I Never Travelled To Europe With PDP Governors To Choose Party’s Presidential Candidate, Says Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has refuted trending reports that he and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors travelled to Europe to determine the 2023 presidential and vice presidential candidates for the party.

The governor accused those behind the rumour of deliberately sowing seeds of discord in a bid to ruin the chances of the PDP in 2023 general elections.

Wike, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, in a statement by his media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, said PDP governors had been inundated with calls following a text message being peddled by a chieftain of the party, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, that some governors had embarked on a week-long trip to Europe to determine those who would be presidential and vice presidential candidates of the party in 2023.

“I have always said to people in PDP, nobody should cause a division among the governors. We are trying as much as we can to build the party back and see that in 2023 PDP takes over governance. But, I have some suspicion that people like Raymond Dokpesi are not really sincere to the party and I think I’m convinced that Dokpesi appears to be working for APC.”

He continued: “I don’t understand where Raymond Dokpesi of this information from, this rumour that governors travelled to Europe to decide who will be the presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate of PDP. I wonder why governors will travel to Europe to take such a decision.”

The governor said while he and his colleagues didn’t have anything against Dokpesi campaigning for the 2019 PDP presidential candidate and former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he should be circumspect and desist from causing confusion in the party.

“I’ve told Raymond Dokpesi that there is nothing wrong with you preaching for the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar the Waziri of Adamawa, a very experienced man, an intelligent man, a strategist. But don’t destroy other people because of this. Because when you destroy them, it will be difficult for PDP to win election in 2023.”

The Rivers State governor implored Atiku, who he described as a well-known political strategist to rein in Dokpesi from spreading dangerous rumours capable of polarising stakeholders in the party.

Wike noted that in 2019, PDP governors, without the prompting of Dokpesi rallied round Atiku and would do so again if he picks the party’s presidential ticket.

Wike also dismissed insinuation that PDP governors, particularly, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, wants to usurp the function of National Working Committee in a bid to impose the party’s candidate in Osun State.

He explained that Makinde, who is the only PDP governor in the South West geopolitical zone, deserves to be consulted as it concerns the forthcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.

Wike said it would be politically wrong for people outside the South West geopolitical zone to determine what happens in Osun, without the contribution or better still, input of the Oyo State governor.

300,000 N-Power Beneficiaries To Get CBN Loan — FG

The Federal Government, on Thursday, said that there was an exit programme for about300,000 N-Power beneficiaries to get loans from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

The Minister of Human Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouk, made the revelation during the weekly ministerial media briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

She said the government had a plan of putting about 300,000 applicants on a training programme while the CBN will provide them loan.

The minister said: “On the N-Power, thank you for bringing that up and you asked another question if anybody really benefited from the N-programme.

“We have 500,000 that have been on the programme with Batch A and Batch B being on the programme for four years and two years.

“The Batch A was on the program for about four years and we were giving them N30,000 stipends monthly. And the Batch B benefited for two years.

“So yes, the N-power beneficiaries have benefited because these are people who were not employed who had nothing to do, were engaged and were being paid stipends to use to earn a decent living. 

“On the exit programme. Yes, we have an exit strategy in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“And out of this 500,000, about 300,000 indicated interest to be put on an exit programme where you can be trained on different skills and they will be given loans by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for them to start their businesses.

“We have gone far. We are in the process of training those that have indicated interest. And I’m sure before the end of this quarter, these people will be given these loans by the CBN.

“As a government agency, the ministry does not give loans. So, we have to partner with those institutions that can do that.

“Unfortunately, some of these people were not very wise in their savings. But for anybody that’s really serious, most of them have saved.

“About 109,000 of the N-Power beneficiaries have become entrepreneurs.

“They are now employers of labour and we have evidence of that which can be provided to you.”

The Oyo State Government on Thursday said it is set to engage in talks with all area boys and cult groups in the state to foster peace.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, said this after a meeting behind closed doors with representatives of militant groups like Agbekoya and Odua People’s Congress and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.

Olatunbosun said the state government, in collaboration with all the militant groups, was determined to proffer peaceful solutions to the unrest between area boys and cult groups, noting that the time to end bloodshed in the state was now.

