Nigeria Lifts Ban On Twitter

The Federal Government has lifted the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria after approval by President Muhammadu Buhari

The decision was announced by the Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE.

Kashifu, in a statement in Abuja, said the approval was given following a memo written to the President by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.

He said: “The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022.

“The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.

“In the Memo, the Minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation.”

Rep. Onuigbo Reels Out Achievements, Says He Has Trained Youths, Women On Empowerment, Attracted Numerous Projects — Rep Sam Onuigbo

Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency, has expressed gratitude with the efforts he has put in place in serving his constituents since 2015 when he was elected into office as a member of House of Representatives.

At a media briefing on Wednesday, the federal lawmaker said even though the primary assignment of a member of the legislative arm is lawmaking and oversight function, he has attracted numerous projects as the nature of the Nigerian society demands.

He listed the training of 1,500 women and youths from Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency on how to start and manage small businesses by the Border Communities Development Commission which was followed by provision of stipends, training of select women and youths from Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency on fashion designing by the Industrial Trust Fund, training of mechanics in their workshops at Mgbuka, Ohiya Mechanic Village, by the National Automation Council and others as his achievements.

“Some of the key empowerment and infrastructural development projects that I have attracted to the constituency are:Rehabilitation of the failed sections of the Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene federal road in 2017.

“The ongoing total reconstruction of the Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene federal road.

“Training of select youths from Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency on Solar Panels installation, POP and painting, and web design by the Industrial Trust Fund.

“Training of select women and youths from Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency on fish farming by the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Lagos.

“Training and empowerment of 100 men and women with galvanized battery cages, point of lay birds, bags of feed and start-up funds in February 2021.

‘Empowerment of additional 100 youths and women with galvanized battery cages, point of lay birds, bags of feed, and start-up funds in May 2021.

“Training and empowerment of 100 graduates from Ikwuano/Umuahia North/ Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Arts and Culture.

“Training and empowerment of 50 youths from Ibere in Ikwuano Local Government Area.

“Empowerment of constituents with several equipment/materials to enable them source for a living. These include the distribution of motorcycles, grinding machines, sewing machines, to hundreds of constituents.

“Construction of school blocks at Ekebedi, in Oboro, Ikwuano LGA; Old Umuahia in Umuahia South LGA; a block of two classrooms at Adanma Girls Secondary School, Afugiri, Umuahia North LGA; a block of two classrooms at Umutowe Central School, Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA; a block of three classrooms at Nsirimo, Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA; a block of classrooms at Umulu Ibere, Ikwuano LGA; a block of three classrooms at Umuajata Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA.

” Construction and renovation of Health Centres in Oloko and Obuohia Obi-Ibere.

“Provision of educational materials for students and purchase of WAEC and JAMB forms.

“Printing and distribution of past SSCE/NECO/GCE Questions and Answers (1998-2019) on English and Mathematics to students and candidates from secondary schools in my constituency.

“Water projects in Obunta Oboro Ikwuano LGA, Inyila Ibere, Ikwuano LGA, Avonkwu Ibeku, Umuahia North, and Obuohia Ibere, Ikwuano LGA.

“Empowerment of 250 farmers on the 24th of April, 2017 with fertilizers, coveralls, knapsack sprayers, pesticides, etc.

“Donation of Office equipment to Pacesetter FM, Umuahia after the fire outbreak incident.

“Provision of a Generating Plant for NTA Umuahia.

“Donation of a modern and powerful Sony camera set and other accessories to the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA) to support their digitization efforts.

“Erosion control works at Amankwo Ezeleke, Umuopara, in Umuahia South LGA, and at Okwe Oboro, in Ikwuano LGA. Both projects cost the Federal Government about N750million.

“Construction of a Skills Acquisition Centre at the headquarters of the Umuahia South Local Government Area, in Apumiri, Ubakala.

“Electricity projects in Obuohia Obi-Ibere, Umuezeala Obonipa in Usaka Ukwu, and donation of transformers to the following: Ndoro Oboro, Agbama Olokoro, World Bank Housing Estate Umuahia, Nnono Oboro, Landlord Association of Umudike, Maryrose Umudike, Ameke Junction, Umuagu-ngolori, Isi Court Old Umuahia.

“Medical Outreach in March 2018 where over 400 participants benefited from the free medical and counseling carried out by the medical practitioners. Also, following the outbreak of the Coronavirus, PPEs such as, tap-buckets, hand sanitizers, and liquid soaps, were provided for my constituents in line with the stipulations of the World Health Organization’s preventive manual.

