Again, Sen. Kalu Urges Ndigbo To Support, Appreciate Buhari For Infrastructure In Region

0

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, has renewed the call for Igbos to work with President Muhammadu Buhari and appreciate him for the infrastructure in the South-East.

Kalu in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja, said that supporting Buhari would attract more federal projects to the region.

The lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District stressed that his zone would give Buhari more votes if given another opportunity.

According to him, it is on record that Abia North Senatorial zone is the only zone in the South-East and South-South that gave Buhari 68 per cent votes in the 2019 general elections.

“If we are given a chance to repeat what we did in 2019, I think the people will do more voting for him.

“From what President Buhari has done in my constituency, the votes might be higher than 68 per cent,’’ Kalu said.

He emphasised that the zone had enjoyed a cordial relationship with the president

“The relationship with Abia North as a constituency is very cordial and the president has shown a lot of love to us and has remembered us with what we voted for, so we are excited.

“Abia North is the senatorial district that gave the president the highest votes both in the South-South and South-East, we are number one and nobody is challenging us.

“So, when people say we don’t like Buhari we are not part of it; we have always been on good terms with him. We gave him a doctorate degree in our university in 2003 (Abia State University) and we gave him a chieftaincy title in Igbere(Orji Kalu’s home town) in 2004.

“So, we have always been on good terms with him and we are also on good terms with other past heads of state like Abudulsalami Abubakar, Ibrahim Babangida, President Shehu Shagari and President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“We are excited to have other people in our area, so Nigerian politicians should remove hatred.

“I encourage the Igbos to work with President Buhari to find a way to make amends and remove sentiments and work with the president so that in the remaining two years he can do more things for us before he leaves office,’’ Kalu said.

After Claiming To Recover N19.3bn From Salary Bail-Out Account, Kogi Govt Accuses EFCC Of Incompetence

0

The Kogi State Government has described as laughable the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s attempt to desperately wriggle out of a bad case with another mischief aimed, again, at misleading Nigerians.

The EFCC on Friday said it has returned the sum of N19,333,333,333 which was allegedly recovered from the Kogi Salary Bailout Account ‘hidden’ in Sterling Bank.

But in a statement titled ‘EFCC’s desperate bid to cover incompetence laughable’, the Commissioner for Information and Communications in Kogi State, Kingsley Fanwo, said the Government would prepare a comprehensive response to the latest of the desperate moves by the Commission to save its face in view of its obvious goof and unethical conduct in the matter in dispute.

“The press statement by the Commission is a malicious attempt to rope the state into a matter that ordinarily has nothing to do with our dear state,” he said.

“We maintain the unassailable truth that the Kogi State Government did not operate such account with the bank as affirmed in a letter by the bank. We sympathize with the EFCC as it has been a herculean task to cover the initial misinformation and deliberate deceit by the Commission,” the statement added.

Fanwo stressed that the Kogi State Government would react to the latest EFCC statement comprehensively, noting that “every option that is legal will be considered to maintain the innocence and transparency of our Government.”

“Kogites and indeed, Nigerians should rest assured that we will get to the root of this matter,” he assured.

Listen To Igbo Leaders And Release Our Son Unconditionally, Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Tell Buhari

0

The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Incarcerated leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has urged President Muhamnadu Buhari to heed pleas by Igbo leaders and release their son.

Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu who spoke with correspondents said that Buhari should consider the request by the eminent Igbo elders as a mark of respect for the Igbo nation.

He said that one of the ways to kick-start the process of national healing is the unconditional release of Kanu.

Prince Emmanuel expressed hope that President Buhari would give urgent attention to the pleas of the elders.

Adding his voice, Kanu’s first cousin, Mr. Chijindu Offor, urged the President not to throw away the passionate appeal by the elders who represent the entire Igbo race.

Offor said that the immediate and unconditional release of Kanu had become necessary because of his deteriorating health. He raised fresh concern over Kanu’s health and safety following the alarm by Kanu’s lawyers on Thursday that he was subjected to “harsh, degrading and inhuman conditions” in detention.

