Shoot Any Prison Attacker Dead, Aregbesola Charges Prison Officers

0

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Monday, ordered prisons officers to shoot dead anybody who attempts to attack any correctional centre in the country.

The minister gave this order while inspecting the facility at the Agodi Custodial Centre, Ibadan.

He said the officer must make it impossible for anyone to penetrate the facility because it is a red zone.

Aregbesola said any attack on any correctional centre is an attack on the state and such must never be allowed again.

The minister said any attempt to attack correctional centres should be a suicide attempt and perpetrators must not be allowed to live to tell the story.

He said, “The most important thing is the security impregnability of this facility. Make this facility impregnable.

“It is a red zone, a danger zone. Whoever attempts to breach the security here is already dead. He must not live to tell the story. Other people will tell his or her story.

“Any effort to breach our facility is not acceptable. Don’t shoot to injure, shoot to kill. Don’t shoot to disable, shoot to kill.

“This is a total embodiment of the state to guarantee the security of the people.

“We will do our best regarding your welfare to ensure effective service. I must commend your work for not recording any case of COVID-19 in your facility.

“But most importantly, you must be effective in preventing the penetration of this facility. You must have the capacity to repel viciously any attempt to penetrate this facility.”

Aregbesola at a recent Ministerial Press Briefing at the Aso Villa, 4,860 inmates of the Nigerian correctional centres have escaped from those facilities between 2020 and 2021 alone following successful jailbreaks in Benin, Owerri, and Oyo, among others.

Also, only 954 of that number have been rearrested. That was before the recent jailbreak at the Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre, which resulted in 9 fatalities and the escape of 252 inmates. The 252 on the loose are apart from the 10 rearrested

Real Madrid Preparing £292m Package To Sign Both Haaland And Mbappe

0

Spanish giant, Real Madrid are reportedly preparing a financial package worth £292million to secure the services of both Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

The Spanish side, who have been long-term admirers of the footballers, are eager to close a deal with the duo ahead of the 2022-2023 season. They are developing a package that will cover each player’s transfer fees, wages, and agent’s commission.

According to Marca, Real Madrid are trying to secure a deal with Haaland and Mbappe as soon as possible given the vast amount of interest in their services.

Haaland has scored an astonishing 78 goals in 77 games in all competitions for Dortmund since moving to the Bundesliga in January from RB Salzburg in 2020.

His goalscoring return has made him one of European football’s hottest footballers, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and City all linked with the Dortmund striker in the past 18 months.

On Friday, Haaland acknowledged that he would make a decision on his future soon.

Haaland said: ‘They have started to put a lot of pressure on me and I have to accept that. I have chosen not to say anything out of respect for the club and the fans.

‘But now that a lot of pressure is coming from the club, it is the time to get things started. It means things will happen now.

‘I have said from the beginning I want to focus on football because that’s when I am at my best. Not when other things come into my mind.

Asked when he expected to come to a decision, the Norwegian replied: ‘Not now because we’re in the middle of a difficult period with a lot of games. All I want to do is to play football, but I can’t do that now. ‘

Meanwhile, Mbappe has been linked with a move away from Paris Saint-Germain due to his deal expiry this summer.

Reports suggested he was pushing for a departure last summer, but PSG are determined to keep him and are even said to have turned down a £134million bid from Real Madrid.

The Ligue 1 side valued the France World Cup winner at closer to £175million, deterring Los Blancos from making another offer with his contract up at the end of June.

Nigeria’s Debt Stock Hits ₦39.6 Trillion In 11 Months

0

Nigeria’s total debt stock rose from N32.9tn as of December 2020 to N39.6tn in November 2021.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, in her presentation of the 2022 approved budget, disclosed that the government borrowed N6.7tn between January and November 2021, according to a copy of the presentation obtained by our correspondent.

The new borrowing in the period under review consists of N5.1tn domestic debt and N1.6tn. The domestic debt, however, includes borrowing from the Central Bank of Nigeria, according to the presentation document.

In March 2021, the Debt Management Office had disclosed that the country’s total public debt stock was N32.9tn as of December 2020.

An additional N6.7tn loan means the total public debt stock would be about N39.6tn as of November 2021.

The DMO had disclosed that the country’s total public debt increased to N33.1tn at the end of the first quarter of 2021, from N32.9tn in December 2020, showing an increase of about 200bn.

In Q2 2021, the total debt stock rose by N2.4tn to N35.5tn by June 2021.

The increase continued by N2.5tn to hit N38tn by Q3 2021, which was the last figure provided by the DMO.

However, based on the minister’s presentation, there was an increase of N1.6tn from September to November 2021.

The PUNCH had reported that within the 11-month period, debt servicing gulped N4.2tn which represents 76.2 per cent of the N5.51tn revenue generated during the period.

