Yoruba Nation: Benin Republic Extends Sunday Igboho’s Detention By 6 Months – Counsel

0
Sunday Igboho

The Government of the Republic of Benin has extended the detention of Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho by six months.

Counsel for the detained activist, Chief Yomi Aliyyu, said this in a chat with The PUNCH on Sunday night.

This is contrary to what a lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said on Friday that Igboho would soon be released.

Aliyyu said the Benin Republic renewed Ignoho’s incarceration despite that there was no criminal charge against him and no extradition request from the Nigerian Government.

He said, “Contrary to what was speculated in the news by a lawyer, the government of the Republic de Benin has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria.”

Asked if his client would take any step to challenge the extension of his detention, Aliyyu said he would approach the court of the Economic Community of West African States.

“We will approach the ECOWAS Court which they never obeyed,” he added.

Olajengbesi, who secured the release of 12 Igboho’s aides arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service, had in a Facebook post on Friday that Igboho would be released soon and that his freedom would attract wild jubilation across Yorubaland.

It read, “Chief Sunday Igboho will be out very soon and there will be massive jubilation across the entire Yorubaland.

“He is no doubt a courageous man. This is very authoritative just that our Yoruba leaders should stop being selfish and allow good to prevail.”

Igboho, who escaped from a deadly raid on his Ibadan residence by the operatives of the Department of State Service on July 1, 2021 was arrested in Benin Republic on his way to Germany on July 19 together with his wife, Ropo.

His wife was released by Igboho and has been in detention since then and if the extension of his incarceration is allowed to stay, he may spend at least one year in detention in the country.

ASUU Begins Preparation For Strike, Declares Monday Lecture-Free

The Academic Staff Union of Universities. ASUU has urged its chapters across the country to sensitise members of the public on the situation between the union and the Federal Government. This is as it declared Monday, February 7, 2022, as a lecture-free day in a bid to enhance sensitisation.

The National President of the Union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday evening.

ABN TV reports that the directive to the chapters of ASUU comes less than a week after President Muhammadu Buhari pledged the commitment of his administration to fulfilling the agreement with the union.

Buhari made the promise when members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council visited him to discuss the lingering issues.

While making the pledge, Buhari pleaded with the union to exercise patience and consider current economic realities.

The last national strike by ASUU was in March 2020 and it lasted till December 2020, when a Memorandum of Action was signed.

However, a year after signing the MoA, ASUU accused the government of failing to fulfill its side of the bargain and threatened to mobilise for another strike immediately.

The government quickly moved to pay N55bn as part-payment for the Earned Academic Allowance and Revitalisation Fund, but the union was unmoved until the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council and other dignitaries waded in.

Speaking with our correspondent, Prof Osodeke clarified that the union had not yet declared a strike but would be sensitising the public, which includes the media, on the state of affairs between the union and the Federal Government.

Abia APC: Orji Kalu Calls For Unity, Begs Aggrieved Members Not To Defect
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

Chief Whip of the Senate and leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus in Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has called on the members of the party to embrace unity and togetherness ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The Abia North Senator also appealed to different factions to bury the idea of defecting to another political party amidst the disagreements in the party.

In a statement made available to ABN TV on Sunday, Kalu noted that disagreements are eminent in democratic settings, adding that he does not belong to any of the factions.

In his capacity as Leader of the party in the state, Kalu said he is watching very keenly the developments in the party with a special call on all aggrieved members to remain strong with a view to strengthening the party

He said defection cannot be the solution to their grievances, adding that everyone should allow the party’s national leadership to address the grievances amicably.

His words: “As the leader of the party, I have being neutral but that does not mean I am paying deaf ears on the grievances by individuals and groups.

“I wish to call on aggrieved members to keep confidence with the party, while we explore all peaceful means for amicable solution.

“I want to state that it is very normal for any member or faction to feel some kind of way , but we must allow the National leadership to use various reconciliation strategies to make the party stronger.

“The wisest actions from all members is to strengthen the party and work with everyone to achieve the common goal of successful outing in 2023.

“The Ward Congress, Local Government Congress and State Congress is over . I will encourage everyone who believes in our party to remain steadfast because what is ahead is more and better

“Abians are strongly behind APC and we have what it takes to wrestle power from the ruling party in the state .” the former governor said.

Nnamdi Kanu Told Me He Didn’t Issue Monday Sit-At-Home Order — Senator Abaribe

Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senate Minority Leader, revealed on Saturday that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), told him while in custody that he neither ordered nor knew about the Monday sit-at-home protest that has continued to be held in the Southeast.

He said that it was unfortunate that businesses were now relocating to other regions as a result of insecurity in the region.

In his words: “What is happening in the Southeast is a tragedy. Every Monday people sit at home in what they call ‘Holy Monday’. What is holy in making people suffer like this?

“IPOB has said countless times that they are not the ones enforcing the order. We don’t know who is enforcing it neither does it seem like we have a way to solve it.

“I went with Ike Ekweremadu and two bishops to the DSS to see Nnamdi Kanu and he told us ‘I have never said people should sit at home’. I told him that nobody believes you outside. Because people have said they don’t like it but they keep sitting at home.

“There is no way we are going to survive like this. You are sitting at home and the people who you are doing these things for are in Lagos and in Abuja and everywhere and they don’t care. And you are here killing your own.

