Nnamdi Kanu: Why Senator Abaribe Should Be In Prison – Femi Adesina

0

Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity has lashed out at Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senator representing Abia-South Senatorial District of Abia State for ‘exacerbating the security challenges’ Nigeria is currently faced with.

In a post titled: WEIGHTY MATTERS ABOUT OUR COUNTRY, published on his known Facebook page on Thursday night, Adesina berated Abaribe, saying the senate minority leader should be cooling off in jail.

Some people incite violence through words or actions, thus exacerbating the security challenges we have. You wonder where they are from, and why they would further stoke a burning fire with incendiary materials,” Adesina wrote.

“There is one funny Senator who talks about the mismanagement of our diversity as a country, yet he daily uses foul language against those in leadership. He stood surety for someone bent on dismemberment of the country, and when that one vanished, and he should have been cooling his feet in prison, the Senator still spews rubbish. Chief ‘mismanager’ of our diversity. And the President had words for him and his ilk, who exist round the country: ‘We are ready to arrest and prosecute all persons inciting violence through words or action. Our resolve for a peaceful, united and one Nigeria remains resolute and unwavering. The seeds of violence are planted in people’s heads through words. Reckless utterances of a few have led to losses of many innocent lives and destruction of properties.’”

ABN TV reports that Abaribe stood as surety for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who jumped bail some few years back.

Kanu was granted bail in April 2017 after 18 months in detention, but he fled Nigeria later that year after soldiers invaded his residence in Abia state during a military clampdown on IPOB members.

He was, however, re-arrested in June and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for a treasonable felony.

The IPOB leader has since been remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) pending the continuation of his trial.

We Wanted Messi To Play For Us For Free – Barcelona President, Joan Laporta

0

Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has once again spoken out about Lionel Messi’s exit from the club, saying he had hoped that the captain would offer to play for the Catalan giants for free.

The club could not afford to keep hold of Messi amid their unprecedented financial woes, with the club racking up more than £1billion in debt and recording a £409million loss for last season.

Earlier in the summer, the club president explained that Barcelona’s wage bill with six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi on the books would equal 110 per cent of their income.

As a result, the Argentina star bid an emotional farewell in a press conference before signing for the Ligue 1 giants, PSG in the summer on a two-year deal.

Speaking on Catalan radio station RAC1 via Mundo Deportivo, Laporta, 59, said he had hope the 34-year-old would at the last minute agree to play for free and extend his 21-year stay, but he ultimately acknowledged a player ‘of his level’ could not do so, after PSG presented a ‘very powerful’ offer.

“With Messi I do not get angry because I appreciate him. But when we see that he could not stay there is a certain disappointment on both sides. I know they had a huge desire to stay, but a lot of pressure because of the offer they had.

“Everything indicates that he already had the offer from PSG. Everyone knew that he had a very powerful offer. We knew that from Messi’s side they had a very good offer.

“I did hope that at the last minute Messi would say he would play for free. I would have liked that and he would have convinced me. I understand that the League would have accepted it. But we cannot ask that of a player of his level.

“I thought it because I know him, he went up to the first team when I was there, I helped his family a lot. He knew that when we our economic situation recovered he would be reciprocated.”

FG Backs AGF On Possibility Of Declaring State Of Emergency In Anambra

0

The Federal Government has expressed support for the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on the possibility of declaring state of emergency in Anambra if the incessant killings and other criminal acts in the state persist.

Malami, also the Attorney General of the Federation, had given the indication on Wednesday that the Federal Government would not rule out the option of declaring a state of emergency in Anambra given the violence in the state ahead of the Nov. 6 governorship poll in the state.

Speaking with the NAN on Thursday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Malami’s position was to avert constitutional crisis in the state.

Mohammed said no government would fold its arms and allow the pillar of democracy to be destroyed.

“In the last couple of weeks, IPOB had imposed sit-at-home on the citizens, they did not allow people to go to schools, markets and there are also high profile killings.

“The AGF said yesterday that government will do whatever it takes to restore law and order in Anambra and the entire South East to ensure that symbols and pillars of democracy are not tampered with.

“The forthcoming election in the state is one of the pillars of democracy

“Those who are criticising the AGF on this, have they thought for one minute what will happen if election does not take place in Anambra State on Nov. 6?

“They should bear in mind that under our constitution, a governor cannot spend an extra day beyond the mandate of four years.

“What will happen will be constitutional crisis of immense proportion,’’ he said

The minister recalled that during previous democratic dispensations, a state of emergency was declared in Ekiti and Plateau States.

