After Claiming That He Has Improved The Living Standard Of Nigerians, Mike Ozekhome Disagrees With Buhari

0

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mike Ozekhome on Tuesday, disagreed over claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that his stewardship has brought about improvement in various sectors of the economy in the past six and a half years.

The President had recently stated in Paris at the Nigeria International Partnership Forum, NIPF that his administration has succeeded in revitalizing the nation’s economy, built infrastructure and uplifted the living standards of Nigerians since he assumed power in 2015; a claim dismissed by the legal luminary who in a chat with Vanguard, described the state of affairs in the land as hopeless.

According to Ozekhome, the performance claims “must be in President Buhari’s dream utopian world of fantasy, make-belief and ‘Ali Baba’s’ tales-by-the-moonlight. It is certainly not the Nigeria I live and work in. There exist grinding poverty, abject penury, dismay, hunger, thirst, helplessness and hopelessness.”

The human rights activist further noted that compared with the successive administrations of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; incumbent government fared poorly, stressing that it made Nigerians poorer than they were before 2015.

He continued: “Poverty has never been so grinding. Inflation has never been so high. Governance has never been so opaque. Corruption has never been so monumental. Insecurity has never been so ravaging. The economy has never been so parlous and recessionary. Innocent blood has never been so wantonly spilled. Nigerians are currently living in dire horrific circumstances of pains, pangs, sorrow, tears and blood. 2015 look like an eldorado. And the President is saying he has performed? This is the surest proof that President Buhari’s legendary disconnect with the people he presumably governs has reached unmanageable proportions.”

Uche Nwosu’s Arrest: No Single Individual Has Capacity To Finance Us — IPOB, Names Funding Sources

0

After many years of enquiry, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has finally revealed those that support and finance its activities.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB, averred that no single individual can sponsor the organisation.

The organisation headed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stated in its latest statement titled: “Abduction of Uche Nwosu has exposed masterminds of insecurity in Imo state”, that Nwosu’s incident on Sunday has again vindicated the group. This is another vindication that IPOB and Eastern Security Network (ESN) are not responsible for the numerous attacks, abductions/kidnappings in Imo State contrary to false accusations and propaganda”, “But God Almighty, Chukwu Okike Abiama, has exposed them this time around”, part of the statement read.

On sponsorship, the group said that: “For the umpteenth time, no single individual can sponsor IPOB. We are a global movement and millions of our family members home and abroad remain the source of our SPONSORSHIP.

“We have never hidden this fact because we are not a secret or terror organisation. IPOB is well grounded and we don’t need any Okorocha, Uche Nwosu or Hope Uzodinma or any politician for that matter to sponsor us. We have no dealings with corrupt politicians and people with questionable source of wealth”.

However, on the arrest of the Imo state 2019 governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, AA, Uche Nwosu at St Peter’s Anglican Church on Sunday, the group condemned the incident, saying that “It’s now transparently obvious to all who the masterminds of the abductions/ killings of many traditional rulers and religious leaders including politicians in Imo State and other parts of South East are.

“It is also now clear who created unknown gunmen to demonise and implicate IPOB and ESN operatives. God Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama who designed this fight for Biafra freedom and independence has always vindicated us and will continue to vindicate IPOB/ESN.”

Uche Nwosu Urges IGP To Investigate Who Ordered His Arrest, Owner Of Private Jet Used In Taking Him To Abuja

0

The 2019 Imo state governorship candidate, Uche Nwosu, on Tuesday demanded from the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba to investigate the owner of the private jet which was used to fly him (Nwosu) from Enugu to Abuja.

Nwosu made this demand in Owerri while narrating his experience of how he was arrested by security operatives at St Peter’s Anglican Church Eziama-Obiere in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo state, during the outing service of his late mother, Jemimah Nwosu, last Sunday.

He explained that he was taken to the tactical squad office in Abuja, where he was told by the police that, “Someone wrote a petition against me (Nwosu) that I was supplying arms to militants and giving them money.”

He added that there was no time that the police officially invited him to come to answer questions from the petition against him (Nwosu).

Narrating his ordeal Nwosu said: “The petition the Police said was from somebody, that their reason for arresting me was alleged that I was supplying arms to militants and giving them money, the whole plan was cooked up in Government House. The security men attached to the Government House one Shaba was behind this plot.

“The plot was to humiliate me and malign my image. No security man from the Abuja or state command came for that operation. Those security officers were all security men attached to the government of Imo state.

“Because a normal policeman cannot behave the way they did. They came shot inside the church which no professional police officers could do it. They shot anyhow. They are a killer squad from the government house.

“Nobody invited me or called me on phone I would have answered I did not receive any invitation from the police. So, just like that they came arrested me handled me like a criminal and treated me like I have committed any offence.

