According to the clergy, the history of Nigeria will not be complete without the Presbyterian Church, saying for 175 years of existence, the Church has done so much among the first Churches that came in Nigeria, stressing that they have produced people of honesty and integrity.

He charged the Presbyterian Church not to be satisfied with what they have but be ready for the next level.

He emphasized that people should do the right thing and avoid being wicked with their position, but love and not to oppress those under their care.

Abia North Stakeholders Laud Sen. Kalu Over Distribution Of Educational Materials To Schools [VIDEO]

0

Stakeholders in Abia North have commended the Senator representing the district and Senate Chief Whip, Sen. Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu over the flag-off of the distribution of educational materials to primary and secondary school pupils in the zone.

The exercise which took place Monday started with Ohafia, expected to go round the entire local governments that make up the zone.

One of such stakeholders, Hon. Steve Anagha, a native of Ohafia local government said Sen Kalu’s representation in the past two years has been phenomenal.

The distribution of school bags and millions of textbooks of various subjects for all the primary and secondary school pupils and students in Abia North comes after the former Abia governor had earlier renovated schools and donated seats for the comfort of pupils, students, and their teachers around the zone.

Anagha said that through Kalu’s exceptional works in Abia North, he has repeatedly shown other zones in Nigeria what Senatorial representation looks like.

In his note of commendation, Anagha on Monday thanked Kalu for flagging off the distribution of the educational materials.

He said he has shown Ohafia exceptional love by extending all necessary amenities to the local government.

“Orji Uzor Kalu built many roads for us;  gave us water; renovated our schools; gave our children employment; empowered several families, and today he is distributing school bags and textbooks to all the primary and secondary school students in government schools.

“His performance as our senator is only but phenomenal. We have never experienced such leadership and we are grateful and thankful to God. The last time we enjoyed such leadership in Abia  was between 1999-2007 when Kalu was Governor.”

“We miss his years as Governor when he instituted free education in all categories.  Nobody paid school fees and we wish he can repeat that again. Despite being a Senator for Abia North, we would love him to institute free education in the entire state”, Anagha said.

Recall that Senator Kalu was recently bestowed with the prestigious Senate award for constituency development by the Senate Press corps in recognition of his impressive representation and expedition of massive constituency projects in his Abia North.

LaLiga: Barcelona Cannot Play Tiki-Taka – Ronald Koeman

0

Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman, has criticized his players including Philippe Coutinho and Gerard Pique following their 1-1 draw with Granada in a LaLiga clash on Monday night.

Koeman also admitted his current crop of players cannot play ‘Tiki-taka’, after failing to beat Granada at Camp Nou.

After Granada took the lead in the second minute through Domingos Duarte, Barcelona needed a late header from Ronald Araujo to salvage a draw at home.

Speaking to reporters at his post-match press conference after the game, Koeman said: “If you see the squad list today do you really think we can play tiki-taka?.

“Barca right now is not the Barca of eight years ago. We play the Barca way but we don’t have the speed in wide areas because we have [Philippe] Coutinho who cuts inside and [Yusuf] Demir who doesn’t reach the byline much.

“When Ansu Fati and [Ousmane] Dembele come back then we will be different but they are not fit so we have to find alternatives.”

The result against Granada means Barcelona are now in the seventh position on the LaLiga table.

Juventus, Atletico Madrid Interested In Saka

Juventus and Atletico Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka and are expected to make a move this season.

Saka has become an instrumental player for Mikel Arteta – having made five Premier League appearances and four starts so far this season.

The 20-year-old also played a fundamental role in helping England reach the Euro 2020 final this summer which they lost to Italy.

As a result, Arsenal will be reluctant to let their rising star leave the club this season and will therefore attach a hefty price tag to his name to deter any potential suitors.

According to CalcioMercato, Juventus are keeping tabs on the Arsenal winger. However, they will face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid – who are also interested in Saka’s services.

Arsenal – who are fully aware of the growing interest in their youngster – will not let Saka leave the club for any less than £43million, according to reports.

Saka – who signed a new four-year contract in July last year- also forced himself into Gareth Southgate’s thinking for Euro 2020 after an excellent season with Arsenal.

He scored seven goals and registered 10 assists for the Gunners. Following that, he went on to become one of the stars of the European Championship this summer.

However, he later received hateful racist messages after he, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford did not score from the spot in a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy in the final.

Saka has since returned to the Premier League – playing the full 90 minutes in their 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday.

Irrespective Of Who The President Is, North Will Continue To Rule Nigeria — Akintoye

0

Yoruba Nation arrowhead, Prof Banji Akintoye, says the north will continue to rule and dominate Nigeria regardless of whoever is in power as President.

