The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, today, Monday, February 21, 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to formalize the existing partnership between the organizations in promoting the fight against corruption and economic crimes in Nigeria.

Anti-graft War: EFCC, NYSC Sign MoUSpeaking at the ceremony which took place at the Commission’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa said the event was significant as it cemented their partnership in a document that would serve as guide on what the two agencies would be doing from time to time.

“We are delighted to have you. NYSC has been part of us from the beginning, as we have always had the opportunity of welcoming corps members to help us in one area or another where we have gaps in our staff, even though the sensitivity of what we do requires trained officers, but they are actually helping us a lot,” he said.

Bawa welcomes the suggestion on the revival of joint sensitization initiatives of the two organizations, especially the One Million Man March that was suspended following the outbreak of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director General of the NYSC, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim appreciated the EFCC for the privilege of signing the MoU, stressing that the gesture will move the two agencies’ relationship to the next level. “The Corps members in “NYSC/EFCC Community Development Service” have been embarking on sensitization for the EFCC and the fight against corruption, and I can assure you that the corps members are ever willing as they continue to put in their best in that regard”, he said.

He also requested for the intervention of the EFCC in fishing out fraudsters extorting gullible Nigerians through the social media to influence their posting or redeployment/relocation.

FG Set Set To Launch Campaign Against Money Ritual

Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government is set to launch a national sensitization campaign against the growing scourge of money rituals, which has already claimed many lives, especially those of women and girls, in the country.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced this in Abuja on Monday when he paid a working visit to the corporate headquarters of the Media Trust Limited.

“Gentlemen, our visit today is coming at a time of great concern across the country over the rising cases of ritual murders by unscrupulous people, most of them very young, who are seeking to get rich at all cost. We have therefore decided to use this opportunity to begin the process of raising national awareness on this scourge.

“For those who may still be in doubt, ritual killings have assumed a worrisome dimension in recent years. According to an NGO, Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), 150 women and girls were killed for ritual purposes between January 2018 and December 2021,” he said, while also citing recent ritual killings in other parts of the country.

Alhaji Mohammed said the National Orientation Agency (NOA) is already partnering with religious and traditional organizations as well as NGOs to forge behavioural change, especially among the youth, some of whom, he said, are afflicted by the get-rich-quick syndrome.

He also announced that he has directed the National Film and Video Censors Board, the regulatory body for films and videos in the country, to take the issue of ritual killings into consideration while censoring and classifying films and videos, in addition to engaging with stakeholders in the industry to express the concerns of the government and Nigerians on the need for Nollywood producers to eschew money ritual content in their movies.

The minister called on the media to lend its strong voice to the efforts to stamp out the growing menace of ritual killings.

Alhaji Mohammed said the fact that some ritual killers said they learned the money-making tricks from some social media platforms has further given a fillip to the Federal Government’s campaign to rid social media of unwholesome content.

At least two police officers were on Sunday killed by gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB and its Eastern Security Network, ESN during an attack at Isu police division.

The attackers were said to have come in their numbers at about 11:30pm with at least two Toyota Sienna Buses, a Toyota Camry Car and unspecified number of motorcycles when they launched the attack at the station from the rear axis.

At the station which had no perimeter fencing, the attackers according to PPRO of Imo State police command, CSP Michael Abattam shot sporadically, throwing petrol bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (I.E.D) which set the station on fire.

CSP Abattam said the police operatives of the division immediately, responded by engaging the hoodlums in a gun duel, leading the attackers to flee with varying degrees of bullet wounds.

He added, “The gallant police operatives did not relent, they gave the hoodlums a hot chase and while escaping some ran into Golden Suite Hotel and Isu Villa Hotel respectively, the two hotels were immediately cordoned and raided and in the process , a total of Twelve (12) motorcycles without identification numbers and two vehicles one (1) Lexus RX350 SUV and one (1) Lexus RX330 SUV believed to have been used by the hoodlums were seen and recovered.

“Also seventeen (17) male and a female suspects were arrested and undergoing interrogation.

“However, the fire and Improvised Explosives Devices (IED) affected some vehicles and part of the building of the division, and unfortunately, two police officers paid the supreme prize, while one sustained minor bullet injury on his head.”

Abattam says Commissioner of Police, Imo Command, CP Rabiu Hussaini, while consoling the families of the officers who gallantly lost their lives, appealed to the good people of the state, not to allow terrorists to use their Communities, Hotels or Houses as a meeting point to converge for any nefarious activities.

