2 Months Dry Fasting Kills Woman In Delta (Photo)

A woman in Sapele area of Delta state has lost her life after agreeing to embark on 2 months of dry fasting.

Oghenek, a journalist in Sapele reported that the sad incident happened at MTN Road, Okirigwhere. He disclosed that the woman, her husband, son, and a friend locked themselves inside the house for the 2 months in order to complete the fasting.

He added that the family had been drinking water for the past two months which has left them emaciated. It was also discovered that it was the friend who visited them that convinced the family to embark on the dry fasting.

The woman’s son whose picture is attached to the story is said to be fat before, but because of the fasting, he has become very thin and weak. It was also found out that the visitor had been throwing away food given to the family by concerned neighbours.

BREAKING: Boris Johnson To Return To Work On Monday

Boris Johnson is planning to return to work on Monday to take control of the response to the coronavirus crisis.

The Prime Minister has been recovering at his countryside retreat in Chequers after being discharged from hospital earlier this month.

Mr Johnson – who spent three days in the ICU – has told his aides to set up meetings with cabinet ministers next week to get him up to speed, as reported by The Telegraph.

A source told the newspaper: ‘He’s not the sort of person who is very good at doing nothing. In truth he has been working pretty much full time for the past week.

‘The fact that he had a telephone audience with the Queen on Wednesday night shows you that he considers himself to be fit for duty.’

Boris Johnson was well enough to hold his regular audience with the Queen last night, Downing Street confirmed today.

And the Prime Minister has been getting regular updates from his aides while recuperating.

Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State has been in charge of the Government since Mr Johnson was admitted to hospital at the start of the month.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman told reporters last night: ‘The Prime minister spoke with the First Secretary of State yesterday and he had an audience with Her Majesty the Queen by telephone last night.

Pressed on the PM’s condition, he added: ‘He has spoken with No 10 staff and with the First Secretary of State and he has had a call with the US president and with Her Majesty the Queen.

‘He is being sent regular updates on government business but it is still the case that he is not doing government work.’

Donald Trump last night revealed some of the details of his call with Boris Johnson on Tuesday, saying he sounded ‘sharp and energetic’.

At a press briefing on COVID-19 the US President said:  ‘He [Boris] called me a few days ago. I will tell you he sounded incredible,’ Mr Trump said.

‘I was actually surprised. I thought he’d be like ‘Oh Donald, how are you?’. He was ready to go. I’m very surprised to tell you. It’s like the old Boris, tremendous energy, tremendous drive.

‘I was very surprised because he called me, almost you know, pretty close to when he got out of the hospital.

‘I think he’s doing great, I think he’s doing great. He was so sharp and energetic, pretty incredible, he’s an incredible guy.

‘He’s a friend of ours and a friend of mine. He loves our country, he loves his country a lot, but he loves our country, he respects our country and they’re lucky to have him over there.’

Despite indications Mr Johnson is getting better a picture of him participating in the Clap for Carers at 8 pm on Thursday was not released.

Ramadan Begins On Friday, Says Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Thursday night announced the commencement of the Ramadan fast on Friday, 24th April, 2020

He confirmed that the new moon had been sighted.

Regarded as a holy month, Ramadan is the period when Muslims observe fasting and prayers.

The Sultan also directed Muslims to shun congregational gatherings and maintain physical distancing throughout Ramadan as part of measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

BREAKING: Nigeria Records 108 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Now 981

108 new cases of coronavirus were on Thursday night reported by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), bringing the total cases to 981.

In the new cases reported, Lagos had 78 cases, 14 in FCT, five in Ogun, four in Gombe, three in Borno, two in Akwa Ibom, one in Kwara, one in Plateau.

According to the NCDC, “As at 23rd of April,  there are 108 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. 197 have been discharged with 31 deaths. There are 27 states with confirmed cases in Nigeria.”

BREAKING!! COVID-19: Abia Govt Traces, Isolates 209 Index Cases Contacts

The Abia state government says it has traced and isolated no fewer than 209 contacts of the two index COVID-19 cases in the state as at 8 am of Thursday, April 23, 2020.

It says this was achieved with the assistance of the State Rapid Response Team and the medical protocol sub-committee of the inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19, in conjunction with the team from Federal Medical Center (FMC), Umuahia.

A release made available to ABN TV from the office of the Commissioner for Internation, Chief John Okiyi Kalu says this process which continued today (Thursday) covered mainly 3 LGAs of the state which include Ikwuano, Ukwa West and Umuahia North.

