BREAKING! Reps Set To Amend Mode Of Primaries In Electoral Bill

0

The House of Representatives is set to amend the provision of Direct Primaries in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila disclosed this on Tuesday in his welcome remarks to members of the House.

The speaker said the version of the bill circulating is not the same as the version sent to President Muhammadu Buhari. He, however, assigned a committee to investigate this.

According to him, the argument that political parties do not have a proper register of all their members is an indictment of the parties themselves.

He wondered how they are able to conduct elections through direct or indirect methods without a comprehensive register.

The speaker also ruled out hopes of overriding President Buhari on the issue.

The lawmakers resumed plenary on Tuesday after their Christmas and New Year break after proceeding on holiday in December.

Before the holiday, they had deliberated on and passed some important bills including the controversial Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Gbajabiamila in a speech to the lawmakers in December to mark the adjournment of the House for the Christmas and New Year break said the House will address the matter in January 2022.

Gbajabiamila explained that the time was short to address the sensitive issue at hand in haste because members were set to proceed on break, and they must pass other important bills such as the 2022 Appropriation Bill and the Finance Bill before doing so.

President Buhari had earlier withheld his assent to the bill citing the cost of conducting direct primary elections, security challenges, and possible manipulation of electoral processes by political actors as reasons.

An accomplice to the suspect, one Tonero was said to have escaped after robbing a tricycle passenger.

According to reports, at about 9:00am on Tuesday, the suspect and his accomplice, Tonero boarded a public tricycle at Tinacious junction, heading towards Tombia Roundabout.

It was further learnt that the tricycle had a male passenger onboard already, and that immediately the tricycle moved, the suspect and his accomplice held the passenger at gun point and asked him to submit all his belongings.

It was gathered that they succeeded in robbing the passenger of his phone and cash, but luck ran out of them when they ordered the tricycle rider to stop but refused and drove them into the hands of operatives of the State Vigilante Operatives who were stationed at Tombia Roundabout.

After parking the tricycle, driver jumped out and raised the alarm that drew the attention of the vigilante that swiftly responded and chased the robbers who took to their heels to escape being apprehended.

However, one of the robbers armed with pistol managed to escape but Austin was not so lucky as he was caught after about a hundred meter distance chase.

He has since confessed to the crime, other criminal acts he has succeeded in carrying out and gave vivid details of how he has been terrorizing Edepie – Agudama axis of the State Capital.

Drivers and commuters who recognized him, confirmed that he is part of those who rob innocent citizens with gun in broad day light, especially travellers at the Tombia motor park and it environs.

The Chairman Bayelsa State Vigilante Service, Hon. Doubiye Alagba, who handed over the suspect to the anti-cultism unit of the Nigeria Police Force, Bayelsa State Command, revealed that, Tarzan is already on the wanted list of the vigilante outfit.

According to him “There are too many complains about Tarzan, he is one of those criminals who has refused to change. His likes are one of the reasons why the Bayelsa State Vigilante has decided to take over the Tombia-Edepie roundabout, Swali Market area and other strategic flashpoints in the state.

“We will continue to mount checkpoints at these strategic flashpoints for as long as these criminals refuse to change their ways and live a peaceful life.

“I want to assure Bayelsans that, our outfit is equal to that task and we will make sure that ‘operation keep the flashpoints safe’ reduces crime in the area and state in general“, he noted.

The lawmaker stated this when he featured on his weekly radio programme, The Ben Kalu’s Mandate, streamed live on ABN TV and Radio simultaneously.

Speaking on the current issues within the party in the state, the Reps Spokesperson highlighted that the strength of the party is in its unity, noting that there will be no victory in an atmosphere of disunity.

He said, “As of today, If Abia APC wants to win the government House in Abia State, it’s not in the shape and form that we are going about it, and this is the truth. The national body has seen it and this is why they have set up the reconciliation committee to look into the issues concerning it. However, this committee met in Abuja a few days ago, unfortunately, I could not join them but I heard they met and it was not attended by parties who should attend instead, letters were sent in place of physical presence.

“The tone of the letters I have been reading online, I’m not sure if they were actually from the right sources but if they were then we are truly deceiving ourselves. In the sense that we need people to win elections. Peace and reconciliation is not an evidence of weakness but strength.

“When we came on board in 2015, there was a new energy in the party. Nobody is taking any glory but people worked very hard to reposition the party, If politics is about the people, we should not be anti-reconciliation because no one man can do it alone. If you think you’re powerful, and you can do it alone, you will fail. It is only wise to have people come together, sit and deliberate on the way to move the party forward.