He then, advised them not to relent in their efforts until all criminal elements and their partners are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

Bail: Abba Kyari Diabetic, Hypertensive – Lawyer Tells Judge

Abba Kyari

Embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, is a diabetic and hypertensive patient, the suspended cop’s lawyer, Cynthia Ikena, told Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

The lawyer also prayed the court to release his client on bail but the judge refused the plea, saying the suit contained weighty allegations that would require the response of the Federal Government.

Kyari was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on February 14, 2022, for alleged links in drug-related crimes.

Kyari, on Monday, dragged the Federal Government to court, seeking his release from NDLEA custody.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/182/22, the ex-head of the Police Intelligence Response Team prayed court to compel the NDLEA to grant him bail on health grounds, pending the hearing and determination of his fundamental right enforcement application.

Kyari’s lawyer, Ikena, claimed the ‘super cop’ is suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

But Justice Ekwo refused the prayer and said, “Upon studying the process of the Applicant and averments in support thereon, I am of the opinion that the respondent should be put on notice.”

The judge, therefore, ordered that all the relevant processes should be served on FG which was cited as the sole respondent.

Justice Ekwo also adjourned the case till February 24 for hearing.

ABN TV had reported that the anti-narcotics agency on February 14, 2022, indicted Kyari, in alleged drug trafficking and related offences.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, subsequently handed over Kyari to the anti-narcotics agency for prosecution over alleged links in drug trafficking after the NDLEA released damning photo and video evidence to nail Kyari.

The NDLEA said Kyari, the suspended IRT head, belonged to a drug cartel that operates the Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria illicit drug pipeline.

The anti-narcotics agency also said Kyari contacted one of its officers in Abuja and struck a deal to secure the release of a total of 25kg seized cocaine and offered $61,400 bribe to NDLEA officers who played along until his arrest.

The IGP in a statement had corroborated the NDLEA’s findings, saying incontrovertible evidence indicted Kyari in the drug crimes.

The NDLEA had also said it would charge the cop and four others to court.

The police commission had suspended Kyari on July 31, 2021, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States indicted the cop for his alleged role in a $1m scam allegedly perpetrated by alleged international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka, Hushpuppi and five others.

The FBI had said Hushpuppi paid Kyari N8m or $20,600 for the arrest and detention of a “co-conspirator,” Chibuzo Vincent.

The United States Attorney’s Office at the Central District of California had declared Kyari wanted but the Nigerian government has yet to extradite him to face prosecution in the US before the cop’s NDLEA ordeal.

Ebonyi Assembly Removes Deputy Speaker, Declares His Seat Vacant

Rt. Hon. Odefa Obasi Odefa

Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Monday, declared the seat of the embattled Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Odefa Obasi Odefa vacant, following his alleged resignation as a member of the House of Assembly.

Other members who were said to have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressive Congress, APC, during plenary were Mr Oliver Osi, representing Ivo State Constituency, and Mrs Ngozi Ezilo representing Afikpo North East constituency as their letters were read on the floor of the House of Assembly.

According to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, the duo also resigned their membership of the State House of Assembly.

But in their successive reactions, the embattled Deputy Speaker who insisted that he remains the Deputy Speaker of the House described the action of the House as “Monkey Child’s Play.”

“Why will I resign? It’s a monkey child’s place. It is only going to be by Recall. I have not participated in any Congress organized by APC. I didn’t resign.

“I do not belong to the APC. If you represent your people, it’s your people that will decide. No man is God. The House realized that they do not have 2/3 majority to effect my impeachment and that’s why they alleged that I resigned. That’s what happened. Why will I resign? Is it that am mentally deranged?

“Did INEC give any other member a certificate of return? It’s now a legal issue. They plan to kill me. They are planning blood she’d. They cannot kill me because they didn’t create me. I chose to be in PDP

“I have been threatened that I will be kidnapped and not be seen. Everything has to be by the law. Nobody’s life is worth any political position. They lack the power to forge a letter and read it on the floor of the House. I remained the Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi Assembly. I have written to security agencies over the threat I received after the news of my press conference went viral.”

Also, the affected lawmakers, Mr Oliver Osi and Ngozi Ezilo refuted the claim by the House, stressing that they never resigned both from PDP and from the House of Assembly.

Osi said: “Are my daydreaming to resign? It’s not normal. They have denied me my entitlements. My official car and what is meant for my constituents have been denied me. If I am to ever resign from PDP, I have to read the letter by myself and the house will vote in that regard. This is desperation. This is a kind of madness.”

During the plenary, Mr Kingsley Ikoro, representing Afikpo North West constituency was nominated and sworn in as the new Deputy Speaker of the House.

ABN TV gathered that the constitution of the House has only 15 Lawmakers from the All Progressive Congress, APC, while 9 Lawmakers are PDP members.
