Platini Loses FIFA Ban Appeal At European Human Rights Court

0

Former UEFA head Michel Platini has lost his appeal at the European Court of Human Rights against a four-year ban from football over a $2 million (1.8m euro) payment from then FIFA president Sepp Blatter in 2011.

A chamber of seven judges at the Strasbourg-based court ruled Thursday that Platini’s “suspension from football-related professional activity was justified”.

“The court found in particular that, having regard to the seriousness of the misconduct, the senior position held by Mr Platini in football’s governing bodies and the need to restore the reputation of the sport and of FIFA, the sanction did not appear excessive or arbitrary,” it said.

Platini’s application, the court ruled, was “inadmissible”.

FIFA banned Platini, its then vice president, in 2015 over the payment he received, sparking years of bitter recriminations from the now 64-year-old Frenchman and a falling out with his former ally Blatter.

BREAKING: Ronaldinho Arrested Over Fake Passport Claims

0

Brazil legend Ronaldinho has been arrested in Paraguay for allegedly using false documentation to enter the South American country.

The 39-year-old, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, was detained in the Resort Yacht & Golf Club Paraguayo along with his brother Roberto on Wednesday night, the Ministry of Interior of Paraguay has confirmed.

According to La Nacion, passports were found in the hotel bearing the names of Ronaldinho and Roberto with Paraguayan nationality.

Both the brothers remained in the hotel suite overnight, with Paraguayan authorities due to issue a statement on Thursday morning.

An official statement from the Paraguayan police had earlier revealed that Ronaldinho and his entourage had been invited to Paraguay by casino owner Nelson Belotti.

The former Brazil international was expected to hold several publicity events, with the media invited to witness his interaction with fans and dignitaries.

Ronaldinho is currently without a Brazilian passport because of an environmental fine he received in 2018.

The former Barcelona star and his brother were convicted of illegally building a fishing trap at Lake Guaiba in 2015 without proper licensing in a permanent preservation area.

That conviction saw the duo handed an $8.5 million (£6.5m) fine in November 2018 and after failing to pay up, Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice decided to stop Ronaldinho from being able to leave the country.

Despite being unable to travel out of Brazil, Ronaldinho was unveiled as one of the country’s new ambassadors for tourism in September last year.

Literally stranded in his homeland, the former AC Milan star said at the time that he was trying to make the most of his situation after accepting a role to promote Brazil’s tourism.

“Tourism is very important for generating jobs and regaining our image internationally,” Ronaldinho said at his unveiling as an ambassador.

Ronaldinho enjoyed a distinguished playing career across South America and Europe – winning the Champions League, La Liga, Serie A and Copa Libertadores.

He also secured numerous individual honours, including the 2005 Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

The Porto Alegre-born forward lifted the World Cup in South Korea and Japan in 2002 and won the Copa America with his national team in 1999.

Abia PDP Jittery, Afraid To Face Us At LG Election – APC

0

The Abia state chairman of the APC, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa has accused the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the state of being afraid to face it at the local government election.

He alleged that the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has refused to fix a particular date for the conduct of local government election to take place but rather making use of caretaker committee, emphasizing that the use of caretaker committee to run the local governments is alien to the constitution.
He stated this in a chat with ABN TV in Umuahia on Monday.

He described as nebulous comment the governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s pronouncement that the local government election in the state will take place between now and September without a definite date and timetable.

“Caretakerism is an aberration at all levels. The constitution made it clear that a democratic system of administration of local government is guaranteed by the constitution. Any other thing any other person is doing is illegality” he added.

He challenged the governor to fix a date for local government election in the state to see the performance of APC as a testament for what will be expected in 2023.

Coronavirus: “Italian Man Recovering, Already Eating Amala” — Agency

0

According to the Lagos State Biobank, the Italian man who tested positive for coronavirus in Nigeria is fast recovering and already eating amala.

This was made known by the Centre Manager of the Lagos State Biobank, Dr Bankole Akinwale, at the briefing and sensitization of religious leaders on Coronavirus and other communicable diseases, organized by the State Ministry of Home Affairs, held at Christ the Light Chapel, Alausa, Ikeja.

He said:

A lot of things are flying in the social media but the Lagos State Government has been so active, Mr Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, prior to the latest development had established the incident command system cost over $ 4 million, in collaboration with Canadian government, is a coordinating centre to coordinate the preparedness and control system, otherwise work will be done haphazardly and there would not be a uni-directional flow of order.