Speaking further, Olatunbosun said the meeting aimed to solve the problem from the roots, disclosing that the state government would work closely with security agencies and leaders of the militant groups to meet with the cult sects and mediate between warring parties.

He said, “The State Executive Council is aware of the activities of cultists and cult groups in the state. We hope to hold a meeting with them.

“Oyo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, is determined to put a stop to this clash among cult groups and area boys. To this end, we, in collaboration with all the militant groups in the state, are taking the message of peace to the den of these cultists.

“We will try to convince them to be disarmed and return to their homes peacefully. Afterwards, there will be a clampdown on the activities of area boys and cult groups who fail to cooperate with us.”

The 36 Governors Are Nigeria’s Problem, Says Clark

Elder statesman and the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Chief Edwin Clark, has said the 36 states governors are Nigeria’s problem, arguing that wanting to be in the good books of President Muhammadu Buhari has blinded them to their rights.

Clark also called for restructuring of the country before the 2023 general election, warning that without restructuring Nigeria first, the outcome of the elections would have no (positive) impact on Nigerians.

Chief Clark made the declarations in an interview with Arise TV, where he also bemoaned the level of insecurity in the country, saying there is “no guarantee for safety during the elections.”

Accusing the state governors of compounding the country’s woes, Cark said: “These governors want to be in the good books of the President and as such don’t know their rights.

“Our 36 state governors are our problem. This is because they don’t know their right. They only want to protect themselves.

“Terrorists are bombing their states and they are running around Buhari in Abuja to collect money,” he said.

“Restructure Nigeria so we can all be equal. A situation where governors will go to Abuja to collect money and leave their people to suffer would cease to happen,” Clark said.

Chief Edwin Clark recalled that “APC promised restructuring in its 2015 manifesto but disbanded it when it came to power in 2015.”

He said, “because of the pressure from Nigerians,  APC appointed a brilliant governor, el-Rufai (Kaduna State) and others including ex-APC chairman John Oyegun who went round and came up with a report but it was not implemented.”

Former Governor of the State of Osun and Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Thursday, said his successor, Adegboyega Oyetola, waged war against him after he became governor.

Aregbesola spoke in Ikire while addressing a rally held to garner support for his anointed candidate in Saturday’s Osun governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress, Moshood Adeoti.

Speaking in the Yoruba language, Aregbesola said he pleaded with Oyetola for about two years not to fight him, adding that his successor rejected his advice which made him call his people and told them to salvage the party.

He said, “I begged him for two years, I told him that people must not mock us. I told him, that he was heading towards destruction. I served this state with the whole of my heart, I also positioned Oyetola, so that he could succeed me in office.

“When we came to this town (Ikire) for his campaign, we were drenched in rain from the Akire’s palace to this place. He gets to that office, he claimed I am his enemy. Those who contested against him during our party primary he pulled them closer, while he fights me.

“Since Oyetola assumed office, he has waged war against me like I once harmed him. He claimed that I do not want him to emerge as governor, I told him that I heard him and that now he has been governor, what else does he want?

“I begged him for two years, I told him that people must not mock us. I told him that he is heading towards destruction. I begged him for two years. I sent people to help me beg that, he did not have to love me, but he must not fight me; even if he wanted to fight me, he should not abuse me and destroy my legacies.

“All that I told and warned him not to do, was what he did. He opposed what I did; all the things I did together with him for eight years, he opposed and reversed them. He thought he could destroy me through my work; nobody was pushing him, he is pushing himself. He deliberately towed that path. He waged war at me and refused to listen to my pleas until he got rid of me.

“When I observed that he would not listen, I called people together that they should start telling your people that progressives family must not be destroyed. The party chairman, Famodun, that we took away from PDP, he may return to that party, we must not let him lead us astray. Leaders of the party then agreed that we should go back to where we missed the road in 2018.

“When Adeoti was angry with us, he did not abuse us, when we refused to do his will, he protested but he never cursed us. We have realised our mistake. That is why we gave him the ticket of our caucus.”

