Hon. Onuigbo Weeps As MOUAU Final Year Student Dies In Failed Portion Of Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene Road

Memeber Representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Sam Onuigbo has expressed sadness over the death of Miss Chidinma Ogbonna, a final year student of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

Miss Ogbonna passed on on Sunday, October 3 along the Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene Road, over what we lawmaker described as ‘reckless action of a driver’.

Recall that the lawmaker had last week assured that palliative work will commence on the failed portion of the road this week to ameliorate sufferings commuters face on the road while also assuring that his office is in touch with the federal ministry of works and housing to ensure that the contractor handling the road returns to site to bring a lasting solution to it.

In a condolence message on Monday, Hon. Onuigbo described as great tragedy the death of Miss Ogbonna, urging the family, management, staff, and students of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike to take heart over the incident.

Highlighting efforts he had made to make the road passable, Hon. Onuigbo said, “I would like to point out that I have always been concerned about the pains our people have been facing on that road due to abandonment by the contractor(which on its own was caused by inadequate funding by the Federal Government).

“As far back as March 9, 2021, I had written to the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency(FERMA) alerting them that the road had failed.

“Last week, I also reached out to FERMA on the need to carry out emergency repairs on the badly failed sections of the road, and then follow up with proper palliative works for the whole stretch when the dry season sets in. FERMA responded positively to that request and have now started work.

“As at Saturday, October 2, 2021, FERMA had already started moving materials to the road. They will see to it that those very bad sections are fixed in order to ameliorate the sufferings of our people. I urge all of us to cooperate with them so that they can carry out their works effectively.”

While calling on the people of the constituency to join forces with him to draw attention to the bad state of the road, Hon. Onuigbo called on commuters to exercise caution while plying the road to reduce avoidable deaths.

President Buhari Appoints Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf As FCT Chief Judge

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday asked the Senate to confirm the nomination of Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf for appointment as the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Senate President Ahmad Lawan read Buhari’s letter on the floor at plenary.

Buhari on August 14 named Justice Baba-Yusuf as the Acting Chief Judge of the FCT.

Governor Fayemi Signs Drugs Management Bill Into Law

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has assented t the Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency Bill.

The governor said the law was introduced to provide a strong legal basis for the establishment of The Ekiti State Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency.

Fayemi spoke in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, yesterday while signing the bill into law as part of activities marking his third year in office, saying a sum of N80 million has been approved as seed funding for the established agency.

The governor submitted that the bill will lay a solid legal background for the manufacturing, procurement, distribution, sales, and management of drugs and medical commodities in the state.

“Drugs and medical supplies are essential parts of our health system. Ensuring that health facilities in the State have essential drugs and medical
supplies that can be readily available when needed is key to delivering Universal Health Coverage for the people of Ekiti State.

“A successful drug and medical supply system can only be possible when there is a strong regulatory system backed by law, that enables the ability for quality manufacturing and the management of an efficient supply chain.

“The Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency Act will address the menace of low-quality drugs in circulation and drug stockouts in the State, ensuring that high-quality drugs are constantly available in the State at very affordable prices”, he said.

The governor stated that the Act is also critical to making Ekiti become a regional hub for quality healthcare delivery because, with it, the state would have the legitimacy to engage big pharmaceuticals on contract to get the best quality of drugs at the best prices.

“This Act will also strengthen our public-private partnerships by allowing us to attract a diverse set of private sector partners who can catalyze the consumer market in our State, further improving the health-seeking behaviour of our people.

“Drug and health commodities revolving fund while facilitating our manufacturing capacity for local production of drugs and other health commodities. As I assent to this Bill, it is expected that all relevant stakeholders will move swiftly to action to ensure that the Drugs and Health Commodities Management Agency is established in the closest possible time and operations begin in earnest,” he added.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, noted that the establishment of the State Central Medical store lacked the adequate funding and systems to ensure efficient drug supply chains and zero stock-out.

“Before now, there was no service level agreement with manufacturers and drug suppliers. There was limited enforcement of the available drug management policy. There was no streamlined framework for the purchase of drugs within the State, by health facilities and other service providers.

“The quality, safety, efficacy and equitable accessibility to drugs and health commodities is hinged on strong regulatory systems, quality manufacturing, and efficient supply chains,” he said.

Adamawa State Poly Seeks Approval To Recruit 70 Lecturers

Prof. Ibrahim Umar, Rector, Adamawa State Polytechnic, has urged Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to approve recruitment of 70 academic staff to fill the vacancies in some departments of the institution.

Umar made the call at the inauguration of the TETFund physical infrastructure projects in the institution on Monday in Yola.

He said about 70 staff of the institution withdrew their services, especially in the Department of Mass Communication, Christian Religious Education, Architectural Technology, Building Technology and School of Agriculture.

He said: “Your Excellency may wish to recall that approval was given for the retention of 284 staff in October 2018.

“However, some 70 of the 284 staff withdrew their services, which created vacuum in some departments.”

The Rector also called for the construction of road network to befit the modern edifices provided by the TETFund.

According to Umar, the polytechnic is one of the oldest tertiary institutions without good road network.

In his address, Fintiri commended TETFund for the intervention in providing the necessary infrastructural development in the institution.

Fintiri, represented by Dr. Dishi Khobi, Commissioner for Tertiary and Professional Education, said the government would consider the request for the construction of road network in the school.

“We will continue to provide enabling environment for full accreditation of all the courses already earmarked to commence HND and degree programmes,” he said.

The governor said the state government was making efforts in provide qualitative atmosphere to achieve academic excellence.

Fintiri enjoined the staff and students to be committed to their duties and studies as well as shun acts capable of breaking law and order in the institution.

FG Scrutinises 300 Inmates In Lagos For Presidential Pardon

The Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy has begun assessment of inmates in Lagos State for freedom under the Prerogative Mercy of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abubakar Malami (SAN), Chairman of the committee and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, kicked-off the exercise at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

Malami was represented by Leticia Ayoola-Daniel, the Lead at the committee sitting.

He said about 300 inmates would be scrutinised in Lagos State, while 80 would be considered for pardon.

He, however, said the pardon would depend on whether the inmates under consideration would meet the criteria.

The Minister said the criteria included critical illness, old age and more than 10 years in custody.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the committee was inaugurated on August 28, 2019 to assist the president in the discharge of his responsibility of granting pardon to deserving convicts as provided under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution.

Malami said the prerogative of mercy covered federal offences alone, including bunkering.

The Minister said that the committee was reconvened on September 28 to carry out the task in all the six political zones.

Malami said: “It is note worthy to mention that the committee was reconvened bearing in mind the importance of the mandate of the committee.

“I am using this opportunity to express this committee’s appreciation to our partners in the exercise: Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Minister of Interior, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola; and Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, among others.”

Malami said the committee had earlier visited Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja, where about 40 inmates had been scrutinised.

He said about 300 inmates would be assessed in Lagos State.

“However, only 80 names of inmates who meet the criteria, both males and females, would be submitted to the National Council of States for onward recommendation to President Buhari,” he added.
