Sen. Kalu Mourns Soun Of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ajagungbade, Describes Him As Epitome Of Peace, Humility

Former Governor of Abia state and Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Kalu has described the demise of the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III as a huge loss to the country.

Describing the late monarch as an epitome of peace and humility, Kalu acknowledged the contributions of Oba Oyewumi to nation building in various capacities.

The former Governor stressed that the late traditional ruler was a role model for his contemporaries, adding that the late monarch was forthright, kind- hearted, humble and courageous.

In a condolence message, Kalu who is the Aro of Ogbomosoland, conveyed his sincere condolences to the people of Ogbomosoland especially members of the royal family.

He said, “I received with a heavy heart the news of the demise of the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba (Dr.) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III,  who passed at the age of 95.

“The late monarch was a blessing to Ogbomoso, Oyo state and Nigeria in general.

“He played leading roles in promoting peace and unity across the country.

“The late traditional ruler was respected across the country in view of his personal and leadership attributes.

“He was a compassionate leader and selfless statesman.

“His counsel on national issues will be greatly missed.

“Kabiyesi’s worthy legacies will continue to speak for him.

“I urge the Oyewumi family to sustain the good deeds of their late patriarch”.

Kalu prayed to Allah to grant the late monarch Al-Jannah Firdaus.

Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III is dead

It was gathered that the monarch died early Sunday morning at the age of 95 after spending 47 years on the throne.

Palace sources confirmed his death to Vanguard but stated that his death has not been officially announced.

He ascended the throne on October 24, 1973. He was born on May 27, 1926, in Ogbomoso to Oba Bello Afolabi Oyewumi Ajagungbade II and Ayaba Seliat Olatundun Oyewumi.

In a congratulatory message on Saturday, Sir Udensi who described Mr. Okali as ‘my brother’ applauded his selfless services in God’s kingdom.

The security expert prayed that Mr. Okali’s service in the vineyard of The Almighty will not go unrewarded, even as he prayed for more blessings upon the awardee.

The award came few days after Mr. Okali trounced 3 contestants to emerge the Publicity Secretary of Ebem Ohafia Development Union, EODU in a keenly contested election.

A youth himself, he had continued to champion the cause of development of young people through empowerment, education and career counseling.

His platforms, ABN TV and Radio have been readily available for the promotion of issues that border on the development of young people across the Southeast region and the country at large.

Emirati Minister Insists It’ll Be Unreasonable To Retain Air Peace Slots At Sharjah Airport After Nigeria-UAE Row

Amid the ongoing diplomatic fireworks between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates, the Emirati Minister of Economy, Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, has said that it is unreasonable for the Arab nation to retain the slots of Nigeria-based Air Peace airline at the Sharjah International Airport.

The minister, who is also the chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority in the UAE, described as unjust, the decision of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to withdraw its approval for Emirates Airline winter schedule, cutting down the carrier’s passenger flights to just once a week.

Al Marri made this known in a letter penned on December 10, 2021, and addressed to the Nigerian Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika.

The Nigerian Government had on Thursday, in a letter through the NCAA Director-General, Musa Nuhu, whittled the flights of Emirates Airlines to just one per week.

Nigeria had about a week ago lifted the ban on Emirates Airline’s flights to Nigeria after suspending the carrier from operating into Nigeria for several months earlier, due to concerns over UAE carrier’s requirements in the management of COVID-19.

Nuhu had stated that following the lifting of the ban, the UAE-based airline applied to the Federal Ministry of Aviation for approval of its winter flight schedule, consisting of 21 weekly passenger flight frequencies to Nigeria, noting that Nigeria approved the schedule in the spirit and intent of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between both countries.

He had, however, expressed dissatisfaction that Air Peace Airlines, the only Nigerian airline that operates passenger flights to Sharjah International Airport in the UAE, requested three weekly passenger flight frequencies but was granted only one.

Subsequently, Emirates Airline on Friday announced the suspension of its flights to Nigeria, attributing its decision to the NCAA policy limiting its operation in the country to one flight per week.

Nigeria currently has signed BASAs with over 90 countries including the UAE. However, over the years, stakeholders have lamented that most air agreements between Nigeria and other countries have been one-sided as Nigerian airlines have been unable to reciprocate the agreements due to what they termed, “aero-politics”.

