We’re In Support Of Kaduna State Govt To Sack 233 Fake Teachers — NUT

0

The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday backed the state government’s decision to sack 233 teachers alleged to have been working with fake certificates.

The Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Dalhatu told journalists in Kaduna that the union would not defend any teacher with fake certificates.

“As far as NUT is concerned, we will not defend them if the allegation of tendering fake certificates is true.

“We have instructed the affected teachers that if any of them have a genuine certificate and his or her name is on the list, they should submit the certificate to us.

“We will follow up with Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to rectify the issue,’’ he said.

On the competency test for public primary school teachers, the NUT chairman said that the union’s decision not to participate in the test had not changed.

According to him, only the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has the mandate to test and certify a professional teacher and not any state government agency.

“We will not go for any test. If the Kaduna SUBEB wants to assess the performance of our members, it should follow them to the class and assess them while they are teaching pupils,’’ he said.

The NUT National Executive Council had on Nov. 18 directed its members in Kaduna State not to participate in the competency test organised by the state government.

The Deputy National President of the union, Mr Kelvin Nwankwo, who gave the directive, insisted that teachers’ competence had been proved by various accredited universities and colleges of education.

He stressed that the teachers were also tested before they were hired.

According to him, the NUT affirms and relies on the provisions of Section 1(d) of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Act 2004, which made provisions for the regulation and control of the teaching profession.

“As teachers who belong to a professional body, registered and licensed, we shall only subject ourselves to any professional recommendation issued by our Regulatory Council, and to no other body,’’ Nwankwo said.

NAN reports that the list of the affected teachers provided by the Kaduna SUBEB shows that 210 out of the 233 affected teachers claimed to have obtained their certificates at the National Teachers Institute, Kaduna.

Kaduna SUBEB’s Executive Chairman, Mr Tijjani Abdullahi, had announced earlier on Thursday that the board would sack 233 primary school teachers for allegedly presenting fake certificates.

Abdullahi said the board would forward the files of affected teachers to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution.

The SUBEB boss also disclosed that the board would conduct competency tests for primary school teachers as part of the continued assessment of their capacity to ensure quality teaching

Two Days After Senator Kalu’s Visit, Amaechi Meets With Nnamdi Kanu In DSS Facility

Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, a First Republic parliamentarian and former Minister of Aviation, on Thursday visited the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

This was made known by Kanunta Kanu, younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu via his known social media pages.

Amaechi visited Kanu alongside the co-Chair of the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace, Bishop Sunday Onuoha. Nnamdi Kanu’s sibling said the visitors “had a meaningful interaction” with the IPOB leader.

“Chief Mbazuruike Amaechi and His Grace Bishop Sunday .N. Onuoha visited their son #MaziNnamdiKanu the leader of IPOB at #DSS Headquarters in Abuja today, where they hard a meaningful interaction,” Kanunta Kanu wrote.

Two Days After Senator Kalu's Visit, Amaechi Meets With Nnamdi Kanu In DSS Facility

ABNN TV recalls that twelve days ago, Chief Amaechi, a nonagenarian, led Igbo elders to Aso Rock Villa where they met President Muhammadu Buhari and asked for Kanu who has been held since June, to be freed.

There, Buhari said the unconditional release of the IPOB leader, who is currently standing trial for treason, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.

On Thursday, Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja rescheduled Kanu’s trial from January 19 to 18, 2022.

The shift in the trial date followed the abridgement of time granted by the Judge following a passionate plea to that effect.

Kanu’s lead lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor had approached the Court with an application seeking an order of the Court to accommodate the trial in November and December this year as against the earlier January 19, 2022.

The prosecuting Attorney of the Federal Government, Shuaib Labaran, however, told the Court that a counter affidavit opposing the request by the government has been filled and served on Kanu.

Justice Nyako informed Kanu’s lawyer that the application for time abridgement cannot be granted because there was no judicial time for such an issue.

During the drama that ensued, the case diary of the Court was read to the lawyer to establish that the Court has crowded pending cases.

Following the insistence, Justice Nyako agreed to shift other cases slated for January 18 to accommodate the trial which would last till January 19 and 20.

Justice Nyako ordered the DSS to allow Kanu to practice his faith, change his clothes, and be given the maximum possible comfort in the detention facility.

Kaduna State Govt To Sack 233 Teachers Over Fake Certificates

Kaduna State has announced the plan to dismiss 233 teachers who presented fake certificates.

Alhaji Tijjahi Abdullahi, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB), stated this at a news briefing on Thursday.

