0

The Eze Ogo Akanu Ohafia, Ohafia L.G.A Abia State, His Royal Highness Eze Ogo Mba Okereke, has said the Igba Uche tradition of the people marks the retirement age from active community service for every indigine of the community.

In a chat with ABN TV recently during the Igba Uche for two age grades, Egwuala and Abiriba who are between the ages of 65 to 68, the traditional ruler thanked the age grades for the completion of the civic Centre in their community which marks their retirement project.

The project was initiated by Okome and Okezie age grades who took the project to a roofing level and handed over to Egwuala and Abiriba who eventually completed it before their retirement.

Describing the civic centre as befitting, he said said it will be ready for use upon the completion of fixing of internal fittings.

Eze Okereke said the civic centre has about 50 restrooms, 5000 capacity Hall, VIP lounge, offices for union, lock up shops, restaurants and others.

At the next Igba Uche which he said has tentatively been fixed to take place next two years, the civic centre will be fully completed and ready for use.

The Igba Uche traditional retirement is performed in every four year cycle but sometimes less.

The Royal Father said step into the age grade system begins with Igba Nnunu, which means shooting down a bird as a child to indicate that one is man enough.

Izara Afa stage comes after Igba Nnunu at about the age of 30 while Igba Ekpe is another stage of age grade which commences at 40.

He noted that the Igba Uche which is the traditional retirement from community service does not exclude retirees from participating in community development, adding that it only indicates that certain responsibilities are reserved for the younger age grades.

He urged various age grades to put unity of purpose and patriotism at the forefront as well as sacrifice to achieve good results.

He called on them to be their brothers’ keepers, saying they should factor each other’s economic strength in carrying out their projects.

Philanthropist and security expert, Sir Chikwe Udensi has handed over a newly completed primary and secondary school building to Anglican Church of Nigeria in his Aro-Okeigbo community in Arochukwu local government area of Abia State, ABN TV reports.

This is part of his contributions towards boosting education in the state.

The church expressed gratitude to Sir Chikwe Udensi, Interpol Systems Consultant for his humanitarian efforts and prayed God for continuous grace and protection on Sir Udensi.

The donor, Sir Udensi thanked the Church for its support and pledged to continue building a brighter future for the younger generation through quality education in his community.

Similarly, Sir Chikwe Udensi’s love and respect for traditional institution led him to the renovation of the Traditional council hall, the meeting hall of Arochukwu traditional leaders in a bid to help in preservation of culture and tourist sites which has a huge industry.

His foundation Build A New Abia, BANA in partnership with Rotary International has promised to continue putting smile on the faces of Abians across all local govt areas with the flag off his foundation’s palliative program.

Not long ago, Sir Udensi commissioned a newly reconstructed Aggrey Memorial College Assembly Hall (The ABNA Hall) in an effort to demonstrate his commitment towards revitalisation of educational system in the state.

We Have Lost 498 Troops In Ukraine – Russia

Russia said Wednesday that 498 Russian troops had been killed in Ukraine, its first announced death toll since President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of the country last week.

We Have Lost 498 Troops In Ukraine – Russia

“Four hundred and ninety-eight Russian servicemen have died in the line of duty,” defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement broadcast on state television, adding that “1,597 of our comrades have been wounded.”

Meanwhile, before the announcement, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations accused Russia of seeking to commit genocide in his country, speaking at a rare General Assembly debate on Wednesday, more than a week after Moscow’s invasion.

“They have come to deprive Ukraine of the very right to exist,” Sergiy Kyslytsya told the Assembly ahead of a vote on a resolution demanding Russia withdraw its forces from the eastern European country.

“It’s already clear that the goal of Russia is not an occupation only. It is genocide.”

Russia’s envoy Vassily Nebenzia, speaking shortly after, accused Ukraine of “rampant neo-Nazism” and the West of using “open and cynical threats” to persuade other countries at the UN to vote in favor of the resolution.

He said Russia only wants to stop a separatist conflict in Donbas, in eastern Ukraine.

A vote by the 193 members of the UN on whether to deplore the invasion and demand Russia’s withdrawal will follow shortly. The resolution needs a two-thirds threshold of those voting to pass.

The resolution, led by European countries with the support of Ukraine, is non-binding but would serve as a powerful rebuke of Moscow’s attack on Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Moscow has pleaded “self-defense” under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

But that has been roundly rejected by Western countries who accuse Moscow of violating Article 2 of the Charter, requiring UN members to refrain from the threat or use of force to resolve a crisis.

2023: PDP Will Have Greater Chances If Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Emerges As Presidential Candidate — Wike

0

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party stands a chance of winning the 2023 presidential election if his counterpart in Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, emerged the candidate of the party.

Wike lamented that Nigeria was in a serious crisis as a result of insecurity, stating that it was time for the Peoples Democratic Party to return to power and save the country.

The governor, who stated this while answering questions from journalists during a visit to Bauchi State on Saturday, said God would not forgive the PDP, if it failed to heed the yearnings of Nigerians to return to power.

He said, “One of my resolutions for the year 2022 is to make sure that Nigeria is better than what it was last year. It is also to make sure that the PDP is united because if the PDP makes the mistake of not listening to Nigerians, it will be very difficult for God to forgive the PDP.

