NSCDC Warns Fuel Marketers Against Hoarding, Hiking Price

The Kwara Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned petroleum marketers against hoarding and selling fuel above the recommended pump price.

The warning is contained in a statement signed by Mr. Babawale Afolabi, spokesperson of the command, and issued to newsmen on Sunday in Ilorin.

“They should not create artificial scarcity, through hoarding of the products,” the statement said.

It quoted the State Commandant, Mr. Makinde Ayinla, as giving the warning while inspecting some petrol stations in Ilorin.

“The Command will not hesitate to seal any erring filling station and prosecute the owners,” he said.

The commandant, represented by Mr. Yusuf Ayinde, Head of Anti-Vandal Unit, read the riot act to the stations that reportedly refused to sell fuel.

“Based on intelligence, some filling stations had been accused of selling petrol for as much as N250, which is above the recommended pump price of N165,” he said.

The statement said that some fuel stations “were caught in the act and were ordered to revert to the recommended price.”

Some of the stations visited were NNPC in the Surulere Area, Topland and Demo at Amilegbe, Total Comfort and Oilfield at Ita-Amo.

The statement said the exercise would continue on Monday with the inspection of more filling stations.

NDLEA Declares DCP Abba Kyari Wanted

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has declared the suspended head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) Abba Kyari wanted for alleged drug trafficking.

The NDLEA said investigation has revealed that Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, is a member of drug syndicate which operates across the globe.

Spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, stated in a news briefing on Monday.

He said it was unfortunate that some law enforcement agents who should be partners in the pursuit of the mandate of fighting drug abuse are at the forefront of breaking the law aiding and abetting drug trafficking in the country.

Babafemi said Kyari was invited by NDLEA for debriefing on Thursday, February 10 but up till the close of office hours on Friday, February 11, the suspended policeman was yet to respond.

“Today, we are forced to declare one of such law enforcement agents wanted in the person of suspended DCP Abba Kyari, the erstwhile Commander of Intelligence Response Team (IRT) at the Force Intelligence Bureau of the Nigerian Police Force.

“With the intelligence at our disposal, the Agency believes strongly that DCP Kyari is a member of a drug cartel that operates the Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria illicit drug pipeline, and he needs to answer questions that crop up in an ongoing drug case in which he is the principal actor. His failure to cooperate forced the hand of the Agency and that is the reason for this press briefing.

“Let me give a synopsis of what transpired. The saga started on Friday, January 21, 2022, when DCP Kyari initiated a call to one of the NDLEA officers in Abuja at 2:12 pm. When the officer returned the call two minutes later, Kyari informed him he was coming to see him, to discuss an operational matter after the Juma’at service.

“He appeared at the agreed venue of the meeting with the officer and went straight to the crux of the matter. This was it: His team had intercepted and arrested some traffickers that came into the country from Ethiopia with, according to him, 25kg of cocaine.

“He proposed a drug deal whereby he and his team are to take 15kg of the cocaine and leave 10kg for the prosecution of the suspects arrested with the illicit drug in Enugu.

“In the meantime, the purloined cocaine will be replaced with a dummy worth 15kg. He asked the NDLEA officer to persuade men of the FCT Command, to play along as well.

“Now, anybody who is in touch with the reality of the renewed drug war by NDLEA since January 18, 2021, would know that that was a tall order because our officers and men have rededicated themselves to the war against illicit drugs and what Kyari was asking for was not tenable, not in this new dispensation, not with the new NDLEA.

“We can recall that one of our officers was in the same situation in May 2021 when a drug kingpin, Ejiofor Felix Enwereaku, flew from Brazil to Nigeria to negotiate the release of a 27.95 kg shipment of cocaine intercepted at the MMIA.

“The drug lord offered a bribe of $24, 500, but our officer placed duty above pecuniary interest. We all know how the episode ended. That is the ethos of the new NDLEA. And our officer proved it again this time by reporting to the authorities.

“By 11: 05 am on Monday, January 24, after the Agency gave the officer the green light to play along, he and Kyari began a WhatsApp call for the rest of the day. The officer conveyed “their” willingness to play the game.

