2023: Afenifere Dumps South West Candidates, Insists On Igbo Presidency

0

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, said any attempt to deny the South-East the presidency in 2023 is a gang-up against the region dominated by Igbo.

Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in a chat with Sunday Vanguard, said those opposed to Igbo President are discriminatory against the region.

The statement was interpreted in many politically informed circles to mean that the group may not back a Yoruba aspirant for the nation’s highest office in 2023.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are believed to be main contenders in the race to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari from the South-West while Senator Pius Anyim and Governor Dave Umahi among others from the South-East and also eyeing Aso Rock Villa..

Whereas Tinubu has publicly declared his ambition, Osinbajo is said to be considering running against his mentor who was single handedly responsible for his nomination to run as deputy to Buhari first in 2015 and later in 2019.

Adebanjo said: “If there is anything like power shift in Nigeria, it should go to the South-East. There is doubt about that, any other thing is just gang-up.

“There should not be any argument about that because the South-West has gotten it, the North has gotten, South-South has gotten it. You want the Igbo to remain in Nigeria but you want to discriminate against them.

“There should be no argument about where power should shift to, it should go to the South-East. Any other thing is gang-up.”

Wike Accuses Illegal Refinery Operators Of Destroying Public Health, Economy

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State says operators of illegal crude oil refineries are causing great health hazards to residents in the state and destroying the national economy.

Wike disclosed this when he received the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, on Friday at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

The governor stated the importance of the war against illegal crude oil refinery activities, saying that proceeds from the oil and gas sector sustained the country.

“You and I know that one product we have today that has kept this country going is oil and gas, which I will say is the main source of our revenue in this country today.

“We must as a people, as a government, it doesn’t matter whichever faction you may be or whichever divide you may be, or you may find yourself, what is important is that you must defend our national assets,” he said.

Wike said that his administration would not spare any meaningful measure that could be deployed to stem illegal crude oil refinery activities in the state.

According to him, those engaging in the criminal activities need to ask themselves about the kind of money they are making by sabotaging the national economy.

“I will do anything within my powers to see that it is put to stop. I owe it as a duty, first by making sure that government is not losing revenue.

“Whenever we lose national revenue, it trickles down. It affects us at the state and local government levels and that is the revenue aspect of it,” Gov. Wike said.

He pointed to the issues of health, occasioned by soot, that results from the criminal activities.

“I am willing to fight it and will continue to fight it. Some people are trying to politicise it, that I am acting against certain ethnic groups. That can’t change me, it doesn’t matter,” he stated.

Wike stated that his administration was ready to give the security agencies necessary logistic support as they joined the state to fight the menace.

He stated that some major sites have been identified and what was required was for adequate security protection to be given to all those assigned to destroy them.

Gov. Wike urged the Chief of Defence Staff to give his officers and men final directive to join hands with the Rivers government to fight illegal oil bunkering.

According to him, this will stem further destruction of the environment and the national economy.

In his response, Gen. Irabor said that he was in Port Harcourt as part of the tour of military formations in the Niger Delta.

He said the tour was aimed at assessing security strategies and motivating officers for greater efficiency.

Irabor expressed delight over the audacity shown by Gov. Wike in championing the fight against illegal crude oil refinery activities that have been a great threat to the oil and gas Industry.

He said the military had long desired such government focused strategy towards the security of oil and gas asset and hoped that other governors would emulate Wike

2023: Power Should Remain In North, South Took 14 Out Of 16 Years Of PDP — Gov. Bala Mohammed

0

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, is advocating for the northern part of Nigeria to retain power in 2023.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who swept to power in 2015, would have governed Nigeria for eight years by 2023, a situation that has generated concerns as to which geo-political zone would produce the next President.

Although the dominant political parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have not zoned the presidency to any region, there have been agitations that the South be given the ticket. But Governor Mohammed, who said he is aware of the agitation, insisted that the North-East should be given the presidential slot for the sake of equity and justice.

“We are aware of the agitation of the southern part of the country because of the tenure of the leader, President Muhammadu Buhari who is from the North and will be finishing his tenure in 2023,” he said in Bauchi while receiving the progress report of the Contact Committee on his presidential ambition.

