Barca Could Have Kept Messi If They Didn’t Sign Aguero, Depay – Laliga President

0

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has said Barcelona could have kept Argentine star Lionel Messi if they had not signed Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.

Messi, 34, joined Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer because Barca, whose gross debt is close to €1.4 billion, could not afford to renew his contract.

Barca president Joan Laporta confirmed in August the club could have kept Messi if they had agreed to LaLiga’s deal to sell 10% of its business to CVC Capital Partners.

That operation would have been worth around €270 million to Barca, but they refused to sign off the sale, with Laporta saying it would have mortgaged off the club’s future.

According to Tebas, the deal would have allowed Barca to renew Messi’s contract at Camp Nou.

Tebas added that it would also have been possible to keep Messi if they hadn’t brought in Memphis and Aguero earlier in the summer.

“I had dinner at Laporta’s house and he agreed to sign the CVC agreement,” Tebas, who believes Real Madrid president Florentino Perez forced Barca to pull out of the deal, told Cope.

“I didn’t know if Messi could renew because of that, but later I got a call [from Laporta]. ‘Can we accelerate the CVC deal? The kid [Messi] is getting nervous,’ he said.

“I told him: ‘The day it comes out, Florentino is going to try and burst it.’ And Laporta told me: ‘No, no, I have character.’ Florentino’s behind it all, I have no doubt.

“There was an agreement that if [Barca] signed the CVC deal, they could have put 15% of the money towards signing players. In my opinion, they could have signed Messi.

“Laporta signed players like Memphis, Aguero… if he didn’t sign those players, Messi could continue.”

Barca, along with Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, opted against signing the deal with CVC. The other 17 top flight clubs in Spain all accepted the operation, which rewarded them with an immediate cash injection.

CVC, in return, will take a 10% cut of LaLiga’s business, including television rights, for the next 50 years, although they won’t take a percentage of Barca, Madrid and Athletic’s earnings.

As a result of not signing up to the deal, and after registering losses of €481m last season, Barca’s LaLiga spending limit for the campaign has been cut to just €97m.

Last season, that limit was set at over €300m, while in 2019-20, prior to the pandemic, it was over €600m. The limit covers spending on first-team wages, academy costs and amortisation payments on transfers, among other things.

Alleged Indictment Of Peter Obi A Distraction By Those Who Have Failed To Provide Leadership — Group

…..Says Sponsors Jittery Over Obi’s enviable political profile

A South West socio-cultural group, Yoruba For National Renaissance (YNR) has expressed regret over a report published by a leading online newspaper in Nigeria, Premium Times in which a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi was fingered in a Panama Paper as one of Nigerian leaders who allegedly laundered money overseas using the offshore shell.

The group says the report is not only misleading but a sponsored campaign to smear the character of Obi whom it says not only maintained a high integrity standard in his years of public service but has remained an epitome of uprightness and diligence in management of public funds.

In a release on Tuesday signed by YNR Director of Publicity, Lawal Olabode, the group insists that the publication betrays public trust which journalism stands for and smacks of unprofessionalism, adding that it is a handiwork of elements who are jittery of the enviable political profile of the former governor which he solely gained through dedication, honesty, and integrity in service of his people and the country at large.

“This concocted falsehood against the person of Peter Obi, the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP in 2019 election did not come to us as a surprise. It highlights the desperation of people who have refused to provide leadership to Nigerians to clutch unto anything, including straw to save their face.

“It is sad however that an otherwise respected newspaper, Premium Times has made itself a willing tool to tarnish the image of a man who has held his head high as one of those who redefined pragmatic management of public resources while in office.

“One wonders if the government of Anambra State has at any point in time raised concern about the mismanagement of its resources under the leadership of Peter Obi as governor.

“Panama Paper which Premium Times cited in the ill-advised report replicates an open advert of neo-colonialism where we rely on falsehood manufactured overseas to smear the character of those who have given their all in service of their fatherland.

