COVID-19: Dangote donates N200m to contain spread in Nigeria

Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has pledged N200 million to support the federal government’s effort at containing the spread of Covid-19 (CoronaVirus) in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of ADF, Zouera Youssoufou, in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, said the donation was part of the Foundation’s cardinal objective.

Ms Youssoufou said the foundation had earmarked N124 million to support facilities that would assist prevent, assess and respond to health events at Points of Entry to ensure National Health Security.

She said other areas the foundation is supporting include surveillance and epidemiology, where facilities worth N36 million will be provided by the foundation to support the government’s effort.

She said the foundation would also donate N48 million for case management and training of health workers.

Ms Youssoufou recalled that the Aliko Dangote Foundation committed about N1 billion to the fight against Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Africa.

She said the foundation supported the Nigerian government’s Ebola containment efforts through investments that built resilience and strengthened Nigeria’s health system in a manner expected to endure beyond Ebola crisis.

She said the foundation during the Ebola crisis, supported the government through the provision of funding for the establishment of the National Ebola Emergency Operations Centre (EEOC) in Yaba, Lagos.

She said the foundation provided 12 units of Thermal Cameras across Nigeria’s International Airports with training for 160 staff of the Federal Ministry of Health, Port Health Services, on using cameras.

Ms Youssoufou added that the foundation provided World Health Organisation certified Personal Protective Equipment against Ebola, and also donated three million dollars to support Africa Union’s intervention against Ebola in West Africa.

She said complete logistics support for the returnee volunteers on Ebola intervention across countries ravaged by Ebola was provided by the foundation.

Also Speaking, Kathleen Whimp, World Bank, Operations Manager, identified four thematic areas to tackling the spread of COVID-19.

Ms Whimp said the areas are: regular communication with the public, contact tracing, training of volunteers and international co-operations.

Commenting, Director, Health Emergency Preparedness and Response, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, John Oladejo, said there existed challenges in battling the outbreak.

“Inadequate isolation centres, contact tracing, training of volunteers, international cooperation, fake news and panic, were some of the challenges facing COVID-19 outbreak in the country,” he said.

COVID-19 was first reported in Wuhan China on December 31, 2019, and has since spread to 64 other countries.

Nigeria on February 28 confirmed its first case of COVID-19, making it the third African country to confirm the virus.

The virus was brought into the country by an Italian citizen who entered Nigeria on February 25 from Milan, Italy for a brief business visit.

The index case was confirmed on February 27 and is presently being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.

Coronavirus: Nigeria Ministers Undergo Thorough Screening Ahead Of FEC Meeting

Nigeria Ministers were screened for coronavirus on Wednesday ahead of the Federal Executive Council meeting by the State House.

Their body temperature was checked as they arrived at the Presidential Villa for the meeting about 10.23 am, The PUNCH reports.

They were also given hand sanitisers to disinfect their hands.

The ministers were screened twice.

The first screening took place as they alighted from their cars and entered the main reception to Villa.

At the entrance to the Executive Council Chambers, another screening took place before they finally entered the venue for the commencement of proceedings.

Permanent secretaries and other officials from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, who came for the meeting, were also thoroughly screened.

The PUNCH had reported on Wednesday that the screening started fully on Tuesday when all workers and visitors to the Presidential Villa were asked to go through the process.

President Muhammadu Buhari is presiding over the FEC meeting.

The Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation; the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs Folasade Yemi-Esan; and the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno ( retd. ), are also attending the FEC meeting.

I spend over $2m on charity monthly — Father Mbaka

THE founder and director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria, AMEN, Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka said he spends over $2 million monthly for various charity works he embarks on.

Mbaka disclosed this shortly after presenting N18.8 million to the management of Annunciation Specialist Hospital, Emene, Enugu, on behalf of Multi-Life Savers for the Less Privileged, a non-governmental arm of his ministry.

He gave out N10 million to 200 select members of the Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria for empowerment coupled with a bag of rice each.