Oyetola didn’t fight him, he wanted to control his successor, says Akere

Responding, Special Adviser to the governor on Political Affairs, Sunday Akere, said Aregbesola only expressed a personal opinion, insisting that Oyetola did not fight his predecessor.

“Our former principal only expressed a personal opinion which no one was privy to. Oyetola did not fight him. He declared that Oyetola’s tenure was his third term and he wanted to be in charge.

“He also promised those close to him that 80 per cent of them would return as cabinet members which did not happen. The former governor thought the eight-year tenure was an eternity. It has ended but he could not believe that reality. The root cause of these issues are what I just said,” Akere stated.

University Of Oxford Commences Teaching Of Igbo Language

One of the leading universities in the world, University of Oxford, UK has commenced the teaching of English language to its students, ABN TV reports.

Announcing this on a Facebook post, Emmanuel Ikechukwu Umeonyirioha who is the first lecturer to teach Igbo language in the institution expressed gratitude over the development, promising to bring Igbo language and culture to a global limelight.

He said their induction took place on Thursday at which was conducted by the Head of Modern Language Programmes, University of Oxford Language Centre, Marion Sadoux.

According to Umeonyirioha, first Igbo class in the institution will start next week Thursday, 3-4pm.

He said, “It is official that I am the first official Igbo Language lecturer at the number one university in the world, the University of Oxford. Our induction happened today by Marion Sadoux, Head of Modern Language Programmes, University of Oxford Language Centre.

“This became possible in account of the James Currey Society. This is the first time Igbo language will be taught at the university. History has been made.

“I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity. I promise to make the Igbo language and culture known to the world.

“First class starts next week Thursday, 3-4pm, on 12 Woodstock Road.”

Ikpeazu Visits Scene Of Cattle Market Attack In Ukwa West, Vows To Fish Out Perpetrators

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu on Thursday visited the scene of Cattle Market/Abbatoir attack in Omuma Uzo, Ukwa West LGA.of.thr state with a vow to fish out all those who perpetrated the dastardly act and deal with them according to laws of the land.

The Tuesday attack by unidentified hoodlums left no fewer than eight persons dead while other sustained various degrees of injuries.

The governor in a statement by his chief press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka while assuring that investigations on the matter have commenced added that the State Government has the capacity to protect the lives and property of people and residents of the State.

According to the release, the governor disclosed that preliminary investigations show that the dastardly act was not carried out by the youths of the immediate community, adding that the youths were the ones that assisted the victims after the attack.

It read in part, “Governor Ikpeazu assured that the investigation will be deep and all those involved would be identified and dealt with according to the laws of the land. He further informed that government is not going back with the decision of locating the market there but would fortify security there by citing a military base and other security units in the area as well as reinforcing the perimeter fencing around the new market and abattoir. He promised that his government will do all forestall such incident in future.

“Governor Ikpeazu, who regretted that our society still has blood thirsty people who can kill mindlessly, sympathized with the victims and assured that government would continue to find a way to provide succour to those who lost their property to enable them continue with their business. He further said that he will meet with key stakeholders from the area this weekend on the issue.

“The Governor was accompanied on the visit by the Member representing Ukwa West State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon.Godwin Adiele, Executive Chairman of Ukwa West LGA Chairman, Hon. Lagos Police Arrest 7 Traffic Robbers (Photos)

Officials of Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS) this afternoon arrested three traffic robbers at Ikeja City Mall just as National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mile 2 park assisted the police in arresting four notorious traffic robbers in the area.

Four of the suspects, Segun Peters (22), Kabiru Odeh (25), Nurudeen Suraj (22) and Dennis Ikuvbogie (24) were arrested at Mile 2 while having a field day; other suspects, Anifowoshe Kolawole (20), Patrick Ameke (21) and John Britto (27) were picked around Ikeja City Mall based on complaints on their illicit activities around the area.

The Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, had on a tip off on the activities of traffic robbers in Mile 2 this afternoon deployed plain cloth police men to the area to monitor and arrest the suspects.

The NURTW members had hounded down the four suspects before the officers got there. The suspects were thereafter handed over to the police team for investigation and prosecution.