“This is an opportunity to save Nigeria. We Christians know that when the Israelites were in problems, God had to bring Moses to lead them. Nigeria is in serious problems now and it is the PDP that will lead Nigeria out of these problems. So, we must take that responsibility. I’ll prefer that if God makes it that the ticket falls on him (Bala Mohammed), it means our chances are very, very bright.

“This insecurity, this is not the kind of Nigeria we want, it is not the Nigeria where every day you wake up in the morning, the newspaper says, ‘40 people have been killed…’ These deaths are caused by the inability of the so-called government to protect us.”

Wike described Mohammed as being more than qualified to become the next President of Nigeria. He noted that the antecedents and achievements of the Bauchi State governor in over two years in office showed that he could rule the country effectively.

He said, “My brother, Bala, has gathered a lot of experiences. He was a director in the ministry; he became a Senator, then a minister and now a governor. And with these alone, he is qualified to be president. Then, you’ll also look at what he is doing in Bauchi; look at his pedigree, as a first time governor. I was here to flag off projects, many of my colleagues were also here to do the same, how many first time governors do you see doing that?

“So, the call for him to become President is not misplaced at all. Bala is someone who is qualified to run for President of this country. He is overqualified. In any ramification you want to look at it from, his relationship with people is second to none, so people calling on him to run for President have seen the qualities in him.”

Mohammed described Wike as tough and the face of the PDP whom he looked up to as a leader.

He said, “Wike is always full of pleasant surprises and today’s visit has exhilarated a feeling in me that I have more than a brother in the Rivers State governor. I have always looked up to him. He is a leader not because he is a governor or because he has money, but the stuff he’s made up of.”

Lagos Commissioner Of Police, CP Odumosu Orders Arrest Of Estate Security Guards For Denying Him Entry

0

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered the arrest of private security guards at Brooks Estate, Magodo, Isheri for allegedly delaying and denying him entrance into the estate.

It was gathered that the police boss had gone to the estate in his convoy to meet a “strategic partner at a function” on Saturday when the incident happened.

A statement from the Lagos State Police Command clarified that the CP did not lock down the estate as speculated on social media.

In the statement titled, ‘Brooks estate not locked down by Lagos CP’, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, warned private security guards against disregard for police officers.

The statement read, “CP Hakeem Odumosu who was recently promoted to the enviable rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police due to his hard work and commitment to duty, visited the public Estate yesterday, January 1, 2022 to meet a strategic partner at a function after going round, visiting some places in the state to ensure the safety of Lagosians.

“The Commissioner of Police was accompanied by his armed security details and was driven in his official car bearing an official number plate and a pennant, including all the paraphernalia of office.

“On reaching the Estate gate, he was properly introduced notwithstanding the visible security details in uniform including a dispatch rider in his convoy, yet he was prevented from entering the Estate by some overzealous private security guards.

“All appeals to the security men to allow the CP to go to see someone at a function where an urgent matter bordering on security was to be discussed, fell on deaf ears even when they had foreknowledge of his coming.

“In spite of this deliberate humiliation, the senior police officer remained calm. When it became obvious that the security men were going overboard, the CP after about 30 minutes humiliation, ordered the arrest of four of the security men, leaving one.

“However, in order not to make the Estate porous, the Commissioner of Police immediately posted well-armed policemen at the gate to support the security man left behind.”

The PPRO subsequently accused residents of the estate of shutting down the estate.

He said, “A few minutes later, a female resident of the Estate later identified as Adebola Fatiregun who didn’t witness the incident but heard of it, stormed the gate in anger, inciting other residents against the Commissioner of Police and his aides. She was also arrested for inciting violence and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

“All those arrested were taken to the Isheri Police Division where they made statements. They were subsequently released a few minutes after, following the intervention of notable individuals.

“At no time did the Commissioner of Police shut or lock down the Estate. The police boss could not have done that for whatever reason, knowing that the Estate is a residential one.

“Some residents of the Estate in solidarity with the arrested security men, deliberately closed the gate, thereby creating a temporary gridlock. This they did after the CP had left, perhaps to blackmail him and make him release the security men.”

The police cautioned that police officers have freedom of movement and should not be stopping from accessing public places.

“It should be stated here that, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for freedom of movement. The police in particular are statutorily permitted to enter any public place at any time. The Brooks Estate is a public place and the roads leading into it are highways and as such, no one has the power to prevent police officers in uniform from entering the Estate or any such public places.

“The internal security arrangements of the estates and other public places nonetheless, the statutory powers of the police to have unfettered access to public places must be acknowledged and respected.

“Therefore, managements or authorities of estates in the state are advised to constantly brief their private security guards in this regard. Any restriction deliberately put in the way of the police in any of the estates will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with according to the law, just as the police will not condone any form of embarrassment and recklessness,” Ajisebutu added.

Umahi Maintaining EbubeAgu To Prosecute 2023 Election, PDP Kicks

0

THE Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday alleged that the South East Security outfit code-named Ebubeagu was established and maintained by the All Progressive Congress, APC-led government of Dave Umahi in Ebonyi for the sole reason of prosecuting the 2023 general election in the State.