He said that Kanu’s should not be allowed to die in detention or be incapacitated, warning that Nigeria might not be able to contain the aftermath of any such eventualities.

“I appeal to the federal government to listen to the voice of wisdom and allow my cousin, Nnamdi to go home so he can attend to his failing health. “Nigeria may not survive the fallout of anything untoward happening to my cousin. So, why not save the country such needless pains”, he said .

Kogi Govt Lied, We Recovered Hidden N19.3bn From Its Salary Bail-Out Account — EFCC

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has faulted claims by Kogi State government that no fund was recovered from its bail out account, describing it as campaign of misinformation and unconscionable denials.

The anti-graft agency in a press release made available to ABN TV titled, “Hidden N19.3bn Kogi Salary Bail-Out Funds Returned to CBN” and signed by its Head, Media & Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren said the Central Bank of Nigeria has acknowledged receipt of the said fund.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has acknowledged the receipt of the sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 (Nineteen Billion, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Million, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Thousand, Three Hundred and Thirty-three Naira, Thirty-six Kobo) recovered the EFCC from the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account domiciled in Sterling Bank Plc.

“This effectively puts to rest the campaign of misinformation and unconscionable denials by the Kogi State Government that no fund was recovered from its bail out account” EFCC says.

According to the EFCC, the apex bank in a letter referenced, DFD/DIR/CON/EXT/01/099 and dated 9th November, 2021 informed the Executive Chairman, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa that it has received the money.

The letter the commission claims reads in part: “We refer to your letter dated November 5, 2021 with Ref. No: CR:3000/EFCC/LS/CMU/REC-STE/VOL.4/047 on the above subject and wish to confirm the details of the receipt of the amount as stated below: Bank: Sterling Bank Plc; Amount:  N19, 333, 333,333.36; Date of receipt: 04 November, 2021”.

It added, “The return of the money to the apex bank  is in compliance with the October 15, 2021 Order of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi Lagos directing the unfreezing of the Kogi State Salary Bail-out account to enable Sterling Bank to remit the balance in the account to the Central Ban of Nigeria. Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the Order pursuant to an application filed by the EFCC.

“The Commission had told the court that the management of Sterling Bank Plc, where the account was domiciled had acknowledged the existence of the said account with the staggering sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 in its books.

“The Commission further brought to the attention of the court that “The sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 is still standing in the credit of the account frozen”, adding that “the management of Sterling Bank PIc, has, pursuant to a letter dated 15 September, 2021, signed by its Managing Director, indicated intention to return the total sum of N19, 333,333,333.36 back to the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

The EFCC prayed The court that it “is expedient for the instant suit to be discontinued and the account unfrozen to enable the management of Sterling Bank PIc effect the transfer/ return of the sum of the sum of N19, 333, 333, 333.36 back to the coffer of the Central Bank of Nigeria , where the said bailout funds was disbursed.”

“The transfer has put paid to any further controversy regarding source and ownership of the funds and most importantly, aborted the funds dissipation.

“On August 31, 2021, Justice Tijani Garba Ringim, a vacation Judge, had ordered the freezing of the account, following an ex-parte application filed by the EFCC.

“The EFCC, in a 13-paragraph affidavit in support of the ex-parte application, had stated that it received a credible and direct intelligence, which led to the tracing of the funds reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities in account No. 0073572696 domiciled in Sterling Bank, Plc with the name Kogi State Salary Bailout Account.

“After listening to the EFCC application, Justice Ringim on August 31, 2021, ordered the freezing of the account and directed the publication of the order in a national newspaper by the EFCC. ‘

Over 75,000 Sign Petition To Arraign Buhari After #ENDSARS Panel Report

0

A petition by Reno Omokri, a former Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, on the change.org platform has received 76,420 signatures as of 12.39 pm on Friday.

The petition, which was filed on Wednesday, was directed at the International Criminal Court and comes after the Lagos #EndSARS panel indicted the Buhari administration in its report.

