Driver Sets Self On Fire To Protest Arrest By LASTMA Officials Over Alleged Traffic Violation

0

There was a mild drama Tuesday at Ajao Estate area of Lagos when a bus driver set himself on fire to prevent officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) from impounding his vehicle.

It was learnt that the driver was arrested for allegedly violating the state traffic laws.

Witnesses said while the driver was trying to see how he could remedy the situation by begging the traffic officers, one of them forcefully took over the steering wheel from him.

Noticing what was about to happen to him, the commercial bus driver grabbed a Jerry can filled with petrol that was in the bus and emptied its content on himself.

He was said to have brought out a lighter from his pocket and set himself ablaze.

Some of the witnesses said that they heard the driver saying that it was better to die than to live and watch his only means of livelihood taken away from him.

On seeing what was happening to their colleague, other drivers sympathetic to his course converged and started pelting the LASTMA officials with stones.

Soon the drivers were joined by urchins also known as area boys to attack the state government officials.

Other drivers parked their buses and tried to put out the fire on the burning man.

One of the drivers who simply gave his name as Kazeem said the situation caused heavy traffic and pandemonium as motorists abandoned their vehicles while commuters scampered for safety.

He said that the driver was rushed to the hospital,” but I don’t think he will survive the burns. The damage done on him was colossal.”

Another driver simply identified as Wadada, said the LATSMA officials were treating them like slaves.

“They arrest us at any slightest mistake. As they are chasing us like cats pursuing mice, so also motor touts and local government officials chasing us up and down. They extort us without mercy.”

The spokesman of LASTMA, Olumide Filade, had not responded to calls or text messages sent to him on the issue as of press time.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, promised to call back on the issue but had not done so as of press time.

Youth Group Seeks Arrest Of EbubeAgu Operatives In Imo Over Unlawful Acts

0

Following the reports of activities of the Ebubeagu security outfit in some communities in Imo State, youths under the aegis of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders have called for their arrest describing their actions as wicked and barbaric.

The youth group while condemning the overzealousness of the security apparatus, expressed displeasure on the jungle justice on suspects.

A statement by the President General of COSEYL, Goodluck Ibem, made available to newsmen in Owerri on Tuesday said, “We are not in the stone age where anyone or persons will wake up one morning, accuse someone of being a criminal and kill the said person.

“We are in the 21st century where we have the rule of law and the constitution guarding the people and government activities as regards governance. For Ebubeagu security operatives to wake up and start killing Igbo youths in whatever guise is totally unacceptable.

“Most of the houses in the affected communities have been burnt down and destroyed while the little few persons who escaped being killed have run away leaving those communities empty without anyone or animal sited anywhere. Those towns are now ghost communities, without any living thing.

“One of the disturbing incidences in the community was a situation where a woman received matchets cuts in her head, hand and other parts of her body because of her inability to provide her husband or tell the Ebubeagu operatives where her husband went to.

“This is unbecoming of a sane society. Ndi-Imo and Ndi-Igbo must rise and condemn in its entirety this despicable act by these so-called Ebubeagu security operatives.

“The courts remain the last arbiter and no one has the constitutional right or powers to take the life of another man at will. If anyone is arrested on suspicion of being a criminal, he or she should be taken to court for the court to try such persons involved. It is unlawful and a criminal act to torture, maim or kill anyone on the premise of being a criminal.

“Houses and properties that were destroyed in those Communities, which court gave such orders? These operatives just assumed the duties of the courts and went ahead to destroy peoples homes and assets without recourse to the law of the land. Too sad.”

“We warn those Ebubeagu security operatives to stop forthwith the extrajudicial killings now and we demand that those found waiting or culpable of extrajudicial killings in Imo State should be made to face the music. Enough said,” Ibem stated.

Despite Probe Over Drug Offences, Abba Kyari Should Be Extradited To US Fraud Allegation — Lawyer Inibehe Effiong

0

A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has said that the Federal Government should not allow the alleged drug crimes linked to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head, Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, Abba Kyari, stop his extradition to the United States.

Effiong said this on Monday during his appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today in reaction to Kyari’s arrest by authorities of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

While still on suspension and prior to the arrest, the embattled police boss was expected to face prosecution in 2021 for his alleged role in a $1m scam allegedly perpetrated by international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka, Hushpuppi and five others.

“The question of his extradition should have been determined before now,” the human rights lawyer said.

“Now that the NDLEA has added another aspect to what has become the litany of criminal allegations against Abba Kyari, it, therefore, begs the question; will this slow his extradition or not?

“My perception is that if the Federal Government is truly honest about this case, the starting point is for the Police Service Commission to immediately conclude the investigation against Abba Kyari and apportion punishment accordingly.”

“I am hoping that the Federal Government will not use Abba Kyari’s indictment by the NDLEA as an excuse for not subjecting him to the process of extradition to the US.”

Kyari and four other police officers were arrested on Monday after being declared wanted for alleged links to drug crimes.

2023: North Central More Deserving Of Presidency Than South East — Yahaya Bello

0

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on Tuesday said the North-Central region is more deserving of the Presidency in 2023 than the South-East region.

Mr Bello made the assertion during a chat with journalists at the State House after a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor noted that the North-Central has been the most marginalised since 1960, when the country attained her independence.

The Governor, who was at the State House to brief the President on the state of insecurity in Kogi, said the North-Central has never produced the president nor vice president of the country, and it was only fair that it produce the next President of the country in the 2023 general elections.

On insecurity, he said the issue is over-hyped and could be politically motivated.

He urged a reduction of the over-reliance on security agencies.
