President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the suspension of the planned removal of petroleum products subsidy until further notice.

This was disclosed to State House Correspondents on Tuesday by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Chief Timipre Sylva at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to the Minister, the executive will propose an 18-month extension to National Assembly for the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) meant to takeoff in February.

Buhari on August 16, 2021, signed the Petroleum Industry Bill into law.

Buhari’s assent to the bill was in furtherance to the passage of the Bill by the Senate and the House of Representatives in July 2021.

The PIA is expected to grow investors’ confidence in Petroleum Industry and create more employment opportunities for indigenes of the host communities.

Senate, Reps Harmonises Electoral Bill, Agrees On Consensus Mode Of Primary

The Senate and the House of Representatives have harmonised their positions on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2010.

Both Chambers of the National Assembly have agreed that “consensus” should be part of the mode of nominating candidates by political parties for elections.

This followed a motion titled: “Rescission on Clause 84 of the Electoral Act No.6 2010 (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and Committal to the Commitiee of the Whole” moved at plenary by the Leader Senator Yahaya Abdullahi.

The Senate last week passed the Electoral Bill. However while the Senate included consensus as a mode of primary by political parties, the House of Representatives rejected it.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the position represents a harmonised version of the Electoral Bills passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Lawan added details of how the consensus option of primary would be used by political parties have been spelt out in the Bill.

He expressed hope that President Muhammadu Buhari would sign the Bill when presented to him for assent.

Onazi Joins Saudi Club Al-Adalah

Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has joined Saudi Arabia First League club Al-Adalah.

Onazi is now the second Nigerian at the club with former home-based forward Tunde Adeniji already a key member of the squad.

The 29-year-old last featured for Turkish club Denizilispor.

The former Lazio star has struggled to stay fit in recent years which cost him his place in the national team.

Since leaving Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor in January 2020, Onazi has also played for Danish club SonderjysKE and Zalgris of Lithuania.

Al-Adalah occupy second position on the league table with 36 points from 20 matches.

Coalition Storms PDP, APC Secretariats, Demands Southern President

A group, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups on Monday held rallies at the national secretariats of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

The organisation appealed to both parties to zone their presidential ticket to the South, saying this would guarantee sustainable peace, national unity and strengthen the nation’s democracy.

Speaking during the rallies, the CCSG President, Bassey Williams argued that since the inception of democracy, the nation has witnessed a rotational presidency between the North and South just to keep the polity stable.

He said, “We are convinced that power should naturally rotate between the Northern and Southern region of the country. We also believe that it is by the avowed commitment to this arrangement that we can stop the current ethnographic-religious division being experienced in the country.

“Our visit today is to lend our voice in support of the call for power shift to the southern part of Nigeria. We hereby urge the great men and women of the PDP and APC to heed this patriotic call.

“It is on the strength of this that we march here today in our thousands to submit our position on the imperatives of a presidential candidate of southern Nigeria extraction come 2023 on the platforms of the PDP and APC. On power rotation, we stand.”

25-Year-Old Man Hangs Himself In Jigawa

A 25-year-old man identified as Nasiru Badamasi, has committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree at Tsadawa village in Taura local Government area of Jigawa State.

The District head of Tsadawa village, Alhaji muttaka Uba, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST.

He said the incident happened Monday night on a farm near Zangon Maje village.

Uba said the victim, a married man with a daughter, decided to kill himself for a reason best known to him.

Spokesman of the Jigawa State Police command, ASP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said the incident happened on 24/01/2022 at about 0230hrs at Tsadawa village Taura Local Government.

He said police on Monday received a report that a man who is suffering from mental illness was nowhere to be found since he left home.

Shiisu said later, the man was found hanging with his trousers on a tree at the outskirts of Zangon Maje village.

He said on receiving the information, a team of policemen moved to the scene and his corpse was conveyed to General Hospital Ringim where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.

He said no foul play was suspected and the case is still under investigation.

Put AFCON Behind, Focus On World Cup Qualification – Ex-Super Eagles Coach

Former Super Eagles’ Chief Coach, Christian Chukwu, has urged the Super Eagles to move on with future national assignments after crashing out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Chukwu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday that the Super Eagles should put the AFCON competition behind them and focus on qualification for the World Cup in Qatar.

“It is clear that our AFCON trophy chase is over. Let us come home, take stock and plan for our world cup qualifying encounter with Ghana.

“Judging from my personal experience as a player and coach, the boys brought in their best and did their best in the AFCON competition.

“They fought gallantly in each match they played.

“I am not happy with the red card given to Iwobi in the last match played by the Super Eagles as it should be a mere warning. He did not deserve a card at all,” he said.

Chukwu, who captained the national team when they were known as the Green Eagles, also lauded Augustine Eguavoen for the team spirit and discipline he built in the players.

“From all we can observe, Austin has handled the national team in the AFCON competition with a high sense of experience and professionalism, which resulted in no complaint from any quarters against him.

“He did great in the competition. He is still outstanding among other African coaches in the ongoing competition,” he said.

On what’s next for the Super Eagles, the 1980 AFCON winner said that the Super Eagles must get ready to beat the Black Stars of Ghana in the two-leg ties to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“Once we are able to beat Ghana; home and away, we are automatically at the World Cup this year. I pray we will get to that level once more,” he said.

AFCON 2021: Africa Should Be Proud Of Comoros – Drogba

Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba, has identified Comoros as the team Africa is proud of at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.

Drogba said this after Comoros was eliminated from the 2021 AFCON on Monday night.

Comoros was knocked out of the 2021 AFCON round of 16 tie against host nation Cameroon.

Debutants Comoros fought hard against Cameroon despite receiving a red card during the match.

However, they lost 2-1 against Cameroon.

“Waaah!!! What a team, what COURAGE, Africa is proud of this brave Comorian team @fedcomfootball,” Drogba tweeted.

Comoros had qualified for the AFCON round of 16 after beating Ghana 3-2 in their final group C match, sending the Black Stars back home.

EPL: Piers Morgan Tells Arsenal To Sack Mikel Arteta

Former CNN host, Piers Morgan, has told Arsenal to sack their manager, Mikel Arteta, if he doesn’t lead the club to a top-four finish this season.

Morgan, a strong Arsenal fan, said this after Arsenal failed to beat Burnley in a Premier League tie at the weekend.

Arsenal currently sits in the sixth position on the Premier League table with 36 points from 21 matches.

“For all his tough guy talk and endless “trust the process” bull****, [Mikel] Arteta’s so far been a demonstrable failure at Arsenal,” Morgan told The Sun.

“He’s been in charge for two years and 114 matches now and has a win record of just 53 percent, less than [Arsene] Wenger’s, whose last decade was woeful, and Unai Emery’s.

“Yes, he won the FA Cup within months of taking over [thanks to two goals by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang]. But for a club like Arsenal, it is winning the Premier League and Champions League that matters and on which real success should be judged.

“This season, despite Arteta splashing out £150million on new players, we are sixth and already out of both domestic cups.

“If we don’t make the top four this season, and even that “achievement” seems such a lowly ambition for a supposed big club, then he should not be given a pay rise, he should be sacked.”