The Chairman said as part of its responsibility to ensure that all teachers actually have the qualifications they presented, the Board launched a certificate verification exercise in April 2021.

He said the major objective of the exercise was to ensure that teachers have the requisite credentials that constitute the basic qualifications for their employment.

He said the Board verified 451 certificates by contacting the institutions that awarded the certificates in which nine of the 13 institutions contacted responded.

“The responses from the institutions show that 233 teachers presented fake certificates. This represents 51% of the 451 certificates on which responses have been received from the awarding institutions. One institution disowned 212 of these 233 fake certificates.”

“The Board will dismiss the 233 teachers who presented these fake certificates, while their files will be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice to initiate prosecution for forgery,” he said.

According to him, the Board will continue to check the integrity of the certificates presented by teachers to ensure that this critical profession is not devalued by impostors.

The Chairman further added that as part of duty of transparency, the names of the 233 teachers found to have presented fake certificates will be uploaded on the website of the Kaduna State Government.

The Board also said it will shortly be conducting the competency test for teachers.

The State Government recruited 25,000 new teachers after the 2017 competency test, and made it clear that it will continue to assess its teachers both for their own improvement and for better delivery of learning outcomes of pupils.

The Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator Representing Abia North on Thursday Afternoon received newly elected officials of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)led  by the National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu alongside other newly elected officials of the party  at his Aso-Villa Abuja home.

Anyanwu, a former Senator and other newly elected officials of the PDP breezed into Kalu’s Abuja home at precisely 12:28pm.

Disembarking from his vehicle clad in navy blue native attire the visibly delighted National Secretary was welcomed by Kalu’s associates and then led straight with his executives to  meet Orji Kalu.

On sighting one another both men engaged in pleasantries and embraced each other and then proceeded for an indoor meeting. As the meeting progressed other executives of the party arrived in turns to Kalu’s residence to join the meeting.

The visit comes  amidst strong talks that the former Abia Governor is being positioned for the 2023 presidency to succeed the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that on October 30,2021 the PDP elected it’s new set of members from various parts of the country into its National Working Committee (NWC) to take over the leadership of the party.

In 2016 Senator Kalu formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), he contested and won the 2019 Senatorial elections and led the APC to landslide victories for other legislative positions in Abia North. The former Governor also led a strong campaign in his Abia North to become the only zone in the SouthEast to have given  Buhari 68% votes during the 2019 general elections.

Also recall that in 1998, Kalu alongside a few others founded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Kalu solely made an initial donation of N100 million aside a loan of N500 million to the party at the formation stage. He won the governorship contest in Abia State in 1999 on the platform of the PDP. Kalu steered the affairs of the state from 1999 to 2007.

The opposition party (PDP) lost the presidential seat to the All Progressives Congress (APC) both in 2015 and 2019.

In the South-east, the PDP lost grip of a major stronghold, Ebonyi State, to the ruling APC due to the defection of Governor Dave Umahi. The party also lost in the South-South with the unexpected defection of Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade  to the APC.

At the 2021 PDP convention , 3,600 delegates voted for new members of the NWC of the PDP at the convention, with only the office of the Deputy National Chairman (South) and the Youths Leader contested out of the 21 NWC positions.

Court Orders DSS To Allow Nnamdi Kanu Change Clothes

0

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, deferred hearing of the application the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, filed to quash the treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him, till January 18, 2022.

The adjournment came on a day trial Justice Binta Nyako ordered the Department of State Services, DSS, to allow the defendant to practice his faith and change his clothes.

The court equally directed the security agency to give the detained IPOB leader “maximum possible comfort in the detention facility”.

Kanu, who was remanded in custody of the DSS, had since June when he was arrested in Kenya and returned back to the country for continuation of his trial, wore only one attire.

He had, on the two occasions that he was brought before the court by heavily-armed security agents, worn a designers Fendi trousers and jacket, which he was reportedly putting on the day he was arrested.

Meanwhile, Kanu was absent in court at the resumed proceedings in his case on Thursday.

Though trial Justice Nyako had on November 10, adjourned the trial till January 19, 2022, she however brought the date forward, following an application by Kanu’s legal team for an abridgement of the date.

When the matter was called up, government lawyer, Mr. Shuaib Labaran, told the court that he filed a counter-affidavit to oppose Kanu’s requests for abridgement of time and for the charge to be quashed.

Without allowing the prosecution and the defence team to engage in any form of argument, Justice Nyako, after reviewing the court’s diary, said she could only bring the case forward to January 18, which is a day before the initial adjourned date.

Justice Nyako said she would hear all pending applications on that date.

