanted and I was not performing as well… and I just came to the conclusion that it was time for me to change the environment.

“I made my decision around March, and I went to the manager’s office (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer) and I told him it was time for me to find something else.”

“I think I made the right decision and I think Manchester United now has made space for the younger players to come through so I think it was a bit of a win-win situation for both of us,” he added.

The Belgian was signed for United by Jose Mourinho and had an excellent first season, scoring 27 goals as United finished second in the Premier League.

But Mourinho was sacked in December 2018 after a disappointing start to the season, with Lukaku also unable to discover his best form.

Former Chelsea manager Conte has managed to bring the best out of Lukaku this season, pairing him with Argentine forward Lautaro Martinez to lethal effect.

Lukaku said the Italian knew how to extract the most from his whole squad but revealed he was not afraid to get tough with the players

 

“The manager, he tells it straight to your face if you’re doing well or wrong,” he said.

“You work hard, you train hard and you play,” he added. “If you don’t do what he says, you don’t play. You know where you stand — and that’s what I respect about him.”

Abia Police arrest two pensioners over alleged impersonation

Police in Abia on Thursday arrested two pensioners in Umuahia for allegedly organising a protest in Umuahia against alleged state government’s failure to pay their pension arrears.

The arrested persons included Daniel Amugo and Chukwuemeka Augustus, the Chairman and Secretary of a group, called Abia State Concerned Pensioners.

Speaking with newsmen, the Vice Chairman of the group, John Kalu, said that police arrested the two people after their meeting with the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Aham Uko, in his office.

He said that they wanted to embark on a peaceful protest in the city, adding that the commissioner, however, invited their leaders to his office for a meeting.

He said that they were in the meeting when the commissioner allegedly received a phone call, adding that shortly after the call, some police operatives met them on their way after the meeting and took them to the Umuahia Area Command.

The commissioner however denied holding any meeting with pensioners in his office.

Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the pensioners were arrested for impersonating the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Abia.

Ogbonna said that the command received a petition accusing them of impersonation.

He said that the matter was being investigated, adding that the national leadership of NUP had disowned the protesters.
