All 3 Suspected Coronavirus Cases In Lagos Test Negative

0
The three suspected cases of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) isolated in Lagos on Thursday have tested negative to the disease.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this on Friday, said all three have been discharged.

In a tweet, Abayomi said: “All the three #COVID19 suspected cases; travellers from France, England and China whose samples were collected yesterday for analysis have tested negative and they have been discharged.”

Abayomi had, on Thursday, disclosed that the three identified cases were being tested in the Lagos isolation centre in Yaba.

He said one of those involved is a Nigerian who returned from France four days ago, another came in from the United Kingdom while the third was from China.

Earlier, at a press conference in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, confirmed that two of the three suspected cases were negative.

Ehanire, who did not give details, however noted that the result of the third case was pending and would be released as soon as it was ready.

In an update during the briefing, the Minister maintained that Nigeria had only one confirmed case.

He said Nigerians should stop profiling suspected cases.

“As of the three cases, one of them, we are expecting the result; it takes some hours for the results to come out. We must go away from the idea of focusing on Chinese or any particular nationality because a case that entered Nigeria, which is the index case is not Chinese.

“If we are profiling and focusing on the wrong areas, we risk losing the right thinking.”

The minister said the government had strengthened screening of passengers at the country’s entry-points, and soon, passengers departing the country will be screened too.

Nigerian Pastor Jailed For 34 Years For Raping, Impregnating Children In UK

An evangelical pastor was jailed for 34 years in Britain on Friday, after he was convicted of a catalogue of rape and sexual abuse against children and adults over two decades.

A judge said self-styled prophet Michael Oluronbi carried out “one of the worst cases of sexual abuse” against children to come to court.

Oluronbi, 60, who is originally from Nigeria, was convicted of 15 counts of rape, seven counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault at a trial that ended in January.

The court was told there were at least 88 separate occasions on which he raped his victims, who are now adults.

Some offences were carried out after he convinced some of his victims to take part in “spiritual bathing”, which he said would “cleanse” them of evil spirits.

Birmingham Crown Court in central England was told some of his young female victims became pregnant several times.

But Oluronbi, a trained pharmacist, took them to abortion clinics to hide his crimes.

The minister’s wife, Juliana, 58, was jailed for 11 years after being found guilty of three charges of aiding and abetting rape after helping arrange some of the terminations.

Judge Sarah Buckingham called Oluronbi “arrogant, selfish and vain”, adding: “You abused your position of trust.

“They (his victims) trusted you like God…. In my judgment, your offending must be one of the worst cases of sexual abuse of multiple children to come before the courts.”

Oluronbi, described by his victims as “controlling”, was arrested when one of those he abused came forward. He was detained by police last year at Birmingham airport on his way to Nigeria.

When asked about the offences, which took place in Birmingham and London dating back to the 1980s, the court was told he said: “The devil made me do it.”

The court was told Oluronbi was linked to a Birmingham branch of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, which was founded in Nigeria.

He set up a splinter group separate from the church and at another address for about 40 adults and children, where he began his practice of “spiritual bathing”, jurors heard.

Evangelical churches are hugely popular in Nigeria, predominately in the Christian south.

APC Crisis: Police Bar Oshiomhole’s Aides From Accessing Party Secretariat

0

Efforts by some aides of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole were Friday rebuffed by a detachment of security operatives who have continued to lay a siege to the party premises.

The policemen, drawn from the Counter-Terrorism Unit CTU, Mobile and regular forces had sealed the party Secretariat from morning till evening, turning back staff, visitors and journalists who wanted to access the building.

As at 6:20pm on Friday, the Secretariat was still sealed.

However, at about 3:30pm, some men who security sources later described as aides of Oshiomhole came around and made to access the secretariat. Upon discussions with security operatives at the gate of the secretariat, they left.

A sources dasclosed that the national chairman and some members of the National Working Committee NWC were locked in several hours of meeting with the Inspector General of Police IGP, Muhammed Adamu.

Shortly after, at about 4:20pm, special forces from the Department of State Services DSS riding in five power bikes came to the secretariat.

An hour later, some DSS operatives also came in two black Hilux Vans. It was not immediately clear the mission of the two teams who later left in a single convoy at 6pm.

However, APC strategists were left pondering several options last night.

One of the options is to get the president to ask Oshiomhole to obey the FCT High Court order which upheld his suspension, but the major point of disagreement is about who takes charge in his absence.

While those considered as loyalists of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu want the newly appointed Deputy National Chairman, South, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi to take charge, those considered as anti-Tinubu, however, want the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Chief Victor Giadom who has been acting as National Secretary to hold the fort.
