Oyedepo Questions Closure Of Churches Over COVID-19 [VIDEO]

2

The Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide alias Winners’ Chapel International, David Oyedepo, has questioned the continuous closure of churches over the COVID-19 pandemic, saying he suspects ulterior motives.

Oyedepo, who spoke during the Covenant Hour of Prayer Programme on Wednesday, said if markets could be opened for six hours, there was no reason for the closure of churches even for two hours.

The revered cleric said he believed there was a gang up against the growth of the church in the country.

He said, “There is something wrong; for people to be allowed to be in the market for six hours and can’t be in church for two hours, it is an upside-down way of looking at things.

“Which one is more orderly? The market or the church?

“I can smell a rat. The Lord spoke to me on it so strong yesterday. I can smell a rat. Behind all this, how do we stop the church from exploding? The people involved don’t know it.

“The voice of darkness is influencing people at various levels, targeting the church because the growth and expansion of the church is the greatest headache of the devil. But the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The devil and all his agents shall surely pay for this.

“I don’t know what hospital that records the kind of healings that the church of God records. And now hospitals, where people die every day, are open, but the church is closed because the oppression of the devil has no medical cure.”

Earlier, the President of the LoveWorld Incorporated, aka Christ Embassy, Chris Oyakhilome, had slammed church leaders who agreed to the lockdown of churches without praying and consulting with other pastors.

  • Despite Being APC Lawmaker, Hon. Kalu Commends Ikpeazu Over Fight Against COVID-19

The Member representing Bende Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has commended the efforts of Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic in the State. ABN TV reports.

Hon. Kalu was speaking in a radio interview monitored in Umuahia recently. He said “I am supporting my Governor, the Governor of Abia State. He is at another party and I’m in another party and you also have to support the government of the day because in the peace of the land you shall have your own peace “

The federal lawmaker said he was happy that the Governor and leader of the State expressed faith that God would answer his prayer and that of the people by crowning efforts of the Governor with success and protect the State from the pandemic.

“I’m so happy that God is listening to the prayer of the Governor of Abia State. I was interviewed once and they said my Governor said he is believing Abia is God’s Own State and COVID-19 would not have its impact here but people thought it was a joke.

“I told myself if the leader of the State believes so much that God will come and rescue Abia and protect Abia, that’s how it is going to be”, he enthused.

Kalu went further to call on the people of the state to continue to play their part by abiding by the preventive measures and directives of government in order to remain safe from the pandemic.

On the proposed controversial Infectious Disease Bill at the National Assembly, the lawmaker said there is no hidden agenda about the bill and informed that “In the wisdom of the leadership of the House, they have sent this bill…to relevant Committees. Which means, Nigerians should expect to be invited for a public hearing.

“So people should stop panicking. We will remove everything they would want us to remove and we will add the ones they will want us to add to make sure it’s a healthy bill that would be made an Act to serve Nigerians.

“I’m sure God will come to our rescue because we put our whole faith in Him and not necessarily rely on just science. He will make Abia a place of refuge for so many people who are looking up to him”, he concluded emphatically.

Recall that Abia has two index cases out of which one has been successfully nursed back to good health and discharged while the other is in stable condition.

COVID-19: Abia Civil Society Coalition Laud Ikpeazu For Inclusion In Stakeholders Forum

1

Civil societies in Abia State under the aegis of Abia Civil Society Coalition Against COVID-19 (ASCSA COVID-19) has commended the state governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu for incorporating the body into the stakeholders’ forum of the State on COVID-19, saying it will create room for broad-based participation, more accountability and openness in the enforcement of Covid-19 containment. ABN TV reports.

The group while commending the state government’s decision to ease lockdown in order to ease the economic difficulties the people pass through also warned that utmost carefulness should be exercised in implementing its guidelines, adding that the disease is still much active in the state and country.

“Equally appreciable is the government’s decision to ease the statewide lockdown through a phased and studied approach since, on both sides and ends, government and the citizenry are bearing some economic brunt. This equally requires utmost carefulness in implementation as it is not yet Uhuru with the novel pandemic since public health and safety remains paramount.

“As for the easing of the lockdown measures, with specific regards to the markets, the Coalition sees the need for the government to work with market committees whose primary duty shall be to ensure total compliance with the containment guidelines when the markets finally open.

“Based on the Coalition’s monitoring and evaluation of 4th May 2020 ease of the lockdown, many citizens do not have face mask yet, even when it is sold for 100 naira. Also are there many who have shown reluctance in wearing the same.

