Others Like Nnamdi Kanu Got Amnesty, We Prefer Political Solution – Ohaneze

0

George Obiozor, president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, says the federal government should adopt a political solution on the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony instituted against him by the federal government.

In November 2021, south-east traditional and religious leaders had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to grant amnesty to Kanu to deescalate tension in the zone.

But Buhari, in a recent interview, had said he cannot release Kanu, adding that the IPOB leader should defend himself in court.

Asked to respond to Buhari’s recent comment on Kanu, Obiozor, in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, said a political solution is possible since militants in the south-south and repentant Boko Haram members have been offered amnesty.

“We in Igboland have made it categorically clear that we prefer a political solution to it — a dialogue to end it. It is clear to the rest of Nigeria,” he said.

“And we have repeatedly said that the Igbo nation is not at war with Nigeria. Therefore, what is happening can be handled. I will use the words ‘political solution’ as the answer. Dialogue is the answer.

“Just as other sections of Nigeria, some areas of Nigeria, people who behaved like Kanu have been forgiven, given amnesty and integrated into the country.

“So, what we are asking is for Mr President to use the prerogative of mercy to look into the situation in the south-east.

“Prerogative of mercy is exclusively the right of the president. We are not talking about the court. We are not talking about the use of force. The use of force is dangerous for everybody and it will definitely not solve the problem. It will make it worse.

“We are not new to Nigeria’s politics. We saw in south-south — Niger Delta Avengers, MEND — and the rest, even the present Boko Haram, those who said they are repenting, how they are being rehabilitated.

“The problem of federalism is that the sensitivity is very much on the surface. If you don’t do one as you have done others, you will have a problem.”

NDLEA Grills Obi Cubans Over Alleged Drug Links

0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday grilled socialite, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, for his alleged link to the illegal narcotic business, The PUNCH has learnt.

The PUNCH reports that Iyiegbu, who is the Chairman, Cubana group of companies, was grilled for about five hours at the Abuja headquarters of the NDLEA before he was granted bail and asked to return at a future date.

Impeccable sources told our correspondent that suspicious payments were made into Cubana’s account by three convicted drug dealers from Malaysia, Nigeria and India.

Operatives of the NDLEA and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have now widened the probe into Cubana and his business network based on the premise that he may be involved in the drug business.

Obi Cubana arrived at the NDLEA office around 9am and responded to questions for some hours before he was granted bail at 2pm. There are suspicions that he may be a drug kingpin. Some convicted drug dealers paid funds into his account.

“We have been able to establish three of such payments. One of the persons that paid money into his account was convicted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; another one that was convicted in New Delhi, India; also paid money into his account while a third person that was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and convicted in 2017, also paid money into Cubana’s account,” said a source.

The socialite was allowed to go home in order to get some documents which would be presented to the NDLEA.

Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested one Bolarinwa Oluwasegun, a fake Army General, for an alleged N270m fraud.

The suspect, who posed as a General in the Nigerian Army, allegedly made false representations to the complainant, Kodef Clearing Resources, that the President, Muhammadu Buhari, had shortlisted him and one other to be appointed as the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, and that he needed a short grant “to press and process the appointment.”

He also allegedly forged a letter of appointment as COAS purportedly signed by the President and showed the same to the victim to further prove his claim.

In the said letter, he claimed that he needed to pay a certain amount of money into the coffers of the Federal Government of Nigeria, as part of the requirements for the appointment as COAS.

Oluwasegun, in his bid to defraud the victim, also allegedly forged several documents and the signature of the President.

He was arrested at his house in the Alagbado area of Lagos State on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.

Upon his arrest, six pump action guns, three cartridge bullets, a swagger stick and several forged documents were recovered from him.

The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigations have been concluded.

Ebonyi Will Never Be Part Of Biafra – Umahi

0

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has said the state will never be part of Biafra.

This is as the governor stressed that the state was better in a fair and equitable Nigeria, reiterating that “if anybody tells you about Biafra, Ebonyi State will never be part of Biafra”.

Umahi stated this at the Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, on Thursday, during a reception organised for him after declaring his presidential bid, in Abuja.

According to the governor, “Let nobody be afraid of the Presidency of an Igbo man. The Igbo man is a builder and not a destroyer. There is no Igbo man that will be the President of this country and would like to divide or destroy it because we have investments everywhere.

“First and foremost, I have been saying it. If anybody tells you about Biafra, Ebonyi State will never be part of Biafra. We are not Biafra.

