Robert Lewandowski has reacted after losing the 2021 Ballon d’Or award to Lionel Messi in Paris on Monday night.

Lewandowski finished second behind Messi, who landed his seventh title, the most by any player in the history of the award.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho was third while Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante were fourth and fifth respectively.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, placed sixth.

Messi Doesn’t Deserve Ballon d’Or Award – Toni Kroos

Real Madrid midfield star Toni Kroos has criticized the decision to hand Lionel Messi this year’s Ballon d’Or, with the German claiming ‘it’s absolutely not deserved’.

Messi beat off competition from Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to lift a record-extending seventh Ballon d’Or title.

The former Barcelona skipper claimed a maiden Copa America title with his country during 2021 and was also top scorer in LaLiga for the 2020-21 season with 30 goals as Barcelona finished third.

The 34-year-old also helped Barca win the Copa del Rey before moving to PSG on a free transfer in the summer.

He had collected the honour for a record sixth time in 2019 – one ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo – before the awards were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Most were expecting the prize to go to Lewandowski after he maintained the incredible goal-scoring form that made him favourite for last year’s prize before it was scrapped.

The Poland international, 33, finished second after scoring 38 goals in 30 league games for Bayern in 2021, in addition to winning the Bundesliga.

And Kroos was fiercely critical of the decision to name Messi as the winner before also revealing who he voted for in his top three.

Speaking on his podcast, Kroos said: “It’s absolutely not deserved.

“There is no doubt that Messi, with Cristiano, has been the player of the last decade, but this year there should’ve been others ahead of him.”

Kroos said his top three were Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema, Lewandowski and Jorginho.
Corroborating Kroos’ stance on the award, legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who had some sensational battles with Messi during his career, also admitted the PSG star should not have won the prize.

“It is increasingly difficult for me to believe in football awards.

“Messi is one of the best but you have to know who is the most outstanding player after the season. It’s not that hard.”

Messi only signed Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer from Barcelona during the summer.

The Argentina captain has now added to his 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019 trophies, after winning the Copa America for the first time with his country in July.

FG Wants Perpetrators Of Incest, Rape Castrated

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Pauline Tallen, has called for castration of perpetrators of incest and rape in the country.

She spoke Monday during a news briefing as part of activities to host the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, Natalia Kanem, who visited Nigeria.

Describing castration as the most suitable punishment for perpetrators, the minister said naming and shaming perpetrators would reduce the menace.

She said: “It’s the worst crime against any child. It’s not only the child that’s badly traumatized and she’ll live with it for life. The mother too will remain traumatized all her life and for that, we’re advocating a very stringent punishment for such cases of incest.

“If we do one or two, I believe the high burden of incest and rape will drop, and that’s why we’re insisting that all states must domesticate the VAP Act and the Child Rights Act, but not just domesticating it, but ensuring high implementation.”

The authorities have confirmed death of nine inmates in the ensuing gun duel between security agencies and gunmen that invaded the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Jos on Sunday. Six prisoners sustained major injuries with 252 others currently at large.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the correctional centre, Francis Enobore, an officer lost his life during the encounter.

The statement further explained that one of the trapped attackers had been identified among the casualties.

It reads: “The attackers, who stormed the custodial centre at about 1720hrs on Sunday, November 28, 2021 engaged the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) armed squad personnel in a fierce gun battle before breaking into the yard.

“Sadly, one of the NCoS armed squad personnel paid the supreme price in the encounter, while nine inmates also lost their lives. Another staff of the service was shot in the hand and six inmates were also injured in the attack.

“Meanwhile, some of the attackers and a total of 262 inmates escaped in the melee before reinforcement could come from sister services. However, 10 have so far been recaptured, leaving 252 at large.”

The Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, who condoled with the family and friends of the fallen officer, vowed that the perpetrators would be hunted and made to face the full wrath of the law.

He, therefore, called for collaboration from patriotic individuals to apprehend the fleeing inmates, as well as volunteering credible intelligence to forestall future recurrence.

The custodial centre as at the time of the attack had 1,060 inmates – comprising 560 pre-trial detainees – and 500 convicts.

Come Out To Ensure Good Leaders Emerge, Protest Over Bad Roads In Aba Not Enough, Udensi Tells NBA

0

Interpol Systems Consultant in Nigeria, Sir Chikwe Udensi has called on the Aba branch of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA to mobilise their members and ensure that good leaders emerge as 2023 election approaches, noting that the planned protest over the bad state of roads in Aba and environs is not enough.

While noting that protest is their fundamental rights as citizens, Udensi said he does not see how it will address the leadership deficit the state has suffered for sometime now.

Speaking on a radio programme, Open Parliament on Family Love FM Umuahia on Wednesday monitored by ABN TV, Sir Udensi said apart from the possibility of the now-suspended planned strike being hijacked, there are not guarantees that it would yield anything.

The NBA Aba branch has earlier planned to stage a peaceful protest over the bad state of roads but were persuaded to give the state government the benefit of doubt to act on the road.

Following this agreement, NBA suspended the planned strike.

Udensi also pointed that leadership in the country is part of the problem and not just the leadership.

He knocked the government of Abia for lying to the people that SETRACO Construction company is working while they are nowhere in the state.

According to Udensi, information from a top official of SETRACO indicates that there is no work going on there, alleging that the officials of government may have deceived the governor into believing that the construction giant is in Abia working.

Count Us Out Of Restructuring, Give Us Referendum, Biafra, IPOB Insists

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra has said it is not against restructuring of Nigeria.

The Media and Publicity Secretary of the secessionist group, Emma Powerful, said this on Monday in a statement made available to our correspondent in Awka, Anambra State.

The group, however, said its major demand was for a referendum to decide whether “Biafra” would continue to be part of Nigeria or not.

He said, “Nigeria government must bear one thing in mind, IPOB is not fighting restructuring. We are not against restructuring but our demand is not restructuring.

“Our demand is restoration of Biafra State. All we need is a date for referendum to decide whether or not we want to continue with this forced marriage (Nigeria).

“Those who think Nigeria is ready for restructuring may have to think again. Those benefiting from the current lop-sidedness have made restructuring impossible. They are unlikely to heed the clamour for restructuring.

“But for us, the only thing that can make us slow down a little is government giving us date for referendum. Restoration of the Sovereign State of Biafra is a divine mandate.”