“This is not the level of ignorance and noncompliance to be expected in marketplaces which have high-risk potential. The Coalition urges that greater energy be deployed to education and sensitization.

“Before opening, whenever safety tells, markets should be disinfected and fumigated and when and if finally opened, marketers and grocers must have running water and sanitizer as stipulated already by the state government,” it says in a release on Wednesday signed by seven civil societies.

The civil societies also expressed dissatisfaction over what it called lapses in sharing palliatives made available by the state government to the people, urging the State’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to look into the issues.

“The Coalition observes that though the state government made provision for palliatives and distribution of same during the statewide lockdown, there were noticeable lapses with sharing and distribution of relief to the vulnerable as the materials could not, in some cases, trickle down to the (very) poor who are in dire need of such. This, the Coalition urges the state’s inter-ministerial committee to look into given that bulk and bunch of the state’s population falls within the daily wage group.

“There were security operational guidelines as to the enforcement of the stay-at-home order, part of the containment of the virus; to this end, due regard and reference must be made to the letter of March 22 released by the Police Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mbah, urging men and officers of the Nigeria Police to ensure compliance with Human Rights and rules of engagement in the furtherance of the campaign to end Covid-19 for good.

“The Coalition understands that Human Rights have in most cases been utterly violated by the security agencies; same rights enforcers and custodians. Intimidation of motorists and operators of tricycle (known as “Keke NAPEP” in the common parlance) by certain police officers on duty as well as other security agencies who insist that such drivers and operators part with some tips before gaining clearance has been observed; this is even when such drivers and operators are conveying essential goods which under the Covid-19 guidelines is not unlawful. This way, many vehicles have been impounded and ransom met.

“Against what the general rules are, arrests without charging of offenders to mobile courts have been perpetrated by security agencies equally. While there are mobile courts to see to the justice and conformity with the guidelines, the police have forcefully detained certain persons more than two days, in known cases, during the lockdown.

“These amount to a breach of fundamental rights and out and out disregard for rules of engagement earlier stated. The Coalition condemns this in toto.

“Similarly, the attitudes of members of the state task force in the line of duty is lamentable. Many among these persons compromise the standard for bribes and tips. A video of task force men beating and assaulting a woman had gone viral on the internet.

“This, if not checked can put paid to the good motives of state government in a time like this. The Coalition is not unaware of the incident at Ogbor Hill, Aba, which claimed the life of a tricycle operator said to be pursued by the task force team.

“While the federal and state governments are ensuring restriction of movement of citizens and chattels, tightening up the border and boundary operations to further mitigate the spread and community infection of the dreaded virus, the task force members together with some security agencies, who, unfortunately, neither understand nor see themselves as frontline workers, have allowed passage to many travellers into and outside the state, all for a bribe.

“This way, in some cases, have the compliant ones (among the security agencies) been able to intercept vehicles coming to Abia all the way from the North. It is not so much to say the guidelines forbade Abians outside the state entry but that the lives of Abians within must be protected as is the constitutional responsibility of the state government.

“This act of allowing people into the state in a time like this is counterproductive to the campaign against Covid-19 as it endangers public health. Cases of interceptions of non-indigenes entering Abia abound to the knowledge of the Coalition too.

“The Coalition, this way and wise, calls on the state government and the inter-ministerial committee to look into these problems as what is happening in places like Lagos, Abuja and Kano should be deterrent to us all. For public safety and good, border porosity must be addressed and forthwith.

“It is ideal, the Coalition understands, to use a time like this to work on having testing centres and as well rapidly increasing testing within the state. The rapid response team should ensure publicity of the number of those tested and results of the same to help enlighten the public about what measures the government is taking.

“The Coalition, once again, reaffirms its resolve to work for the good of Abians in containing this deadly virus and thanks to the state government for this timely co-option.

“Lastly, the Coalition urges Abians to exhibit attitudes that conform with the stated guidelines as together we can win the war against COVID-19” it concluded.

Lock Nigeria Down For 2 Months – Sagay Tells Buhari

1

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) has told President, Muhammadu Buhari to lock Nigeria down for a minimum of 2 months in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. ABN TV reports.

Sagay lamented the non-compliance of Nigerians to safety measures as the federal government eased the lockdown.

According to him, he saw many Nigerians without face masks and not practising social distancing despite the increasing rate of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country.

Sagay, describing Nigerians as the most indisciplined in the world, urged Buhari to instruct military men to patrol the streets and arrest anyone found except essential workers.