He added that all those traced and isolated are under surveillance and a team from World Health Organization (WHO) is providing support.

“Both index cases, who are above 70 years with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and left ventricular failure are stable and receiving care at the FMC isolation center in Umuahia. One of the patients that was previously supported with oxygen is currently breathing well without any respiratory aid.

“All the medical personnel involved in management of the patients and their family members are currently in isolation with samples from some already collected for testing.

“We are awaiting results for the suspected case who is resident off Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, and will inform appropriately as soon as the result returns from the NCDC testing facility.

“All Abians and residents are strongly advised to continue to observe all the previously issued guidelines from NCDC and the state inter-ministerial committee, including compulsory use of face masks, regular handwashing with soap under running water, use of hand sanitizers, maintenance of social distancing and avoid leaving their houses except to buy food and drugs.

“We urge our people to ensure that they abide by the existing lockdown order especially at this time of ongoing contact tracing when we do not know who may have been infected as enforcement agencies have also been directed to prosecute defaulters through the mobile courts and in line with the ABIA STATE INFECTIOUS DISEASES (EMERGENCY PREVENTION) REGULATIONS 2020

DIG Celestine C. Okoye landed in Ebem on a Helicopter to commiserate with the family of late Friday Ifeanyi Arunsi.

He was taken around the community by the T.C Chairman of Ohafia local government area, Hon. Fred Eke Idika and other top police officials from the Abia state police command.

Recall that Abia state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu through his deputy, Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu, the former Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ene Okon have all paid condolence visits to the bereaved family of Late Mr. Friday Ifeanyi Arunsi

The team had also commiserated with those who sustained a varied degree of injuries after the careless shooting by the drunk police officer, a situation that led to a peaceful protest by youths of the area.

UK’s COVID-19 Vaccine Trial Injection Starts [VIDEO]

The first volunteers for the coronavirus vaccine trial have received their first doses as scientists desperately try to fight the illness which has now claimed the lives of 18,738 in the UK.

Scientists at the Jenner Institute, University of Oxford, have begun the first human trial in Europe by administering the trial injections, which were developed in under three months, to more than 800 volunteers on Thursday.

The trial will see half of the candidates injected with the coronavirus vaccine, made from a weakened version of the common cold virus from chimpanzees, while the other half will be given a meningitis vaccine.

The volunteers will not be told which vaccine they have received.

Microbiologist and volunteer Elisa Granato told the BBC: ‘Well I’m a scientist so of course, I want to try and support the scientific process wherever I can and since I don’t study viruses I felt a bit useless these days so I felt this is a very easy way for me to support the cause.’

Researchers at the institute, who created the vaccine using technology they have previously used for successfully treating diseases such as Mers and Ebola, are ‘confident’ that the trial will pave the way for millions of vaccines being made available to the public by September.

By taking a version of the common cold virus, ChAdOx1, and modifying it so that it does not grow in humans, scientists hope the process will activate an immune response that will protect humans.

Professor of vaccinology at the Jenner Institute, Sarah Gilbert, who led the pre-clinical research, said she was 80 percent confident about the outcome of the vaccine.

She told the BBC:  ‘Personally I have a high degree of confidence in this vaccine.

‘Of course, we have to test it and get data from humans. We have to demonstrate it actually works and stops people from getting infected with coronavirus before using the vaccine in the wider population.’

Lydia Guthrie, who is also taking part in the trial, told BBC Radio 4’s The World At One programme: ‘They’ve (the clinical team) been very clear with participants about the potential risk, and vaccine trials are very carefully regulated, so we’ve had to give explicit consent at every step of the way.

‘They’re really clear with us that as participants we can pull out at any time if we change our minds.’

Once the vaccine, which is made from a weakened version of the common cold virus from chimpanzees, is injected into participants it will prompt the body to produce antibodies and T-cells which will in turn destroy the virus.

Scientists, who will pursue a larger trial of about 5,000 volunteers in the coming months, will know if the vaccine has worked by looking at the number of candidates who become infected with the virus from the two groups.

The first human trial comes as Britain announced another 616 coronavirus victims today, taking the total number of fatalities in the UK to 18,738.

Information reaching ABN TV indicates that a traffic Policewoman stationed at a junction at Eneka Town in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State has been shot dead by another Police Officer.