According to Mbaka, the N18.8 million was to cover accumulated free medical services that the hospital had rendered to indigent people on his bill, amounting to over N14 million, while the balance covers a deposit for other indigent patients that would require the services of the Catholic health facility in future.

According to him, the hospital is one of several health facilities where his foundation usually referred indigent patients to receive free qualitative medical care, to save them from dying unduly.

He said: “We are basically here to continue the relationship that this wonderful health facility has with our charity organisation and Adoration Ministry, Enugu.

“We presented a bank draft worth N18.8 million to them to cover the accumulated bills of indigent patients they had treated at our instance, plus a deposit for other indigent patients that would come here in future.

“We do this every day and it is on record that there is no month that I don’t spend at least $2 million silently, on charity. So, this visit is just one out of several charity outings that we undertake without any publicity.

“I represent the ministry here, as the chief servant. What we are doing is physical but I am also here, on behalf of the supernatural part of the exercise.

“This programme is purely inter-religious, inter-tribal and interdenominational. Among the beneficiaries are Catholics, Pentecostals, and Muslims, among others.”

Coronavirus: I’m On Self-Isolation, Not Quarantine – NCDC DG, Ihekweazu

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Mr Chikwe Ihekweazu, has said that he is on self-isolation, and not quarantine as reported over fears of being infected with Coronavirus.

The NCDC DG who was part of a high-level delegation by the World Health Organisation (WHO), returned from China on February 24.

He explained on Channels Television Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, that he has been in isolation for nine days as part of the regulations made, that 14-day isolation must be observed.

“I am on self-isolation; this is a procedural thing because I was part of a high-level delegation by the World Health Organisation, there were 12 global health leaders across the world, and I was the only African and it was a huge privilege to be part of this team.

“I’ve been back for 9 days and I have 5 more days, I got back to Nigeria on the 24th, I’ve been doing my work from home just in respect to the regulations we made because we put out the guidelines that we should stay at home for 14 days,” he stated.

Dr Ihekweazu, whose visit to China made him understand the response level, said the report produced by the delegation has influenced the response of the world to the COVID-19 virus.

He maintained that since his return, he has conducted a series of tests to justify that he has not been infected by the novel virus.

“We went to China, several cities to understand the response and the reports we produced have influenced the response of the rest of the world.

“Quarantine is when you are kept in a place and enforced by the military or police to protect the population.

“Meanwhile I have had series of tests just to assure everyone and I am fine doing well,” he maintained.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, had briefed the senate leadership on Tuesday that the NCDC DG is currently under self-quarantine for possible infection of the deadly coronavirus.

BREAKING: Nigeria Now Tops South Africa As The Continent’s Biggest Economy

As if a recession wasn’t enough bad news for South Africa, it’s now confirmed as the continent’s second-largest economy.

The answer to the question of whether South Africa or Nigeria, the two countries that account for almost half of sub-Saharan Africa’s gross domestic product, is the biggest economy on the continent has long depended on which exchange rate you use for the West African nation. But now both the official naira rate of 306 per dollar and the weaker market exchange rate of around 360 that almost all investors use put Nigeria tops.

Nigeria’s economic growth beat forecasts in the fourth quarter, helping its economy to expand the most in four years in 2019 as oil output increased and the central bank took steps to boost credit growth. GDP in the West African country stood at $476 billion or $402 billion, depending on the rate used.

South Africa’s economy went in the opposite direction.

It slumped into a second recession in consecutive years, contracting more than projected in the fourth quarter as power cuts weighed on output and business confidence. For the full year, expansion was 0.2%, the least since the global financial crisis, and even less than the central bank and government estimated. Based on an average rand-dollar exchange rate of 14.43 for the year, GDP was $352 billion.

Projections show Nigeria’s economy will continue to grow faster. While the International Monetary Fund cut its forecast for Nigeria’s 2020 growth to 2% from 2.5% last month due to lower oil prices, South Africa’s GDP is forecast to expand only 0.8%.