Currently, over 25 foreign airlines operate flights into Nigeria; some daily, from multiple destinations. While only one Nigerian airline operates internationally, one or two others operate on regional routes.

According to Sirika, Nigeria signed its BASA with the UAE in December 2017 and Nigeria-based Medview Airlines had commenced direct flights from Lagos to Dubai via Abuja but the operations had hit the rocks when the airline faced a crisis.

While Emirates Airline has been plying multiple frequencies to-and-fro the Abuja and Lagos airports, no Nigerian airline operated the routes for years after Medview Airlines’ short stint until recently when Air Peace reactivated the route.

UAE, especially, Dubai, is a top destination among Nigerian migrants. A percentage of vibrant Nigerian youthful population finds the Middle East nation attractive. Nigerian elite and bourgeoisie also find the tourism hotspots in the gulf state appealing. Many Nigerian politicians have been reported to own properties in the UAE while international internet fraudsters including Abass Ramon aka Hushpuppi had been arrested in their havens in Dubai.

AIR TRANSPORT RELATIONS

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) presents its compliments to the Federal Ministry of Aviation (FMA) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and has the honour to refer to the letter Ref. No. NCAA/DG/AIR/11/16/329 dated 9th December 2021, whereby the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) notified the Country Manager, Emirates Airline (EK) in Nigeria regarding the withdrawal of the ministerial approval granted to that airline with respect to their Winter Schedule. The NCAA further advised EK that this withdrawal becomes effective on Sunday 12th December 2021 at 2300Z and hence, EK “is granted approval to operate only one weekly passenger frequency to Abuja on Thursdays”.

The GCAA has the honour to highlight that such a decision by the NCAA is totally unjustified especially, as it has come to our attention that their action is being taken against the background of Air Peace not securing all 3 slots at Sharjah Airport which they desire. (Air Peace initially operated at Sharjah Airport, shifted to Dubai Airport and then returned to Sharjah airport. It would be unreasonable for an airline to expect any airport to maintain their slots when they ceased operating at that airport.) In this regard, we wish to kindly advise you. that Sharjah Airport is currently operating at 140% slot capacity, but with goodwill and tremendous effort on their Side, this Airport was able to accommodate Air Peace with 1 of the 3 slots that this airline requested.

The GCAA wishes to stress that the action being taken by the NCAA is obviously not in line with the spirit of the agreed air services arrangements between our two Nations. As we are both aware, the relations between our two brotherly countries are vintage in nature, one hallmark being the recent visit of the President of Nigeria to the UAE, which certainly mirrored the status of these positive relations.

Finally, we suggest that Air Peace should consider flying their two other flights to any UAE airport at which there are available slots. As expected, the GCAA will support Air Peace in this activity, where required.

Your Excellency, your kind support is anticipated so that the NCAA reviews their decision and restores the approval of the Emirates Airline Winter Schedule, as filed. In this regard, we wish to reiterate that this is a purely operational matter between Air Peace and Sharjah Airport and in any case it should have absolutely no implications for Emirates Airline.

Strike: ASUU To Reach Decision December 15

The Federal Government has said it is still reviewing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding which it signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

ASUU had on November 15, 2021 given the Federal Government an ultimatum of three weeks over the failure of the government to meet some of its lingering demands.

The lecturers had also threatened to embark on another round of industrial action, following the unfaithfulness in the implementation of the Memorandum of Action the Federal Government signed with the union upon which the year 2020 strike action was suspended.

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview with The PUNCH on December 5, 2021 lamented that despite the meetings with the minister of labour; only one of the demands by ASUU had been met.

When contacted by our correspondent, Ngige simply said the review of the MOU was in progress.

He said, “The plans are ongoing for the review of the implementation of the MOU. We will review the ones that have been met and the ones that have not been met.”

Meanwhile, sources on Friday told our correspondent that ASUU would decide whether to go on strike or not following the outcomes of its zonal meetings scheduled to end on December 15, 2021.

The sources who confided in our correspondent also shared a document that contained the breakdown of locations where the zonal meetings would take place.

