Hunger Virus Kills Faster Than Coronavirus – Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has said the ‘hunger virus’ kills faster than Coronavirus. ABN TV Reports.

The traditional ruler, however, warned that care must be taken to avoid losing one’s life in the process of searching for what to eat.

Oba Ogunwusi stated this on Wednesday while donating Motorised Fumigators to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.

Speaking at the event, which was held at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office in Okemosan, Abeokuta, the Ooni said: “We all know that hunger virus can kill faster; we all know that. But the way Yorubas will say, in the process of searching for what to eat, may we not meet what will eat us.

He said, “While we are struggling to get whatever food, in terms of palliatives, in terms of what government will share; in terms of what people will share, what happens in the process of distribution? We keep endangering ourselves.”

The monarch hinted that this informed the reason he came up with the technology of converting liquid to fog “that is environmentally friendly.”

This, he said, comes in the form of droplets that are anti-coronavirus, saying it fights all illness-causing germs.

According to him, the technology was in collaboration with the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, adding that everything that made up the fumigator was locally sourced.

Oba Ogunwusi stressed that Coronavirus is real, warning all those who do not believe to protect themselves

“Coronavirus is real, and for a lot of people that probably think it is not real, this is indeed real. On social media, people asked, why is the Ooni wearing a face mask. But I have to lead by example to tell the entire world that Coronavirus is real and we need to protect ourselves.”

He stressed that efforts should not be on hand washing or sanitizing alone, advising that the environment should also be sanitized.

“In terms of sanitizing, we are only focusing more on our hands; and the pandemic, which is a common enemy that comes in droplets. It can drop on our clothes, it can drop on our shoes or anywhere. We are not focusing more on the droplets that can spread (in the air). This is very important.

In his remarks, Governor Abiodun appreciated the Ooni for standing by the state at this critical time.

The Governor described Ooni as a 21st Century monarch, stressing that the entire Yoruba race is proud of him.

While wishing Oba Ogunwusi journey mercies back to Ile-Ife, Abiodun said the government of Ogun would love to patronize those who initiated the motorized fumigator to aid the efforts of the state in decontaminating markets, schools and other public places in Ogun.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Ogun State, I want to say thank you to our Kabiyesi. May God continue to grant you more wisdom. We wish you journey mercies back home,” Abiodun stated.

FG Delivers 110 Trailers Of Rice And Grains To Kano As Palliatives

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development have dispatched 110 trailers of palliatives foodstuff from the Federal Government to the Kano State Government for distribution to the needy, vulnerable and people of concern in the state. ABN TV Reports

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, said that the Ministry delivered ten trailer-loads of parboiled rice to the state government about two weeks ago, and in addition to that directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deliver 100 trucks of grains to five locations in Kano State for distribution to poor and vulnerable households on the instruction of President Muhammadu Buhari, which makes it a total of 110 trailers of foodstuff from the Federal Government.

The grains in 100 trailers now on their way to Kano, comprise millet, sorghum and maize, which were released from silos holding the country’s strategic food reserve located across the country.

It could be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to release 70,000 metric tons of food for distribution to less-privileged Nigerians to cushion the effect of the lockdown aimed at checking the spread of the killer-disease triggered by COVID-19 in Nigeria.

The Minister emphasised that “One of the humanitarian interventions provided by the Federal Government is the delivery of food items as palliatives to the poor and vulnerable in all states affected by the Covid-19 pandemic to ease the lockdown situation”.

Sadiya Farouq assured the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Engineer Mustapha Maihaja that: “The Ministry will continue to work closely with all the agencies under its purview, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in discharging its mandates, including providing effective coordination of humanitarian interventions both nationally and internationally for the benefit of the citizens of this country, especially during this Covid-19 Pandemic.”

She highlighted the need for the Agency to work closely with the Ministry and its sister agencies in all the states in monitoring the effective distribution of the palliatives to ensure that the food items reach the intended beneficiaries, especially in states under lockdown.

