I Will Not Play Godfather’s Role After My Tenure - Udom Emmanuel

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel has disclosed that he has no intention to rule the state through proxy after leaving power in 2023.

He said he was not ready to arrogate to himself the powers of a godfather regarding the emergence of a new governor next year.

This was stated by the governor while receiving the leadership and members of the Ibom Patriots, a socio-political group based in the state, at the Government House in Uyo.

The group, which paid a solidarity visit to the governor, declared support for the choice of Pastor Umo Eno as Emmanuel’s preferred candidate for the upcoming governorship election in the state.

The governor, who described the Ibom Patriots as a group of dignified men and women, expressed gratitude for the visit, adding that it was the first official visit by a group for such a purpose.

He described Akwa Ibom as a state named after God and loved by Him, and urged the people to handle state matters with such consciousness.

Emmanuel stated, “The era of godfatherism in politics is gone in Akwa Ibom. It is the government of the people, for the people, and by the people.

“God is interested in the people and God is about the people. We are going into an era where power has changed hands into the hand of the Holy Spirit so that no man can boast that I did this or I did that.

“I will never arrogate to myself that kind of power. You’ll never hear me even one day say to even a councillor that I made you a councilor.

“All power belongs to God. It is God, who makes people what they are and not man; so, we must not arrogate such powers to ourselves.”

The governor, who spoke on the crises in the country, said he was confident that God must have chosen him to lead the state for a reason.

He asserted that he had done his best to serve the state during his tenure, and expressed optimism that his successor would build on what he had done and even surpass his record when he emerges.

Emmanuel added, “Before I came, who knew that we would go through what we went through in that period of recession. It’s only God, who knew what was going to be ahead and made me here. Today, even if Akwa Ibom people do not appreciate it, I think the whole world can beat their chest and say this guy has not done badly.

“I know the sacrifices we made; I know what it took and I know how much we did to be where we are today. I also believe the person coming will do much better than I have done.”

Affirming that Eno had the required humility for the service of the state, he said, “Nobody can serve 7.2 million people if you are not humble at heart. If you are a proud person, you cannot serve the people because at some points, there will be a need to play the fool and it takes a humble person to play the fool so that peace may reign.”

In his remarks, the Chancellor of the Ibom Patriots and leader of the delegation, Obong Inuaeyen, said the group was fully behind the governor, not just for the office, but as a grand patron of the group.

Inuaeyen expressed confidence in the Eno project in the best interest of the state, especially to sustain the peace and prosperity established by the Emmanuel administration.

He called on the people to desist from all sorts of personal attacks on the governor on social media platforms, describing the office of the governor as representing the collective dignity of the Akwa Ibom people.

Premier League giants Manchester United reportedly view Spain boss Luis Enrique as a potential candidate to become the club’s new head coach ahead of next season.

Ralf Rangnick is currently in charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis, but he will step aside this summer to take on a consultancy role at Old Trafford.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be the favorite for the role, with a recent report claiming that the majority of the United players wanted the former Spurs manager to be appointed.

However, according to ESPN, Enrique is being considered as a candidate, with Man United chiefs believing that he has the necessary credentials and ‘winning track record’ to bring success to the club.

The 51-year-old started his managerial career at Barcelona B before taking charge of Roma and Celta Vigo ahead of a return to Barcelona in 2014.

He led the La Liga giants to two league titles, three Copa del Rey crowns, and the Champions League during a highly successful spell, while he guided Spain to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and runners-up spot in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.

United allegedly believes that the Spaniard’s credentials as a footballer and experience of managing world-class players make him an ideal candidate for the position.

Adidas Ends Sponsorship Deal With Zouma Over Attack On Cat

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma has lost his sponsorship deal with Adidas after being caught kicking and slapping his pet cat in a video.

Zouma, 27, has been fined £250,000 by West Ham while his two cats have been seized by the RSPCA following the sickening video which was initially posted on Snapchat by his brother Yoan.

West Ham manager David Moyes controversially decided to play Zouma in his side’s 1-0 victory over Watford on Tuesday evening, although the French defender was booed by both sets of supporters during the game.

Vitality has already announced that it has suspended its sponsorship deal with West Ham following Zouma’s actions.

But now Adidas has confirmed that its own deal with Zouma, which began last year, will be terminated in response to the video.

A statement from Adidas read: “We have concluded our investigation and can confirm Kurt Zouma is no longer an Adidas contracted athlete.”

Adidas had earlier said: “No animal should be subject to cruel and unwarranted abuse.”

In a statement released on Wednesday, West Ham claimed that Zouma is ‘extremely remorseful’ and is ‘co-operating fully’ with the RSPCA’s investigation.

“West Ham United can confirm that the club is supporting an RSPCA investigation into the actions of Kurt Zouma in the video circulated online this week,” the statement read.

“Kurt and the club are cooperating fully with the investigation and the player has willingly complied with the steps taken in the initial stage of the process, including delivering his family’s two cats to the RSPCA for assessment. Kurt is extremely remorseful and, like everyone at the club, fully understands the depth of feeling surrounding the incident and the need for action to be taken.

“Separate to the RSPCA’s investigation and pending further sanction once the outcome of that process is determined, West Ham United can confirm that Kurt Zouma has been fined the maximum amount possible following his actions in the video that circulated. The player has immediately accepted the fine, which both he and the club agreed will be donated to animal welfare charities.

“West Ham United would like to reiterate our condemnation of Kurt’s actions and make it clear that the matter continues to be handled with the utmost seriousness. However, we believe it is now important to allow the RSPCA to conduct their investigation in a fair and thorough manner and will be making no further comment at this stage.”

FIFA Approves Ademola Lookman Switch To Nigeria

FIFA on Thursday approved Ademola Lookman’s switch from England to Nigeria.