The sad incident happened on Thursday to the shock and annoyance of residents.

The embattled Police Officer is said to be attached to the Rivers State Taskforce on-road decongestion.

The trigger-happy police officer reportedly blamed the sad occurrence on accidental discharge.

The victim is said to be an indigene of Ozuzu, Etche in Rivers State.

Confirming the incident, the Rivers State police command revealed that the female police officer identified as Sergent Lovender Elekwachi was shot on Thursday at Eneka, Obio Akpor Local Government Area.

Police Spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, stated that Elekwachi who hails from Ozuzu, Etche LGA of the state was shot on traffic duty by fellow Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah attached to the Operations Department of the Command

“Sergeant Osaiah, said to be attached to the Rivers Task Force on Decongestion, has been arrested, disarmed, and undergoing Orderly Room Trial.

“Two other members of the Task Force have also been arrested and being questioned. The Hilux vehicle belonging to the Task Force has been impounded, the corpse of the Woman Sergeant deposited in the mortuary.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G. Mukan, has ordered an investigation into the matter with a view to unravelling the circumstances that led to her death.

“The CP appeals for calm, pending the outcome of the investigation, promising that justice must be served in the circumstance.”

W/Sgt Lovender Elekwachi until her untimely death was serving at Eneka Division and was posted to the Eneka Roundabout on traffic duties.

ECOWAS Appoints President Buhari ‘Champion of Coronavirus Response’

President Muhammadu Buhari has been appointed the ‘Champion of the COVID-19 response’ by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The appointment took place Thursday at the Extraordinary ECOWAS Summit on COVID-19 which was held via teleconferencing under the Chairmanship of His Excellency, Mahamadou Issoufou, President of the Republic of Niger.

During the teleconference, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, President Buhari called on fellow ECOWAS leaders to look beyond the challenges posed by the COVID -19 pandemic and tap into various opportunities that it presents for the betterment of lives in Member States:

“In every challenging situation such as the current one, there are also opportunities. Our region must therefore seek to find those opportunities provided by this gloomy global outlook for its benefit by embarking on the implementation of such critical policies, which before now, will be difficult to accept”, he said.

While calling on his colleagues to intensify collaboration in order to save the region from “this deadly pandemic through sharing our experiences and best practices,” President Buhari outlined some measures taken by his government in response to the pandemic. These include:

a. The reduction of interest rates on all applicable Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) interventions from 9 to 5 percent and introduction of a one- year moratorium on CBN intervention facilities;

b. The inauguration of Presidential Task Force to coordinate national efforts to combat the spread of the virus and ensure efficiency and effectiveness in line with the Nigerian Action Plan on Health Security;

c. The provision of relief materials including medical and food supplies as well as conditional cash transfers of N20, 000 each for poor and vulnerable households and ;

d. The establishment of more isolation centers and testing facilities to contain the spread of the virus.

The Nigerian leader also said that unprecedented economic uncertainties, including severe fiscal and foreign exchange constraints, amid a slowdown in global economic growth that most nations are grappling with, have made it imperative for “our sub-region to refocus on accelerating the implementation of our popular vision of ‘ECOWAS of the people’ by adopting dynamic regional policies aimed at providing relief to our citizens.”

“Despite declining revenues, government continues to spend massively on the containment of the virus, medical care for those infected and minimizing impact of the crisis on the poor and vulnerable. This situation puts severe pressure on our finances by increasing our expenditures amid dwindling revenues. This invariably has led to a restructuring and reduction of our budget,” he added.

President Buhari used the occasion to rally other leaders to embrace agriculture, technology and innovation in order to emerge stronger.

“It is imperative that while addressing short term challenges, we should also explore opportunities to promote strong and dynamic agricultural policies that will guarantee food security for our people, creating jobs and reducing poverty in the region. We must innovate and use technology to boost the digital economy and do things differently, but better,” he said.

The Nigerian President affirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with other member states as they battle the virus:

“At a time of global uncertainty such as this, caused by the devastating impact of the COVID-19, let me convey Nigeria’s solidarity with all the Member States as we collectively battle to defeat the pandemic. I am greatly saddened by loss of numerous lives and extend my heartfelt condolences to families of those who have lost loved ones throughout the region. I also wish infected victims speedy and full recovery.”

He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the well-being and safety of the people in the sub-region and restated support for any initiatives that would curb the spread of the pandemic arising from the Summit.