“Construction of the Elemaga-Itunta mini-bridge in Ibere, Ikwuano LGA. Installation of streetlights at Obuohia Obi-Ibere and Ndoro Oboro, Ikwuano LGA.Reconstruction of the Ngwugwo valley embankment.

“Construction of drainage at Iyibom along the Okwe-Obuohia road. Construction of Obuohia-Nkari Bridge (Ongoing). Erosion Control and construction of rural road in Umuecheokwu,Umuovo, Old Umuahia, Umuahia South LGA (Ongoing).

“Construction of a market at Obuohia Obi-Ibere in Ikwuano LGA. Construction of a block of six classrooms at Amaoba, Ikwuano LGA.”

Former Governor of Abia State and Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has described the Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan as a patriotic statesman and compassionate politician.

Kalu while acknowledging the contributions of the Senate President to the growth and development of Nigeria, stressed that the celebrant is a strong advocate of democracy.

The Senate Chief Whip extended his greetings to family, friends, and political associates of the Senate President, adding that the celebrant has consistently demonstrated selflessness, patriotism, and generosity in all his endeavours.

In a goodwill message, Kalu prayed for longer life for the celebrant, noting that the Senate President deserves commendation for complementing the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in repositioning the country.

US Consulate Trains Abia Media Practitioners On Fact Checking

All is now set for the training of media practitioners in Abia State on methods and tools used in checking facts before publications.

Speaking with ABN TV on Wednesday, the lead trainer of the US Consulate project on fact-checking and former Zonal Director of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Ken Ike Okere said the training is scheduled to commence on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at the facility of Flo FM in Umuahia.

He noted that fake news and misinformation has become a challenge in the country and across the globe.

He noted that fake news and misinformation has been predicted to have capacity to lead to a Third World War.

Mr. Okere further highlighted Nigeria is in a state of crisis where the single most emergency problem facing the country is fake news.

He said trainees will be taught how to detect video and photos manipulation, differences between facts and opinions, what malinformation is, misinformation, disinformation as well as their practical examples.

According to the lead trainer, participants will be taught steps to follow in fact-checking a story.

“The climax of it all is sharing about seven to ten tools one can use in fact-checking a story, video or photo, to determine whether or not it is original, whether they have been used before, where they were used, what stories they were used for,” he said.

He said media literacy training is important to detect fake news.

The former FRCN Zonal Director said the training will cover at least 17 states of the country.

“We Gave Super Eagles Too Much Respect” – El Shennawy

Egypt national team goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy says the Pharoahs gave the Super Eagles too much respect in Tuesday’s AFCON 2021 Group D opener.

The seven-time African champions got off to a poor start after losing 1-0 to the Eagles in what looked like a one-sided game.

The Eagles had a comfortable game, controlling the rhythm the way they preferred, the score gap could have increased if not for El-Shennawy’s courageous display.

Many put the blame on the national team head coach Carlos Queiroz who played multiple key players out of their position, including Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Mohamed and Trezeguet.

However, El-Shennawy believes the blame should be on everyone, stating that it’s a team game and all should be responsible.

“The result is disappointing, to the players, coaching staff, and to the fans,” El-Shennawy said.

“During the first half we couldn’t rise up to the occasion, but the second half saw some improvement as we wasted a few chances.

“We had a lot of respect for Nigeria, but that backfired on us, being too focused on defense was the reason we conceded the goal.

“We’ll focus on the future now, we only played one game of the tournament.

“Everyone is to blame, we made mistakes and it wasn’t our lucky day, but we promise you improvement in the future.”

The defeat marked Egypt’s first AFCON opener one since 2002 when they lost to Senegal 1-0 and their first group-stage defeat when they fell against Algeria in Tunisia.

Former Nigeria midfielder, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, has said Moses Simon should have been named Man of the Match against Egypt.

Simon was in imperious form for the Super Eagles as they beat the Pharaohs 1-0 in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations opening fixture on Tuesday.

The Nantes winger dribbled past players on the right flank and created chances for his teammates.

It was one of such forrays that led to Kelechi Iheanacho’s winner in the 30th minute.

Iheanacho was however named Man of the Match by the organizers.

Allen Onyema, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, has gifted the Super Eagles N10 million for defeating the Pharaohs of Egypt in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking with the team at halftime in their opening game on Tuesday, Onyema, who expressed optimism that the team would make Nigerians proud, pledged to gift them N50 million if they win the trophy.

According to him, over 200 million Nigerians are looking up to the players for victory at the end of the game, stressing that they have no excuse to disappoint the expectations of all citizens.

He called on the players to use the opportunity to play their parts in uniting the nation by endeavoring to win the trophy.

He said, “Nigerians believe in what you can do, you have the strength and all it takes to win the trophy. Remember what I told you during the qualifying series.