In his remark, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Engr. Mustapha Maihaja assured the Minster that the Agency will work closely with State Governments to ensure the effective monitoring and accountability in distributing the palliatives, and thanked the Minister for the visit and her support to NEMA in discharging its duties for the benefit of Nigerians.

Nurse, Mother Test Positive For COVID-19 In Lagos

A nurse and her mother have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) in Imokun, Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

According to a source, the nurse who works at a private hospital and her mother tested positive on Sunday after exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

The source said both mother and daughter were not residents in the town, noting that they came to inspect an apartment she intended to hire for her mother in Imokun, Epe town.

Before the reported cases, Epe Local Government was one of the three Local government areas in the state that have not recorded any coronavirus case.

With the newly reported cases, a team from the Lagos State Task Force on COVID-19 visited the palace of the Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, on Sunday in Papa, Epe to confirm the report after which workers at the palace took them to Imokun.

“The team went to the building in Imokun for contact tracing and they subjected all residents in the building to COVID-19 test.

“They all tested negative but the nurse and her mother were positive. So they took both of them from Imokun to Lagos for further treatment. They have been at the Lagos isolation centre since Sunday,” the source said.

Confirming the cases on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Secretary to Epe Local Government Area, Tunde Subair, said: “COVID-19 is real and community/person-person transmission is ongoing.

“Let’s keep to the rules and directives given out by the government- social distancing, staying home, cough/respiratory etiquette, use of face masks when outside the household. Epe Local Government now has two confirmed cases of COVID-19.”

Police operatives from Idimu Division in Lagos have arrested one Rasaq Babalola while his wife identified as Mama Raheem fled after they allegedly conspired and paid assassins to eliminate his neighbour, Emeka Anozie, over Covid-19 palliative during the current lockdown. ABN TV Reports

The incident happened at Agbo Komolafe Street, Unity Estate, Idimu area of Egbeda, Lagos, where they reside.

The suspect, Rasaq, has been arrested and detained at the Police Station while efforts were being made to arrest his wife, who he said fled after the plot was foiled and the assassins had escaped.

Trouble was said to have started after the victim, Emeka Anozie, engaged the services of a chef to cook food in order to share to people in their neighbourhood as palliative during the current lockdown.

The couple was said not to be happy over the benevolence to the people and attempted to stop Anozie but he ignored them. He went on, cooked the food and shared to the people around.

According to Anozie, later after the incident, Rasaq’s children were disturbing in the compound throwing stones at his window and he went to their mother to ask her to control their children since they were living upstairs in order not to destroy things in his apartment.

The woman flared up and threatened to deal with him over COVID-19 palliative

Anozie said the next day, some armed men, about 14 of them, invaded his apartment, beat him to stupor, collected his phones, then brought him out to take him away with their waiting Toyota car before people in their neighbourhood frustrated them and they escaped.

Mr Anozie then rushed to the Police in the pool of blood and he was referred to the hospital, where he was being treated when he received information that armed men in Military uniforms invaded his apartment looking for him in order to eliminate him.

However, when they did not see him, they attacked two of his younger brothers, destroyed his two televisions, other properties inside, looted his safe containing huge sums of money and escaped.

He said that the operation was led by both Rasaq and his wife now at large.

When Rasaq was contacted, he admitted that he hired assassins including the armed soldiers to attack Mr Anozie and blamed everything on his wife and in-laws, who he said arranged the whole thing.

It was gathered that it was not the first time such had been done on the tenants, who had lived in the house in the past before the current incident happened.

Ebonyi State has confirmed a second case of coronavirus.

The 27- year-old patient was intercepted at Ishieke in Ebonyi Local government Area with his seven- month- old pregnant wife and a maid when coming into Ebonyi from Delta State in a bus.

Commissioner for Health stated this in Abakaliki the State Capital.

He said that as the family couldn’t access any means of transportation at Ishieke because of the subsisting curfew in the State, men of the anti-COVID 19 swooped on them and took them to the isolation centre at Pa Ngele Stadium, Abakaliki.

