COVID-19: Austria To Re-Open Schools In May

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue has called for 30 days of the Benue people to seek God’s favour through prayers and fast against herders attack in Benue State.

Ortom made this call on Thursday in Makurdi while interacting with newsmen on the occasion of his 59th birthday.

The governor, who regretted the renewed onslaught on his people by the herdsmen, said he had resorted to prayers and fast against herders attack.

He appreciated God for granting him 59 years of age and described the journey so far as “tough”.

He said some of his school mates were not as lucky and assured that he would continue to work hard to deliver good governance to the people for their acts of uncommon love to him.

“You voted for me in 2015 and again you returned me in 2019. I owe you a great deal, I will continue to work hard to provide good governance”.

He called for patience during the COVID-19 lockdown, saying, the stay-at-home order was for the overall good of the people.

Ortom said Benue was a signatory to the 14 days proposed lockdown of the economy and described it as the right thing to do in order to contain the spread of the pandemic.

The highpoint of the interaction was the presentation of the governor’s life portrait to him by members of the Correspondent Chapel, led by their Acting Chairman, Mr Attah Ede of the Punch Newspapers.

Ede had extolled the virtues of the governor in exemplary leadership, stressing that the chapel was proud of his achievements.

Veteran Nollywood Actor, Yomi Obileye Is Dead

Veteran Nollywood actor, Yomi Obileye is dead. The actor died on Friday morning from an undisclosed ailment.

Obileye was known for Tade Ogidan’s movie, Hostages in 1997.

Nigerian actor and comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka who shared a post announcing his death wrote on his page;

“If tears could build a stairway and memories were a lane, we would walk right up to heaven and bring you back again. “

Madagascar Launches Africa’s First Cure For COVID-19

Madagascan President, Andry Rajoelina has officially launched a medicine he believes can prevent and cure patients suffering from COVID-19.

Developed by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research and branded COVID Organics, President Rajaolina presented the so-called remedy to the press on Monday. It contains Artemisia, a plant cultivated on the Big Island to fight against malaria.

“All trials and tests have been conducted and its effectiveness in reducing the elimination of symptoms has been proven for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in Madagascar,” the president said.

A presidential decree said COVID-organics is mandatory for children returning to school on Wednesday. President Rajaolina said Monday that it had cured two COVID-19 cases.

“The COVID-Organics will be distributed free of charge to our most vulnerable compatriots and sold at very low prices to others. All profits will be donated to IMRA to finance scientific research,” the president wrote on Twitter.

“I’m convinced that, in fact, history will prove us, but today there are already two cases that have been cured with the COVID-organics, but we’ll actually see what happens next.”

“COVID Organics will be used in profilaxis, i.e. preventive, but clinical observations have shown a trend towards its effectiveness in curative, other clinical studies are currently underway,” he stressed at the launch.

The president has previously made claims about herbal remedies despite the scientific opinion that there is currently no cure for COVID-19 and that any experimental formula should be rigorously tested to see if it is safe and effective.

As of April 22, Madagascar’s case stats stood at 121 cases of which 44 had recovered with no deaths.

Mike Tyson has revealed he has been training with view to making a return to the ring in some boxing exhibitions.

The former undisputed world heavyweight champion has not fought professionally since retiring after the sixth round of his bout with Kevin McBride in 2005.

Tyson’s troubles with drug addiction have been well documented since, but the 53-year-old is now eyeing a comeback in aid of charity.

And speaking to rapper T.I. on Instagram Live, Tyson said he had already been doing some pad work alongside some intense sessions in the gym.

“I’ve been hitting the mitt for the last two weeks,” he said. “That’s been tough. My body is really jacked up, really sore from hitting the mitt.

“But I’ve been working out, Ive been trying to get some boxing exhibitions. I’m gonna get in shape so I can box some three or four round exhibitions for some charities.

“I’d like to do some charity exhibitions get some money to help the homeless or some drug-affected m***** f******, you know, like me.”

Iron Mike is regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, and there is little doubt he would draw a crowd if he were to lace up the gloves again.

He continued: “I do about two hours on cardio, I do the bike and I do the treadmill for an hour, then I do some light weights, 250-300 reps.

“I’d like to do some charity exhibitions get some money to help the homeless or some drug-affected m***** f******, you know, like me.”