“I want the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to investigate the person who ordered for my arrest and the owner of the private jet and who paid for the private jet that took me from Enugu state to Abuja. They took me to the tactical squad office where the IG, now send somebody to come and interview me and I gave my statement, from what I gathered the IG, was not properly briefed on what was going on.”

However, the Imo state government through the Imo state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, has maintained that the government has no hand in the events that led to the arrest of Nwosu and that it was purely the activities of the security operatives, adding that they should wait for the outcome of the investigation of the police.

2023 Presidency: Senators Wabara, Abaribe Back Anyim

0

The 2023 presidential ambition of Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, gained momentum yesterday, as former Senate President and Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, Dr. Adolphus Wabara, has thrown his support behind the project.

Similarly, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has also canvassed support for the former Secretary to Government of the Federation, SGF, saying he is eminently qualified and intellectually endowed to fix Nigeria.

The duo who spoke at a grand civic reception for Senator Abaribe at Obingwa in Abia State where Anyim was a special guest, called on Ndigbo and Nigerians of all race and political divide to throw their lot with the former Senate President.

This is as the PDP candidate in the just-concluded governoship election in Anambra State, Val Ozigbo, has called for the inclusion of electronic voting in the Electoral Act.

Ozigbo who spoke with Vanguard during the reception, expressed disappointment over President Muhamnadu Buhari’s refusal to assent to the New Electoral Act.

He said that the hidden reason for the President’s action was the electronic transmission of election results included in the document and not the direct primaries as being cited by the Presidency.

Ozigbo who said electronic transmission of election results would drastically reduce falsification of election results, strongly advocated inclusion of electronic voting as a panacea to electoral fraud.

He argued that “if money could be electronically wired in Nigeria, why can’t we go beyond manual voting and adopt electronic voting as other democracies in the world?.

” The deployment of 34,000 police personnel to Anambra because of governoship election would not have been necessary if we adopt electronic voting”, he said.

Senator Wabara said Anyim had garnered the capacity, the requisite knowledge and national appeal to deliver as President.

According to Wabara, Anyim’s political antecedents and the prevailing peace and tremendous achievements that characterised his tenures both as the Senate President and SGF “leave no one in doubt that Nigeria needs a true and competent patriot like him to move forward”.

Senator Wabara urged Nigerians to give Anyim a chance to return Nigeria to the path of greatness.

Similarly, Senator Abaribe who extolled Anyim’s leadership qualities, his candor, political maturity and wealth of experience, described him as one of Igbo’s first eleven that has all it takes to rescue and calibrate Nigeria.

He solicited the support of all progressive Nigerians irrespective of their political leanings for Senator Anyim who he said is divinely endowed and strategically prepared to give Nigeria a new hope.

The event almost turned into a political carnival for Anyim and Abaribe as various speakers rooted for them to the admiration of the mammoth crowd.

Senator Anyim had during a remark commended the Ngwa nation for honouring Abaribe with the chieftaincy title of “Maduforo Nde Ngwa”, describing him as an irrepressible voice at the senate.

He said that Abaribe could be trusted with any higher responsibility while appluading him for standing firm for justice and equity.

Senator Anyim has since declared interest in the 2023 presidential race, saying he could be trusted for the political and multi-sectoral salvation of Nigeria.

Sen. Marafa’s Faction Of Zamfara APC Condemns Attack On PDP Congress Venue

0

The Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa-led faction of the All Progressives Congress APC in Zamfara state has condemned Monday’s violent attack on the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP Congress in Gusau, the state capital, distancing itself from it.

Chairman of the faction, Hon. Sirajo Garba Maikatako in a statement signed by the spokesperson, Bello Bakyasuwa Maradun said he received with shock the news of violence meted on the opposition PDP during the party’s congress, saying it was worrisome that PDP officials have accused elements of the state government as masterminds.

“We are more worried that official statements attributed to the spokesperson to the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State who is one of the leading figures of PDP in the state associated the action with the ruling APC in the state.

“Although the statement pointed the accusing finger at thugs mobilized by Governor Bello Matawalle’s camp of APC, we are using this medium to disassociate and distance the Senator Marafa-led faction of APC from this undemocratic act against opposition groups”, he stated.

He said it is in record that Senator Marafa is “an advocate of the rule of law and the principle of ‘live and let live’ from the testimonies of his uncountable public engagements as a Senator of the Republic of Nigeria and the leading figure of APC in Zamfara State”.

“On this note, the leadership of Senator Marafa faction of APC, condemns in totality the reported action against opposition PDP in the state and consider the action as barbaric, savage, desperate and primitive. We also call on the leadership of the police at State, Zonal and National levels to thoroughly investigate the matter and make the perpetrators and their sponsors face appropriate wrath of the law.

