Anambra Guber: Police Committed To Securing Electoral Processes – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, has assured of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, to securing electoral processes, protection of personnel, critical national infrastructure and materials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the November 6, 2021, governorship election in Anambra State.

Baba gave the assurance during a strategic meeting with Commanders of Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadrons on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CP Frank Mba.

He said the meeting was part of efforts to specifically contain the activities of criminal elements in the south-east and particularly guarantee a safe and secure environment for the elections.

The statement read in part, “The IGP further stated that the leadership of the Force has commenced the reorganization, re-equipping, training and re-orientation of the PMF with the goal of strengthening its operational capacity and re-situating the unit to accomplish the task of confronting violent crimes in the country.

“The IGP charged the Squadron Commanders to upscale their supervisory roles to ensure their personnel demonstrate a high level of professionalism, firmness, courage and respect for human rights while carrying out their duties.

“The IGP noted that the Nigeria Police Force in the coming days will be implementing a robust national security action plan to refocus the internal security dynamics of the country in addition to securing the electoral processes in the Anambra state governorship election, including the protection of personnel and materials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and critical national infrastructure.”

The statement added, “The IGP noted that the Police Mobile Force, will, as usual, form a critical component of the operational plan, to deter any subversive elements that could threaten or disrupt the smooth conduct of the election.

“The IGP reiterated that the Force will continue to do all within its powers to combat all forms of criminality and violent crimes including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and violent extremism, amongst others, across the country.”

Supreme Court Affirms Charles Soludo As APGA’s Governorship Candidate, Oye As National Chairman

After over two hours of fierce legal fireworks by lawyers, the Supreme Court on Thursday in Abuja affirmed former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, on November 6, 2021, election in Anambra State.

The apex court also returned Chief Victor Oye as the National Chairman of the party.

In a judgment of a five-man panel of justices of the court, the appeal filed by one Jude Okeke was dismissed on the ground of being an abuse of the court process.

Justice Mary Peter Odili, who delivered the lead judgment, awarded a sum of N1 million to be paid by Jude Okeke to APGA and Victor Oye.

Justice Odili upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Kano Division, which had earlier dismissed Okeke’s suit.

Compensate South-East For Civil War Losses – Gov Uzodinma Tells FG

The governor of Imo state, Hope Uzodimma, has requested that the federal government create a special fund to recompense the south-east for the loss of lives and property during the civil war.

Uzodinma said the special fund would provide assistance to people who lost their properties and family members during the civil war when he declared open a zonal public hearing on the review of the revenue allocation sharing formula on Wednesday, October 13 in Owerri, Imo state capital.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission hosted the event (RMAFC).
He stated,

“I think the debacles of the civil war led the south-east into a deep poverty level; houses were burnt down, people were killed,” Uzodinma said.

“Only recently, a special law was enacted as the North-East Development Commission, arising from the disaster of Boko Haram incidents. But the 30-month civil war that ended in 1970 left the south-east in a state of penury.”

The governor said the south-east has suffered “great injustice” on how revenues accruing from the zone are shared.

“Today, as it stands, the federal government takes home 52.68 per cent, state governments, 26.72 per cent, while the 774 local government areas take home 20.60 per cent,” he said.

He said Imo currently has seven oil-producing companies but 43 oil wells were “wrongfully” allocated to Rivers.

According to Uzodinma, 25 percent of Bonny’s gas output is piped from Imo, but the revenue does not go to the state, “while pollution threatens the lives and assets of the residents of the area.”

“It should not just be about multi-billion-dollar pipeline projects that siphon oil and gas from the state which results to youth restiveness, quantum violence and subsequent deaths,” the governor said.

“I think that God did not make mistake endowing Imo with natural resources.”

Three Kidnapped Seminarians Regain Freedom In Kaduna

Barely 48 hours after their abduction, the three Kidnapped Seminarians from Christ the King Major Seminary in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, on Wednesday, regained their freedom from their abductors.

The Chancellor, Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, Reverend Father Emmanuel Uchechukwu Okolo, confirmed their release on Wednesday night.

Bandits on Monday night, attacked seven seminarians at the school chapel. They succeeded in kidnapping three, while others escaped.

According to him, “with hearts filled with joy, we raise our voices in a symphony of praises as we announce the return of our Three Major Seminarians, who were abducted by armed persons from the Chapel of the Seminary at Christ the King Major Seminary, Fayit Fadan Kagoma in Jema’a Local Government Area, Kaduna State, on Monday 11 October, 2021.”

He said, barely 48 hours after their kidnap, the beloved three brothers were released by their abductors.

