The incident occurred at Agbara in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested on April 24, 2020, after the victim regained consciousness in the pit and was rushed to a hospital.

The PPRO explained that the suspect was arrested following a report received by policemen attached to the Agbara Area Command that a young lady was lying unconscious in a 10-feet deep pit in the bush.

Oyeyemi said, “Upon the report by good Samaritans, the Area Commander detailed his men to the scene, where the young lady was rescued with the help of members of the public and she was quickly taken to hospital.

“Having regained consciousness, the victim explained to the police that on April 22, 2020, while coming from night duty, which she performed in the company where she works, the suspect, who had been making advances to her, accosted her, capitalized on the isolated nature of the area and dragged her into the bush, where he raped her.”

“After some time, she came back to life and started shouting for help.

“On the strength of her explanation, the Area Commander, ACP Bolanle Muritala, gave an order to his detectives that the suspect must be traced and apprehended.

“The detectives swung into action immediately, traced the suspect, and got him arrested.

“On interrogation, the suspect made a confessional statement and owned up to the crime and blamed it on the devil.”

The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Kenneth Ebrimson, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

Every year, 3 May is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

” This year, the NUJ joins the rest of the World in observing the day with the theme, “Journalism without Fear or Favour”, to focus on taking action to secure independent journalism which is one of the fundamental principles of the Windhoek Declaration.

“We Salute Nigerian Journalists for their courage and professionalism and call on them to sustain and improve on their professional calling.

“It is worth reiterating that no democracy can grow and flourish without a vibrant independent media that will be a catalyst for good governance and rule of law. It is in this regard that today, we celebrate Nigerian Journalists for promoting independent journalism practice despite myriad challenges.

“We continue to note with disdain the issue of safety and security of Journalists in the country which have not significantly improved but rather continued to impact negatively on good journalism. It is regrettable that politicians and political office holders and agents of the state are increasingly initiating actions against Journalists which include physical assault and detention all with the sole aim of inducing fear, thus restricting quality independent practice.

“We enjoin journalists on this auspicious occasion of the 2020 World Press Freedom Day, to work assiduously towards promoting ethical journalism without fear and without any favour” he said.

Doctors in Ogun State under the auspices of Association of Resident Doctors, Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) have declared a three-day warning strike.

ABN TV reports that the strike begins on Sunday after a 21- day ultimatum and another seven-day ultimatum notifying State Government on the needs for appropriate remuneration for doctors in OOUTH as they battle the COVID-19 pandemic.

The President of the association, Dr. Mutiu Popoola, announced this in a statement titled: Protect and appreciate doctors who put up their lives online during this pandemic COVID-19 in Shagamu, Ogun State.

Popoola said that there has been no commitment whatsoever from the government on the issue of appropriate remuneration, entry-level, new minimum wage, hazard allowance, and life insurance for our members.

He said that “despite the inadequate response of Ogun State Government to the health risks confronted by our members during this COVID-19 pandemic, our members went ahead to continue their work diligently in their various departments and at the isolation centre.

“We were taken aback by the arbitrary change in only hazard allowance to be given as COVID -19 Special Hazard Allowance to all health workers.

“The 200% increase in Hazard allowance is just an increase from N5000 to N15,000 for just the month of April,” he said.