The minister defended government borrowing and the country’s debt level, insisting the country had a revenue challenge, and not a debt problem, adding that the debt level was still within sustainable limits.

She had said, “This is to restate, that the debt level of the Federal Government is still within sustainable limits. Borrowings are essentially for capital expenditure and human development as specified in Section 41(1)a of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007.

“Having witnessed two economic recessions we have had to spend our way out of recession, which contributed significantly to the growth in the public debt. “It is unlikely that our recovery from each of the two recessions would have been as fast without the sustained government expenditure funded partly by debt.”

However, economic experts, including a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and former presidential candidate, Kingsley Moghalu, have countered the minister.

Moghalu had said, “There are many ways through which we can improve Nigeria’s domestic revenue situation without selling the future of our country. As to the argument that Nigeria does not have a debt problem but a revenue problem, that is mere sophistry. If you’re spending 90kobo of every one naira you earn repaying debt, you are insolvent.

“You cannot say that we have a debt-to-GDP ratio that allows you to continue borrowing. No! That is an argument for sustainable economies. You cannot be comparing Nigeria with advanced economies. We are in an economy that is still very basic.

“If you are not earning enough revenue, why are you borrowing? You are just compounding your problem. Why don’t you focus on where to get the revenue from instead of lazily ignoring that problem and just trying to survive with borrowing?

“If an individual was living a life that way, it would be a calamity. That is why Nigeria is in a calamitous situation today economically,” he said.

The World Bank had recently said Nigeria’s debt was vulnerable and costly, adding that the country’s debt was at risk of becoming unsustainable in the event of macro-fiscal shocks.

Abia APC: Count Me Out Of Any Faction, Our Party One — Sen. Kalu

0

Leader of APC in Abia and Former Governor of the State and Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Kalu has stated that he doesn’t belong to any group, faction or sub- division in the All Progressives Congress (APC) as he maintains that Abia state chapter of the APC is one.

Reacting to a news report in Thisday newspaper of January 16, 2022 with the caption: “Kalu, Emenike Absent at APC Reconciliation Meeting”, the former Governor also categorically stressed that he is not working with the Peoples  Democratic Party (PDP) to sabotage the chances of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

While noting that the ideals of the APC are anchored on probity, transparency and accountability, the party will not allow any individual (s) hijack the party structure, adding that the party is for the majority and not any individual, who doesn’t have what it takes to win elections.

Kalu faulted those referring card carrying members of APC as members of Orji Kalu group, adding that divisions are not allowed in the party, emphasizing that the APC in Abia state will not be allowed to be hijacked by a minority with no electoral value.

In a statement by his media office, Kalu called on the Chairman of the APC National Reconciliation Committee, Senator Abdullahi Adamu to ignore the false claims in some quarters, stressing that he (Kalu) remains a committed, selfless, dedicated and loyal chieftain of the party.

He said, “It is unfortunate, disheartening and wicked that a minority in Abia state, who don’t have the capacity to win elections can make false and defamatory statements against Senator Orji Kalu, who during the 2019 general elections used his resources to win seats in the national assembly despite the stiff resistance by the PDP-led Abia state government.

“Kalu has sustained his leadership in APC in Abia state by consistently deploying human and financial resources to galvanize grassroots support for the party.

” During the 2019 general elections, the former Governor won his Senatorial seat and supported in clinching victory for two seats in the House of Representatives and provided huge support for the APC gubernatorial candidate.

“Kalu will not join issues with anyone as he will not allow people without electoral value distract him from focusing on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

“The former Governor doesn’t belong to any faction as he has always maintained neutrality and played a father to all role in the party”

The former Governor urged the national leadership of the party to be wary of people who don’t have electoral value to misinform them, adding that he will support the majority at all times as elections are won through  votes and not propaganda.

“People In North-East Can Now Sleep With Their Eyes Closed” – Buni Praises Buhari, Lawan For Improved Security

0

The Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni on Sunday praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his untiring efforts at restoring peace and normalcy particularly to the troubled north eastern part of the country.

Buni acknowledged that there is now a significant improvement in the security situation in the Northeast particularly in Yobe State.

The Yobe Governor also commended the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan for providing the right leadership at the National Assembly and for providing the much needed support and cooperation to enable the executive arm of government perform.

Governor Buni spoke at the 2022 Annual Machina Cultural Festival which started on Monday and ended on Sunday.

Buni said the large and peaceful congregation that witnessed the cultural festival was an evidence that the security situation had improved.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the security personnel the required resources to secure lives and property in the country.

“As a result of this, the people in the north eastern part of the country can now sleep with their two eyes closed.

“In case there is still anybody in doubt, this large congregation at this event is enough proof that the security situation has improved,” Buni said.

Buni also thanked the traditional rulers, other community leaders and Imams for their prayers which, from evidence, had been answered by God.