Umezurike stated the patient has been admitted at the state isolation centre for treatment.

He said: “It is quite unfortunate that we have recorded a second case of COVID-19.

“The patient was returning from Delta with his wife and maid. When they dropped in town in Abakaliki. They couldn’t get a means to a village in Izzi.

“The police encountered them and took them to stadium. On Sunday they slept and on Monday after sorting out was done for those to go for testing, they went for COVID-19 test.

“The man tested positive while that of the wife is still inconclusive while that of the maid is negative. That of the wife is being repeated.

“The man is in good condition. He just had intermittent headaches which has subsided. Presently, they are in isolation ward.”

The state recorded its first case last Sunday night.

Governor David Umahi said the 31 -year- old index case hails from Onicha local government area of the State.

NCDC Urged To Step Up Testing, Establish More COVID-19 Testing Centres

A rights and advocacy group, International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, Inter-society, has called on the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to step up testing capacity, as that will unravel hidden cases of COVID-19 in the country.

The group in a letter it wrote to the Director-General of the centre, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, called on the centre to step up testing capacity and establish more COVID-19 testing centres in the country, asking that three centres be particularly established in Anambra State.

The group said the establishment of three testing centres in Anambra was imperative, with one in each of the three senatorial zones because of her population, and the recent relaxation of the lockdown order by the state governor.

The group which praised NCDC for the job it is doing said the centre should be commended, even though her efforts have not reached the acceptable standard.

“In the area of testing capacity, the country still disappointingly and acutely lags behind. With UN estimated population of 200 million, to have only 11,000 of its citizens tested is not a good record.

“In Africa, where Nigeria is said to be the giant of the continent, the country is widely surpassed by many in the areas of testing capacity and procurement of testing equipment and trained personnel.

“As at three days ago or on 25th April 2020, available statistics showed that South Africa with 57.8m citizens has tested over 161,000 persons, with 4,793 tested positive and 90 deaths (as at 27th April).

“Egypt with 98.4m citizens has tested over 90,000 with 4,319 tested positive and 307 deaths.

“Ghana with 29.7m citizens has tested over 88, 188, with 1,550 tested positive and 11 deaths.

“Abysmally, Nigeria with 200 million citizens has only tested about 11,000 with 1,337 tested positive and 40 deaths. These are just to cite but a few.”

The group said more testing centres will help Nigeria beat the virus fast.

The Executive Director of popular online medium Igbere TV, James Anyalekwa, has commended Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Umahi, for retracing his steps and apologizing to journalists in the state.

ABN TV reports that Anyalekwa had on Wednesday demanded an apology from Umahi over a life ban placed on two journalists in Ebonyi, threatening to drag him to court and before the International Community.

However, the Governor in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday pleaded with the [Sun and Vanguard] journalists to “put behind” them the dispute, while also lifting the ban.

Reacting, Anyalekwa, who doubles as National President of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN), said the move was a welcome development.

He said state actors, at all levels of government, must learn to stop the clampdown on media houses and journalists going about their lawful business, as required by law.

“I thank the Governor (David Umahi) for realizing that he has made a terrible mistake, and most especially, for retracing his steps and choosing the path of peace, which is a great mark of a true leader.”

“Like I said last week, it is the right and duty of every journalist as the watchdog of society to report happenings in the society whether ‘good or bad.’

“The media “shall at all times be free” to perform its duties without hindrance as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (As Amended). The government must respect this”, he said.

The Igbere TV boss called for partnership between the Umahi-led Ebonyi state government and media houses, especially in the fight against COVID-19.

“Journalists are critical stakeholders and partners in national development and no attempt should be made to derail our efforts towards building a greater Nigeria.

“I urge Governor Umahi to show a greater level of transparency and accountability, by allowing unfettered coverage of government activities by journalists and media houses, at all time.”