“We equally call on the police to use this incidence as a red flag and be on alert to avoid the occurrence of such cowardly act of desperate politicians without fear or favour.

“As democrats, we commend the conduct of the opposition PDP on the maturity exhibited in the face of violence and managing the situation. We also congratulate them on holding the congresses and emerging with the new party leadership in the state.

“Notwithstanding, we hope that the new leadership of PDP in the state will in due course understand the progressive ideals of APC especially the commitment of Senator Marafa of building bridges beyond party affiliations to rescue Zamfara State from the grip of insecurity”.

For Giving Him Opportunity To Be A Bus Conductor, Gov. Ortom Celebrates Former Boss Mnenge Mtemave

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Monday, celebrated his former boss, Mnenge Mtemave, and other contemporaries of Gboko Motor Park for marking a positive impact in his life when he worked as a conductor.

Ortom, in the spirit of the 2021 yuletide, also celebrated the driver’s colleagues at his residence in Ipav, Mbadim in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

The governor had worked as a motor conductor to Mtemave, who was a driver at the Gboko Motor Park in the late 1970s, and early 1980s while growing up in Gboko town after dropping out of primary school.

He recalled during the celebration, attended by his contemporaries, his former boss and their family members, that Mtemave invited him to work as a conductor and later taught him how to drive.

Ortom further noted that Mtemave later made him cashier and treasurer of all the monies they made weekly and gave him a blank cheque to spend at will, an opportunity he never took for granted but still went back to him to approve spending on his needs.

The governor said during his morning devotion, God revealed to him to visit, celebrate and appreciate his former boss, Mtemave for laying the foundation for him to be who he is today.

He, therefore, urged the people never to despise their little beginnings but to remain committed in their service to God, stressing that they should also seek formal education even at old age to brighten their fortunes.

Speaking for the Ugbada family and former colleagues, Messers Abugh Vaaswem and Aondopine Tim, thanked the governor for his good gesture and prayed God to prosper him.

The host, Mtemave, also expressed gratitude over the honour done him by the governor.

Buhari Rescued Nigeria From Collapse, Says Malami

0

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, has said President Muhammadu Buhari rescued Nigeria from collapse within the first year of his administration.

Malami said Buhari came at a time when the economy was about to collapse, which would have led to total collapse of the nation, but he rescued the situation within a short period of time.

The Minister, who stated this in a radio programme in Kano, said all sectors of economy suffered serious setback before coming of the president, and that state governments were also rescued through various disbursement of bailouts.

“President did this in less than one year; he rescued our economy from collapse. This is very rare as not all leaders can do this. Even the developed countries suffered much before they rescued situations like this.”

He said the president did not stop there but also introduced programmes such as N-power and COVID-19 interventions that provided employments opportunities to many Nigerians.

On insecurity, Malami said Buhari intervened in the North East and prevented Boko Haram terrorists from launching large-scale attacks, which were incessant during the past administration.

“Before Buhari came, there were so many challenges in the security sector, but now, we have succeeded in preventing the attacks. It’s been long that I heard about attack in markets, worship places and so on,” Malami said.

He added that the committed effort put together by the security operatives forced the bandits in the North West initiate reconciliatory move with the Federal Government.

Obasanjo Fires Back At Edwin Clark, Insists He Never Hated Niger Delta

0

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he had never shown anger or distraught to the Niger Delta region or any part of the country.

Obasanjo said this and more in response to Chief Edwin Clark’s accusation that he(Obasanjo’s) disdain and insincerity for the people of Niger Delta have not in any way reduced.

Clark, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ijaw National Congress, INC, had written an open letter to Obasanjo.

In it he said Obasanjo’s comments that the oil found in the Niger Delta does not belong to the people of the region represents his continuous arrogant stance and disposition against Niger Delta.

Obasanjo had, at a peace and security parley convened by the Global Peace Foundation and Vision Africa in Abuja, attacked the National Secretary of the INC, Ebipamowei Wodu.

However, replying in a letter dated December 28, Obasanjo said what Clark called an outburst is his(Obasanjo’s) way of getting people/listeners’ attention.

In the letter titled “My response to the open letter by Clark”, Obasanjo said: “Let me proceed with the most basic constitutional fact that you cannot have two entities in a sovereign State.”

He insisted that those who purchase crude from Nigeria enter into contractual relationship with Nigeria and not the Niger Delta.

He addressed the issue of hatred for the region: “I have never shown any anger, distraught with Niger Delta region nor any part of Nigeria.

“Some of the languages you have deployed to describe me in your letter are offensive, uncouth and I totally and completely rejected them.

“I am not inconsistent, hypocritical, unstatesman, and nor am I anybody’s lackey.

“You use your own yardstick to judge others. I hope you think and adjust. Negotiation achieves better results than dictation.”