Speaking with Independent, he said “Nigerians are the most undisciplined people on earth. I went out after six weeks today and in spite of all that has been said, I saw them in their thousands without wearing masks.

“Out of the 50 carrying masks, 25 per cent had it on their necks instead of their faces. Only about 25 per cent were wearing the masks properly.

“Buses were filled, people were in crowds and they were just behaving as if everything is normal as if there is no COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

“Nigeria needs a very strong hand, that needs authoritarian leadership for so many things to succeed. If I were the President, I will lock Nigeria down for 2 months and put armed men on the streets to arrest and detain anybody who is found outside except essential workers.”

He added that if he were the president, he would use power and authority on Nigerians at this time without restraint.

“Unless we have a government that decides to use power and authority without any constraint, we won’t achieve any result because Nigerians are indisciplined.

“With the way Nigerians are behaving, we may have to be quarantined for like two months by force. Aside from the lockdown, we should have security men patrolling the streets and inflicting the worst type of punishment on anybody who violates the directive,” Sagay added.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, on Tuesday confirmed fresh 148 COVID-19 cases in the country.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in Nigeria to 2,950, with 98 deaths recorded.

Relocation Of Almajiri: Wike Accuses FG Of Hypocrisy

  • Relocation Of Almajiri: Wike Accuses FG Of Hypocrisy

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has accused the President, Muhammadu Buhari government of playing politics with the relocation of Almajiri to their various states in the North.

Many State governments are taking the measure to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Daily Post reports that Governor Wike spoke at the Government House in Port Harcourt when he received traditional rulers on Tuesday.

He insisted that the shutdown of Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor local government areas was necessary to curtail the spread of the virus.

“When they started relocating the almajiri in the North, the Federal Government said nothing. Immediately they heard that we have relocated some almajiri, they came up with the declaration that it is against the inter-state movement. Why this double standard?” he said.

He called on the monarchs to set up a task force in their different communities to ensure that markets, hotels and beer parlours across the state remained closed.

Wike also urged Local Government Area Chairmen to help the monarchs to implement the directive.

Wike threatened to punish anyone who violates the State’s directive on the use of face masks and the closure of markets.

He added, “As the hotels remain closed, those coming in will have nowhere to stay. When we are safe, we can enjoy what we can. I am not doing this because I hate anyone, but it is for the protection of our people.

“No human being will see death and embrace it. We cannot kill ourselves. The only solution is to ensure social distancing and proper hygiene.”

Some States Don’t Need COVID-19 Test Laboratory — NCDC

1

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC has said not every state requires a molecular laboratory to test for COVID-19.

The media aide to the NCDC Director-General, Emeka Oguanuo, said this in an interview with The PUNCH while addressing the non-existence of COVID-19 labs in border states including Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Yobe, Jigawa and Adamawa.

According to Oguanuo, labs of that nature are not built overnight.

He explained that so long as the states had effective sample collection infrastructure, they could affect the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients in their states.

The NCDC spokesman said, “Inasmuch as we are trying to increase our testing capacity, the idea is not that, at the moment, every state must have a testing lab for coronavirus in the interim.

“Rather, it’s a longer-term strategy for every state to have a diagnostic capacity for these infectious diseases. These are not things you build overnight.

“It was because some states already had a laboratory diagnostic infrastructure that the labs you see were easily repurposed for coronavirus testing. If those labs were not in existence, we would be talking about starting from scratch.”

Oguanuo stated that the long-term plan was to have the requisite infrastructure in each state, “which is why we urge states to ensure they have a lab for this.”

He added, “If, for instance, Gombe, Zamfara and Katsina, have labs that can do polymerase chain reaction testing already, and they, to a large extent, have standard operating procedures that guide their work, it would make it easier for the NCDC to just provide them with reagents and guidelines, and train their staff.

“Even if the state does tests, we have a very effective transportation mechanism for sending samples to the nearest labs and that is what all the states that do not have labs are doing.

“About two months ago, when we recorded our first case, we just had one lab that could diagnose. Now, we have 18. So, it’s remarkable progress.”

Morocco Launches Fleet Of Drones To Tackle COVID-19

1

Morocco has rapidly expanded its fleet of drones as it battles the COVID-19 pandemic, deploying them for aerial surveillance, public service announcements and sanitisation.

“This is a real craze. In just weeks, demand has tripled in Morocco and other countries in the region,” said Yassine Qamous, chief of Droneway Maroc, African distributor for leading Chinese drone company DJI.

