Nigerians Without NIN Won’t Get Passports, Driving Licence – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC says the October 31 deadline for linking their National Identity Numbers (NIN) with their Subscriber Identity Modules remains sacrosanct.

It also said that Nigerians without NIN would soon be denied the opportunity of acquiring driving licences and passports.

The commission said at the NCC Digital Signature radio programme, which transmitted the second episode of Telecoms Consumer Town Hall on Radio (live on a radio station in Lagos to discuss benefits of NIN-SIM integration.

This was disclosed in a statement titled ‘NIN-SIM Integration: NCC sensitises telecom consumers on October 31 Deadline’ signed by NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, on Wednesday.

The statement read, “NCC has reminded and urged telecoms consumers to link their NINs with their SIMs before the expiration of the deadline of October 31, 2021 set by the Federal Government.”

It added, “Speaking during the live programme, Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, advised Nigerians to make use of the extension of the NIN-SIM integration exercise to October 31, 2021, to enrol with NIMC, get their NINs and link them to their SIMs.”

Adinde said, “Soon, people without NIN will be denied of necessary services that play vital roles in their lives including acquisition of driving licence, passport.”

The statement further said, “On the benefits of the NIN-SIM integration, Adinde said the exercise will significantly enhance national security as NIN is the primary identity for Nigerians, stressing that in line with Federal Government’s commitment to ensure that Nigeria deploys technology to improve service delivery, the NIN-SIM database will enhance citizens’ access to government services.”

Also speaking on the show, NCC’s Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau of NCC, Efosa Idehen, said, “Those SIMs without unique identification could be used to commit crimes that remain untraceable.”

The Regional Director of NIMC in Lagos, Funmi Opesanwo, who also spoke on the programme, said that submission of NIN to a mobile network provider helped to provide a means of verifying an individual’s identity and safeguarding both identity and mobile line.

CBN Places N1Million Limit On eNaira Single Transaction

Merchants are barred from exceeding N1 million a deal on eNaira transactions, the Central Bank guideline on the usage of the digital currency indicates.

This is part of the operating model and prototype design of the payment platform due to take off on Friday.

While the N1 million ceiling is placed on sending and receiving money per transaction on the eNaira, there is no limit to the amount merchants can sweep to their bank accounts.

The regulator is however working out the final transaction costs for digital currency users.

The Project Giant, unveiled by the CBN to banks, sets limits for eNaira transactions to be conducted by digital currency users with banks and merchants.

According to the CBN presentation, Tier 1 consumers with no existing bank account are to conduct daily transaction sending and receiving limit of N50, 000 each and cumulative daily balance of N300, 000.

For Tier 2 consumers (those operating bank accounts), the CBN pegged daily transaction for sending and receiving at N200, 000 each with N500, 000 cumulative balance.

The CBN pegged daily transaction for sending and receiving for Tier 3 consumers (with existing accounts) at N1 million each and cumulative daily balance at N5 million.

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele had listed the benefits of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) to include increased cross-border trade, accelerated financial inclusion, cheaper and faster remittance inflows, easier targeted social interventions, as well as improvements in monetary policy effectiveness, payment systems efficiency, and tax collection.

Stating that it took the issue of security very seriously, the CBN added that the eNaira system will be treated as a National Critical Infrastructure even as the system will be subjected to comprehensive security checks prior to go-live.

Banks are expected to market and promote the adoption of eNaira as a digital version of cash to existing and potential customers in support of financial inclusion objective of the CBN.

According to the guidelines, Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) will be allowed to invite all their customers to register for the eNaira.

With pre-generated codes, the banks can send invitation codes for on-boarding to a specific list of selected customers. On-boarding will be done for customers who have a code assigned by their banks. The banks have already validated and verified these customers.

The apex bank has specified the roles to be played by monetary authority, including the CBN, financial institutions, government agencies, businesses and merchants, banked and unbanked consumers as well as how the new currency would be designed and operated.

Participants in the e-Naira programme are featured in five stages, including monetary authority suite; the CBN will be handing the first product component that includes issue, distribute, redeem and destroy the currency. Store data on a cloud server, monitor and analyse currency transactions.

Under the financial institution suite, licensed financial institution will be able to request currency or issue stable coins, manage digital currency across branches, Know Your Customer (KYC), identify and anti-money laundering compliance capability.

In the eGovernment suite, the government will be able to efficiently process digital payments sent to and received from citizens and businesses.

Merchants will provide low-cost payment and business management software, Point of Sale (PoS), remote payment solutions, online capabilities, transaction analysis and reconciliation.