“It is equally important to state that the former governor will not stop to speak up against the leadership locust our country is deeply mired into. Our people are living in tension and fear on the ground of failure of leadership. Poverty, hunger and disease bites harder.

“The economy is in shamble. The government of the day borrows with impunity and keeps mortgaging the future of unborn Nigerians. These are germane issues Mr. Obi has continued and will continue to speak against.

“What they have refused to achieve with evidence, they have resorted to whipping up sentiments just to pitch Nigerians against a brilliant public servant who personifies prudence. We dare ask, why has the EFCC, ICPC, and other anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria not unearthed any trace of financial underhand dealings against Obi nearly a decade since he left office?

“Like a pack of cards, this mendacious falsehood will not only collapse but the sponsors will be put to shame. Our people are wiser and know who the guzzlers of our nation’s treasures are” the group said.

It, therefore, called on well-meaning Nigerians to remained focused for a new Nigeria that will usher in progress, unity and prosperity and end the era of depravity they have been subjected under the current leadership.

Kaduna Water Corporation Sacks 286 Workers

Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC) has confirmed the dismissal of 286 staff, following a recent head-count and certificate verification.

Mr Sanusi Maikudi, Managing Director of KADSWAC, confirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kaduna.

He said the corporation dismissed the workers over alleged fake certificates after verifying from the various institutions they claimed to have attended.

“Through the exercise, we were able to identify ghost workers, over-aged workers, people who were too sick to work, and those who were illegally recruited.

“A sizeable number indicated fake certificates which is a criminal offence, as such we have fired them,” Maikudi said.

He added that the exercise unearthed cases of fraud, abuse of trust, bribery, corruption and misappropriation of funds by members of staff.

“They were meant to pass through disciplinary procedure and if found innocent, were exempted while those found guilty were punished according to the gravity of their offences.

“Those with lower qualifications, fake results, cases of gross financial misappropriation, breach of public service rules had their services terminated while some were retired,” he said.

Maikudi said the move became necessary considering the importance of water and sanitation to the public.

“Water corporation is very important and a key driver in water supply and sanitation.

“The state government has spent a lot of money to develop the sector, what is required are highly qualified and properly motivated staff to operate the water sector for the benefit of every stakeholder.

“Our major duty is to safeguard public health and prevent people from diseases because over three quarters of sicknesses are water borne or water related,” he said.

On manpower, Maikudi said the corporation, after the Zaria Water Supply Expansion and Sanitation Project, employed 50 security men, seven technical staffers and five others at the commercial directorate.

Nigerian soul singer, Olawale Ibrahim Ashimi, stage name “Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ” and popularly known as Brymo has alleged that Innocent Ujah Idibia stage name “2Baba” accused him of sleeping with his wife.

In a tweet thread Monday night, Brymo said; “In the very recent past, a man falsely accused me of sleeping with his wife.. and I’ve waited in angst, and the words were never taken back still, efforts were consistently made to prove I did it still.. and my soul has known no lasting peace ever since…

“Mr Innocent Idibia had, at an AFRIMA press conference in 2015/16 or thereabout, walked into the room, sat beside me and elbowed me in a supposed greeting, as much as 4-5 times, repeatedly, while looking away, saying “BrymO, BrymO…..” and we exchanged no other words that day!.

“Now, in 2012 I had the opportunity to tour the US with his company… a most appreciated opportunity, as he was by far my most respected act around… he was my first reference at everything, and boy! Did I look up to him!!!..

“Fast forward to a few years ago, he approached for a feature.. specifically asking me to get on a track with him.. I was initially reluctant to consider it, because I still didn’t know why he did what he did at the press conference years before.. well, I got persuaded to meet!!

“I had, the week before or so shared the company of his wife, a female friend of theirs and my partner’s, and my partner herself.. and within minutes she, Mrs Idibia had asked what the future held for my career.. a question I considered a sleek attack. My answer was my future!!