“We want to thank all those that have offered prayers and entreaties for the quick release of our Seminarians and others who are still in the dens of their kidnappers. We pray God to hasten the release of those who are still in the hands of their captors.

“All our priests are directed to kindly celebrate Mass of Thanksgiving to God tomorrow, Thursday, 14th October 2021, for the quick and safe release of our Seminarians.

“May Our Lady of Guadalupe intercede for us and all those that are still in captivity!” he said.

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has admitted he had to sign for Chelsea in 2006, because the futures of three other Nigerian players were tied to the deal.

Mikel spent 11 trophy-laden years at Stamford Bridge after signing from Norwegian club, Lyn Oslo.

However, the transfer was enmeshed in controversy, as he had initially signed for Manchester United.

Mikel Obi then claimed he was forced to put pen to paper for the Red Devils.

This led to a legal battle between Lyn Oslo, Man Utd and Chelsea, while FIFA also intervened.

At the end, Mikel Obi eventually signed for Chelsea, who paid a compensation fee of £12m to Manchester United and £4m to Lyn.

During that period, three of Mikel Obi’s teammates at U-20 level, Chinedu Obasi, Emmanuel Sarki and Ezekiel Bala, were also undergoing trials at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel Obi told The Athletic: “When I chose Chelsea, it wasn’t just my life that changed.

“There were four lives that changed. Why? Because if I didn’t, Chelsea might not have anything to do with my three friends. I was close to them. I knew their families.

“I didn’t just make the decision for myself. I thought about them, I thought about their families. This gave them more of a chance.”

Former AC Milan striker Beppe Incocciati has described Super Eagles star, Victor Osimhen as a quality goal scorer and goal creator for Napoli.

Incocciati stated this in a chat with TuttoNapoli, where he praised the Nigerian international impressive goal scoring form for Napoli in the Serie A this ongoing season.

He said Osimhen has the speed, physical abilities and height to cause more harm for defenders in the league.

A renowned Interpol Systems Consultant in Nigeria, Sir Chikwe Udensi has said if the next President of Nigeria emerges from the South East region, it will end the secessionist agitation spearheaded by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB in the geopolitical zone.

According to Udensi, history has shown that similar challenges in recent times in the country were tackled by a deliberate effort to instill a sense of justice.

Speaking with ABN TV in Abuja, he said when OPC was running riots in the South West, leading to tension and killings in the region, it fizzled away when Olusegun Obasanjo became President of the country.

“The next thing you saw was Niger Delta agitation as if the country was about to be engulfed in flames.

“Goodluck Jonathan went in there, there has not been anything like Niger Delta agitation again. People like Tompolo, Asari Dokubo, and the rest went in.

“This agitation (IPOB) will die off if Igbo man becomes the President. That is my thinking because that has been the trend” he stated.

He insists that agitation is fuelled by a perceived sense of injustice, adding that injustice and peace do not co-habit.

“When you make an Igbo man President, IPOB and ESN will die off. That is the truth. It has happened before in this country” he added.

On the possibility of an Igbo man being the country’s President in 2023, Sir Udensi said nothing is impossible before God.

He noted that it was nearly unbelievable for one to assume that Obasanjo would become the President in 1999 from the prison, same as Goodluck Jonathan who was a deputy governor in Bayelsa before his miraculous elevation to the number office on the land.

He predicted that an Igbo man could miraculously emerge as the country’s President come 2023.

After Absenting From Court, Judge Slams Fani-Kayode N200,000 Fine

Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court, Lagos has slammed a N200,000 fine on a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, for not showing up in court to take a new plea in the alleged N4.6 billion fraud against him.

Fani-Kayode is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman and one Danjuma Yusuf, a former Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), and a company, Jointrust Dimensions Nigeria Limited.

The trial first started in 2016 before Justice Sule Muslim Hassan, now a justice of the Court of Appeal, before the case file was transferred to Justice Rilwan Aikawa, who has also been transferred to another court.

But, Fani-Kayode failed to appear before the new trial judge, Justice Osiagor yesterday.

The prosecutor, Mrs Bilikisu Buhari, therefore, urged the court to revoke his bail.

However, Fani-Kayode’s counsel, F. B. Ajudua, pleaded with the court not to revoke his bail, saying that a letter had been written on behalf of his client that he was at Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja receiving medical attention.

But, the trial judge upon perusing the court’s records, discovered that Fani-Kayode had been absent from court for five times, the development the judge noted had stalled the smooth hearing of the case.

Justice Osiagor, therefore, gave two options of either to revoke his bail or a fine of N200, 000, 00 whereas his counsel opted for a fine.