“I want to seize the opportunity to say that I am in PDP, I am not in the APC. It is the APC that has this burden. In my party, the last President was from the South. He was my President, Goodluck Jonathan. During the period my party was at the centre for 16 years, 14 of these years were led by the people from the South.

“So where is the justice and justification? So it is the time of the North. When you come to the North, North-East and South-East have not been there for too long, only a short stint compared to other zones.

“We should be given the opportunity. This Presidency, if it wants to be just and equitable to Nigerians, should be open to everybody from other sections of this country so that Nigerians can be given the opportunity to elect the best that can provide solution.”

Rivers Govt Destroys 27 Illegal Refining Sites, Arrest Eight

Eight persons suspected to be pipeline vandals have been arrested in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, as the operation to end oil bunkering and illegal refining of petroleum products is intensified by the State Government.

The suspects were arrested by a special anti-bunkering taskforce set up by the council chairman, Rowland Sekibo to fight illegal oil bunkering in the area.

The team, in different operations led by the chairman has also destroyed at least 27 illegal Refinery sites in the area in the past one week.

“My advise to them (communities) is that they should just give us information, because the truth is that it is difficult for many communities to fight against the people that indulge in this illegal bunkering, because they are criminals and you can’t take ordinary hands to a gunfight,” Mr Sekibo said.

“But those of us that are responsible, when we get information, we will go after them.”

The fight against illegal bunkering in Rivers State is being spearheaded by Governor Nyesom Wike.

Mr Wike earlier this month promised a reward of two million naira for identifying illegal refineries.

On Friday, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor led top military officers on a courtesy call to Mr Wike and pledged full military support for the fight against illegal refineries in the State.

General Irabor also vowed that the fight will be extended to all Niger-Delta states.

Buhari, APC Committed To Welfare Of Common Nigerians, Says Osinbajo

0

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, says the Muhammadu Buhari administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are committed to the welfare of the common man.

This, he explained, is because the APC is a party of the people and will continually ensure that the common man benefits maximally from its government.

Osinbajo stated this on Friday when he received on a courtesy call, a delegation of the APC Professionals Forum at the State House in Abuja.

“This is a party of the common man, a party of the people, a party that takes as its cradle, the importance of ensuring that the common man benefits maximally from the government which is why we have the big programmes like the social investment programmes – the largest of its kind on the continent and several of such other programmes that emphasise how serious we take the lot of the common man,” he was quoted in a statement by his media aide, Laolu Akande.

The vice president believes the party, which was formed nine years ago, has made an impact and is determined to improve the well-being of Nigerians.

For him, the APC is also where many young people are and the ruling party in Africa’s largest democracy which by itself is a phenomenal achievement for such a young party.

“You’ll find that in the particular ideological direction of our party, it’s one that it was clear to the original founders of the party, the initial persons and groups that came together to form the party and they came from different parties, but it was to present a left of centre, a social democratic alternative to the ruling party,” Osinbajo added.

The APC, according to him, is determined to ensure the country’s further growth and development as it carries the hopes and expectations of millions of Nigerians.

“We must make it a place where they are comfortable, a place where they feel this belongs to us. We can even put our resources into it; it is not just for politicians; it is for us all.”

The vice president believes leaders and politicians are there to serve the people and give them reasons to believe in a better country.

“Our people, the Nigerian people, need hope; they need to be able to believe in the politicians; they need to be able to believe in their leaders and if the leaders are within the political party, that political party must have an ideology that is attractive to them, that makes them feel wanted, that makes them feel cared for and I think that role is so crucial.

“It is the role this professional forum must take on to itself. And what it entails aside from that logical objective of the forum; what it entails is actually defining in writing in various ways what our party stands for,” he said.

Acknowledging the significance of the forum in the scheme of things, the Vice President urged the members to play more important roles in shaping the party’s ideology.

In his remarks, Chairman of the forum’s Board of Trustees and former governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, said the professionals in the party felt the need to identify with Osinbajo who is also a professional.

He also invited the vice president to the forum’s upcoming event in Abuja next week.

The forum’s delegation also included its Deputy Chairman of Board of Trustees and former APC National Secretary, Waziri Bulama; its Board of Trustees Secretary, Dapo Akinosun, SAN, and the National Coordinator, Akeem Akintayo.