“At this point, Kyari disclosed that the 15kg (already taken out) was shared between the informants that provided information for the seizure and he and his men of the IRT of the Nigerian Police.

“According to him, the informants were given 7kg while his team took 8kg which was already sold.

“He then offered to pay the NDLEA team (that is the officer and the FCT commander) by selling, on their behalf, half of the remaining 10kg, thereby further reducing the original cocaine for the prosecution to just 5kg. At N7m per kilogram, the proceed from the 5kg would amount to N35m, at the exchange rate of N570 per dollar being the black market rate for the day, January 24, 2022. In effect, he would be delivering $61, 400 to the NDLEA team.

“He put pressure on our officer to wrap up the arrangement with the commander of the FCT Command to take custody of the drug and suspects from his men who were on ground in Abuja. At the time, he was speaking from Lagos, where he allegedly travelled for private business.

“The next day January 25, Kyari offered to send his younger brother to deliver the payment while his men deliver the suspects but our officer turned down the suggestion, insisting he would rather deal with him in person and was therefore prepared to wait for him to return from Lagos.

“And by 5: 23 pm, Kyari was in Abuja and met with the officer at the same rendezvous where they had the first meeting.

“In their discussion, he disclosed how his team received the information from a double-crosser who betrayed the traffickers to him, showing a sordid connection between law enforcement agents and the drug underworld; he narrated how acting on the tip-off, his team departed Abuja to Enugu and arrested the traffickers, removed part of the consignment on his instruction and replaced same with dummies.

“He also indicated how to identify the remnant of the original cocaine that would be delivered to NDLEA, five original packages marked with red dots.

“The reason for this was to avoid the dummies being subjected to test. He forwarded a picture of the marked original cocaine package.

“According to the plan, once the 5kg cocaine has been tested in the presence of the suspects and confirmed positive, there would be no need to test the remaining ones, being dummies.

“He also brought with him the money from the sale of the 5kg share of the NDLEA team, a total of $61, 400. Our officer, however, preferred to take the money inside his car. Well, the car was wired with sound and video recorders. And the moment was documented, part of which I will play for you at the end of this briefing.

“So we have a trove of intelligence, hard facts, from chats to photos and video and a detailed transcript of the communication between him and the NDLEA officer.
This is not the place to delve into the details.

“But it is disheartening to hear straight from the horse’s mouth the kind of sleaze engaged in by this team of rogue law enforcement agents led by Kyari, the members of whom he described this way: ‘the boys are very, very sharp, they are very loyal.’

“It is disheartening to hear him say of this rogue team, and I quote: ‘I do take good care of them, and this kind of work is done by only that team.’ It is equally disheartening to hear him give details of another similar operation which they pulled off, three weeks ago, according to him.

“Well, I am not here to wash his dirty linen in the public. But I want us to understand how we arrive at this juncture whereby we are having this press briefing. NDLEA has the mandate to take custody of suspects and consignments of drugs seized by other arms of law enforcement.

“And there is a standard protocol for such transfer. This we duly followed. The suspects and drugs were delivered to us on February 8 but the last part of the process, yet to be completed, is the debriefing of Kyari.

“Gentlemen of the press, DCP Abba Kyari was invited by NDLEA for debriefing on Thursday February 10 through two main channels because there is a whole lot of questions begging for answers.

“The invitation was legitimate and formal according to our protocol. But up till the close of office hours on Friday, February 11, he refused to respond. Up till this moment, he hasn’t responded.

“We are a law-abiding agency of government. We follow due process. In that vein, we will not detain suspects beyond the stipulated period according to the law before we charge them to court. And Kyari must be debriefed before the suspects are arraigned in court.

“Having failed to honour the official invitation, NDLEA has no option but to declare DCP Abba Kyari of the Nigerian Police WANTED, right from this very moment.

“I must say this publicly. We are not unaware of threats to the lives of NDLEA officers involved in this investigation, even as we continue to do our best to protect our officers and men in the line of duty.

“We are making this strong statement to those contemplating harmful action against NDLEA officers. They would only succeed in compounding their problems in the event of the murder of or harm to officers and men of NDLEA.”

