0

Three Guests were reportedly shot dead at a wedding reception were music was played in Eastern Afghanistan on Friday night.

The Taliban Spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, disclosed this at a press conference on Sunday.

He said the attack was carried out by three assailants who claimed to be members of the Taliban.

According to Mujahid, the gunmen attacked a reception taking place in the Surkh Rod district of Nangarhar Province.

A local journalist also revealed that at least two people had been killed and 10 others injured.

He added that no one has the right to kill anyone for playing music, and an investigation was underway to establish whether the incident was due to a personal problem.

“In the ranks of the Islamic Emirate no one has the right to turn anyone away from music or anything, only to try to persuade them. That is the main way,” Mujahid told the press conference, according to AFP.

Mujahid, in a series of Twitter posts said that the suspects had claimed to be Taliban members, and had asked for the music to be stopped before opening fire, but did not verify whether or not they were Taliban.

He said two people connected to the incident had been arrested, but a third had escaped.

Although they disapprove of playing music at weddings and other public events, the Taliban has not issued a decree banning it since coming to power in August.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested some lecturers over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB).

They were arrested in a joint operation carried out by the DSS and and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The joint operation tagged ‘Operation Combo’ conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, led to the arrests of lecturers, security officers, workers and students from some of the participating universities in the exam.

Operation Combo was simultaneously carried out in seven states after extensive monitoring of tutorial schools allegedly known for compromising JUPEB examinations.

This also led to the arrest of the President of Tutorial School Owners (ATSO).

According to a statement signed by the ICPC spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, the operation, a consequence of a sustained period of surveillance and undercover investigations spanning several weeks, led to multiple arrests of suspects including parents of candidates of the exam.

The suspects, according to Ogugua, were arrested from Wellspring University, Benin, Edo State; Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun State and Crown-Hill University, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The statement added, “Again the raid of tutorial centres by operatives in McPherson and Precious Cornerstone universities in Ibadan and Ilara-Epe, in Oyo State respectively, led to more arrests of suspects.

“Credible intelligence gathered during the operations showed active connivance of the parents of the students and the management of the universities.”

She explained that at least three current Vice-Chancellors have been invited by ICPC for their roles in the unchecked and massive malpractices reported.

The spokesperson added that it was revealed that syndicated social media platforms were created by the facilitators for leaking questions and circulating answers to students for a fee during examinations.

“Investigation also revealed that candidates, who are mostly minors, allegedly paid between N350,000 to N500,000 each to the suspects in the various tutorial schools to engage in the illegalities.”

“The cartel, in connivance with the coordinators of the examination centres and other management staff of the institutions, deliberately allowed security lapses to enable the candidates go into examination halls with smart-phones and other electronic devices to send question papers to waiting groups online and subsequently, receive answers to questions thereby engaging in massive malpractices.

“Some of the suspects arrested have been granted administrative bail while investigation is on-going.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra has alleged that prison inmates across correctional centres in the South-East geopolitical zone, had been mobilised to Anambra State to vote in the November 6 governorship election on Saturday.

The secessionist group observed that there was a grand plot to rob the people of Anambra State their rights to choose a leader of their choice, in the gubernatorial poll.

The Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, stated this in a statement he personally signed, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent on Wednesday.

The statement read in part, “The global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has through intelligence, gathered that the Nigerian Government and the All Progressives Congress, APC, have gone to several correctional centers in the South-East zone and lifted inmates and Fulani youths living in other South-East States to Anambra State, with the intention to use them and thumb-print in favour of the APC, in the forthcoming November 6 governorship election, in the state.”

“We raise the alarm to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, US government; British government; Israeli government; German government; Canadian government; Russian government; Amnesty International; civil society groups in the world and all relevant and reputable human rights organisations to monitor what the APC and the government of Nigeria are doing in Biafra land, especially in Imo and Anambra States.

“We want to raise this alarm to put Ndi Anambra in particular, Ndigbo and the world in general, out of the wicked plot by the APC-led Federal Government of Nigeria to rob them of their rights to choose a leader of their choice. They want to impose another puppet in Anambra State, as they did in Imo State.

“The APC has changed election norms in the history of Nigeria. We want politicians in Anambra State to be wary of what APC is doing to them, so they can resist them.”

Court Adjourns Hearing On Biafra Referendum

0

A High Court in Abuja has adjourned a hearing on a lawsuit by the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) seeking the Organization of a referendum.

CNG had sued the National Assembly, and the Attorney General, asking the court to compel the defendants to halt the ongoing constitutional review exercise and in its place, conduct a referendum to determine what determines Nigeria and who populates it.

The suit was aimed at determining the fate of agitations for Biafra, Yoruba nation, and other secessionist agendas. The case was adjourned till January 20, 2022, after the court before Justice Inyang Ekpo could not sit the same due to official assignment.

Speaking to journalists on Monday after the adjournment, the spokesperson of the CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, noted that the court could not sit and the suit was subsequently adjourned to 20th January, 2022.

CNG said instead of constitutional review, the defendants should immediately provide a framework for the actualization of agitators’ demand on self-determination.

He said, “What we are doing is to save the country, ourselves, and the future of the country because these peoples are becoming violent already. And most of the people engaged in this activity are below 50. So if we allow our leaders of today to go and leave us with these people in this situation, there may be another bloodshed or civil war. That’s what we want to avoid, which is why we come to the court to interpret the situation.”