ABN TV reports that Moroccan firms have been using drones for years and Qamous says it “is among the most advanced countries in Africa” for unmanned flight, with a dedicated industrial base, researchers and qualified pilots.

But restrictive regulations have long limited civilian drones to specific applications such as filming, agriculture, monitoring solar panels and mapping.

That changed rapidly as the novel coronavirus swept across the world.

In recent weeks, authorities have employed drones to issue warnings, identify suspicious movement in the streets and disperse illegal rooftop and balcony gatherings.

A strict lockdown imposed in March has not been uniformly respected, with local media reporting on nighttime gatherings of neighbours and collective prayers on roofs, beyond the view of street patrols.

– ‘Vital technology’ –

Last week local authorities in Temara, a town near the capital Rabat, launched a high-precision aerial surveillance system developed by local company Beti3D, which previously specialised in aerial mapping.

Other countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East have also adopted technology deployed in China since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, whether for tracking the movements of citizens, disinfecting public spaces or facilitating deliveries.

“Drones have quickly emerged as a vital technology for public safety agencies during this crisis as they can safely monitor public spaces,” according to the website of DJI, by far the world’s top drone maker.

Like most countries, Morocco primarily uses imported Chinese drones. But the emergence of new applications linked to the COVID-19 pandemic is also driving local production of specialised aerial vehicles.

“There is real demand,” said Abderrahmane Krioual, the head of Farasha, a startup that has raised funds to produce drones for thermal surveillance and aerial disinfectant spraying.

The aeronautics department of the International University of Rabat (UIR) offered its facilities, expertise and prototypes to authorities in March, deploying drones with loudspeakers or infrared cameras able to detect movement at night or spot individuals with high temperatures.

Several projects are underway across the country ahead of the widespread deployment of various models of drones, said Mohsine Bouya, the university’s director of technology development and transfer.

Teams are also developing tracking applications, but “we’ll have to wait for a change to the law” before launching them, he said.

Moroccan authorities declined to comment on the use of drones or the numbers deployed since the start of the public health emergency in mid-March.

– ‘Toxic lockdown culture’ –

Unlike in some countries, the use of surveillance drones has not sparked a public debate in Morocco, where the kingdom’s authoritarian response to the pandemic is widely supported.

Morocco closed its borders early and tasked law enforcement with imposing strict confinement measures on the population.

They include movement restrictions and the compulsory wearing of masks, with a nighttime curfew since the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan — enforced by a heavy police presence.

Those found guilty of violating lockdown measures face one to three months in prison, a fine equivalent to $125, or both.

Officials say police have arrested 85,000 people for breaching lockdown measures between March 15 and April 30, bringing 50,000 prosecutions.

Authorities say the measures have limited transmission of the virus, with 5,053 COVID-19 cases reported including 179 deaths and 1,653 recoveries since the crisis began.

But the kingdom’s high number of arrests has drawn criticism from Georgette Gagnon, director of field operations at the United Nations’ Human Rights Office.

Last week she listed Morocco among countries where repressive coronavirus measures have created a “toxic lockdown culture”.

Morocco disputed this, saying its measures were “in line with legal frameworks respecting human rights”.

Senate Await Details Of Buhari’s N850bn Domestic Loan Request

  • Senate Await Details Of Buhari’s N850bn Domestic Loan Request

The executive arm of government had yet to furnish the Senate with details and breakdown of projects expected to be executed with the N850bn domestic loan request of the President, Muhammadu Buhari. ABN TV reports

The red chamber had last week Tuesday given accelerated approval to the loan request expected to be sourced from the local capital market, despite not having details of the official communication.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, had after the express approval, directed the relevant committees of the Senate to liaise with the Ministry of Finance concerning details of the loan request.

Attempts by our correspondent to speak with the chairmen of the Senate committees on Appropriation and Finance, Messrs Barau Jibrin and Solomon Adeola, failed on Tuesday.

Phone calls to their mobile lines did not connect while none of them had replied the text messages sent to them as of the time of filing this report.

However, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Special Duties, Senator Yusuf Yusuf, confirmed to our correspondent that details of the loan request had not been sent to the Senate.

Yusuf said, “We are still expecting the official communication from the Presidency. What we did was to approve the N850bn borrowing request from the domestic capital market to restructure the budget which is still coming to the National Assembly. We are still waiting for it.

“Details of the outlook of the budget is still being expected and we hope it will include the N500bn SIP request.

“The N850bn is borrowing from the domestic capital market while the N500bn, which is different,   would be squeezed from the system.”