“I proceeded to responded that I’ll be Africa’s finest act alive, and that I’ll reign for a decade .. and I knew I had shot back nicely!!..

“Next meet had Mr Idibia himself present, and he made a point of referencing another artiste, who in the past had claimed king at his expense. Letting me know what my fate might be if I kept eyeing “his Throne” .. weeks later I saw the other act bowing to him repeatedly on stage!

“Weeks later I was lured into being hosted by a friend I had just met.. and after spending days getting high and philandering, I was asked if I would love to be a part of an organization, of which I responded “well, I might want to, except I do not subscribe to being battered”

“Minutes later my host said he was walking down to another guest house, where some guy has messed up and must be punished.. told me to come but didn’t wait for me.. well, I was the guy it turned out .. when I arrived at the gate on the street, I was asked to show id.

“I tried to, truly, forcefully open the gate, stating that I was a guest of the hotel and didn’t need id.. four boys bursted through the gates and launched an offense at me.. I fought back to f course.. got a black eye too!!

“Later I found out from an undisclosed source that Mr Idibia was responsible for the attack .. yet I couldn’t decide if it was for supposedly bedding his Mrs or for claiming the spot of the greatest artiste alive!!.

“I would later ask him directly of course.. and he denied flat.. then minutes later said, as the source also mentioned .. that some ppl said I was saying things about him, and finished by saying ppl just talk .. !!!.. and that the boys who attacked me called him “egbon”..

“on that meet with him, my partner had asked me a question I had lied about before, and I had confessed about the girl..and when asked about still seeing his baby mama, he said he wasn’t seeing her anymore.. and the wife stormed off not believing it..”na brymo fault” he said.

“Up until a few weeks ago, I have found myself being forcefully shoved to take on his life’s image.. to make his mistakes and experience his pains..Mr Idibia has truly gone and tinkered with my life for months .. upon months ..

“It may be prudent of him, to desist from interactions with things and ppl that are close to me, in my domestic spaces, and in the field of survival.. I have carried these emotions for many months, and I won’t rush to this for publicity .. it is not funny .. this is madness!!”.

JOHESU Suspends Planned Strike

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have suspended their threat to shut down healthcare services in the country.

This was made known by the JOHESU acting general national secretary (Matthew Ajorutu) in a communique issued on behalf of the association on Tuesday.

The unions had earlier threatened to disrupt normal services in hospitals and other healthcare facilities across the country over the federal government’s inability to meet their demands.

The union on September 2 had given the federal government a 15-day ultimatum to address its demands.

Following the expiration of the ultimatum on September 17, the union issued another 15-day ultimatum to the federal government.

Ajorutu said the decision was reached at the end of an emergency meeting of the union’s expanded national executive council(NEC) meeting held on Monday, in Abuja.

He said the decision to put the planned strike on hold was taken in the interest of giving the federal government enough time to meet their demands.

“The leadership of JOHESU reasoned that it was necessary to give the Federal Government a conducive environment to present an update on developments with regards to the major demands of JOHESU,” the communique reads.

“This, especially in the area of adjustment of CONHESS as it was done with CONMESS while also showing evidence-based data of the circularization of the redress of all highlighted service delivery challenges peculiar to members of JOHESU.

NAFDAC Warns Against Consuming Frozen Chicken, Turkey

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned Nigerians against consuming frozen poultry products and other food items preserved with formalin.

NAFDAC’s spokesman, Dr Abubakar Jimoh, gave the word of advice in an interview with newsmen.

Jimoh noted that unscrupulous business owners had been using formalin to preserve poultry products, chicken and turkey, in particular.

”Formalin is capable of preserving such products for weeks before they get to consumers.

“NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians to this practice. There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, despite Federal Government’s ban,” he said.

He further warned consumers patronizing business owners who smuggle poultry products into the country, adding that if such patronage continued, indigenous poultry farmers and marketers would not grow.