The retail consumer suite features user-centred designs for a great user experience. The architecture will be expandable to enable innovation; features advanced privacy and security.

The CBN has also outlined transaction cost for the eNaira wallet.

Veteran Nollywood Actor, Francis Duru Loses Dad

Nollywood actor Francis Duru announced the demise of his father, ten months after his mother’s death.

The actor took to his Instagram page on Wednesday to share the last picture he took with his father, breaking the news of his loss.

In an emotional tribute, Duru eulogised his father while recalling that his mother ‘just left’.

His caption read, “My last pix with you..dad..memories of yesterday..0 defined my essence…built my being…took the tough and the rough to put me on the turf…of life..I salute you dad…as you took your last bow and transited to glory…you broke my heart this morning when you refused to wake..mum just left..you too ..hmm…so heavy…so painful…thank you..thank you…thank you dad for all..thank you..Will miss you…” (sic)

In November last year, the actor broke the news of his mother’s demise via Instagram three days before her burial.

The burial ceremony, which was held at Duru’s hometown in Mbano, Imo State, was attended by his colleagues and other celebrities.

Duru’s mother died at the age of 76. However, the actor did not disclose his father’s age while announcing the latter’s demise.

The Department of State Security Services, DSS has denied any involvement in the murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of late NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili.

The secret police in a statement made available to ABN TV, signed by its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, called on the general public to disregard such rumours.

The statement read in full; “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to an allegation that its operatives killed Dr. Chike Akunyili. Also, the Service was alerted to a social media video claiming that the “Nigerian DSS” murdered security escorts at Nkpor, Anambra State on 28th September, 2021.”

“The Service hereby denies these allegations and wishes to clearly state that they are spurious and illogical. There was no basis for the DSS to kill the Medical Doctor and/or fellow law enforcement agents. The Service cherishes life and believes in the rule of law.”

“The public should therefore be wary of the false narratives by those desirous of using it (the Service) to cover up their heinous acts. The operations of these hostile elements are already well known in the public space and to the discerning. Moreover, their desperate effort to divert attention or deploy reverse psychology to deceive unsuspecting members of the public has become a stock in trade that has defined their patterns and trends. The Chairman South East, APC National Youth Caucus, Engr Emma Uche Adimoha has congratulated the Senate Chief Whip, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu over his victory at the federal high Court Abuja on Wednesday against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The court presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo had granted the relief sought by Sen. Kalu, former governor of Abia State where he insists he cannot be tried twice over the same offence of financial misappropriation during his tenure as governor of Abia State.

In a congratulatory letter titled, ‘SENATOR ORJI UZOR KALU AND THE HAND OF GOD‘ Engr Emma Uche Adimoha said retrying Sen. Kalu over one allegation will amount to double jeopardy, saying such is strange to the law and in the hand of God.

Gov. Obiano Places N20m Bounty On Chike Akunyili’s Killers

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has placed a bounty of N20 million on the killers of Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband of late NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili, ABN TV has learned.

In a public address on Wednesday evening, Obiano condemned the recent spate of attacks in different areas of the state.

In his words; “I have received from Security Commanders, Offices of some political parties, branded campaign vehicles and individuals occupying them have been attacked with killings and burning of vehicles observed.”

“Other innocent road users have become victims of this menace with many losing their lives and others, their properties.”

“Between Sunday 26th and yesterday 28th September, 2021 attacks on citizens at Oko, Agulu, Obosi, Nkpor, Nnobi, Nnewi and other places have left about ten (10) people dead including an illustrious son of this State, Dr Chike Akunyili, husband of late Prof Dora Akunyili who was reportedly gunned down yesterday around Nkpor.”

“These are our own people dying every day and for what reason? Ndi Anambra, these attacks and accompanying deaths cannot be justified and must stop now.”

The Governor disclosed that he has summoned a security meeting to carve out strategies to tackle the menace.

“I have therefore conducted an extensive security meeting and have directed all Security Agencies to step up and confront this monster ravaging our land. I charge everyone involved in the security architecture of Anambra State to take very seriously, this threat to our livelihood and boldly rise to confront same. Everything that needs to be done will be done and no stone will be left unturned in this effort. My directive to this effect is clear and i urge every security personnel on duty in Anambra State to do his utmost best to secure our people.”

“To all citizens of Anambra State and every person living and doing business in our State, I urge you now to join forces with us to confront this common enemy. We cannot condone this savagery for any reason whatsoever.”

