Barely three weeks after their inauguration, a member of new executive members of Ebem Ohafia Development Union, EODU, Mr Ifeanyi Okali has restored power in the community market, ABN TV reports.

This comes as a member of the community whose identity we chose to keep anonymous said the leadership of EODU is known for patrolling the park and market without any visible achievement to show for it.

Okali said the unnamed community member passed the remark while the EODU executive members toured the revenue generation projects in the community, particularly the timber shed, the community park, and the market.

Okali who is the Publicity Secretary of EODU and the director of ABN TV and Radio, while speaking with our correspondent on Monday said he was personally challenged by the comment.

To this end, he said he mobillised resources and fixed at least three solar power systems in the market.

The National President of EODU, Mr. Emeka Mba also promised to fix three solar power systems, Mr. Ogboso Kalu Nnoke promised to fix one while EODU member Togo branch, Mr. Jesima pledged to fix one.

Apparently disturbed by the prolonged darkness in the market, the community member was however silenced by the restoration of power at the weekend for which market women could not hide their joy.

Though the garrulous community member did not categorically state the EODU exco he was referring to, it is however clear that his reference was not to the current exco inaugurated in December.

Recall that the solar power in the community market was installed by the late former Director of Finance in NNPC, Late Chief Okwara Osonwa.

Okali said the project was later vandalized and its parts carted away by the vandals.

This he said was part of the issues raised by the market women during their interaction with EODU leadership.

They said prior to the restoration of power in the market, hoodlums usually invade the market to steal their wares.

In his comment, the paramount Ruler of Ebem kingdom and Kpoke 1, Ekeluogo Autonomous Community, Ebem Ohafia, HRH Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha (JP) applauded the new leadership of EODU for starting on a strong footing.

Court Orders Arrest Of Diezani Alison-Madueke Over Money Laundering

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, issued a warrant for the arrest of former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the United Kingdom.

Justice Bolaji Olajuwon issued the order after he heard an oral application the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, made through its lawyer, Farouk Abdullah.

EFCC said its investigations revealed that the ex-Minister who is facing several money-laundering allegations, has remained in her hideout in the UK and refused to return to the country to enter her plea to charges against her.

Abdullah told the court that all efforts by the agency to get the ex-Minister extradited back to the country proved abortive.

He stressed that the warrant would enable the EFCC to persuade the International Police (INTERPOL) to arrest Diezani and also help the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to facilitate her extradition.

“We urge my lord to issue an arrest warrant against Alison-Madueke, who is believed to be in the UK to enable all law enforcement agencies and the INTERPOL to arrest her anywhere she is sighted and be brought before this court to answer to the allegation made against her, ” EFCC’s lawyer added.

EFCC anchored the application on section 83(1b) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015.

Meanwhile, after he had listened to the application, Justice Olajuwon granted it as prayed, even as he adjourned the case sine die (indefinitely) to await the arrest and extradition of the Defendant.

It will be recalled that the court had on July 24,  2020, ordered the former Minister to appear before it to answer to the money laundering charge pending against her.

The summon followed an ex-parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CR/208/2018, which was filed by the EFCC.

The anti-graft agency told the court that due to Deizani’s refusal to make itself available, it published the summon on both its website and on a national daily.

It will be recalled that Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu who previously handled the case before she was transferred out of Abuja, had earlier declined to issue a bench warrant against Defendant.

She noted that the EFCC failed to file affidavit evidence to prove that it was unable to serve the summon that was issued by the court, on Defendant.

EFCC had told the court that investigations revealed that the former Petroleum Minister was not only deeply involved in money laundering, but equally played key roles in other financial crimes.

It decried that since the ex-Minister fled the country immediately after she exited the office, it has been difficult to get her back to respond to different criminal allegations against her.

In one of the documents it filed before the court, EFCC, said Diezani was among other things, wanted over the alleged role she played in the award of Strategic Alliance Agreement (SAA) to; Septa Energy Limited, Atlantic Energy Drilling Concept Limited, and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited by NNPC.

As well as to answer questions on her role in the chartering of private jets by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and Ministry of Petroleum Resources and her role in the award of contracts by NNPC to Marine and Logistics Services Limited.

Besides, the agency said it is currently investigating the nature of business relationships the former Minister had with some persons.

It listed some of Diezani’s alleged allies under investigation as Mr Donald Amamgbo, Mr. lgho Sanomi, Mr Afam Nwokedi, Chief lkpea Leemon, Miss Olatimbo Bukola Ayinde, Mr Benedict Peters, Christopher Aire, Harcourt Adukeh, Julian Osula, Dauda Lawal, Nnamdi Okonkwo, Mr Leno Laithan, Sahara Energy Group and Midwestern Oil Limited.