EPL: What I Really Think About Manchester United – Neville

Former Manchester United star, Phil Neville, has revealed what he really thinks about the Red Devils amid their poor form of results so far this season.

Manchester United have dropped four points in their last two Premier League fixtures and they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough earlier this month.

Ralf Rangnick’s side currently sits in the fifth position on the Premier League table with 40 points from 24 games.

Their chances of qualifying for the Champions League are currently in danger as West Ham, Arsenal, Wolves, and Tottenham are also challenging for the Premier League top-four position.

But Neville believes it will take some time for Man United to achieve success.

According to him, there is ‘no divine right to win at Man United and the club must be patient.

Neville told Sportsmail: “What I always think about Manchester United, there is no divine right to win. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the club in better shape. They are still producing young players, they are still the biggest club in England, they are just not getting success.”

He added: “Liverpool weren’t getting success. It’s something people are just going to have to accept. And it will take time.”

Communication Minister Lands In Problem As ASUU Declares It's Professorship Illegal Isa Ali Pantami

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has faulted the promotion of Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami, as a professor.

The union after its National Executive Council meeting declared the promotion as “illegal”.

This was declared at a press conference addressed by the President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday.

He said, “You cannot be a minister and a lecturer in a university. It is an encouragement of illegality.

“Pantami has to quit as a minister and be tried for doing double jobs within the same federal system. He is not qualified. Pantami should not be treated as a professor.”

In September 2021, Pantami, alongside seven academics were elevated by the council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri to the position of a professorship at the council’s 186th meeting.

The minister’s elevation has generated controversy, with many faulting FUTO on the promotion of the minister, who was not teaching in the university and whose highest academic attainment was reportedly a lecturer before he ventured into politics.

“We have resolved to sanction ASUU members involved in his promotion and the VC of FUTO,” he added.

Why APC Will Lose Ekiti Governorship Election – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the All Progressives Congress (APC) will lose the June 18 governorship election in Ekiti.

The Bisi Kolawole Campaign Organization (BKCO) listed disengagement of workers, infrastructural decay and insecurity as reasons.

The APC candidate, Biodun Oyebanji had boasted that Governor Kayode Fayemi’s performance will help the party to win.

PDP said the achievements Oyebanji could build on are “banditry that has turned most Ekiti roads to nightmares, kidnappings, workers sack, bad roads (Akure to Ekiti, no road) and looting of public funds.”

A statement on Sunday by BKCO spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, lamented that teachers recently contributed N500 each to pay the ransom demanded by their colleague’s abductors.

He said a former member of the House of Assembly, Edu Mayokun, was kidnapped along Ikere-Igbara Odo road at the weekend.

“Last week, more than 10 people were kidnapped at the Ikole area. Kidnappers have gone to the ridiculous level of collecting food items, cigarettes, alcohol drinks, etc as ransom,” he said.

“In December 2019, when Ekiti people were preparing for Christmas and New Year celebrations, over 1,000 workers of the State University were sacked.”

Olayinka noted that the court judgment directing their reinstatement was yet to be obeyed.

He said over 100 indigenes picked during the November 2020 Teaching Service Commission recruitment were yet to get employment letters after paying N5,000 each for induction, handbook, and others.

“In September 2019, three students of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), were brutally murdered by security aides of Fayemi’s wife”, the statement recalled.

The PDP added that it awaits what the APC and Oyebanji will tell the people when they mount the campaign podium in the coming weeks.

”We have been watching you over the past two and half years. You have been very wonderful.

“You have been consistent in terms of service delivery to the people of Lagos and indeed this country. You were focused,” he said.

”One good term you’re doing deserves another term”, the Yobe lawmaker stated.

Lawan commended Adeola for his contributions to the Senate and efforts to uplift his constituents through empowerment.

There are speculations that political forces are rooting for Lagos Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola to become governor in 2023.

Last week, the 50-year-old lawyer issued a statement denying a plan to succeed Sanwo-Olu. He accused enemies of trying to spoil their relationship.