“I, therefore, call on all our youths in the State to rise up and protect our communities. Traditional Rulers, Presidents General, Clergymen, Vigilante Groups and all leadership structures must now take responsibility and in conjunction with the Police, Military and other Law Enforcement Agencies, work to restore order immediately.”

“To reinforce our commitment and seriousness on this issue, I on behalf of the State Government, wish to announce a twenty million Naira (N20,000,000.00) reward for any useful information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of these heinous attacks on our State. Court Remands Ex-Police Officer CPL Nwachukwu For Allegedly Raping Abia Poly Student

A magistrate court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State capital on Wednesday remanded an ex-policeman, Corporal Chinedu Nwachukwu for allegedly raping a female student of Abia State Polytechnic, ABN TV reports.

CPL Nwachukwu was arraigned on Wednesday following his orderly room trial at the headquarters of Abia State police command Umuahia on Tuesday which found him guilty of raping a student of Abia State Polytechnic.

He was subsequently dismissed and arraigned in line with the administrative procedure of the police.

Spokesperson of Abia State police command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed Nwachukwu’s remand to ABN TV.

Earlier, CP Janet Agbede, Commissioner of Police Abia State Command had told ABN TV that Nwachukwu will have his days in court where he would face trial as a civilian following his dismissal from the police.

FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday, October 1 as a public holiday to mark the 61st Independence anniversary celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.

He congratulated all Nigerians on the 61st independence and assured of the government’s commitment to tackle and eradicate all forms of challenges and all diverse problems.

Kaduna Bans Transportation Of Livestock, Shuts Down Markets

The Kaduna state government has banned the transportation of livestock, firewood, and charcoal over the recent activities of bandits in the state.

The state government in a statement on Wednesday, made available to ABN TV, disclosed several stern measures taken to eliminate the activities of Bandits in the state.

The press release, signed by Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security, read;

“I am here to inform you of, and to formally announce the implementation of certain measures to assist the security agencies in parts of the state.”

“You will recall that Governor Nasir El-Rufai announced in a media chat yesterday (28th September 2021) that the state government has formally requested the Federal Government to enforce the shutdown of telecom services in parts of the state identified by security agencies as requiring such measures.”

“The relevant federal agencies have today informed the Kaduna State Government that the processes for telecoms shutdown in parts of the state have commenced.”

“As part of the steps to address the current security situation in Kaduna State and neighbouring states in the North-West and North-Central regions, KDSG has held several meetings with security agencies to adopt critical measures towards crushing bandits in their identified hideouts.”

“The military and other security forces have been carrying out assaults on the identified locations. The state government is advised that certain measures are now necessary to assist the spirited efforts of these security agencies.”

“The following measures become effective from Thursday, 30 September 2021:

1. The complete ban on the use of motorcycles (Okada), for commercial or personal purposes, for three months in the first instance.

2. Ban on possession of or wielding of dangerous weapons.

3. Tricycles are allowed to operate only from 6am to 7pm. All tricycles must remove all curtains. Movement of all tricycles are restricted from dusk till dawn (7PM to 6AM).

4. All vehicles used for commercial transport must be painted in yellow and black within 30 days. Vehicles that are part of ride hailing services are to carry yellow and black stripes.

5. Ban on the sale of petrol in jerry-cans or other containers in Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Chikun, Igabi, Kachia, Kagarko and Kajuru LGAs.

Other containment measures previously communicated by the Kaduna State Government remain in place. These include:

a. Ban on felling of trees and forestry activities in Birnin Gwari, Giwa Igabi, Chikun, Kachia, Kagarko, and Kajuru LGAs.

b. Ban on firewood and charcoal transportation.

c. Ban on the transportation of livestock into and out of the State.

d. Cessation of weekly markets in the frontline local government areas of Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Chikun, Igabi, Kajuru, and Kawo weekly market of Kaduna North local government.

“The Kaduna State Government regrets the severe strain and inconvenience these measures will place on peaceful and law-abiding citizens. The Government, therefore, appeals for the understanding and cooperation of all residents of the affected areas, and indeed across the State. These difficult times have demanded that difficult decisions be made.”

“The measures have been adopted purely in the interest of our collective safety and security, and to aid our brave forces in their fight against these mindless criminals.”

“Too many lives have been lost, and too many families have been shattered. Small groups of wicked persons cannot continue to hold us to ransom, and force us to live in perpetual fear.”

“Once again, the government craves the understanding of all citizens. The hardship we face will be temporary, and we are confident that in the end, it will pay off. Good will prevail over evil.”