“In 2014-15, while we had Ebola, one of the major reasons why we had serious issues in West Africa before Nigeria intervened was because there was no command system. Every organization that came was doing it on their own and before you knew, it had escalated. We started the command centre here with Mr. Governor, as Chief Incident Commander and Commissioner for Health is deputy incident commander.

“Now, what did we do beyond that. We have upgraded to activating Emergency Operation Centre where we have different groups that are handling issues relating to the disease. One of the groups; is those that will be searching, surveillance, searching for possible cases. Another group is those at the point of entries into the country, the airports, like MMIA and borders.

“Another group is those that disinfect by using chemicals to flit and clean any environment we had cases and kill the viruses that must have been deposited at the place. Another group is the one to create awareness and sensitises. Another group will diagnose the cases to determine if it’s actually coronavirus.

“Lagos is the only state and Nigeria, the country in West Africa with biosecurity facility, while South Africa has one. This shows that Lagos State is a country within a country. It’s also a signal that we have pro-active, responsive government in Lagos.

“That’s why we have been able to handle the case when it came into the country, it didn’t take us time to diagnose if it’s actually COVID -19. There is no state in Nigeria that has it except Lagos, that’s why Ogun State referred it to Lagos.

“As at today, we are expected to check two other patients being suspected for COVID-19. If we do not have such facility how do we diagnose. The normal laboratories can’t do it because it is risky to manage such a highly infectious virus.

“The first case is a Chinese man while the second is a Nigerian who just flew in from Dubai few days again and started developing severe body pains and other symptoms.

“The patient showed up at the facility on Monday to make the complaint, but we asked the patient to come back today for possible diagnosis and further action.

“The bio-security facility is not only for diagnoses but also as research centre where we look into ways of developing diagnostic kits. Kits are being imported into Nigeria with so much money spent.

“Since the case broke-out, everyday, we meet and review situation and continue on the next step. So far so good, no other confirmed case, the index case is doing well. He is doing perfectly well. We are also collecting follow up samples to see how well we are doing in terms of achievement. We are proud to say, we are doing well. The viral dose is dropping, appetite has increased, the man is interacting very well and eating our local food ‘Amala.’ He is enjoying our meal. We are hoping for the best.

“In the case we are handling, we have gone to decontaminate the hotel where the Italian lodged and keep tracing the contacts and following upon them. The essence of that is to break and stop the spread of the disease”.

Oshiomhole: ‘No Man Is God‘ – Obaseki Celebrates

0

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State on Wednesday described the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by an Abuja High Court as a verdict for the party unity and for the people of the state.

The suspension of the embattled national chairman, he said, will provide the needed atmosphere for peace in the party in the state.

The suspension meted on the national chairman has finally proven to all in the state that no man is God, he further said, adding that today is a great day for the party in the state.

I Am Still In Charge As APC National Chair — Oshiomhole

0

Adams Oshiomhole has insisted that he remains the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite the order of court that he should the vacate office early on Wednesday.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem, Oshiomhole said he remains the Chairman because APC’s lawyers had filed for a stay of execution of the judgment ordering his removal from office.

“Our legal department is studying the matter and we have filed for a stay of execution and appealed the ruling. With those processes, Oshiomhole remains the National Chairman of the party,” Ebegbulem said in the statement.

Also, the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC has approved the nomination of Arch. Waziri Bulama as the party’s Acting National Secretary.

The NWC in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu also approved the appointment of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as Deputy National Chairman (South) and Mr. Paul Chukwuma as National Auditor.

“The decision was reached on January 14, 2020, during the meeting of the NWC at the party’s National Secretariat.

“Following the resignation of H.E. Mai Mala Buni as the party’s National Secretary in May 2019 prior to his election as the Governor of Yobe State, the party subsequently gave notice for a replacement from the zone.

“The NWC has also approved the nominations of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as the Deputy National Chairman (South) and Mr. Paul Chukwuma as the National Auditor following nominations from the respective zones.”

Sometimes, you seem to lack words to use when acknowledging someone’s appreciation.

Here are some other words you can substitute “you are welcome” with:

Anytime

Sure

It’s okay

Never mention

Glad to have helped

It’s all gray

Cool

Not at all

My pleasure

You got it

It was nothing

Not a problem

Don’t mention it

No worries

I’m happy to help

Happy to serve you

Glad to be of any assistance

Oh anytime

Of course

It’s alright

All of these phrases mean that the person was happy to help you and that you shouldn’t worry about thanking them. In other words, they mean, “You’re welcome!”