The Lagos State government has ordered the prosecution of the developer of a three-story building that collapsed in Onike area of the State, on Saturday.

Recall that a three-story building under construction had collapsed on Saturday afternoon at No. 16, Akanbi Crescent, off Adesina Street, Harvey, Yaba.

The incident claimed five persons, including an IT student, simply identified as Damola,

A statement issued by the spokesman of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mukaila Sanusi, said the Ministry’s Commissioner, Dr. Idris Salako, gave the directive on Sunday evening.

Salako expressed regrets on the needless loss of lives and property which he said was due to unlawful conduct and antics of defying stop-work orders, as well as evading supervision.

He further stated that the State Building Control Agency  “had been mandated to liaise with the police so as to proceed to court and press charges against the developer, who has been held for violating the State’s physical planning laws.”

“It is hoped that his prosecution would send a strong warning to all recalcitrant developers that it was mandatory to Build Right and engage professionals in constructing buildings in Lagos State, as we will not hesitate to bring to book whoever errs against the law,” he added.

Salako added that excavation on the site was still ongoing and will continue until it is leveled to ground zero.

2023 Presidency: Group Wants NASS To Investigate Emefiele Over Alleged Diversion Of Funds

The Patriotic Front of Nigeria (PFN), a youth-based civil society group, has called on members of the National Assembly, to as a matter of urgent public importance, investigate alleged cases of financial misappropriation against the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele, the group alleged, had used the many CBN’s intervention funds for Nigerians in the post-COVID-19 era and other resources of the apex bank, to service his political associates and for his 2023 presidential ambition.

The PFN, in a statement signed by the Convener, Comrade Tope Badmus and made available to newsmen Monday morning, alleged that Emefiele was consulting to contest Nigeria’s President under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The group also advised the CBN Governor to “immediately resign” his appointment, so as to protect the image, integrity, and sanctity of the apex bank, which should be known for political neutrality and professionalism.

“The Patriotic Front of Nigeria (PFN) has watched with growing concern, the ongoing activities to actualize the presidential ambition of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, in view of the inherent abuse that has seen him divert CBN’s resources in pursuit of his personal agenda.

“In recent weeks, Emefiele has personalized the apex bank’s resources for organizing political rallies and for questionable donations to political activities that have no bearing on the CBN’s role as a regulator of the financial sector.

“It is most unfortunate that the CBN Governor is now doling out CBN’s funds to political jobbers that are organizing campaigns or other events for him. The practice increased because Mr. Emefiele continues to oblige such requests. While this trend was initially perplexing, it is now clear that Mr. Emefiele’s unethical handling of CBN’s resources is directly linked to his political agenda.

“In addition to this unethical behavior, all the intervention programmes of the CBN under Mr. Emefiele are conduits for funneling public recourses to politicians, especially in the north, who he is banking on for support. These Emefiele’s political associates in turn use the funds given in the guise of loans to service their political careers by allocating such interventions to their political underlings.

“Laudable programmes that were intended to provide succor to Nigerians and strengthen the economy were hijacked for political patronage by the CBN Governor, who should have been ensuring neutrality in the administration of these programmes.

“In view of the foregoing and the worsening performance of the naira under his watch, PFN hereby calls on Mr. Godwin Emefiele to toe the path of honor by immediately resigning as the Governor of CBN to pursue his political ambition. He cannot continue to imperil the economy with his politicization of an organization that is programmed to run on neutrality and professionalism.

“Also, we demand that the Senate and the House of Representatives investigate Mr. Emefiele’s tenure as CBN Governor to establish the extent to which the institution was converted into the finance department of his presidential campaign organization. The National Assembly must do the needful to succeed in this investigation”, the group said.

According to the group, “the real tragedy is that Nigeria’s economy has taken hits after hits while Mr. Emefiele focuses on his political sojourn, which he reportedly plans to actualize on the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP). He has practically abandoned the actual running of the CBN to his pals in the Bankers Committee, which has effectively left economic decisions in the hand of commercial banks that the CBN is meant to regulate”.