Aba is known for bringing and opening containers of imported goods on Mondays. So, the problems we’re having today is that because of the sit-at-home, people now go to Port Harcourt, Uyo and Calabar to open their containers. They’re leaving Southeast and moving out to Lagos. When we all leave, who will you blame? The captains of industries are no longer there.”

He lamented that the insecurity of the Southeast had assumed the biggest problem of the region.

Insecurity in the Southeast is the biggest problem we are facing now. And the sooner we tackle it the better for us. Even if you are seeking a separate country, why would you destroy your own place with your hands? You need to have a viable country and not a scattered one”, he said.

It was his appeal to Ndigbo that they should concentrate on establishing the Southeast as the country’s economic hub, irrespective of the outcome of their presidential bid in 2023.

Abaribe also bemoaned the negative effect of Mondays’ sit-at-home on the economy of the region, saying rather than achieve anything good, the exercise had ended up chasing businessmen away from the region.

The senator, who spoke at the inauguration of Barr. Jasper Nduagwuike as the 16th President of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) on Saturday, urged businessmen, industrialists, and all stakeholders in the Southeast to follow in the footsteps of the people of Bavaria in Germany and Catalonia in Spain, who abandoned their ambitions to rule their countries and concentrated on making their regions the economic hub of their respective countries.

He said, “We want to turn the Southeast into the Catalonia of Spain, the biggest industrial area in that country. It doesn’t matter that they are seeking for their own self-sufficiency. They still become the industrial hub of that place so that at the end, even if you are going anywhere, you are going to become a viable country.

“If you destroy your place, where are you going to be when everything is destroyed.

“We want to turn the Southeast into the Bavaria of Nigeria. Bavaria is the industrial hub of Germany today. No Bavarian has been made president of Germany because they are the people that are holding the economy.

I want to task each and every one of us, especially the chamber of commerce that our job is cut out for us.”

Abaribe asked Ndigbo to make Southeast more attractive to businesses, noting that caving in to Monday’s sit-at-home culture may result in the region’s economy being completely destroyed.

What we need in the southeast is to turn the zone to a place that attracts people, not the place that people are running away from. We cannot grow as region if we don’t work 24 hours daily to uplift our standard of living.

In his opening remarks, Jasper Nduagwuike, who has committed to strive for the repositioning of the chamber, stated that his administration will oversee the development of a Trade Fair Complex in Enugu that is suitable for the needs of the business community.

Abia State government has stated that the closure of the Waterside abattoir and Ahia Udele market in Aba is permanent. The State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, who met with traders of the closed markets today in Umuahia informed them that the closure as directed by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is aimed at safeguarding life and preservation of public health.

No Going Back on Closure of Markets - Abia Government Insist

Chief Okiyi who expressed the deep pains and sympathy of the government to the traders over the accident that claimed four lives yesterday, informed them that Governor Ikpeazu has directed the ministry to ensure that the medical bills of injured persons are settled by the government.

He highlighted the efforts made by government to relocate the market particularly because of safety concerns raised by relevant agencies with a new Abattoir already under construction at Omumauzor in Ukwa West LGA.

According to him, “it will be irresponsible of this government to sit idly by and watch while the life and livelihood of our people are threatened daily by the very real hazards of doing business in and around the closed markets.

“We feel your pains and understand the circumstances that led to the market springing up there but we will have no excuse whatsoever to give to posterity if we fail to do the needful immediately.”

The Commissioner who was joined by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Sir Michael Egwu and other Directors, informed the traders that the closure was permanent and advised that all those concerned should ensure they move out every of their items before the close of business today.

He further stated that the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed the executives of Good Morning market in Aba to allow displaced traders from Ahia Udele to take up vacant shops in tne market immediately without demanding rent from them for at least 3 months in order to make them settle with ease and continue their businesses with minimal or no challenge. He therefore directed the Director of Commerce in the ministry and the Chairman of Good Morning Market Committee to supervise the allocation of spaces and smooth resettlement of the displaced traders and report back to him thereafter.

On the movement of cattle market to the Omumauzor facility, Chief Okiyi assured the traders that the ministry is already grading the road to the location while the Governor has directed the state ministry of works to commence full reconstruction of the road using rigid pavement technology and hinted that the state ministry of transport will release new guidelines on the movement of articulated vehicles into and out of Aba next week as approved by the Governor.

The new abattoir we are doing at Omumauzor is an ultra modern facility with water, multiple slaughter slabs and other provisions that will make life easier for our people. While we have paid for most of the work being done we are confident that normal activities can go on while we complete what is remaining to be fixed. It is better to do that than wait for another accident to happen or for an outbreak of a disease. The Governemental will clear the closed abattoir, fumigate it and also dredge the area where the market was previously located as well as demolish all the shanties used by criminal elements to hide and perpetuate crimes against law abiding citizens”.

Continuing, the Commissioner said, “Let me assure you that the Government of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu will not ignore or neglect our traders. We are poised to prevent future occurrences of the type of fatal accident we witnessed recently by providing alternative and safer locations for our traders.

We are also putting a mechanism in place to stop trailers and other articulated trucks from entering Aba before nightfall. I strongly advise that all those in the affected locations move immediately to enable us to do the needful”, he concluded.

Responding, the traders thanked the Government for the swift response to the distress calls made when the accident occurred Thursday and assured that they will partner with the government to ensure seamless relocation and resettlement of all the concerned traders.
