Afakallah explained that the measure was aimed at curtailing the menace and reducing the possibility of young people adopting criminal acts. He added that once viewers have seen an actor engage in these acts in movies, they will also want to indulge in the acts.

He added: “Not every young man has the tenacity of understanding fictitious films actions. Somebody might mistaken it as a reality and may go ahead to practice it, therefore, we must act now before it is too late.”

Court Adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Over Absence Of FG’s Counsel

Amidst heavy presence of security agents, the Abia State High Court, Umuahia today (21st September 2021) adjourned Nnamdi Kanu’s fundamental rights Suit filed before the Abia court by his Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor on 27th August, 2021.

ABN TV reports that the matter came up before the vacation judge, Justice KCJ Okereke.

Speaking to the media, Barrister Ejimakor expressed confidence in the capacity of the Abia High Court to uphold the law by enforcing Kanu’s human rights. Ejimakor said that “there is an unbroken chain of federal government’s violations of Kanu’s constitutional rights that began with the lethal military invasion of his home in Umuahia and his flight to safety in 2017 and his extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in late June 2021”.

At today’s hearing, it emerged that out of the eight respondents, only two – the DSS in Abuja and Umuahia – have filed their reply to the Suit but their processes were filed out of time. Their Counsel, Ms Odukwe was court. Nothing was received from the other six respondents, which included the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Nigerian Army, and no counsel appeared on their behalf.

It also emerged that an apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, the Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) has filed an application seeking leave of the Court to file an amicus (friend of the court) brief in support of Kanu. ADF is led by Emeritus Professor Uzodimma Nwala and the application was brought by its counsel, Max Ozoaka.

Barrister Ejimakor appeared for Kanu in the company of several lawyers, two of whom were introduced as Barristers Patrick Agazie and Wilson Kalu.

In making his ruling for adjournment of the matter, the Judge noted that Kanu shall be entitled to certain reliefs against any party that fails to timely respond to the Suit.

When queried on the chances of success of the Suit, Barrister Ejimakor drew some inspiration from the 17th September, 2021 fundamental rights judgment of Oyo State High Court in favor of Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) and against the federal government.
Ejimakor said that “the Oyo State High Court judgment in Igboho’s case (which is similar to Kanu) restates the locus classicus on the wide jurisdiction of State High Courts when it comes to enforcement of the fundamental rights stipulated under the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter”.

2023 Presidency: Igbo May Lose Out As Gov. Sule Says APC Will Support Osinbajo

0

The expectation of Igbo APC leaders to produce the next President may hit the rock as the governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, said on Monday that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo will enjoy the support of the All Progressives Congress, APC, if he shows interest in contesting the 2023 presidential election.

He stated this when he met with members of the Progressives Consolidation Group, PCG, in Lafia, the state capital.

Although Osinbajo has not declared interest in the 2023 presidential race, the group said it was in Nasarawa to solicit the governor’s support for him.

Noting that Vice President Osinbajo was ‘’sellable’’, the Nasarawa governor said APC governors would support his presidential bid.

He said: “Our concern is how we will sustain the party beyond President Buhari. So, if you come up with the idea, you know you will not only get my attention but the attention of every progressive governor in the country.

“So, if you are going about to sell this man, I want you to know that not every product is sellable but Osinbajo is sellable.

“I pray that all the work you are doing now will not be in vain. It will be good for our party and the progress of this country.”

In his remarks, Aliyu Kurfi, chairman of the group, said if he was given the opportunity to become president, Osinbajo would make Nigeria a better place.

“We are here sir on a very serious business, the serious business of political succession. We are on our mission but engineered by the vision of one of our elder statesmen, Vice-President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

“We have gone through the various records of activities, life histories and of course the trends of events in politics and we have agreed as an association to work towards the promotion of his candidature.

“We made this decision because we believe with all honesty that we have a professional gentleman, if given the opportunity will not only continue the good work of Mr President, but with gentlemen like you to support, make Nigeria a better place for all of us.

“His foresight in so many areas will be useful for Nigeria. He is detribalised and a man who is detached from the shallow thinking of many of us who are tribal bigots.

“We believe we have a gentleman whose thinking is simply that of Nigeria and Nigeria alone.

“We believe he is a gentleman whose political competence knows no bounds. So we have every reason to sell him for the benefit of Nigeria,’’ he said.