US Offers N2.5B Reward For Information Leading To Shekau’s Arrest

The United States, US Department of State has offered a $7million reward for information leading to Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau’s arrest.

This was made known in a statement posted on their official French Language Twitter page.

This is not the 1st time the US will offer a compensation on information leading to the arrest of the terrorist. In the year, it offered same $7 million to anyone who could assist them in effecting his arrest.

Shekau has been regarded as the cat with many lives, as he was reportedly killed by the Nigerian government on several occasions, only for him to re-surface with more threats.

BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT ABUBAKAR SHEKAU

Abubakar Shekau is the leader of Jama’atu Ahl as-Sunnah il-Da’awati wal-Jihad, more commonly known as Boko Haram. Boko Haram, which means “Western education is forbidden,” is a Nigeria-based terrorist organization that seeks to overthrow the current Nigerian government and replace it with a regime based on Islamic law.

The group has existed in various forms since the late 1990s. There are reported communications, training, and weapons links between Boko Haram, al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), al-Shabaab, and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which may strengthen Boko Haram’s capacity to conduct terrorist attacks.

Shekau was previously the group’s second-in-command. In July 2010, Shekau publicly claimed leadership of Boko Haram and threatened to attack Western interests in Nigeria. Later that month, Shekau issued a second statement expressing solidarity with al-Qaida and threatening the United States. Under Shekau’s leadership, Boko Haram’s operational capabilities have grown.

The group set off its first vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) in June 2011, and has increasingly utilized IEDs in attacks against soft targets. Boko Haram’s August 26, 2011 vehicle-bomb attack on the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria marked the group’s first lethal operation against Western interests.

At least 23 people were killed, and 80 more were injured, in the attack. A purported Boko Haram spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack and promised future targeting of U.S. and Nigerian government interests.

On May 1, 2012, less than one week after the group bombed a Nigerian newspaper building in Abuja, Boko Haram issued a video statement threatening more attacks on local and international news outlets, including the Voice of America and Sahara Reporters, a New York-based media service.

Under Shekau’s leadership Boko Haram has continually targeted young children. On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped close to 300 girls from their school in northern Nigeria. In a video message released three weeks later, Shekau claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, calling the girls slaves and threatening to sell them in the market.

On June 21, 2012, the U.S. Department of State designated Shekau a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224.

Coronavirus: Proposed 2 Weeks Break For Sensitization Still Under Consideration – Reps

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, said the two weeks suspension of plenary being considered by the House in order to sensitize Nigerians of the deadly disease has not commenced and is equally subject to reconsideration by the House.

A statement made available to ABN TV, by the Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, stated that the House also considered a motion on the urgent need for emergency response and need to contain the deadly coronavirus.

According to Kalu, Some of the prayers include the need for the leadership of the National Assembly to set up an ad-hoc committee to liaise with the relevant health agencies to ensure efforts to combat the virus are intensified

The statement reads in full,

“The House of Representatives, in plenary on Tuesday the 3rd of March, 2020,
considered a motion on the urgent need for emergency response and need to contain the deadly coronavirus in Nigeria. The motion was thoroughly debated and passed.”

“Some of the prayers include the need for the leadership of the National Assembly to set up an ad-hoc committee to liaise with the relevant health agencies to ensure efforts to combat the virus are intensified. The House also called for a better orientation of the disease by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture through relevant media outfits to keep Nigerians abreast of the situation.”

“An amendment to the prayers of the motion calling on the House to suspend plenary for two weeks to work and contribute its legislative efforts by helping to sensitize constituents on the coronavirus and how it is being handled was also adopted.”

“The amendment also urged the management of the National Assembly to put measures in place to ensure the virus does not find a place to fester in the National Assembly.”

“It is, however, necessary to clarify that the two weeks suspension of plenary has not
commenced and is subject to reconsideration by the House.”

“The leadership of the House is to meet and consider the arrangement necessary before a date can be fixed for the sensitization of constituents by their respective lawmakers, therefore, the business of lawmaking continues on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.”
