Abia APC Talks Tough, Says Sacking PDP In 2023 A Must

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia says the party has the human and material resources to wrestle power away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023.

The Chairman of the state Caretaker Committee, Chief Donatus Nwankpa, said this at a news briefing in Umuahia on Thursday.

Nwankpa, who spoke through the Secretary-elect of the party, Mr Perfect Okorie, said APC was poised to take over Abia to provide good governance and infrastructure development, currently lacking in the state.

He said: “In 2023, it will dawn on all Abia people that APC has come to take over the state.

“We have men of high calibre and proven integrity at the top-level of Nigeria’s politics, who are prepared to redeem Abia from PDP’s maladministration and move the state forward.

“We have men, who are ready to wipe away the tears of the downtrodden, workers and pensioners, who are owed many months of their legitimate entitlements.”

Nwankpa said the present administration in Abia had made the state a laughing stock among other states of the federation.

“We are all ashamed of the total dilapidation of infrastructure in the state. No sector is spared,” he said.

He gave assurance that President Muhammadu Buhari would ensure that votes counted in 2023, adding that “it will not be business as usual in Abia.”

According to him, the president has shown with the Anambra governorship poll that he is determined to enthrone a credible electoral process in the country.

Nwankpa dismissed the fear that the prevailing economic difficulties and security challenges in the country would sway votes against APC across board in 2023.

“The economic downturn is a global phenomenon, which was hugely exacerbated by economic meltdown and COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is not limited to Nigeria. It is a global dilemma,” he said.

Nwankpa also spoke on the current state of the party in Abia, following the parallel congresses at the ward, local government and state levels.

He said the national leadership of the party put the inauguration of the newly elected executives on hold across the federation.

“That the newly elected state executive of the party had not been inuagurated after the state congress is not peculier to Abia.

“So, all the interim caretaker committees, instituted in all the 36 states, are still in charge of the affairs of the party,” he said.

Nwankpa further said that some party members, loyal to his leadership, obtained an interim order from an Abia High Court in Ukwa on Oct. 21.

He said the order restrained the party and its national leadership “from receiving, accepting and/or acting on the purported list of successful candidates” for the Abia Congress.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Foreign Lawyers Seek UK Ministers Intervention Over IPOB Leader’s Ordeals

0

Nnamdi Kanu’s foreign counsel, Bindmans LLP said it has been instructed by the family of the IPOB leader to raise urgent concerns with UK ministers about the separatist’s detention “in conditions which amount to torture”, ABN TV reports.

The London law firm on Thursday said it has also outlined a series of options for diplomatic and international legal action against Nigeria and key officials in the West African country, requesting assurances that they will be considered urgently and the resulting action plan is then fully explained.

Kanu is a Nigerian-British national and leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB is agitating for the breakup of Nigeria and sovereign nation of Biafra. Kanu was brought to Nigeria from Kenya in controversial circumstances. Since 27 June 2021, he has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS). His lawyers have also alleged that he is being denied medical assistance “for ongoing health conditions”.

Concerns have repeatedly been raised by Bindmans with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and by Kanu’s lawyers in Nigeria with the authorities and courts there.

According to Bindmans, to date, the UK’s diplomatic efforts have had very little effect as “UK officials have only been able to visit Kanu once whilst in detention; his conditions of detention have not changed since that visit and no other progress has been made in assisting him”.

Shirin Marker, Solicitor at Bindmans LLP who is representing Kanu’s family said:
“The British government has a firm and explicit policy on condemning and seeking to end torture and mistreatment. That policy sets out a range of actions open to the UK authorities when an individual with British nationality is subject to torture abroad. There is no dispute that Mr Kanu is being tortured.

“To do otherwise would be inconsistent with the UK’s obligations under international law and the principles of its policy.

“We have made detailed representations to the FCDO on its legal obligations through its lawyers, and expect a prompt response on what action will now be taken.”

I Can’t Resign Because Of Jailbreaks, Says Aregbesola

0

Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola yesterday said the recent frequent jailbreaks across the country will not be a good reason for him to resign his position as minister.

Aregbesola said this while addressing State House Correspondents after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Aregbesola explained that the jailbreaks did not happen as a result of lack of preparedness but through number of factors.

The minister said a number of prison officials died defending the custodial centres, which he said was the highest form of honor for the country.

“Imo was in April this year. Kabba was in September. Abologo was in October and Jos was in November. Those captured the attacks. As painful as those attacks were, very painful, nobody will really want the end of justice to be so vulnerable.

“The custodial facilities are the final end of criminal justice administration. So, morally, the state owes itself the responsibility of safe custody that must not be violated.

“On that account alone, we must appreciate the enormity of any successful attack on custodial facilities. And I so do. But I want us to put these things in the context of our security situation.

“When our best does not suffice, it’s no longer a question of your inability to make preparation or failure for preparation or preparedness. It’s just that at that instance, you just couldn’t hold the defence. And several factors are responsible for this.

“What I can assure Nigerians is this. Yes, as contextual as these attacks and the successes such criminals are having, we are upping our game and we will not allow; we will prevent any such opportunistic attack and even make it impossible. That is what the state must do.

“We are working with all arms of government, particularly the security, to make our custodial facilities impregnable. We will not rest until that is achieved. So, that’s the assurance I’ll give to Nigerians.

“As to whether it calls for my resignation. I still don’t see any need for that because it’s not for lack of preparedness that the attacks were successful. No.”

Also, the FEC has approved N965.9 million for the purchase of 49 operational vehicles for us by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS). Aregbesola said the vehicles, which would be procured from local manufacturers, would complement the ones already in use by the Correctional Service.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said the council approved N145 million for an office accommodation for the Federal Character Commission in Bayelsa State at N145 million.

He also announced the approval of N136.2 million for operational vehicles for the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

Also, the FEC ratified the Finance Bill 2021/2022 fiscal year.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zaynab Ahmed, who announced the ratification to State House correspondents, explained that the Bill, which is currently before the National Assembly, focuses on tax as well as reviewing and amending some 11 fiscal laws.

She explained that rather than propose new taxes, or increase tax rates, the Finance Bill for the 2022 fiscal year focuses on blocking loopholes and improving tax administration.

“They came in vehicles and were more than 10.

“They barricaded his palace, shot indiscriminately into the air before they took him away in a waiting vehicle.”

It was gathered that the palace of the king is excluded, a bit isolated from neighbouring houses, a factor that made it difficult for his subjects to come to his aid.

Police spokesperson in the state, CSP Mike Abattam, confirmed the incident.

Abattam said the command had swung into action with an attempt to rescue the monarch unhurt.
