The 33rd Africa Cup of Nations kicked off on Sunday with hosts the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon securing a 2-1 comeback win against Burkina Faso in Group A.

In the same group Cape Verde also recorded opening day win after pipping Ethiopia 1-0.

The tournament continues on Monday with African heavyweights the Atlas Lions of Morocco taking on the Black Stars of Ghana in the standout fixture for the day.

With their rich history in African football, it is hard to believe that Morocco can only boast of just one AFCON title which was in 1976 in Ethiopia.

Since their triumph more than 45 years ago, they have featured in 15 editions without success.

The last time they came close to winning the title was in 2004 but fell to hosts Tunisia 2-1 in the final.

As for Ghana, who are four-time winners of the continental showpiece, they will hope to be lucky this time after years of heartbreaks.

The Black Stars last tasted success back in 1982 when they beat hosts Libya on penalties but have lost in three finals (1992, 2010, 2015).

Will these giants of African football eventually end their long wait for continental success? the 2021 AFCON which will end in February will tell.

Meanwhile, Morocco will go into today’s clash on the back of four wins and one loss in their last five games.

The only defeat was against reigning AFCON holders Algeria in the FIFA Arab Cup, where they lost on penalty shootout in the final last month.

And for Ghana, they managed three wins, one draw and one loss in their last five.

Also, their last game was a 3-0 loss to Algeria in a friendly on January 5th.

Ebonyi PDP Publicity Secretary Arrested By EbubeAgu Not Abducted — APC Chairman

0

The Ebonyi State Chairman, All Progressive Congress, APC and Security Consultant for EbubeAgu, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, Monday explained that the State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Publicity Secretary, Chika Nwoba was never abducted by Ebubeagu security outfit as being speculated by some “misinformed” persons in the State.

In a chat with Newsmen in Abakaliki, the APC Chieftain stressed that Chika Nwoba who had issues to answer as regards the propagation of fake news was merely arrested by Ebubeagu and handed over to the Police for further investigation.

“It is really unfortunate. I don’t like joining issues. The law provides that Ebubeagu can arrest and hand over to the Police. They have been seen do that on more than two occasions. This boy called Chika Nwoba has been on the list of those to come and answer for fake News.

“We all know that there’s a law on fake news in the State. Many others are facing similar charges in the State.

“Why would somebody say it is an abduction. Security operatives operate based on intel. And when the information got to them, they said they have seen him. There was an uprising in the location he was. Some say it was an abduction and not abduction.

“While a team of Ebubeagu was on patrol, they saw them. Chika Nwoba was there and he was picked. Knowing that he was a member of an opposition political party, Ebubeagu did their job professionally by arresting him and handing him over to the Police. The investigation on the matter continues.

“If there was no petition against him, he wouldn’t have been arrested but there was a petition already against him and that was why he was arrested.

“Ebubeagu handed him over to the Police. He was not taken to the Government House or any other place. The people they handed over to was a Police team on patrol and not that they (Ebubeagu) took him to the Police Station. The law will take its due cause.

“He will defend himself as to whether he is guilty or not. If there’s enough evidence against him on fake news, he will face the law. This incident happened less than 12 hours and people are already adding to the incident.”

On the allegation by the PDP that the State Government was operating a cell or torture Camp at the old Government House and Ebonyi Hotel, Abakaliki, the Security Consultant noted “You people should work around the Government House and find out if that is true. Find out if there’s anywhere they are holding people. Ebonyi Hotel is where we have so many churches operating therein. How can you be holding people there? The only thing is that the opposition will always talk.”

According to him, propagation of fake news and fake news itself was more dangerous than the activities of unknown gunmen operating within the South East region.

“Fake news and fake information are more dangerous than unknown gunmen because it is the information that you give to them (unknown gunmen) that spark them to do what they are doing. People should get themselves off fake news and information

“So, there was nothing like an abduction. He was duly arrested and handed over to the Police. It didn’t even take up to three minutes. Ebubeagu was professional in their conduct as they operated within the ambit of the law.”

Meanwhile, an eyewitness, Barr Ifeanyi Emmanuel Nworie, the Deputy Chairman of PDP Ebonyi State, stated that the intervention of the police was what made the abductors release the victim.

“I was driving along Abakaliki-Enugu expressway and took a branch to speedway filling station and saw a Siena car drove by one of the abductors (names withheld) who came close to my car and later went back to his branded Siena car and thereafter, I never knew the said Siena car was following us and double-crossed us at water reservoir along with Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway and every effort to bye-pass nor reverse my car proved abortive and thereafter, called his cohorts who came with his dreaded bandits and shot sporadically into the air with their pump-action rifle.

“They beat Chika Nwoba, the publicity Secretary of my party PDP to the point of death and further threw him into the boot of the said Siena car and I quickly called police from Anti kidnapping department of Ebonyi state police headquarters who came and these dreaded bandits refused to release Chika Nwoba to the police and told the police before me that they were instructed by their boss to do same.

“I raised alarm before the police that should if anything happens to Chika Nwoba, they will be held responsible. Police at this juncture threatened to open fire on the said Siena should they move the vehicle where Chika Nwoba had been hidden inside the boot.

“While they were torturing Chika Nwoba, his phone fell down and one of the abductors picked the phone and I requested the phone be given to me and he threatened that if I say it again, they will unleash the demons in them on me.