The EFCC said it wanted the ex-Minister to speak on several items, documents, and jewelleries that were recovered from her house at No: 10 Chiluba Close off Jose Marti Street, Asokoro, Abuja, and some identified properties that are linked to her In Nigeria, UK, United States of America (USA), United Arab Emirate (UAE) and South Africa.

More so, the Commission told the court that it would also require Diezani to explain her role in financing the 2015 general elections, particularly the money that were warehoused at Fidelity Bank Plc in 2015, prior to the elections.

Watford Commiserate With Troost-Ekong, Okoye Over Eagles’ AFCON Exit

Premier League club Watford have commiserated with their Nigerian stars William Troost-Ekong and Maduka Okoye, following Super Eagles elimination at this year’s AFCON.

Troost-Ekong and Okoye were in action but could not prevent the Eagles from losing 1-0 to Tunisia in the round of 16 on Sunday.

After a tight first half, Tunisia broke the deadlock early in the second half after Okoye was beaten by a Youssef Msakni’s long range shot.

All efforts to get back into the game was ended after Alex Iwobi was sent off for a bad tackle.

And commenting on the Eagles’ loss, Watford wrote on Twitter: ”🇳🇬 Commiserations to Troost-Ekong & @OkoyeMaduka, who exit #AFCON2021 with #TeamNigeria after defeat in the Round of 16.”

Both players will hope to put the disappointment behind them when the Eagles face Ghana in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in March.

Buhari Against Fuel Subsidy Removal – Sylva

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, says President Muhammadu Buhari is not in support of the removal of subsidy on the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol.

Rather, he explained that the Federal Government planned to complete consultations before coming out with a clear policy direction on the matter.

“I will tell you categorically that at this moment, the complete removal of subsidy is not on our plate at all,” said Sylva during this week’s edition of Channels Television’s Newsnight.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not in support of removing subsidy at this time,” he said.

The Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, had in November last year hinted that Nigeria would effect the complete removal of fuel subsidy in June 2022 and replace them with a N5000-a-month transportation grant to the poorest Nigerians.

Amid mixed reactions over the issue, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, last Tuesday said President Buhari never directed the removal of fuel subsidy.

Sylva, on his part, explained that the President’s position in opposing fuel subsidy was predicated on its effect on citizens at the bottom of the pyramid.

He also identified some of the options the authorities were considering regarding the issue.

“We are working out the processes,” said the minister. “Of course, we all know that it is a desirable policy direction. Of course, we know that it will have some impacts on the people and that is why we are trying to work out some of those things.

“Until those details are worked out properly with (the organised) labour, and with all the stakeholders in the sector, we will not remove the subsidy. At this moment, it is not on our plate, I can tell you that.

“This is something that needs to be worked out between the Federal Government and the states because this is a federation issue. We are working with the governors to see how we can continue with this policy direction of subsidising fuel for the foreseeable future.”

 

Herdsmen Attack Enugu Community, Kill One, Injure Two

At least one life was lost while two others are in critical condition after suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked Abor Community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, Saturday.

Report has it that after the attack on Mgbuji farm settlements, also in the council area which resulted in the death of at least three farmers about two weeks ago, the herders relocated to another farm settlement in Abor, where the latest attack took place.

A member of the community who spoke in anonymity said the three farmers were attacked with machetes, resulting in the death of one of the victims.

“Three farmers were attacked in their farm settlement on Saturday at Abor. One is already dead while two others are critically injured with severe machete cuts. They are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital now.

“This is not the first time our community is being attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen this New Year,” he said.

The source said that palpable fear has gripped the community over the movement and resultant attacks of herdsmen in the local government, calling on the governments to find lasting solution to the menace.

The spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the attack but said that no life was lost.

“Yes, there was an attack but nobody died,” he said.

Angry Youths Set Ablaze Late Hanifa Abubakar’s School

Angry youths have stormed and set ablaze Noble Kids Academy, situated at Kwanar Dakata, Kano State, where late Hanifa Abubakar, a five-year-old was kidnapped, killed, and buried by her proprietor, Abdulmalik Tanko.

It was gathered that the youths mobilized themselves and launched an attack on the building in the wee hours of Monday.

Recall that the youths had, some days ago after the ugly incident, attempted to burn down the school but were prevented by security agents deployed to forestall the breakdown of law and order in the area.

1999 Constitution: Amendment Bill Ready February — Lawmakers

Some members of the National Assembly have disclosed that they have not stopped work on the process of amending the 1999 Constitution, assuring Nigerians that the amended document would be ready before the end of the Ninth National Assembly.

Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, on Sunday, at a town hall meeting with their constituents, the lawmakers, Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi from Ekiti North, Senator Tolu Odebiyi from Ogun West, Senator Kola Balogun from Oyo South, Mr. Bamidele Salam, who represented Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore /Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun State; Isiaka Ibrahim, who represented Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency of Ogun State, and Babajide Obanikoro, who represents Eti-Osa Federal Constituency of Lagos State, said there is no going back on the amendment of the constitution.

Salami said: “The constitution will be amended before the end of this Ninth National Assembly. I want to assure you that the amendment will be done. But let me tell you that amending a document such as a constitution of a country is a very serious business. It is an assignment that requires wide-ranging engagements of critical stakeholders, opinion moulders, and institutions.

“Even though we may not have cameras being beamed on what is being done presently, that does not mean that nothing is being done. People sent in memoranda from everywhere and there were submissions made by members of the National Assembly themselves to amend certain aspects of the constitution.

“All these will be aggregated into a sizable portion so that we don’t have an unwieldy set of clauses being pushed forward for amendment. Very soon, we will start seeing more activities in that regard. Before the end of this year, we would have been able to see some things.

“Some of those provisions will be sent to the houses of assembly very soon, especially the ones that we have formed consensus on, they will be passed and sent and others will follow suit in the last part of this Ninth National Assembly.”

Giving an insight into the aspects Nigerians want to be amended, he said the South-West wanted devolution of powers and true federalism more than anything;  and the creation of more states was more dominant from the South-East. He added that the issue of moving derivation funds from 13 per cent to 50 per cent is very important to the people of the South-South.

The lawmaker also said the policing system would be touched by the amendment, saying it was out of place for the police to draw resources from the states and local government while those who they benefit from have no say in their operations.

“It is my desire and that of my people that we should unbundle the policing system in Nigeria. It is actually in our own interest and I get baffled at times when I see those who are afraid of that. I don’t know what anybody is afraid of in unbundling the Police to have a decentralised control system, a more decentralised funding system.

“I was a local government chairman and we were buying tyres and batteries for police vehicles and paying them allowance even though we did not have control over them. As a member of the National Assembly today, the police in my constituency still write letters to me to come and repair their vehicles.

“If we have a system that wants to derive resources from local and state governments, and they have no say in the recruitments and their operations, how does that work?” 

I am very hopeful that the amended constitution will take good care of this area,” he added.

A member of the House of Representatives from  Ifo/ Ewekoro Federal Constituency of Ogun State,  Isiaka  Ibrahim, said  Nigerians would see the progress made so far by the lawmakers concerning the amendment of the constitution as from January 27.

Ibrahim said: “Based on the work plan that has just been rolled out, the constitution will be passed on to the President for his assent. The amended constitution would be transmitted to the President before the end of February.”

AFCON 2021: “How We Neutralized Simon, Chukwueze” – Tunisia Coach

Tunisia’s coach Mondher Kebaier has explained how his team was able to neutralize the threats of Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze, in Sunday’s AFCON 2021 round of 16 game.

A second half strike for stand-in skipper Youssef Msakni was enough to seal qualification into the last eight for Tunisia.

The Eagles were unable to create any shot on target with wingers Simon and Chukwueze rendered ineffective in the game.

Simon in particular had been one of the stars of the tournament following his impressive performance in the group stage.

And reacting to his team’s win, Kebaier explained how the Eagles’ wingers were taken care of.

He also touched on another aspect of the Eagles game which they took advantage of.

“Today we came up with tactics to put pressure on the Nigerian wingers because they are very dangerous. And we also know they have difficulties when they lose the ball,” he said in his post-match press conference.

Tunisia will now take on Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals.

Pinnick Hails Super Eagles Endeavour After AFCON Exit

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick has commended the efforts of the Super Eagles despite a 0-1 loss to Tunisia in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match in Garoua.

“We are proud of the efforts of the players. They gave their all and tried very hard to win even when they had numerical disadvantage. It was just not our day,” Pinnick stated.

“I want to thank His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari for his love, support and encouragement to the team while they were in the championship. “The focus and attention will now shift to the FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off against Ghana in March. We want to assure Nigerians that we will prepare even harder for those two matches to get the job done.”

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant, Kingsley Moghalu, has said President Muhammadu Buhari was not the reason for Super Eagles elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations 2021.

Recall that Nigeria crashed out of AFCON after a 0-1 loss to the North African side, Tunisia.

A goalkeeping error from Maduka Okoye gave the Carthage Eagles the goal a few minutes into the second half.

Following the defeat, some Nigerians blamed the loss on President Muhammadu Buhari video call with the Super Eagles earlier before the match.

Others blamed Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, for his error.

Reacting, Moghalu, on Twitter said,”@NGSuperEagles lost to Tunisia. Period. It’s not because President @MBuhari called them.

“Let’s not be superstitious please. I’m sad though.
