The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said on Thursday the state was two-and-a-half times bigger than all the five states in the South-East.

The governor, who stated this at the inaugural edition of the Fountain Summit organised by the Ekiti State government in Ado-Ekiti, expressed fear that the Boko Haram insurgents would relocate to the North-West.

He called for the cooperation of Nigerians in the fight against insecurity in the country.

The governor said: “We have security challenges, but our investors know where their assets are and they know that those assets are safe and we’ve never seen the headlines of security affecting our inflow of investments.

“But we must work on improving security or more than that, we must stop this ‘us versus them’ mentality and collaborate more closely.

“Remember once upon a time, Boko Haram was only in North-East. Now, the biggest fear we have in the North-West is that they are relocating to the region because they are being chased out from the North-East by ISWAP.

“When they are chased out of the North-West, where do you think they will come? Somewhere else. It is something we should all be concerned about; not only federal and state collaboration but also across the country.

“Don’t see what is happening in Kaduna and say it is not my problem. It will be your problem one day, unless it is solved.

“There is a major difference between security in headlines and security in facts. Kaduna State has 46,000 square kilometres of land.

“I joke with my South-East governor friends that the whole of five states of the South-East can fit into Kaduna State, two-and-a-half times.

“This is the size of the state. We are smaller than Niger and Borno States. To cover that kind of area with 11,000 policemen is almost impossible.

“So there are many ungovernable spaces in our state. But you see, when an incident occurs in one part of the state, remotely connected with what is happening in Kaduna or Zaria or in the metropolitan centres, people think the entire Kaduna State is unsafe.

“It is not true. Kaduna is not Lagos. One local government area in Kaduna — Birnin Gwari local government area — is three times the size of Lagos State. So, when something happens in Ikeja, it doesn’t mean that Epe is affected. It is the same thing, but even larger in Kaduna State.”

The Peoples Democratic Party has extended by two days the sale of nomination forms for national officers for the October 30 and 31 National Convention.

The PDP disclosed this in a statement in Abuja by Kola Ologbondiyan, the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

Ologbondiyan, who is also the Secretary, National Convention Publicity Sub-Committee, said the closing date, earlier fixed for October 15, is now October 17.

The party added that consequently, the last date for the submission of duly completed forms has also been extended from October 16 to October 19.

Ologbondiyan said: “Accordingly, the date for the Screening of aspirants for various national offices has also been adjusted to Wednesday, October 20, while screening appeals, to consider appeals arising from the screening exercise, is now scheduled for Saturday, October 23.”

It noted that the date for the National convention still remains October 30 to 31.

It advised all aspirants, leaders, critical stakeholders and teeming members of the party to be guided accordingly by the statement.

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said that its plan for Fifth Generation technology deployment in the country has continued to gather momentum.

The NCC thus confirmed that its readiness to begin the full deployment of the 5G technology was at 97 per cent.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, re-affirmed the status of the Commission’s 5G technology deployment at the annual African Tech Alliance Forum held in Lagos, with the theme: “Embracing Changes and Digital Transformation in the New Normal.”

Focusing his presentation on: “NCC as a Digital Transformation Crusader and Nigeria’s in-Road to 5G Deployment,” Danbatta stated that following the advent of COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a change in the dynamics of people’s interaction, especially on the Internet.

According to him, almost every means of communication has become virtual in one way or the other.

Danbatta, who was represented by Engr. Oluwatoyin Asaju, Director, Spectrum Administration, however, stated that this paradigm shift in communication has led to significant increase in network connectivity requirements as a result of unprecedented upsurge in Internet traffic, occasioned by the use of a plethora of web applications such as Zoom, Microsoft teams, WebEx, Goto, Webinar and so on.

He said this has made remote work, virtual meetings, virtual studies and virtual healthcare delivery, among others, the new normal.

According to him, though the network infrastructure in Nigeria has demonstrated some capacity to contain the surge in internet traffic, a lot of work is being done by the Commission to boost network capacity, sensitise the public and ensure accessibility to affordable connectivity during the period of the pandemic and beyond.

Due to the network traffic demand, Danbatta said the NCC was working with operators to implement a number of initiatives to ensure network expansion.

These, he said, included ongoing plan to auction spectrum in 3.5 gigahertz band to operators for the deployment of 5G network in Nigeria.

He added: “Consistent with our mandate as enshrined in the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 (NCA-2003) and other guiding legislations, we have been working to ensure the penetration of broadband services in line with Federal Government’s targets, as contained in Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP), 2020 to 2025.

“Already, we are set for the auction some spectrum slots in 3.5GHz band. The other day I was at the National assembly, I informed the senate that we were 95 per cent ready for 5G. Today as we speak, I am delighted to tell you that we are already at 97 per cent completion.

“The Committee set up to auction the Spectrum has already developed an Information Memorandum (IM) which is already published for inputs and comments from all industry stakeholders. Prior to this, a 5G deployment plan was developed and we have since secured Federal Government’s approval.”

Danbatta said this was in addition to a lot of other initiatives being put in place by the Commission to improve broadband connectivity in Nigeria, adding that the surge in Internet traffic induced by COVID-19 has continued to challenge National Regulatory Authorities and other arms of governments to ensure deployment of adequate resources such as spectrum and other forms of support to increase network resilience and accessibility to telecommunication services.

He said: “Emerging technologies such as 5G, which NCC is driving aggressively in Nigeria, Internet of Things; Cloud Computing; Quantum Computing Augmented/Virtual Reality, and similar emerging technologies are playing a critical role in improving remote communication over the internet with great user experience.

“The NCC is committed to promoting this inevitable change and enhance user experience through effective regulation of the telecoms sector.”