Lukman was not able to play for the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, because he was yet to get clearance from the world football governing body.

The Leicester City winger in the past represented England at U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels.

This is why ex-Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, initially included the 24-year-old in his provisional list for the AFCON.

Lukman will now be eligible to play in the 2022 World Cup playoff against Ghana in March.

Supreme Court Declares Executive Order 10 Unconstitutional

The Supreme Court has declared as unlawful and unconstitutional the Executive Order 10 (EO10) issued by President Muhammadu Buhari on the funding of State Judiciary and Legislature.

In a split decision on Friday, majority of the court’s seven-member panel agreed that the President exceeded his constitutional powers in issuing the EO10.

Six out of the seven members of the panel proceeded to void and set aside the EO10.

The majority decision also held that it was not the responsibility of the Federal Government to fund the capital and recurrent expenditures of the superior courts created for States under Section six of the Constitution.

Motorists along the popular Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road will soon heave a sigh of relief as the contractor, Heartland Construction Company Ltd concludes an arrangement to commence total reconstruction of the federal road linking South East and Akwa Ibom State.

The road has for a long time been a source of worry to road users along that axis with its attendant incessant carnages.

The federal government had in 2017, awarded the contract for the total rehabilitation of the road but the project was stalled due to paucity of funds until December 2021 when the federal government approved its total reconstruction under the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Road Tax Credit Scheme.

Addressing newsmen Thursday at Oboro Ikwuano Yard of the firm after inspection of some portions of the 50km road, the Managing Director, Mr. Fayez Kuacaf, said they had been paid mobilisation fee by the federal government.

He said that the company had already started mobilising their equipment to the site for immediate commencement of the project which he added, was expected to be delivered in two years’ time other things being equal.

Mr. Kuacaf said that after tackling a 10 kilometer stretch from Umuahia to Oboro Ikwuano to make for the easy passage from the state capital, then attention would be given to other failed portions of the road.

His words: “We are not here for palliative work; we have come to begin the total reconstruction work.
“We have already started mobilising equipment to site. Now that government has secured the much-needed funds for the project, we will expedite the work.

“We don’t plan sitting and letting the money fester in the bank account. We want to work to get paid.”

Asked when exactly work would begin on the project, the MD said “immediately”, but added that certain arrangements “like security arrangement” has to be put in place.

“We have received payment and we have to start work almost immediately. More equipment is on the way. As we speak, Lowbirds from our Center workshop are on the way. We have made huge investments to increase the number of equipment to bring to site. Now that something has been released we need to begin work”.

Asked what percentage of the N13.4 billion contract sum had been released to the company, Mr. Kuacaf, said ” five percent”, but expressed optimism that government would not renege in its promises to release more funds as work progressed.

“As long as something continues to come as we have been promised. We have faith in the Government that we will be fully paid as we deliver.”

On the issue of the right of way, the firm said the Ministry of Work was handling the matter and would deal accordingly.

Speaking with newsmen, member representing Ikwuano-Umuahia federal constituency, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, expressed joy over the development, saying the intervention meant that the pressures he had been mounting on the Ministry of Works and the contractor had yielded fruits.

The lawmaker who said he felt very hopeful and expectant, expressed optimism that very soon the road would be delivered to alleviate the plights of his constituents and other road users.

“During my meeting with the Minister of Works and the Contractor last week I told them the urgency of the road and to take advantage of the dry season”, he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari

Ahead of the 2023 general election, President Muhammadu Buhari has warned diplomats serving in the country to keep their focus on diplomatic assignments and steer clear of Nigeria’s local politics.

The President spoke yesterday while presenting Letters of Credence to four foreign diplomats at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The President had, last October, issued the same warning during a similar ceremony for 11 diplomats.

President Buhari, who welcomed the Ambassadors of Czech Republic, Zdenek Krejci; Italy’s Stephano De Leo; Spain’s Juan Ignacio Sell Sanz and Israel’s Michael Shual Freeman to Nigeria, said: “You are assuming your diplomatic responsibilities in Nigeria at very interesting political period as Nigeria’s national elections are due in early 2023.

“As you settle down in the face of these developments, it is my hope that you will also be guided by diplomatic practice, to ensure that your activities remain within the limits of your profession as you monitor the build-up to and the conduct of the general elections next year.”

The President sought the support of the envoys in tackling rising global insecurity, and the strengthening of communality.

“We are living in unprecedented times and with so many uncertainties, especially with the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in global insecurity, and the devastation of our environments caused by Climate Change, among other existential threats to our collective peace, progress, and shared values.

“Different factors that accounted for these challenges go beyond the abilities of any single country to effectively contain alone. Matters of security have become the business of all the nations of the world to work closely together to build consensus in order to overcome these challenges,” he said.

“For us in Nigeria,” President Buhari told the diplomats, “we continue to make steady progress, despite the daunting challenges, especially in the areas of insecurity, the fight against corruption, diversification of the economy, and our efforts in promoting good governance, amongst other aspirations.”

The President noted that Nigeria’s differences and divergence in culture and religion have contributed immensely in cementing national unity as well as spurring religious tolerance and respect for one another.

He urged the ambassadors to build lasting friendships while performing their duties to go beyond diplomatic assignments in Nigeria.

Also, President Buhari yesterday hosted the Ambassador of Senegal in a farewell audience at the State House in Abuja.

The President asked him to convey the congratulations of Nigeria to President Macky Sall on the victory of the Teranga Lions at the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“I’m sending the congratulations reluctantly, because our own country got beaten in the tournament,” the President jocularly told Babacar Matar Ndiaye.

President Buhari hailed the envoy for a successful tour of duty in Nigeria, which lasted nearly four years, saying: “Our relationship is very strong. I congratulate your President for keeping the country together. Please, extend my best wishes to him.”