President Buhari Sends Ramadan Message To Muslims Amid COVID-19

President Muhammadu Buhari sends his best wishes in a Ramadan message to Muslims in the country and all over the world as they begin this year’s 30-day fast, following the sighting of the moon.

“I congratulate all Muslims as they commence this year’s Ramadan fast which is depicted by self-denial, universal brotherhood, austerity and helping relatives and needy people,” says the President.

President Buhari describes Ramadan 2020 as a challenge, falling as it is in the period of the global pandemic, which has spread to more than 200 nations, with virtually all countries advising citizens to avoid large gatherings and have their prayers and meals (suhoor and iftar) individually or with family at home.

“In this Ramadan period, the kind of socializing you are used to now risks spreading the Coronavirus,” the President cautions Muslims while enjoining them to refrain from those Ramadan rituals and traditions such as group meals and congregational prayers that have been put on hold by Muslim religious authorities all over the world.

President Buhari in his Ramadan message to Muslims urges them to endure and not to use the Coronavirus as an excuse not to participate in the Ramadan fast unless such abstention is warranted by the excuses clearly outlined by health and religious authorities.

He wishes Muslims in the country and the world overall the blessings of the holy month.

Mamman Daura Pays Tribute To Abba Kyari

Alhaji Mamman Daura, a nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari has paid tribute to Mallam Abba Kyari, the late Chief of Staff to the President.

Recall that Abba Kyari, whose death was announced last Friday, had died of complications from the deadly coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In a tribute to Kyari which was made available to NAN on Friday, Mamman Daura, said Abba Kyari was a man of uncommon attributes who was blessed with mountainous gifts.

He described the former Chief of Staff as a man with uncommon attributes of intelligence, diligence, hard work, loyalty to friends, and worthy causes.

Daura wrote:

“I remember when I employed him as a Reporter in the New Nigerian, I was surprised when he accepted the only job available which was a Proof Reader.

“He was a man who constantly strives to improve himself and he was fortified for success as Chief of Staff by the rigours of a Cambridge education and varied experiences in Banking, industry, investment and journalism.

“He set himself the task of defining the role, functions and status of the Chief of Staff.

“He started by consulting previous incumbents of the position he could reach as a way of educating himself of the challenges ahead of him.

“I firmly believe that all future Chiefs of Staff would be judged by the benchmark of Kyari.

“Kyari was an exacting taskmaster and his staff were relieved if he travelled outside the country, but they valued, respected, and even liked him.

“He was at odds with many senior members of the government on economic policies because he tended to look inward for solutions and was not an ideologue.

“He was heavily influenced by two Nobel Laureates, the great West Indian Economist, Professor Arthur Lewis and the eminent Indian Professor Amartya Sen, the latter he frequently called to exchange views.

“Despite holding firm views, his advice to the President was dispassionate, even-handed and did not hide unpleasant facts, in the best traditions of public service.

“In point of intellect, he stood above all Ministers and Special Advisers in this government. But personally, he was modest, ever willing to learn, ever willing to help others.

“He was a man who lived a fairly simple life and would habitually wear his shoes to the ground before buying a new pair.”

COVID-19: Abia Govt Deploys Mobile Courts To Try Face Mask Violators

The Abia state government says it has noted with dismay that many citizens still leave their homes without wearing face masks, thereby exposing themselves to possible COVID-19 infection within this period of ongoing contact tracing of index cases.

To this end, the state governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu has deployed mobile courts to try such persons in accordance with the existing COVID-19 Prevention and Control Regulations of Infectious Diseases in Abia state.

The Governor in a statement made available to ABN TV signed by the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu also announced that the index cases in the state, both of whom are above 70 years in age and with underlying medical conditions remain stable and responding to medical management procedures at Federal Medical Center, Umuahia.

According to the release, sample of the suspected case who lives off Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, returned a negative result from NCDC testing center, as well as two other samples sent to NCDC from the State.

“We are expecting test results for 23 samples related to contact tracing for the index cases and will inform appropriately when available” he said.

He also added, “We have also observed the orchestrated attempts by unconscionable political actors from our state aimed at distracting the government from focusing on ensuring that we protect and save the lives of Abians and control spread of the coronavirus within our dear state at a time of such global health emergency as this and wish to assure the people that we will remain focused on the task of protecting and saving lives of Abians in this era of the pandemic, as always”.