“We have so oppressed and now we are finding our feet and you want us to go back. We will not. We will not.

President Muhammadu Buhari (L) and the APC Chieftain Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during their meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday (10/1/2022)00130/10/1/2022/Callistus Ewelike/NAN

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos state governor and national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Villa where he informed him of his intention to contest the presidential election in 2023. Shortly after the meeting, he fielded questions from journalists on his mission and other issues of national importance. TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI who monitored the session brings the excerpts:

Could you please tell us the reason why you are here (Aso Villa)?

I will not answer that question when I have not lost my citizenship. I came to see the President on general issues concerning Nigeria, including our political party, APC, security issues, the achievement and the New Year Agenda. That’s all I can tell you. The new strategy that we must have party Congresses and all that.

President Buhari recently said he does not want to divulge his favourite for the APC 2023 presidential ticket. Nigerians will like to know, have you informed your President because they are urging you to come out and contest. Have you informed him about your ambition?

I answer that with categorical yes. I have informed the President of my intention but I have not informed Nigerians yet. I’m still consulting. And I have no problem consulting. And I’ve not set a parameter of limitation to the extent of how many people will I consult. You will soon hear, all you want to hear is the categorical declaration. You’ve gotten that truth from me that I have informed Mr. President of my ambition, and you don’t expect more answers than that.

What was his response?

That’s our business. He is a democrat. He didn’t ask me to stop. He didn’t ask me not to attempt and pursue my ambition,. It is a lifelong ambition. So, why do I expect him to say more than that? You are running a democratic dispensation, and you must adopt the principles and the values and the virtues of democracy. That’s it.

We have seen a number of support groups, drumming up support for your ambition, that of Vice President Osinbajo and Governor of Kogi State too. What’s your perspective of this? How do you see a potential race between you and this other persons for the APC ticket?

I don’t want to discuss individuals now. I must discuss myself. I have the confidence, the vision, the capacity to rule, build on the foundation of Mr. President, and turn Nigeria better. I have done that with commitment and unyielding you know, in Lagos State. You have seen that experience and the capacity to turn things around and that is what we are doing. You know, the confusion, the drift of the past in PDP is being corrected. And you can’t take away from that. As we are today, go back to the data on how many barrels of oil were we producing when we first came in and what it is today. We cannot even at the time we came in we did not pay the counterpart funds to start our rail line. Today you enjoy the comfort of having rail from Lagos to Ibadan, you have the Kaduna and you have the one for Kano State on the aggressive pipeline, you see excellent infrastructure. I just came from Azare and I have seen good roads, the carnage of dying on motor vehicles is reducing except you know, lack of compliance with a lot of Nigerian drivers and VIOs. Let us think back, let us be intellectually inquisitive as to the past and the present and what the future holds for Nigeria.

As Nigeria’s President, what do we hope to see?

You want my manifesto now? Not yet. Not yet.

I would like you to speak on the direct primaries and the convention. And secondly, what would be your response to those that say, the cap of being a kingmaker fits you more than you throwing yourself into the ring, you should remain a kingmaker?

First of all, the National Assembly and the president must be encouraged to review and review again. Whatever they come up with as electoral amendment is what we must comply with. There is no unlimited elasticity in what we face, because we have to plan and plan well, and be able to manage the time effectively. The great roadmap to success is ability of a leader to do what he must do at the right time that it should be done. So that to me, the electoral amendment point we will still look at that collectively. And it is our country. It’s our democracy. We had adopted it and we will push it rigorously.

About the cap of kingmaker. I’ve never seen the cap of a kingmaker before. That is the truth. And I’ve never seen where it is written in the rule book anywhere in any country that a kingmaker cannot be a king unless you commit murder. So, whatever is your attribute is your own opinion. Me, I want to pursue my ambition without the title of a kingmaker. You can write your literature and your story based upon your own perception.

Convention, it is certain that we are going to get it.

When? Next month?

Oh, well. I’m not a spokesperson for the party. And the President is the leader of the party. So, expect convention, maybe if that is added to your own anxiety, or the other party’s anxiety is good for us. We get it and we’ll get it done.

0

Policemen at Sabo division of the Lagos State Police Command are on the trail of a barber identified simply as Keke, who allegedly stabbed his neighbor to death, Monday night, in Iwaya area of Lagos, on the allegation that the deceased was making advances at his pregnant wife.