Specifically, Kanu, in an application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, is asking the court to acquit and discharge him of all counts in the charge.

He argued that the court lacks the requisite jurisdiction to try him on the basis of a charge he said was grossly incompetent.

The embattled IPOB leader contended that there was no proof of evidence attached to the amended charge against him.

According to him, “No allegation was made in any of the counts of the amended charge that the alleged sundry acts of the defendant/applicant were physically carried out by him, within the geographical space or territorial boundaries of Nigeria.

“That the only element requisite to constitute and found liability for incitement is the actual words allegedly uttered by the defendant/applicant.

“That the alleged acts for which the defendant was charged do not constitute terrorism offences in London, United Kingdom, where they were allegedly committed,” Kanu added.

It will be recalled that the IPOB leader had earlier applied to be transferred from custody of DSS to the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Even though the request was refused, Justice Nyako ordered the DSS to grant him access to three visitors of his choice, every Monday and Thursday of the week.

Speaking with Vanguard shortly before the court commenced sitting on Thursday, a member of Kanu’s legal team, Mr. Maxwell Opara, said the application to move him out of DSS custody would be revisited.

Flop Werner

Manchester United new interim manager Ralf Rangnick is reportedly targeting a reunion with Timo Werner at Old Trafford.

Rangnick, 63, has been given a budget of £100million in January as United look to make multiple signings in the upcoming window.

And he is keen to use his ties at RB Leipzig and Salzburg to make quality additions.

Amadou Haidara and Christopher Nkunku are two players who worked under him that are on his radar.

But it’s also claimed that Werner is on Rangnick’s four-man shortlist as the striker continues to struggle at Chelsea.

Werner made his name teaming up with Ragnick at Leipzig as the Blues would spend £47.5m on the German forward.

But the pacey attacker has failed to replicate that form in the Premier League and is reportedly available in the upcoming window for the right price.

And according to reports in Germany, Ragnick is interested in linking up with his former player and feels he can get the best out of Werner once again at United.

Man United Eye First Premier League Win Against Arsenal In Three Years

Manchester United will welcome old foes Arsenal to Old Trafford for Thursday’s Premier League fixture.

United go into the tie on the back of a hard fought 1-1 draw against league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while the Gunners defeated Newcastle United 2-0 at the Emirates.

United have taken just one point from their last four Premier League games at Old Trafford – scoring only once in that time.

And they are up against an Arsenal side they have not beaten in the English top flight in three years. The last time United beat Arsenal in the league was on April 29 2018 under Jose Mourinho, a 2-1 victory.

Since then, United have gone on six consecutive league fixtures without a win, losing three and drawing three.

Also, the Gunners have not conceded a goal to the Red Devils since September 2019,

With Michael Carrick expected to be in charge against Mikel Arteta’s side, it remains to be seen if United will end their winless streak against their old foes.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire returns from suspension in time to face the Gunners and is sure to slot straight back into the defence.
Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane make up a trio of absentees for the hosts, who are still sweating over the fitness of Luke Shaw due to a head injury.

After not making the starting eleven being against Chelsea, Cristiano Ronaldo should return for United.

As for the Gunners, Bukayo Saka went down holding his groin in the Newcastle win, and Arteta subsequently confirmed that the 20-year-old did feel a muscular problem.

Saka has not been ruled out of this game just yet, but the door has opened for Gabriel Martinelli to earn a deserved start, and Arteta’s only two confirmed absentees at this time are long-term victims Sead Kolasinac (ankle) and Granit Xhaka(knee).

Alexandre Lacazette’s run in the starting lineup came to an end on Saturday as Martin Odegaard returned to the first eleven and it is difficult to see the Norwegian losing his place here.

Joe Cole Questions Benitez Position At Everton

Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has questioned the position of Everton manager Rafa Benitez after last night’s 4-1 derby defeat.

Everton fans – who showed their ire towards the players during Sunday’s defeat at Brentford – were seen leaving Goodison Park after just 20 minutes of the derby, therefore missing Demarai Gray’s strike in the 38th minute.

“I feel Rafael Benitez at Everton doesn’t sit right,” Cole said at the final whistle.

“They have hit a bump in the road and for fans to be leaving after 20 mins shows for me whoever made that decision to bring him in, it is a bad one.

“Rafa is such a legend at Liverpool. I feel for the fans because the money that has been spent on this club over the last 10 years, they should be in a better position than they are.

“Players and managers over the years have to take responsibility, but equally the recruitment has not been good enough.

“This looks like the gap between Liverpool and Everton is huge.”
