Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has disclosed what he would do if former President, Goodluck Jonathan defects to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Wike vowed not to support Jonathan if he defects to APC to contest in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, the governor, however, pledged to support Jonathan if he runs for the presidency on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor explained that he would support Jonathan because they both hail from the same South-South region of the country.

He said: “When you said pick ticket, from which party? Is it APC or PDP?.

“To pick ticket means you’re representing the interest of a party. I’m in PDP and I will not be involved in anti-party activities. If he is APC, I won’t support him because I’m not into that kind of politics.

“It is not about ethnicity for me, but about the party. If he joins APC I can’t support him.”

There are rumours of Jonathan planning to defect to the APC ahead of 2023.

Against this backdrop, the APC said it would welcome the former president if he opts to join the party.

Fani-Kayode Coming To Destroy APC, Has No Electoral Value — Joe Igbokwe

All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain and Special Adviser to Governor Bababjide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Drainage and Water Resources, Joe Igbokwe, has faulted the party for accepting former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, FFK, who defected from Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Thursday.

Fani-Kayode was, on Thursday was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of APC, and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

However, Igbokwe, in social media posts that have gone viral, expressed sadness that Fani-Kayode, who he said was not coming to add value to the party, was given a red carpet treatment while his (Igbokwe) efforts go unappreciated.

Igbokwe said he believed that FFK’s coming into the party will not add any electoral value, but tear the party apart, a Vanguard report says.

Igbokwe told Vanguard, “Fani-Kayode is coming to destroy the party. FFK has no electoral value and is not a politically stable man. He thrives where there is something to feast on.”

In one social media post, Igbokwe wrote: “Despite all my push for APC, Abuja has not given me a phone call talk more of inviting me for a coffee with the C-in-C.

“But here is a political charlatan and prostitute being given a red carpet in seat of power-Abuja.”

Another post on Facebook by Igbokwe read in part: “What am I trying to do? What am I trying to make? APC NATIONAL should stand up and take responsibility. Let me not talk about countless APC foot soldiers across Nigeria.

“They shout for APC on empty stomachs. They are called names on a daily basis and accepted all the insults with equanimity and soundness of mind.

“They love Nigeria. They love APC. They love PMB. They love the humongous work APC is doing across.

“They see it. They feel it. They are unrepentant Buharists. They work without anybody giving them a pat on the back.

“They work day and night and even do the work of publicity secretary with their own data and yet nobody cares for them and even the system they are slaving for have not recognised them.

“I have tried my best in Lagos to bring them together on few occasions, pleading for patience and understanding but there is no respite.

“Yet APC will be going round bringing charlatans, enemies, and dolts into the party at the drop a hat.

“APC should look inwards and do the needful. A labourer deserves his pay. Reward hard work and the people will do more.”

2023 Presidency: No Automatic Ticket For Jonathan If He Joins Our Party – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has debunked reports that it will give automatic ticket to Goodluck Jonathan if he joins the party ahead of the 2023 presidential elections, saying its comments on the former president was grossly misrepresented by a section of the populace.

National Secretary of the APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee CECPC, John James Akpanudoedehe issued the clarification in a statement on Friday.

Speculations were rife on Wednesday that the former president who is of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP was on the verge of joining the ruling APC.

Akpanudoedehe said while APC would grant a waiver to all new entrants, it however does not translate to automatic candidacy.

The statement reads; “The All Progressives Congress APC National Executive Committee NEC resolution of 8th December 2020 approved the granting of waivers to persons who have recently joined the party and those desirous of joining the party in the nearest future to contest for positions in the APC and as party flag bearers in general elections.

“By the NEC resolution, new members will enjoy all the benefits and privileges accruable by virtue of their membership of the APC.

“For the records, in my recent television interview reaction to the rumoured plans by former President Goodluck Jonathan to join the APC, my statement was that NEC resolution was a blanket waiver to ALL new APC entrants, including the interviewee.

“The waiver is definitely not specific to anyone as being misconstrued and misrepresented in some sections. Coming into the party gives no one special status of being an automatic party candidate in any election. All aspirants must undergo the nomination processes outlined by the APC constitution.

“Excerpts of APC NEC 8th December, 2020 resolution: ‘…new members will enjoy all the benefits and privileges accruable by virtue of their membership of the party. So, they will be able to contest for positions in the party.

They will be able to contest elections without any requirement of being members for a number of years or period of time’.”

In a statement she personally endorsed in Abuja on Friday, Onyilo observed that the late Barr. Shekarau contributed her very best in making the world liveable for the downtrodden and less privileged.

She said, “It is indeed with deep pain and sadness that we from Phenomenal People Magazine received the news of the death of our trailblazer, friend, sister, human and women’s rights advocate Barrister Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau.

“This is a blow not only to the gender rights movement in the FCT but to our country generally. Barrister Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau has contributed immensely to national development in many spheres including her legal profession, politically, her state, community, and women’s rights specifically women inclusion in governance and campaign against gender based violence.

“She lived a purpose driven life of making the world a better place for all especially the poor and downtrodden.”

“Barrister Hauwa became close to us at the time I was National President of NAWOJ in 2002. She was FCT FIDA Chair. Her tireless efforts together with other key stakeholders led to the passage of the VAPP Act in 2015.

“Since then, we have worked together in many gender related advocacy groups and even some political affiliations. She was kindhearted, warm and humble. She would support any worthy course with her time talent and treasure.