The Barber who resides at 3 Akintola street, Iwaya, returned home from his shop about 10.30 pm, only to be informed by a neighbor with an undisclosed identity that another neighbor, Daniel Adeitan, was admiring his pregnant wife.

Residents who spoke with Vanguard said the barber, rushed into his one-room apartment, came out with a kitchen knife and headed for the accused’s apartment.

On sighting Keke with the knife, the accused, 22-year-old Adeitan , who was eating in front of his room, hurriedly ran inside. But before he could lock the door, the barber had gained access.

He allegedly stabbed Adeitan in the chest and abandoned him in the pool of his blood.

One of the residents , Mr Nmadu Ndubuisi, told Vanguard that “ When Keke rushed into Adeitan’s room, Daniel’s pregnant sister pleaded with him to hear her brother out , that it was a mere allegation. He shoved her aside and made for his target.

“ She raised the alarm that alerted other tenants. By the time we rushed there, Adeitan could not talk. He had the looks of someone begging for help. He only stretched his hand to us, apparently begging to be taken to the hospital”.

On realizing the magnitude of his deed, Keke fled with his pregnant wife.

Other tenants also took to their heels for fear of being arrested by the Police. They were yet to return at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Dele Momodu Declares Interest For 2023 Presidency

0

Otunba Dele Momodu has declared his interest to run for president under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The media mogul indicated his interest while handing a letter of interest to the PDP National Chairman at the patty’s secretariat in Abuja.

Handing his letter to the national chairman of the party, Iyiorchia Ayu, Momodu said his move was to put an end to speculations in the public space over his interest.

After a closed-door meeting with the PDP Chairman, Momodu told newsmen that his decision to offer himself for the Presidency came after due deliberation with his family, stakeholders and mentors.

He said now is the time for full reconciliation and forgiveness among Nigerians and an opportunity to seek closure for the country’s ugly past.

”Nigeria urgently requires a reset and a total redirection. With this letter, Sir, I wish to humbly put the speculations to rest by coming to you with every sense of purpose and responsibility.

”I hasten to add that this is my personal decision, although I have received advice, encouragement and support from diverse quarters since I started my consultations.

”I urge the Party not to consider picking its candidate based on the usual considerations which had spectacularly failed our country in the past. The mood of the teeming youths, and indeed every patriotic Nigerian, who we need to come out en masse to vote for our party, aligns with this view.

”I invite our great party, PDP, to accept that it must search for a veritable flag bearer with the requisite leadership and visionary qualities that Nigerians now earnestly yearn for.

”I’m convinced that the time has come to seriously challenge and dislodge those politicians who have held our country to ransom by kidnapping, hijacking and destroying the future of our younger generation and generations yet unborn.

”I’m better prepared now than at the time of my first foray into the fray in 2011, and I am fully ready and certainly capable for the onerous tasks and responsibilities ahead”.

Momodu, however, warned that he will not accept any form of harassment or bullying from richer politicians in the course of the race.

I wish to place on record my firm promise and commitment not to be harassed, bullied or intimidated by anyone who feels he or she can buy the whole of Nigeria with loads of cash fraudulently and illegally filched and taken from the Nigerian people.”

”Nigeria deserves much better than where we are now, and my appeal to fellow Nigerians is that we should collectively rescue our dear country from the suffocating claws of slave masters, overlords and tyrants. I vociferously and vehemently reject any suggestion that Nigeria should continue to tread this dangerous path”.

AFCON 2021: “How Super Eagles Should Approach Game Against Sudan” –Aghahowa

0

Former Nigeria international Julius Aghahowa has advised the Super Eagles to approach their second 2021 AFCON group game against Sudan exactly the way they did against Egypt.

The Eagles were impressive in their opening game against Egypt and deservedly won 1-0 thanks to a Kelechi Iheanacho’s wonder strike.

They will now take on Sudan in their next fixture on Saturday and will be guaranteed qualification into the knockout stage of they win.

And Aghahowa, speaking on ‘No Holds Barred’ on Brila FM, urged the players to adopt the same approach which saw them outclass the Egyptians.

“The game against Sudan is not going to be a walk over, let everybody know that,” the AFCON 2000 silver medal winner said. ” Every team at this tournament have come to fight for themselves because this is the biggest stage in Africa to showcase what you can do and everybody will fight to the end.

“So I will advice the Eagles to approach the game the same way they approach the game against Egypt and with that way we are assured of victory. If they play the way they did the last time I am predicting 2-0 to Nigeria.”