The judge said the fine must be paid before the next adjourned date, November 30.

You Must Take COVID-19 Vaccine Before Dec. 1, FG Tells Civil Servants

The Federal Government has set a deadline of December 1 for civil servants to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, announced this at a briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.

“With effect from 1st December 2021, Federal Government employees shall be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result done within 72 hours to gain access to their offices in all locations within Nigeria and our Missions.

“An appropriate service-wide advisory/circular will be issued to guide the process,” the SGF said.

He also revealed that the government has removed South Africa, Brazil, and Turkey from the list of countries where travellers have been restricted from coming into Nigeria as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mustapha explained that the government took the decision to lift the ban following an emergency meeting held before the briefing.

He also commended the United Kingdom for reviewing its travel protocols which allowed fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria to enter the country without having to self-isolate after their arrival.

“Over several months, four countries were placed on high-level restriction for travellers from such countries,” the SGF said. “The PSC has after a review of the developments in these countries, decided to remove South Africa, Turkey, and Brazil from the restricted list.

“As you are aware, the UK has eased restrictions on fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria to the UK with effect from 11th October. Nigeria welcomes this development and assures that the PSC shall continue to review Nigeria’s protocols based on global developments, science, and national experience. A revised protocol will be issued in the next 24 hours.”

He alerted Nigerians on the forthcoming two major religious festivities – Salah and Christmas, noting that there would be increased passenger traffic in and out of the country Similarly and possibly events of large gatherings.

Mustapha, who said the PSC would escalate surveillance and other control activities, urged the states and all Nigerians to increase their vigilance.

REMARKS OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PRESIDENTIAL STEERING COMMITTEE ON COVID -19 AT THE NATIONAL BRIEFING ON WEDNESDAY 13TH OCTOBER, 2021

I welcome you to the National briefing of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 for the 13th October 2021. Today’s briefing, coming after an emergency meeting, will update Nigerians on some key developments.

2. The briefing today will therefore be focusing on updates from the NCDC, Countries on the restriction list, our relationship with the UAE on Emirates and the vaccines mandate.

3. Statistics generated over the last four weeks on testing have shown that the trend of infection is going down in some states while in others, the trajectory is upward. The combined total for testing by PCR and RDT now stands at about 3.141, 795 million persons.

4. The aviation authorities in collaboration with the diplomatic sector have made reasonable progress in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Discussions are still ongoing with the UAE authorities to resolve the impasse.

The Hon Minister of Aviation today, presented the position of African countries on Vaccine Passport which some economic blocks and countries wish to impose, for travel purposes. This is because African countries have found it difficult to access the vaccines for their citizens in sufficient numbers.

7. While the PSC prepares to escalate surveillance and other control activities, we urge the States and all Nigerians to also increase their vigilance and take measures to moderate activities.

FCT Minister Tells Court That Yar’Adua’s Daughter, Zainab, Forged Abuja Land Documents

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, has told an Abuja High Court that Zainab, the daughter of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, forged several documents to lay claim to a disputed plot of land in Abuja.

The minister alleged, yesterday, that there was nothing to show that the former President’s daughter ever applied for land in the FCT or made any payment to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to enable her own any land in Abuja.

In a joint statement of defence to a legal action instituted by Zainab on the ownership of Plot 506, Zone B 09, Kado District, Abuja, the minister and the FCDA, who are 3rd and 4th defendants in the suit, denied ever allocating any land to the plaintiff.

The statement dated September 21, 2021 and filed on their behalf by their lawyer, Yakubu Abubakar, informed the court that Zainab claimed ownership of the plot of the Abuja land through a power of attorney, which the donor, one Haliru Malami, later disowned as seller.

The former first daughter, through her company, Marumza Estate Development Company Limited, had dragged Itban Global Resources Limited, Haliru Malami, FCT minister and FCDA before a High Court of the FCT laying claim to the land, purporting to have purchased it from the FCDA through Itban and Malami.

However, in their statement of defence, the 3rd and 4th respondents averred that before filing the court case, Zainab had allegedly given conflicting accounts of how the land was purportedly acquired through a former Minister of the FCT as well as acquisition by way of purchase from the 1st defendant.

They stated that the 1st defendant, who allegedly sold the land, issued a letter on March 4, 2021, denying ever selling the land and issuing power of attorney to the plaintiff.

They, therefore, asked the court to dismiss the case with cost on the plaintiff because she is not entitled to any claim in the originating summons.

At yesterday’s proceedings, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi granted permission to the plaintiff to amend her statement of claim and subsequently fixed December 15 and 16 for a definite hearing of the matter.