Governor Buni also made glowing remarks about the Senate President for leading a legislative arm which provided cooperation and support needed for the executive arm to deliver on its mandate to the people.

Buni said the various projects that the government had executed or are now being implemented were the results of the cooperation and support which once eluded the Buhari’s administration the first four years but are now being provided by the current Assembly.

“I have earlier acknowledged Ahmad Lawan as Sardaunan Bade. He is not Sardaunan Bade alone but Sardaunan of Northern Nigeria.

“He was voted here as a Senator because this is his constituency. But God has made him Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

“Since he assumed office as Senate President, the support and cooperation that he gives the executive arm of government led by President Muhammadu Buhari has brought about the development in the country that we are witnessing today.

“That cooperation and support by the current National Assembly is what is responsible for the development we are seeing today in Nigeria because the first four years of President Buhari, he did not enjoy this kind of cooperation and support by the National Assembly.

“This is why we are seeing projects of national and rural development and the likes and these projects will get to you here very soon,” Buni said.

Besides Lawan and Buni, Governors of Jigawa State, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and Kebbi State, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu were also at Machina to witness the cultural festival.

Lawan and the three Governors were all honoured with chieftaincy titles by the chief host, the Emir of Machina, HRH Alhaji Dr. Bashir Albishir Bukar Machinama.

The Machina Paramount ruler gave Lawan letter of appointment as the Danmasani Machina.

Lawan was once Danmasani Bade but having been elevated by the Bade Emirate Council in Yobe State as Sardaunan Bade, his first son, Ibrahim Ahmad Lawan now bears the title.

The Yobe State Governor received a letter of appointment as Zanna Gargamma, Jigawa State Governor as Dugajin Machina and Kebbi State Governor as Dan Maliki Machina.

The week long activities which became an annual event in 2006 were rounded off on Sunday with grand Durban which was a beautiful display of horsemanship and led by the Machina Paramount ruler himself, HRH Alhaji Dr. Bashir Albishir Bukar.

The colourful event was also witnessed by the Shehu of Borno, HRH. Alhaji Abubakar Umar Garbai Ibn Al – Kanemi.

Ikpeazu’s Response: Alex Otti Rocks ‘Flyover Gbasara Anyi’ T-shirt As Group Donates Dozens More

0

A chieftain of APC in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has been sighted in a t-shirt with the inscription, ‘Flyover Gbasara Anyi’ in what appears to be a response to the state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

Recall that in a recent interview, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu had in response to why the lingering Osisioma flyover has remained uncompleted for years asked the journalists what their concerns with the flyover are.

The governor went further to remind them that some persons raising concerns about the flyover do not have cars, a response that has since generated condemnation.

This comes as a UK based group, Abia Restoration Group, ARG donates additional dozens of the branded t-shirt to Dr. Otti, a former MD of the defunct Diamond Bank whom they say speaks their minds.

The group disclosed that it made the donation as a way of appreciating Dr. Otti for his press release and other interventions which have holistically aligned with their position and those of other millions of Abians who felt embarrassed by the recent interview granted by the governor, and encouraged him to use his influence and reach to ensure that the T Shirts get to as many Abians as possible as a way of reminding them that indeed, they have the right to ask questions on the status of every project in Abia, including the Osisioma Flyover.

The group stated that it would no longer stand idly by and watch the state being ridiculed by the government through its wrong policies, programs and utterances which have continuously presented the state and the people in bad light.

Receiving the T Shirts, the ex Bank Chief thanked the group for taking interest in what is happening in Abia, even though they live thousands of miles away from the state, and disclosed that it was his duty and that of other illustrious sons and daughters of Abia to challenge and possibly stop every action and policy that could endanger the economic development and wellbeing of Abia and Abians by speaking out as well as taking measures that could serve the interests of the masses.

He encouraged the group to remain courageous in its effort geared towards demanding for responsible leadership in Abia, and reminded them that the Abia situation has become an albatross and national embarrassment that must be faught and defeated for the good of all.

The inscription on the T Shirt which reads ” Flyover Gbasara Anyi” seeks to remind Governor Ikpeazu that Abians reserve the right to ask questions about the Flyover and other projects that have suffered unnecessary delays and abandonment despite huge funds already spent on them.

Uzodinma’s Two Years In Office Full Of Disaster — Imo PDP

0

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has described as disastrous, the two years reign of Hope Uzodinma as the Governor of the state.

PDP in a statement issued by its state publicity secretary, Emenike Nmeregini, on Monday, accessed the two year anniversary of Uzodiinma as governor and accused him of underperforming.

The main opposition party said that within two years, the Uzodinma’s administration had politicised insecurity in the state and had allowed bandits, kidnappers and terrorists to overrun the state.

It also alleged that the state is now the unemployment capital of the country, owing to bad governance.

According to PDP, the state is now the most indebted state in the South-East zone, owing to what it called bogus borrowing with proper utilisation of the funds by the Uzodinma’s administration.