He said what was happening in Anambra presently was worse than what happened in Plateau and Ekiti when state of emergency was declared.

On the position of some critics that government did not declare state of emergency in Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna where they alleged there were more killings, the minister said the situation was not the same with Anambra

“You do not compare apples with oranges, the bandits in Katsina do not want to leave Nigeria.

“They do not want to declare their own republic and they are not saying there will be no elections. They are primarily criminals.

“It is a disingenuous argument to say that they have killed more people in Katsina, Zamfara and Kaduna than they killed in Anambra.

“What is happening in Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Niger is criminality and government will not condone it.

“I have not seen the bandits hoist any flag anywhere as opposed to Boko Haram.

“Until they were dislodged in Bama they set up their own government, collecting taxes,’’ he said.

The minister added that if there is any need to declare state of emergency in Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna States, the government would not hesitate to do so.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has begun its second-quarter Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) within Enugu State.

The commission called on stakeholders to intensify mobilization for the success of the registration.

Dr Emeka Ononamadu, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, announced this on Thursday at a news conference in Enugu.

He also said that the exercise, which would run till December 2021, would have the online pre-registration component to be continued along with the physical registration.

“It is imperative to bring to the knowledge of prospective registrants and stakeholders that INEC has opened its doors to continue with the registration of eligible voters in Enugu State.

“Stakeholders are encouraged to ensure that all eligible persons who have turned 18 years and have not registered before should go and register in each of our offices in the 17 local governments areas of the state and INEC state office in Enugu.

“Apply for replacement of misplaced or lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“Transfer from one polling booth to another either within the state, LGA or Ward.

“Correct wrong data in their previous registration and collect their permanent voters’ card which they were unable to collect during the registration,” he said.

He said that it was imperative to note that “to register as a voter is a necessary civic responsibility for all citizens”.

Ononamadu noted that the first quarter of the CVR saw low participation and a closing population surge.

“We appeal to stakeholders to reverse the trend to have more registrants at the beginning to avoid rush at the end.

“We encourage stakeholders to support the success of the CVR through intensive and collaborative mobilization of eligible persons.

“We are also calling on stakeholders to continue to support the security of our men and equipment as they have done during the first quarter,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the CVR registration starts from 8 a.m. and ends by 3 p.m. each work day.

NAN recalls that INEC registered 12,832 new eligible voters in its just-concluded first quarter CVR in Enugu State.

During the first quarter exercise, 1,721 transfers and updates were made, 658 residents applied for replacement of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) while 945 voter transfers were made.

A total of 776 corrections were made and a total of 3,294 photo and fingerprints were uploaded and updated; while the commission completed a successful registration activities display period for electorate concerned to make claims and objections.

Fury Promises To Knockout Wilder In Trilogy Fight

0

Tyson Fury has vowed to knockout Deontay Wilder when the two meet for the third time on Saturday in Las Vegas with the Briton’s WBC heavyweight title on the line.

The undefeated Fury (30-0-1), who battled Wilder (42-1-1) to a draw in 2018 before taking the belt from the American 20 months ago, was the aggressor in Wednesday’s news conference, repeatedly berating the former champion.

“You’re a weak man and you’re getting knocked out,” said Fury at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

“Your legacy will be in tatters. Torn to bits. Finished,” he added during a particularly heated back-and-forth near the end of the event, which led organizers to call off a planned face-off for the cameras.

Fury was  bothered by Wilder’s claims that the “Gypsy King” cheated in their last meeting by illegally tampering with his gloves ahead of the seventh-round stoppage.

Saturday’s fight was scheduled for July 24 before Fury’s positive COVID-19 test forced a postponement.

Wilder, sporting a blood red track suit with the words “Eye for an eye” written on it in Russian, appeared more relaxed, saying he had “nothing to lose and everything to gain” in the fight.

“I’m in a great place, a great state of mind,” Wilder said.

“There’s nothing to prove at all. This right here in redemption, retaliation and retribution.”

Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott said the two have been working to expand the knockout artist’s toolbox while Fury’s trainer Sugar Hill Steward said their focus has been on fine-tuning the “already exceptional” Fury.

The winner is expected to face Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the other three titles, for a chance to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lenox Lewis 21 years ago.

And I said, ‘but that wasn’t the arrangement because I kept my mum in the hospital and was expecting that you’ll lay your hand on her and she’ll get better, but they said ‘no you must come to church.’

“Then my sister forced me and we went to church downstairs. I was there when the whole stuff of touching people started, I found it a little laughable seriously because this is national TV and people watch from all corners. I can remember my sister pinched me and said, ‘you’ve got to stop.’
