Saraki Storms Benue, Seeks Support Over Presidential Ambition

A former President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday, visited Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State over his ambition to vie for the 2023 Presidential election.

Saraki, after a close door meeting with Governor Ortom, also met with the State Working Committee members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to familiarise them with his intention to kick start consultations for his ambition to rule the country.

He said that the nationwide defection of party loyalists from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP was an indication that there may not be anyone left in the party before the next election.

“A party that cannot organise its affairs has no business leading this country. A party that has organised its affairs is ready in leading this country and that is the PDP,” he said.

Saraki added that the North Central Zone has paid its dues by working so hard in keeping the country together as one united entity just as he pointed out that, “this time we must stand for our own and charity begins at home.”

The ex -senate president, who was accompanied on the visit by former Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, former National Chairman of the PDP, Kawu Baraje, Senator Suleiman Adokwe and Prof Iyorwuese Hagher, Chairman of Council, Saraki for President Campaign, thanked the Benue governor for standing out for the zone.

Earlier, Governor Ortom, eulogised Saraki for being one of those Nigerians that have contributed immensely to the development of democracy.

Ortom said it was time to rescue the country from bottom, a position it was placed by the APC government, to the top, adding that Saraki deserves the presidential seat to enable him salvage the country from its current mess.

On his part, the State Chairman of the PDP, Sir John Ngbede, represented by his deputy, Isaac Mfo, said the party in the state had remained intact even as he assured the presidential hopeful that they would back his ambition to rule the country.

EFCC Quizzes Fani-Kayode Over Forgery

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently interrogating a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

Officials of the anti-graft agency confirmed this on Monday in Lagos.

The former minister was invited to answer questions relating to the forgery of a medical report which he allegedly procured to evade his trial before a Federal High Court in Lagos, the sources said.

Fani-Kayode was said to have arrived at the Lagos Office of the commission in the company of his lawyer at about 1pm.

He is still answering questions from the EFCC investigators as at the time of this report.

The commission said it would give an update on the interrogation later when it concludes its investigations.

Fani-Kayode is standing trial on an alleged N4.6 billion fraud before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

The EFCC had charged him alongside a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, and two others on 17 counts of conspiracy, money laundering, and fraud.

At the last sitting of the court on October 13, the judge had imposed a cost of N200,000 on him due to his failure to appear before the court for his re-arraignment following the transfer of the former trial judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa.

He was ordered to pay the fine or stand the risk of having his bail revoked after he failed to appear before the court for his re-arraignment.

Same Excuse
Instead of appearing for his re-arraignment, the former minister had sent a letter to the court, claiming that his doctors had placed him on bed rest.

Counsel to the EFCC, Mrs Bilikisu Buhari had informed the court that the letters by the second defendant had become numerous and had also become an excuse for him to evade trial.

“This is the third time he will be writing this type of letter from the same hospital,” she said. “Whenever he doesn’t want to attend court, this is the type of letter we get.”

But Fani-Kayode’s counsel, Bobo Fred-Ajudua, cut in and informed the judge that although his client’s illness was a recurring one, he had attended court regularly, and this could be shown from the court’s records.

He, thereafter, asked the court to grant an adjournment in favour of his client. At that point, the trial judge decided to go through the court’s file and after searching, he discovered that the second defendant had actually sought a similar medical excuse five times.

The court then asked the defence counsel to take one of two options which were to either revoke the bail of the second defendant or to impose a fine of N200,000 to be paid before the next trial date.

“From my records, the second defendant had written the court five times excusing his trial on medical grounds. February 1, 2018; May 30, 2019; November 24, 2020; March 21, 2021, and today’s letter dated October 9, 2021.

“The second defendant is to pay a cost of N200,000 before the next adjourned date, as the recurring medical excuses have been a pattern that slows down this trial,” the judge held.

The defence counsel chose the latter option.

Justice Osaigor then adjourned the case until November 30 for re-arraignment of all the defendants.

In counts one to seven, the defendants were alleged to have unlawfully retained over N3.8 billion which they reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act of stealing and corruption.

In counts eight to 14, the defendants were alleged to have unlawfully used over N970 million which they reasonably ought to have known formed part of an unlawful act of corruption.

Fani-Kayode and one Olubode Oke who is said to be at large, in counts 15 to 17, were alleged to have made cash payments of about N30 million – over the amount allowed by law, without going through a financial institution.

All the offences were said to have contravened the provisions of Sections 15 (3) (4), 16 (2) (b), and 16 (5) of the Money laundering (prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012.

Nigerians May Buy One Litre Of Fuel For N340 In 2022 If… Kyari

0

Mele Kyari, the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), on Tuesday said that subsidy would have been eliminated in 2020 but certain factors hampered it.

He, however, said that the law provides that by the end of February 2022, Nigeria should be out of the subsidy reign.

Kyari said this at the presentation of the World Bank Nigeria Development Update, November 2021 edition.

His words: “There will be no provision for it legally in our system, but I am also sure you will appreciate that government has a bigger social responsibility to cater for the ordinary and therefore engage in a process that will ensure that we exit in the most subtle and easy manner.”

Kyari assured that fuel subsidy removal would “definitely” be achieved in 2022 as it is now fully backed by law. The NNPC boss added that the price of the product may range between N320 and N340 per litre.

Presently, the official pump price of petrol (PMS) in Nigeria is N165. However, going by current market data, the commodity presently goes for prices ranging from N165 to N170. The over-the-country average price of petrol is presently N167. 50 per litre.

Our correspondent learnt that the NFF is pushing for a mutual agreement which will lead to the amicable termination of the contract and securing of soft landing on the issue of the $2million severance fee clauses in the coaches.

A very reliable source in the federation said, “The ministry told the NFF to propose a one-year salary advance in lieu of the severance package but the coach turned down the offer with his representatives pushing for the full payment of the severance package including a fine.

“They also disagreed with the proposal that the salary arrears of their client including the severance package be paid instrumentally, preferring to have it deducted from the annual subvention from the world football governing body FIFA instead.

They have even threatened to report the case to FIFA alleging undue pressure on their clients to forcefully accept unfavourable terms. Although Rohr has agreed to step down from his role as Eagles coach, the two parties are scheduled to meet on Tuesday and hopefully reach an agreement after which the official announcement of his sacking will be made.”