He spoke from Benin Republic in a PUNCH Live Interview monitored by ABN TV on Tuesday.

Akintoye made the comments days after the Northern Elders Forum said the north would not play second fiddle in a nation where it clearly enjoys numerical strength to win presidential elections.

ABN TV had earlier reported that NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, at an event in Zaria on Saturday, said, “We will lead Nigeria the way we have led Nigeria before whether we are President or Vice President, we will lead Nigeria. We have the majority of the votes and democracy says vote whom you want.

“Why should we accept a second class position when we know we can buy a form and contest for first class and we will win?

“Why does anybody need to threaten us and intimidate us? We will get that power but be humble because power comes from God. We inherited the leadership and being honest is not being stupid.

“The North has pride; we are humble enough to know that we are going to run Nigeria with other people but we are not going to pay second fiddle to anybody. We may not have the most robust economy, there are people who are trying to strangulate us even more than we are being strangled.”

With the 2023 elections approaching, political permutations have been intense with many Nigerians including the 17 Southern governors demanding a President from Southern Nigeria to replace the incumbent, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is from Katsina State, North-West Nigeria.

Speaking on The PUNCH Online programme, 86-year-old Akintoye, a scholar and a Professor of History, said the north had always wanted to “conquer” the rest of the country.

Though he did not make any direct reference to the statement credited to the NEF spokesman, Akintoye said Nigeria is no longer a country because of the dominance of one ethnic group over others.

He said, “It has reached a time now that Nigeria is no longer a country. Why do I say this? There is no other country in the world where one section, one region says, ‘We are going to conquer the rest, we are going to subdue you, we will make ourselves the controllers of the resources of your land, we will treat you more or less like slaves’.”

Akintoye said though some Southerners including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan had been in power since the return to democratic rule, they operated under the rulership of the north.

He said, “Whoever rules Nigeria rules in the context of a country that is owned and dominated by the north; by north, I mean the north-west.

“Under Obasanjo as President, the northern elite converted the north against the constitution of Nigeria into a separate Islamic state. Obasanjo could not do anything about it… That was a dangerous philosophy that was being foisted upon Nigeria and nobody did anything about it.

“Yes, Obasanjo is a beloved son of the Yoruba race, we love him but we know that he ruled in a situation when the President of Nigeria was beholding on to powers under the tables that the rest of us could not do anything about. Not to talk of (Vice President Yemi) Osinbajo.

“Osinbajo is one of the most educated men who have taken part in the governance of Nigeria, see the thing he is doing, is he doing them freewill?”

Akintoye, the leader of the umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination group known as Ilana Omo Oodua, and the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, have been seen together at press conferences and rallies championing the cause to secede from the Nigerian state and establish a Yoruba Nation.

When asked why he is embarking on such a mission at his age, the octogenarian replied, “Yes, I am doing it at a late age but if I do not do this, I do not want to go to the grave with a feeling that a country I love and gave my life is dying in my presence and I just stay there until the power of God comes to take me home. No, I want to be able to say to myself that I fought a good fight and when I see Chief (Obafemi) Awolowo, I’d be sure that he would open his arms and welcome me as a good boy. I have to do this now.”

He also assured Yoruba Nation agitators that Igboho would soon regain his freedom from the authorities of the French-speaking West-African nation.

Igboho, who was earlier declared wanted by the Nigerian Government, has been in a detention facility in Cotonou, Benin Republic, since July 19, 2021, when he was arrested at an airport in the country.

Joshua Sends Warning To Usyk Ahead Heavyweight Showdown

0

Anthony Joshua has warned challenger Oleksandr Usyk he may be in over his head. Usyk will take on Joshua at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday night after just two pro fights at heavyweight.

Joshua says the unbeaten former undisputed cruiserweight world champ is taking a gamble by fighting him when he has relatively little experience at heavyweight.

He feels Usyk has “jumped in at the deep end” and says Saturday will be sink or swim time.

“He’s done well at heavyweight,” said the unified WBA Super, IBF and WBO champ.

“The difference is when say Evander Holyfield came up to heavyweight, I think he had six fights at heavyweight before he fought for the championship belt. That was against Buster Douglas.

“Usyk’s fought two heavyweights. He’s obviously had the experience of fighting at heavyweight in the World Series of Boxing when he was an amateur, but he’s jumping in at the deep end early on.

“But good luck to him, he must believe in himself. He wants to be at the top end early.

“It’s better to swim deep – to get in there and get on with it – rather than tread water. You could still end up drowning anyway. You could still get caught in a current and drown.

“You might as well jump in the deep end and try to survive.”