“The intervention of the police was why Chika Nwoba was brought out from the boot of the Siena bus and till now Chika has been in detention not minding the injury and assault meted out on him.”

Also, the State PDP Chairman, Chief Tochukwu Okorie has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba to order the arrest of all those involved in Nwoba’s torture and manhandling.

“I think they want to make his matter unbailable. I want the world to know about it; Nwoba has done nothing wrong to deserve this type of torture.

“I want the IGP to immediately order the arrest of all those involved in Nwoba’s torture and manhandling. “

“I think that is my own greatest strength as an individual and in terms of football terms.”

“I think my strength is helping my teammates, and when I do all those dirty jobs and all those things, that is when my own finishing aspect will come into play.”

Preparations for the competition have not been the best due to the failure of European clubs to release players on time.

Awoniyi however believes the Super Eagles will do well in the competition.

“When it comes to football, you can’t just get on the pitch and believe that you’ll perform miracles,” Awoniyi stated.

“It’s all about what you have done before, and that is what will reciprocate in gameday.”

“But looking at the short moment and short time for most countries, I think everyone is aware of it already, and this is where our athleticism would come in.”

“As a player, this is when the experience, the maturity should set in from each individual this is my own belief as a person.”

“At the same time, there should be preparation, but now we know that the preparation is not there, but we still have little time to put things together, which is now, tomorrow and before the first game.”

“And I think it is still a little bit better than having nothing at all.”

Resumption: Dowen College Awaits Lagos State Government Directive

0

Following controversies surrounding the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lagos, the Advisory Board of the school has stated that it is awaiting a directive from the Lagos State government before it announces its resumption date.

A member of the Advisory Board of Dowen Schools, Folarin Shobo, said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, on Monday.

In response to a question on resumption, Shobo said, “The government is keenly interested in the case, so we are bound by the decision of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, the supervisory ministry. We are waiting for them to do the needful.”

Shobo also noted that the advisory board has reviewed all the incidents and records of the case, and is mourning the unfortunate loss of their student.

“We are not here to argue with the family, we are also mourning. The school, his teachers and his classmates are all mourning the loss of a bright young man. He was a boy that was full of great potential,” he said.

Shobo urged members of the public to engage the Oromoni case solely on the facts instead of what he described as “emotions” and “sentiments”.

He referred to the official autopsy reports presented by medical experts in Lagos and Warri, which the Nigerian Police Force has also engaged as “scientific evidence” to the case.

Meanwhile, the advisory board member asserted that the school management followed laid down rules by informing Oromoni’s parents of his health complaints in the clinic and handing him over to his guardian who reportedly took him to Warri by road.

“Anything could have happened on the road, but we handed him over to his guardian (not his father).

When engaging the moderators on the related case of bullying, Shobo further asserted that “it is one of the cardinal rules of Dowen. We don’t condone bullying. Once there is a report, the bully will be dismissed from the school, but as at the time the boy left the school, bullying was not at play.”

The advisory board member lamented that the case seemed to have cast a blemish on all the great contributions the school had invested in the nation.

“The school does not condone any immoral infraction. The school is 25 years old, and it has raised generations for this nation,” he said.

The Lagos State government directed all secondary schools to resume on January 3 and 4, 2022.

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has also taken steps to sanction schools that have refused to comply with the directive.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Sunday, said the suspect was arrested following a distress call received by the Onipanu Divisional Police Officer.

He explained that the police were told that the deceased, who had been suspecting Udoh of going out with his wife, confronted him.

The police spokesman said the accusation led to a fight between the two men.

While the fight was on, the suspect, a commercial driver, allegedly brought out a knife and stabbed the victim several times in his back and chest, following which Umonko collapsed.

Oyeyemi said, “Upon the distress call, the DPO, Onipanu division, CSP Bamidele Job, quickly detailed his men to the scene, where the suspect was promptly arrested, and the knife recovered as an exhibit.

“The victim, a welder, was rushed to the state hospital, Ota, but was unfortunately pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

Army Denies Killing Of Soldiers During A Gun Battle Over Gold In Katsina

0

The Nigeria Army on Sunday said none of its soldiers was killed during any gun battle stemming from a disagreement over gold nuggets in Magama Village in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.

In a statement, army spokesman, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, urged members of the public to disregard reports suggesting that two soldiers and seven miners were killed during a gun duel arising from rifts over gold.

General Onyema described the publications as “baseless, unfounded, untrue and a mere figment of the writer’s imagination, aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Nigerian Army”.

He stressed that no Nigerian soldier was killed nor involved in any skirmish with illegal miners in Magama village on January 5 as was reported.

Reports had claimed that the incident occurred when the soldiers turned down an initially agreed offer of N500,000 per pit from the miners, but afterward, turned around to demand more money on discovering the large quantum of gold nuggets found by the illegal miners in one of the pits.

However, General Onyema while debunking the reports said the troops deployed in the North West were committed and engrossed in the fight against banditry and other criminalities bedevilling the region.

He added that soldiers deployed to fight insurgents were never permitted to participate in any form of mining, whether legitimate or illegitimate.

“This is certainly not what the troops require at this critical time,” he said. “We assure the general public of the unrelenting commitment of our troops to decisively tackling the banditry menace in the North West.”