The Party which further alleged that the security outfit was equally designed to “stampede the voices and activities of the opposition in the state” stressed that “the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi state will resist this evil plot to the fullest extent of our ability and the law.”

The State Chairman of the Party, Chief Tochukwu Okorie stated this in his New Year Message to Ebonyi people and Party faithful in the State.

According to him, “Following the expiration of the 14-Day ultimatum we earlier issued for the disbandment of the Ebubeagu terror organization, we have directed our legal team to immediately commence processes to challenge its existence and have them proscribed as a terror organization that it is.”

The message read in part: “We are disappointed in the continued empowerment of the murderous syndicate called Ebubeagu by the Ebonyi State Government. The menacing presence of this syndicate has continued to threaten the existence of the Ebonyi people and their economic drive.

“In our previous press statement, we frowned at the unbridled fertilization of this terror group by the state government which continues to empower them to act dastardly and brutally against the lives and property of our people and residents. We have records of Ebubeagu’s attacks on innocent lives and property of Ebonyi people and we wonder why relevant security agencies are doing nothing to curtail this development in order to avert what might transcend into a state of lawlessness in the state, moreover as the 2023 general elections draw close.

“Our investigations have revealed that this band of terrorists is being maintained for use by the APC state government of Ebonyi State to prosecute the 2023 elections and stampede the voices and activities of the opposition in the state. The People’ Democratic Party in Ebonyi state will resist this evil plot to the fullest extent of our ability and the law.

“Following the expiration of the 14-Day ultimatum we earlier issued for the disbandment of the Ebubeagu terror organization, we have directed our legal team to immediately commence processes to challenge its existence and have them proscribed as a terror organization that it is.

“Already we have written to relevant security agencies, bringing their attention to the nefarious activities of the state-sponsored terror group, and it is our hope that the agencies will rise to their responsibilities and bring the atrocious activities of Ebubeagu to an immediate halt.

“We condemn in strong terms the continued seizure of the December salaries of civil servants from the entire Ohaukwu LGA of the state over the crisis rocking a part of the LGA. There is absolutely no basis for seizing salaries of civil servants on account of insecurity in the area arising from failure of governance at the state level.

“We urge the state government to release the salaries and other benefits accruing to them without further delay and take responsibility for the cloud of insecurity that continues to hover over the entire state rather than making scapegoats of innocent civil servants. In the same vein, we empathize with these workers for the hunger strike the state government subjected them to in a season that should have everyone celebrating the goodness of God in their lives.

“We reiterate our concern over the continued missing of the NELAN engineers supervising construction works on the Abakaliki Ring Road Project – Effium axis. We urge the state government to up their efforts at finding them either alive or dead and make public the result of their investigations immediately in order to give closure to the grieving families of the victims.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the affected companies and families, assuring them that we will continue to lend our voice to the process of unravelling the mystery surrounding their sad disappearance.

“We have noticed that the Ebonyi State Government has stalled the recruitment exercise into the state’s civil service which it initiated in November 2021. We hope that this is in response to the position of the PDP that the exercise was an ambush against the incoming PDP led government in 2023. If that is the case, we commend the government for dropping the exercise.

“However, we will not hesitate to expose any underhand dealing that may be going on behind the scenes in respect of that exercise. The static motion of ongoing projects in the state is cause for concern to Ebonyi people and residents.

“We urge the governor to pursue the completion of the ongoing projects, stop initiating fresh ones as there’s not much time left for his administration before it gets embroiled in the 2023 election fever. Ebonyi people do not deserve to have abandoned projects littered in the state under the Umahi administration.

“We urge the government to pursue completion of the airport project, abandoned roads projects, community medical structures and others rather than play populist politics with economically senseless new projects.

” Finally, we wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the leaders of our great party in Ebonyi State for their steadfast efforts in giving direction to the party and positioning it to the enviable position it occupies today. We appreciate the National Assembly Caucus of the PDP in Ebonyi State ably led by Senator Dr Sam Egwu for providing Christmas and New Year largesse for party members at all levels, a gesture which re-enacted the creeds of the party in the consciousness of Ebonyi people and residents.

“We thank party members and those who joined us during the yuletide for choosing to be under the umbrella for a better tomorrow for Ebonyi State. As the executive committee of the party, we are poised to take the party to higher heights and prepare it for the business of 2023. PDP in Ebonyi State has always been a moving train and we’ll continue to position it towards the winning path

“As a child soldier, I fought the civil war, I went and came back and nothing happened to me. I must say God has been gracious. I have been honoured with Federal Government appointments, multiple times over.

“I have ran elections, I have won elections. Above all God gave me parents whose values and virtues are the reaso for who I am today. I felt I should honour them, particularly my father who was the first educated reverend minister from this community.

“I am also unveiling a foundation in his honour, Rev. U.U Maduekwe Foundation, specially devoted to bringing smiles to the faces of children of reverend ministers who have passed on, who are feeling challenged and of course we will also be involved with the gospel evangelism and providing infrastructural support to the church” he said.