The statement read, “The people of Imo State and Nigerians will recall that on January 14, 2020, a bizarre and controversial Supreme Court judgement truncated the popular gubernatorial mandate which Imo people had freely given to our party through our flagbearer, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON at the March 9, 2019 governorship election. That judgement also enthroned the generally disputed, illegitimate regime of Senator Hope Uzodinma.

“Aside from the adverse implications of that ruling on the nation’s electoral jurisprudence and freedom of choice, the regime has in the last two years foisted the most reprehensible administration upon the people of Imo State.

“The illegitimate regime of Senator Uzodinma has without remorse, abdicated the primary obligation of government as prescribed by the Constitution, which is the security of lives and property. Rather, it has politicized an unfortunate security situation in the state which has continued to gulp countless innocent lives, everyday. Today, bandits, terrorists, cannibals, kidnappers and unknown gunmen are almost overrunning the State.

“It is curious that Senator Uzodinma, until now, is yet to refute a very weighty allegation by the Senator representing his own senatorial district who accused him of being a mastermind of a deadly hit squad that is backed by his administration. Most areas in Orlu Zone are currently under the firm grip of gunmen, a situation that has thousands of our citizens internally displaced.

“Our party and indeed the people of Imo State regret that Senator Uzodinma suspended and summarily dismantled all the foundations and programmes our Rebuild Imo administration painstakingly put in place in all the sectors towards the rebuilding of Imo State.

“Our government commenced the Treasury Single Account, Autonomy for local government system, Technical and Skills Development Colleges, Automated Payment System for prompt payment of salaries and pensions, agricultural revolution, infrastructural revolution, civil service reform, the revival of ISOPADEC, Technology and ICT development, qualitative free education etc.

“These and other programmes of the Rebuild Imo Administration were dumped by Uzodinma even when he embarked on a borrowing spree, in most cases, nocturnally, which has placed Imo as the most indebted state in the entire South East. This is worrisome given that the regime still cannot point to any landmark project it has done in two years to justify the huge borrowings.

“Last year alone, the regime accessed over N59 billion loans from foreign and domestic sources. This year, 2022, Senator Uzodinma has perfected plans to borrow an additional N61 billion. When added to well over N103 billion which has come to the local government areas from FAAC under Uzodinma, the N105 billion which has come to the State, the N24 billion which the State has internally generated and the N10 billion which represents the 13% Oil Derivation, it is heartbreaking that there is nothing in Imo to show for the monies.

“This is obviously not the Imo State we envisioned for our children. Within the years under review, Senator Uzodinma has had neither a well-researched policy nor direction in the various sectors of the state. This is the calamity that has befallen our State.

“Our party notes with great pain that within two years, Senator Uzodinma has made our state, Imo, the unemployment capital of Nigeria. It is noteworthy that the relevant rating board, the Presidential Business Enabling Environment Council, has consistently placed Imo at the lowest rung of the ladder in terms of ease of doing business in Nigeria. Worse still, within two years, our state ranks highest in the South East in terms of infant and maternal mortality rates.

“Imo has collapsed under Gov. Uzodinma. In the past two years, Senator Uzodinma has willfully denied workers and retirees their salaries and pensions. When workers stage protests, they are tagged fake and brutalized by agents of the government. Also, the local government system has been completely emasculated, defunded and stripped of autonomy, thus, giving way for mass misery at the grassroots.

“We wish to encourage the people of Imo State to keep the spirit alive. This regime must expire very soon to give way for a PDP led government for the good of the people.”

When contacted for reaction, the state Commissioner for information and strategy, Declan Emelumba, dismissed PDP’s claims and disclosed that he will officially respond to the allegations “in the next two hours”.

72 Hours After Reopening Of Twitter, Buhari, Osinbajo Shun Microblogging Platform

0

More than 72 hours after the Federal Government announced the lifting of the ban on Twitter, the President, Muhammadu Buhari is yet to tweet.

Several media aides of the President have resumed using the platform since the ban was lifted last Thursday, except the President himself and the Vice President, who only re-tweeted updates about Saturday’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day from handles of the Nigerian Army and that of the Government of Nigeria.

In the early hours of January 13, 2021, the regime officially lifted the seven-month ban on Twitter.

According to a statement signed by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency and Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement, Kashifu Abdullahi, hours earlier, the U.S. company had agreed to meet all the conditions set by the government.

The Microblogging platform was suspended in Nigeria on June 5, 2021, two days after it deleted a tweet by the President.

The Federal Government also accused Twitter of double standards and amplifying the voice of secessionists in the country.

In a statement at the time, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, cited “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

Since June, the Federal Government and Twitter representatives have been negotiating over several vital issues, including Twitter’s registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission and opening a physical office in Nigeria.