One of the suspects, Nurudeen Suraj was a week ago arrested and detained at Agboju Police Station. He explained that he was released from prison two months ago.

Those arrested in Ikeja were selectively picked up after a petition initiated by the management of Ikeja City Mall on reported incidences of traffic robbery in the area.

The suspects, who were placed under close monitoring before their arrest this afternoon, on most occasion pretend to be beggars and nose mask vendors. They used the ploy to rob motorists and pedestrians visiting the complex.

One of the suspects, Anifowsoshe Kolawole, who had been warned on many occasions by policemen pleaded for leniency.

The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi commended the civilians who provided the intelligence to the police as well as those who assisted the police in arresting the suspects, stressing that, our communities would become safer if people co-operated with the police.

How Abba Kyari Negotiated Deal To Forgo 15 Kilograms Of Cocaine – NDLEA

The NDLEA Act stipulates punishment ranging from jail term, life imprisonment, and property forfeiture for various offenses.

Conspiracy:

Section 20, Part II, Sub-section 14 of the NDLEA Act recommends a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25 years.

Part of the Act reads, “Any person who:

a. Incites, promises, or induces any other person by any means whatsoever to commit any of the offences referred to in this Act: or

b. Conspires with, aids, abets, counsels, attempts to commit or is an accessory to any act or offence referred to in this Act,

Shall be guilty of an offence under this Act and liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25 years.

Tampering with drug

Any person who unlawfully removes, conceals, destroys or in any way tampers with the drug popularly known as cocaine, LSD, heroine or any other similar drug seized from any person or otherwise in the possession of the Agency or any authorised person shall be guilty of an offence under this Act and liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 25 years.

Sale and distribution

1. Any person who, without lawful authority (the proof of which shall lie on him) commits any of the following offences, that is to say

a. Engages in the production, manufacture, extraction preparation, offering for sale, distribution, sale, delivery on any terms whatsoever, brokerage, dispatch, dispatch in transit, transportation, importation or exportation of any narcotic drug or any psychotropic substance contrary to the provisions of the 1961 Convention and its Protocols, or the 1971 Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances 1989.

f. Engages in the manufacture, transportation or distribution of equipment, materials or of any substance listed in the Second Schedule to this Act knowing that such equipment, material or substance are to be used in or for the illicit cultivation, production or manufacture of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances;

g. Engages in the management, organisation or financing of any of the offences under paragraphs (a) to (f) of this subsection

2. The penalties for offences under subsection (1) of this section shall

a. In respect of an offence under paragraphs (a), (b), (d), (e), (f), and (h), be imprisonment for life.

Forfeited Property

For the avoidance of doubt and without any further assurance than this Act, all the properties of a person convicted of an offence under this Act and already the subject of an interim order shall be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Bandits

Bandits have raided the residence of Sarkin Hausawa of Anguwar Azara in Jere, along Abuja-Kaduna highway, Malam Ibrahim Tanko, abducting his wives alongside his four daughters.

Tanko, while confirming the incident to our reporter via telephone, gave the names of his kidnapped wives as Maimuna Ibrahim and Hauwawu Ibrahim.

He said though, Hauwawu, who is his senior wife, was later set free when her captors discovered that she is suffering from high blood pressure.

He said the bandits, who wielded sophisticated weapons, invaded his house around 11:52 pm on Tuesday.

He said he managed to escape using one of the exit doors.

“It was after they searched and couldn’t see me that they went into room where my daughters were sleeping and whisked four of them away at gunpoint,” he said.

The Sarkin Hausawa gave the names of his abducted daughters as Aisha Ibrahim, Farida Ibrahim, Zainab Ibrahim and Hussaina Ibrahim.

According to him, the bandits proceeded to a neighbour’s house and whisked away four residents alongside a nursing mother identified as Laraba Umar.

“In fact, they macheted the woman’s husband until he became unconscious. He is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital at Katari,” he said.

The Sarkin Hausawa said soldiers arrived the area an hour after the bandits had left with their victims.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Kaduna state police command, ASP Mohammed Jalige, said the police were not aware of the incident.

He promised to contact the police area commander of Katari and get back to our reporter but he had not done so as of the time of filing this report.