The OMPAN National President urged journalists not to relent but remain focused in discharging their duties at all time, as critical stakeholders in a democracy.

Mass retirement of senior staff of The Niger Delta Development CommissionNiger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) may take place today, The Nation has been reliably informed.

It was gathered the action may affect the senior staff of the commission with two years or less to retire.

Some of those that may be consumed by the purge are Directors, Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors.

Also to be affected are staff with cases at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).

Cross River State Govt Accuses Federal Government Of Not Providing Test Kits

The Cross River State Government has accused the Federal Government of not providing her with enough sample collection test kits for COVID-19. ABN TV Reports

The state ministry of health alleged it could not provide the needed number of COVID-19 tests because of the lack of testing kit samples.

Addressing a press conference in Calabar on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, who is also the Chairman of the COVID-19 response team lamented the attitude of the Federal Government towards the State, accusing the Federal Government of not providing test kits for the state.

She said “Upon all that we have done in the State to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, we do not have one recommendation from the Federal Government or NCDC Boss to say that the State started on time, you have done well, the country should emulate what we are doing and replicate same across the country, that has not happened.

“With 50 sample collection kits, for a population of 4.5m, how many tests do you want Dr Betta Edu and Cross River State Government to produce in the week?

“These things are not available and yet you want us to embark on sample collection and send them to Irua or Ebonyi.

“For us as a State and with the limited number of test kits we have, we decided that only people who meet the criteria sent to the State from NCDC will be tested. The pressure is becoming too much and unnecessary.

“We were asked not to use locally available swap sample collection kits which we have but rather we should use the one sent to us

“We were told we were not testing enough and that is why we have not found a case.

“Due to pressure, we tested somebody who has not met the criteria last September, no fever, no cough, nothing else, no difficulty in breathing and she has a family history of Asthmatic”.

Dr Edu said that the State has cried out to the Federal Government for support, accusing the Federal Government of not providing test kits for the state “We received only 50 sample collection kits, 200 PPE and four body bags and four boots from the federal government” she regretted.

“We have struggled on our own to ensure that the State is COVID-19 free.

“FG should isolate states that have done well during this period, support them in the way that they required, everybody does not need a ventilator, I don’t have a case now and I do not need it

“What I need is an emergency is to keep my border shut so that the over 50, 000 Cameroonians that are trying to get into the state can be stopped. What I need is money to pay the surveillance officers who will go round and look for cases around.

“And what I need are sample kits for us to get samples in their numbers as they have asked for, we need support from the Federal Government to produce more face masks, we should be treated differently, no state is one.

“Yet we heard all states in Nigeria must have COIVD-19 and it is almost becoming a battle to ensure that whether true or not, all States in Nigeria have COIVD-19.

“It is possible to have a state without COVID-19 and others around it have, so it is not compulsory that every state in Nigeria should have COVID-19”

The Commissioner noted that the State is one of the two states that is COVID-19 free, “We should be commended rather than accused.

“We set up an emergency operating centre and we brought together specialists in the medical field, scientists, military, para-military and indeed the who is who as it would concern preserving and protecting our dear people from COVID-19.

“We discussed how to improve sensitization, how to engage community leaders, chiefs, traditional rulers, religious leaders.

“We went all out for sensitization at a time when no other state in Nigeria was carrying out sensitization for coronavirus. 

“Our instinct was Lassa Fever which was killing people but we were carrying out sensitization both for coronavirus and Lassa fever then there was no case of COVID-19 in Africa and Nigeria.

“Cross River State remains the first state in Nigeria to screen people who came in through our local airport, at this time Nigeria had not recorded any single case of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

“We screened people from China, South Africa and we tried to follow up on them for two weeks to see that they were not infected.

“Cross River State was the first state to say that its International and interstate borders be shut and for people to come in they must be screened.

“We also make it compulsory for no mask, no movement. These were policies we put on the table and followed them through.

“The virus does not move but the humans that are infected move, spreading it from one location to the other” she stated.