Our correspondent noted that the meetings would span between December 9 and December 15 in Abuja, Nsukka, Ibadan, Yola, Benin, Akure, Lagos, Bauchi, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Sokoto, and Kano.

“The decision on whether to go on strike or not would depend on the outcome of the meetings from each zone”. The sources added.

Stop Starving, Maltreating Nnamdi Kanu – IPOB Tells DSS

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has accused the Department of States Services of high-handedness in the handling of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in its custody, claiming the DSS is starving and maltreating him.

According to the secessionist group, the DSS has denied Kanu food, for three days running.

The group called on the security agency to, as a matter of urgency, transfer Kanu to Kuje prison or any other correctional centre, where suspects awaiting trails are kept.

The group’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, stated this in a statement, on Saturday, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent.

The statement read, “We are the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to place the world on notice over the continued maltreatment and humiliation of our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, custody Abuja.

“The evil and compromised Nigeria DSS security agent has decided to use starvation and hunger strategy to eliminate our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the custody. They have continued to confine him to a solitary cell under harsh conditions since his rendition to Nigeria in June. Solitary confinement is not correctional centers. They should send him to Kuje Prison, pending his court dates.

“They are asking the Nigeria government and security agencies that is busy granting and releasing bandits and real terrorists everyday to transfer our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to a Nigerian prison/Correctional Centre, where persons awaiting trial are kept.

“Nothing should happen to our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in detention.

“Nigerian DSS has denied our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, food since three to four days now.

“The whole world should take note of these atrocities and torture being meted out against our innocent Leader. Amnesty International, and other human rights groups should take note. American government; Israeli government; Canadian government; German government; and, other Western and civilised countries in the UK and Europe, should prevail on Nigerian DSS to stop starving and torturing our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. His rights should not be violated anymore.

“Nigeria should take our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to prison custody and stop violating his rights at the DSS cell.”

Activist Urges Tinubu To Bury 2023 Presidential Ambition, Allow South East To Rule

Ahead of the 2023 general election, a political activist, Austin Braimoh, has urged the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to bury his presidential ambition and support a South East candidate for the number one office in the land.

Speaking with journalists recently, Braimoh, a member of the Police Service Commission, advised major political parties to zone their Presidential tickets to the South East region for equity and unity of the country.

Braimoh said, “There is homogeneity in the northern part of the country and that is why a particular section can produce the president in succession and there would not be acrimony and this situation is lacking in the South.

“I want to appeal to politicians who are asking that zoning should be jettisoned and should no longer be considered to realise that they are trying to perpetuate injustice, and you cannot have true peace without justice.

“I want to appeal to our leader, our father, Alhaji Bola Tinubu that I know has a big heart, I know that he would at the appropriate time come out to say that he is throwing his support for a candidate of south-east extraction.”

According to him, in 1998, major political actors agreed to compensate the South West with the presidency over the annulment of June 12 and the death of MKO Abiola.

“Then, it was agreed that the presidency would be rotated between the north and south; South West has produced President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan from the South-South and as such South-East should be given the slot this time”

He said those who are arguing that late President Yar’Adua is from the north west with President Muhammadu Buhari to understand that the south have clear cultural boundaries but the north is homogenous and does not have the same cultural divide like the south.

“I think any attempt to deny the south of that opportunity, amounts to injustice and ungodly”, he said.

Member of the House of Representatives, Mr Dennis Idahosa (APC-Edo), has said that any politician who fails to deliver on their campaign promises to the people should be stoned.

The representative of Ovia federal constituency said the same fate would befall politicians in his constituency considering the high standard that had been set in the constituency, noting the people would no longer tolerate any none performer.

Idahosa made the declaration when he distributed motorcycles to 160 women and youths as empowerment at Iguobazuwa, in Ovia South-West Local Government Area, Benin, Edo on Saturday.

“Politics is not about winning elections but fulfilling your campaign promises; here. I can say that any politician that does not fulfill his campaign promises to the electorate should be stoned.

He further said that the State Constituency of Ohafia North are happy with his successor-representative in the House, Hon Mandela Obasi, saying if elected officers act the way Mandela acts, electorates will not regret electing their leaders.

He prayed God to continue to bless the Speaker and grant him greater wisdom for the future.