“As Country Director of Ipas, Dr. Hauwa Shekarau gave support to our NGO INWOAD right from its formative period” she noted.

While joining other women rights advocates in the country to mourn the late Barr. Shekarau, Onyilo said her death will create a huge loss to the gender agenda in Nigeria.

Cristiano Ronaldo Causing Many Problems For Solskjaer – Carragher

Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing to Manchester United will cause ‘many problems as it solves’ for the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, this season.

Carragher made the assertion ahead of Man United’s Premier League clash with West Ham on Sunday.

Recall that Ronaldo made a stunning return to Man United from Juventus at the end of the summer transfer window, 12 years after leaving the Red Devils.

The 36-year-old Portugal captain has wasted no time getting off the mark for Man United, scoring two goals in a victory over Newcastle before adding one in a shocking 2-1 Champions League defeat to Young Boys.

“For all the understandable euphoria at Old Trafford with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, his signing causes as many problems as it solves for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer,” Carragher told the Telegraph.

“Ronaldo could prove to be a better signing for the Premier League than for Manchester United.

He added: “The broader question for United is whether Ronaldo’s arrival gets them any nearer to being a team that can win the title and Champions League again.

“On the evidence of the first few games, albeit they have won three of their first five matches, I would say no. Ronaldo’s match-winning ability will inevitably make United stronger. What his arrival alone cannot do is turn United into a title-winning unit or impose the distinctive way of playing they still lack.”

UNIBEN Senate Approves Removal Of N20,000 Late Registration Fee

The Senate of the University of Benin has approved the removal of N20,000 late registration fee that led to a two-day mass protest by students of the institution.

Mr Ademola Bobola, Registrar of the University, announced the removal in a statement issued on Thursday night in Benin.

Bobola noted that the senate, at a virtual meeting, ratified the earlier verbal pronouncement by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Salami was said to have verbally withdrawn the charge on Wednesday when the protesting students reportedly stormed her lodge and forced her to trek a long distance to the school main gate.

The registrar said that the senate, at the second meeting within 24 hours, also approved the decision that money already paid by defaulting students be refunded via modalities to be worked out by the Bursary Department.

“Consequently, lectures are to resume on Monday, Sept. 20, to enable students who obeyed the directive on school closure and travelled, to return.

“The University’s decision-making body also agreed that a new time-line be set for the payment of the school charges for the 2020/2021 Academic Session.

“It also directed that the re-activation of charges for Postgraduate Programmes be sent to the Board of Postgraduate School for review,” he said.

Bobola explained that while the senate reiterated that penalty for late payment of school charges, which has been in existence for years in the university should not be set aside, it, however, called for its modification.

According to him, the senate moved a vote of confidence on the University’s Management and praised the vice-chancellor for her wisdom, courage and magnanimity in acceding to the reason for the students’ protest.

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has asked governors in the southeast to sack any market chairman or tricycle union chairman or National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and as well as any other chairman of commercial unions that continue complying with the Monday sit-at-home.

MASSOB, in a release signed by its leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu on Friday, frowned at the criminal and violent acts of some miscreants in disguise as pro-Biafra agitators causing havoc and atrocities on the suspended Monday’s sit at home exercise in the region.

According to the group, “We can no longer watch criminals destroying the economies of Ndigbo in the name of sit at home exercise”, describing such tendency as acceptable.

The group warned Biafra agitators to avoid tendencies that derail the political, economical, and social interest of Ndigbo while in Nigeria.

MASSOB however reiterated that it would continue to propagate and uphold the interest of the Igbo nation in Nigeria.

The statement partly said, “MASSOB starting from Monday, 20th of September, there will be no more sit at home exercise for the people of Biafra.

“The weekly sit-at-home exercise has inflicted uncountable economic injuries to Ndigbo. It is an exercise in futility.

“The weekly sit-at-home exercises are no longer for Biafra actualization and restoration, it is setting the struggle backward.

“We shall not relent in speaking out against the factors that militate and opposes the general interest of Ndigbo in Nigeria. Ndigbo are facing a serious and critical dispossession in Nigeria”.

NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Against Storing Foods In Chemical Containers

Nigerians have been warned by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) to stop storing food items in containers originally used for chemicals that are harmful to health.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye said this on Thursday, September 16, during a sensitisation campaign in Onitsha, Anambra State.

She explained that containers previously used to store chemicals should not be used to store food items, even when they’ve been washed thoroughly.

She added that such containers contain carcinogenic substances, which no amount of washing can remove and would have harmful effects on humans in the long run.

The DG, who was represented by the Director of Chemical Evaluation and Research Directorate, Mrs. Ngozi Onuora, had led a team of NAFDAC top management officials to the palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.

Speaking about the dangers of storing food in containers previously used for chemicals, she said: “It is harmful to use kerosene tankers to load groundnut oil, to use potassium bromate to bake bread so as to improve the dough.

“We also advise market women to desist from using chemicals to quicken the ripening of fruits like plantains and bananas because it is dangerous to health.”

She explained that the three-day programme would help to sensitize youths on the dangers of taking codeine and tramadol, as well as the harmful effect of other dangerous drugs on their health.

The NAFDAC boss added that the visit was to solicit the monarch’s cooperation in disseminating information on the dangers of drug abuse in the country, stressing that a well-informed society would address the demand side of drug abuse.

She also called on Nigerians to stop buying medicine from hawkers but patronize approved medicine shops.