At over 75,471 signatures, the petition is the first of Nigerian origin to hit that number in two days.

The petition is titled, ‘A Petition to The International Criminal Court to Arraign Muhammadu Buhari for Crimes Against Humanity.

The petition sought to have Buhari tried and imprisoned by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity believed to have happened at Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020.

This is after the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters say at least nine persons were confirmed dead at the Lekki toll plaza on the night soldiers stormed there to disperse #EndSARS protesters on October 20, 2020.

The Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel made this known in its report submitted to the Lagos State Government on Monday.

In the report, titled, ‘Report Of Lekki Incident Investigation Of 20th October 2020’, a copy of which was sighted by our correspondent, the panel said the atrocious killing of unarmed protesters at Lekki toll gate on the night of October 20, 2020, can be equated to a ‘massacre’ in context.

The panel also indicted the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lekki Concession Company, the police, and the army.

The body of the petition read, “On October 20, 2020, the Buhari administration murdered multiple innocent, unarmed, peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in a massacre that has since been dubbed #LekkiMassacre.

“These youths were protesting to put an end to the rampant police brutality that had become the hallmark of the Buhari regime, which treats so-called repentant Boko Haram almost like royalty, while coming hard on young Nigerians, sometimes for the flimsiest reason, such as wearing dreadlocks.

“Following the murders of these protesters, the Buhari administration denied that the incident ever occurred. They threatened those, like myself, who insisted, with proof, that this massacre happened. The government even threatened to jail people who called for those behind the murders to be brought to book.

“However, on Monday, November 15, 2021, the Lagos state Panel of Inquiry into EndSARS released its report to the state government in which it established judicially that not only did the massacre occur, but that the government of Muhammadu Buhari and its agents, re the Nigerian Army and Police, perpetuated the murders.

“This petition is therefore directed at the International Criminal Court to set machinery in motion for the trial of Muhammadu Buhari for crimes against humanity in the same way that former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, was tried and convicted.”

‘Why we signed the petition’

Some supporters have given reasons why they signed the petition.

One of them, Glory Uzoma, said, “I am signing because president Buhari committed a crime against humanity in respect of the Lekki tollgate massacre.”

Prof. Ifeanyi Ahuchogu: I’m signing because Buhari has no heart/conscience for the life and wellbeing of humanity that he ought to provide for. Let the take its course.

Promise Ogbonna: Justice must be enthroned!

Folashade Sulaimon: I’m signing because innocent lives were lost for fighting a good cause. Families of the deceased have been in agony. Justice must prevail.

MacAnthony Chike: Nigerians as a whole deserve a better government and a good leader and rights as a citizen…. enough is enough.

No Country More Liberal Than Nigeria In Granting Media Access To Information – Lai Mohammed

0

Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, says no other country is as liberal as Nigeria in granting media access to information.

Speaking on Thursday at the ongoing 41st United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) general conference in Paris, Mohammed said fake news and disinformation had reached an alarming rate globally.

The minister said the advent of new media without regulation had aggravated fake news because social media platforms have become the medium of choice for “fake newsagents”.

He called on UNESCO to use its global platform to join in the fight against the spread of fake news.

“UNESCO needs to help governments and the public by placing emphasis on the fight against fake news as much as it could,” he said.

“In addition to the roles of enhancing access to information and protection of journalists, UNESCO should proffer ways to handle fake news.

“The challenge is how to handle the twin evil of fake news and disinformation which have the capacity to cause unrest and destroy the essence of society.

“Nigeria is completely different from how it is being perceived from outside.

“We are yet to see any country that is more liberal than Nigeria in granting access to information by the media, even among the developed countries.

“For 10 years, I was a spokesperson for the opposition and there was never a time I was incarcerated.

“At the moment, we have an extremely tolerant government to the extent that it is the government that is at the mercy of the media in Nigeria.”

He also said there are at least “145 online publications” devoted to “harassing” the Nigerian government and using the platforms as tools to destabilise the country.
