Peoples Democratic Party, PDP stakeholders in Abriba ancient kingdom of Abia State, have commended the efforts of Gov Okezie Ikpeazu on Small and Medium Enterprises, and infrastructural development.

They described Ikpeazu’s recent award as the Governor of the Year on SME Develoment by the New Telegraph Newspaper; as well as the listing of Abia State as the third most preferred investment destination in Nigeria by the Natiomal Bureau of Statistics, NBS, as a confirmation of Ikpeazu’s efforts in promoting SME.

The stakeholders also applauded the governor for his efforts in tackling insecurity, saying that Abia is the safest state in South East, a development they attributed to the governor’s proactive strategies.

In a communique issued after their meeting yesterday at Ugwuezi Abriba, the stakeholders also insisted that come 2023, the Arochukwu/Ohafia House of Representatives slot should be ceded to Abriba in the spirit of justice and equity as other major clans from the constituency have taken their turn.

The communique read in part: “That we wish to restate our total confidence in the administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, PhD, who has continued to improve the infrastructure stock of the state, provide security for our people, and promote small and medium scale enterprises in the state.

“Of particular note to us are the construction of Ugwuezi Road, Abiriba and Abiriba-Nkporo Road by Governor Ikpeazu as well as numerous other roads done by his administration in Aba that have further enabled our people to engage in their primary occupation of trade and commerce.

“The Forum firmly resolved that while we appreciate the good representation by Hon Uko Nkole so far, the Ohafia/Arochukwu Federal House of Representative position in 2023 is naturally zoned to Abiriba and we hereby encourage our brothers and sisters from other communities within the constituency to, in the spirit of fairness and equity, support, at the appropriate time, the emergence of an Abiriba born candidate as the party’s flag-bearer.”

The stakeholders who vowed to mobilize all unregistered eligible Abriba voters home and abroad for massive voter registration ahead of the 2023 polls, commended the harmonious relationship among Abriba people in government and their support to the state government.

They however, urged the state Ministry of Works to “urgently intervene and fix the dilapidated Ugwu Court Road in Abiriba as well as conclude the Abiriba Ring Road project to enable our people enjoy this Yuletide season without undue hardship and threat to motorists.”

The forum also congratulated the Enachioken of Abiriba, HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu (IV) who was recently called to bar on his forthcoming 21st coronation as the paramount ruler of Abriba ancient kingdom.

Some of the signatories of the communique include the Leader of the Stakeholders forum, Chief Mba Ukariwo; Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Chief John Okiyi Kalu; and the Ohafia Council Chairman, Dr Okorafor Ukiwe; and Hon. Princess Grace Agbara.

Minority Leader of Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Bende North Constituency, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu has applauded the federal government for what he described as special attention to Abia in the area of erosion control and road.

This is even as he berated the ruling PDP in the state for accusing the FG of sabotaging its infrastructural development programmes.

Speaking with ABN TV on Thursday in Umuahia, the lawmaker said inability of the state government to manage interventions from the federal government is responsible for the blame game.

He said the federal representatives from Abia North have done more in road construction than the state government, insisting that it is a product of FG’s intervention.

He applauded Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Hon. Nkeiru Onyejeocha representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency, Hon. Benjamin Kalu representing Bende Federal Constituency for their giant steps in roads, erosion control and infrastructure in their respective domains, saying it is indication of the special attention FG has given to Abia.

The lawmaker stressed that the APC-led federal government has not sabotaged the state government in any way as being alleged by the state.

He said states like Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa receive their reimbursement after renovating federal roads, saying the poor standard of work being done by Abia government on federal roads may be the reason it is not being reimbursed, insisting that the federal government is not a father Christmas who does not know quality work.

Obaseki Says Nigeria At Risk With Growing Population Without Planning

0

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has called for urgent measures to check Nigeria’s population growth.

The governor made the call during a courtesy visit by the Secretary-General and Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund, Dr Natalia Kanem, at the Government House, Benin City.

He said, “For me, one of the key risks we face in Nigeria, both as an advantage and also as a key risk factor, is our population. If we do not do something about controlling our population growth, there will be a huge gap between our capacity to narrow the growth rate and our development.

“Yes, we could turn the 200 million-plus people we have today into a huge economic asset if we manage that growth. If we don’t and allow it to grow without proper planning, we will continue to play catch-up for decades to come.

“For us in government, it is a big risk that we must now begin to address and put our acts together. We believe in what you are doing. From that starting point, we believe in what you are doing and will need guidance and support on how to make sure that this issue becomes prominent on the agenda.

“Right now, it’s not taking the place it needs to take in our conversations about our development. One of the roles we expect and hope you will help us to play is just getting this debate about our population control on the agenda.”

The governor added, “For us in Edo, it’s about our people. It is about capacity, education and health, which is at the base. We have strengthened our basic education. The kids are now learning; our teachers are motivated and there are significant outcomes in our learning process.

“We are pushing the same model in our healthcare space. Thank you so much for the push for vaccine manufacturing. It is so important. As a country, we must build our capacity. The pandemic will be with us for a while. We can’t continue to be dependent.

“We need help to carry out our own sub-national census. We just commenced a 30-year planning process. We cannot do socio-economic planning, as well as our physical and urban planning without data. While working on the national population census, we also have to commence our own census with our planning process.”

Earlier, Kanem commended the governor for establishing a special court for prosecuting gender-based violence offenders in the state.

In a broadcast to mark the third anniversary of his administration, he said: “We’ve maintained fidelity with our electoral promises”.

He said he would work hard to exploit and develop the critical sectors of the state’s economy such as agriculture, tourism and mining to rescue Osun from overdependence on federal allocation and turn it to an economic hub of South West.

He said his administration had revitalised over 300 primary health centres and renovated some general hospitals in the state.

He said other primary health centres would soon be completed to cater for healthcare of the residents particularly at the grassroots.

How Security Subdued Gunmen Who Invaded Jos Correctional Centre

0

Gunmen have attacked the Jos Correctional Centre in Plateau State.

Emerging reports, however, suggest that security operatives have been able to repel the attack, although the identity of the assailants is yet to be verified.

Military Information Officer for Operation Safe Haven, Major Ishaku confirmed this on Sunday evening.

Ishaku explained that personnel of the joint task force at the facility fought to curtail the attackers.

Also giving an account of the attack, the Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Francis Enobore noted that the invaders arrived at the Jos custodial center at about 5:00 pm on Sunday and immediately approached the main gate where they were engaged and resisted by the armed squad personnel in a gun battle.

But the gunmen persisted and were able to break into the yard.

Mr Enobore however, noted that although the invaders gained entrance into the yard, they were trapped within the facility as personnel from other security services were mobilised to assist the armed guards to cordon the perimeter wall and the entire area.

While the gunmen were still cornered within the facility, additional reinforcement from the response squad of the custodial center joined their colleagues to ensure that the counter-assault was sustained.

The situation, according to the spokesperson, is now under control as the attackers’ firing power was subdued by superior fire from a combined team of security agencies.

The spokesman did not reveal if there were any casualties and if any arrests have been made.