The PFN specifically asserted that “the call from the Green Alliance for Mr. Emefiele to contest for President in 2023 elections is the final proof that his continued stay in his current position no longer serves the CBN’s interest, neither does it portend well for Nigeria and Nigerians. He will now increase the use of CBN resources for organizing his presidential political rallies, which is not good for the economy”.

Am grateful to Allah for his safety, on the distance covered to answer this call of national interests and unity. Your willingness and availability is commended and hopefully, our efforts would be rewarded by the changes we have craved for our nation, Nigeria.

“We can not sweep under the carpet, the changes needed by our dear country Nigeria. Economically, socially, infrastructural and every other areas affecting Nigerians. These negativity can be put to an end. we have to put a stop to it. Nigeria is our country, no foreigner can build Nigeria, it is our indigenous duties and responsibilities to build our nation.

“The youths today are facing the ill torture the economy is melting on the society. Sometimes, it’s unconsciously mortared, ‘what the upcoming generation would look like’, if we’re unable to have a pause, reflect and find solutions to our nation’s economic predicaments.

This negative tendencies could lead to the unknown and for these reasons, We gathered with the views to effect that change, at the leadership helm of the nations affairs, with a right choice for the 2023 presidential race.

“Our stands on who succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari should be our foremost step in this revolution to making it right for Nigerians. For a country like ours, developments to improve our economy can only be productive, when there’s peace and security. Peace can only be achieved when all stakeholders of the United Nigeria are given sense of belonging with equal rights, fairness and justice, while, insecurity is the product of crumbling economy, where people take shorter cuts to their daily bread, committing atrocities.

“To this effects, with nature facing the wheel of leadership to the southeast, following the trends and standards of our earlier compatriots, engraved in Federal character, which had been observed in sequence, since 1999.

“ It is preeminently unnecessary to thwart what the future has in stock for Nigerians. We believe and stand by this wheel of leadership to favor Nigerians meaningfully, irrespective of the region we’re from (Northern Nigeria), having leaders from the southeast to rally with.

“Having dogged through profiles of leaders from the southeast region, we were able to at a glance, settle for the like of the former governor of Abia state and the Senate Chief whip of the 9th Assembly, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu. He’s indeed a unifier of the highest order. His experiences anchoring on significant ends of the world, is a quality to recon with in piloting the nations affairs.

“Known beyond his political contributions to Nation building, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, have to himself a first financial address other than politics, at his earlier stage of life, as a businessman of integrated qualities. The trends of his political foot paths could be traced to his grassroots and his endeavors, in public services.

“He’s internationally recognized by the United States of America as a prosperous businessman of good humor, conducts, decent and of great character. He had accumulated to his archives, many other merited and distinguished awards of recognitions from Europe, Asia and Africa continents for human profitable involvements that had in a way, revived the economy of some Africa countries.

“We have the believe that, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, a man with such qualities, numerous to mention, would have lot to offer if stood by, in this path of searching for experienced leaders to pilot the nation’s economy and at same time, keep sacrosanct our unity, in line with federal character.

“In this congress, with the powers vested on me as the Northern Youth Awareness for Orji Uzor Kalu, in the presence of the coordinators from the 19 northern states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, permit me to categorically unveil publicly and officially our unwavering support for the former governor of Abia State and the Chief whip of the Senate, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu.

“We are assuring the senate chief whip that, the cost for his presidential ticket would be on the shoulders of the Northern Youths Political Awareness for Orji Uzor Kalu, to bear, in this coming 2023 presidential elections.

“We will be committed to the running’s of his campaigns here in the North, for Dr Orji Uzor Kalu and we will in the shortest time, make public our modalities to achieving a greater Nigeria with the sole interest of nations unity, to be our first anchored priorities.

“We, the Northern Youth Political Awareness for Orji Uzor Kalu, will mount pressures on northern leaders, those with the intentions of vying for the presidency in 2023. Irrespective of the Northern political advantage and decision making of the nation, the northerner have trust as our trademark and also, we have much respect for other regions in Nigeria and we stand against any abuse of such political privilege, for Nigeria is a nation married in tribes, religion and culture.
