The activist disclosed the development in a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday morning.

According to SaharaReporters, Sowore is expected to contest on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC).

Recall that the activist, while accusing President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of arresting and slamming fresh charges against him, stated that he would soon officially declare his presidential ambition.

“They took me to their detention when they were tired; they came and call me that I should be going home.

“So I’m heading home now, no reason to worry, we know why this is happening, they are afraid of the future, they are afraid Sowore will declare very soon and become the president of Nigeria; you can’t stop me”, he said in a post on his social media handle.

Katsina State recorded 2,757,833 births between 2017 and 2021, the National Population Commission has said.

NPC Records 2,757,833 Births In Katsina From 2017 To 2021

Isiaka Yahaya, the acting Director, Public Affairs of NPC, in a statement, explained that the data was recorded from the RapidSMS, a tracking tool that collects and collates real-time information on birth registration in Nigeria.

According to the statement, Katsina recorded 542,368 births in 2017, 489,488 in 2018, 474,068 in 2019, 499,843 in 2020 and 752,066 in 2021.

Yahaya explained that the figures were higher than the ones from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

He explained that the birth registration figures credited to Katsina State by the NBS constitute a gross underestimation of the substantial progress made in the registration of births in Katsina State which currently maintains 201 registration centers across the 34 local government areas of the state, stressing that births and deaths are registered on daily basis and free of charge.

He said that the boost in birth registration, according to the federal commissioner representing Katsina State, Engineer Bala Banye, was following the tremendous support of the Katsina State Government in collaboration with development partners and the traditional institution.

It noted, “Under the Enumeration Area Demarcation for the 2022 Population and Housing Census, the state government supported the commission in the training and recruitment of ad hoc registrars to mop up registration of under-five children in selected local government areas.”

It said in order to boost birth registration in Katsina State, efforts are being made to register and issue birth certificates to vulnerable children in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps across the state.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday depart Abuja for Nairobi, where he is billed to participate in the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations Environmental Programme, scheduled for 3rd – 4th March 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.

President Buhari Leaves Abuja For Nairobi, London For 2-Week Medical Checkup

He will thereafter proceed to London for routine medical checks that will last for a maximum of two weeks.

Buhari’s trip comes after an invitation extended to him by his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, to attend a Special Session themed ‘Strengthening UNEP for the Implementation of the Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.’

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed these in a statement he signed on Tuesday titled ‘President Buhari attends special session on UNEP@50 in Kenya.’

While there, the President is expected to deliver the National Statement of the country and participate in High-Level Dialogue Sessions on the Environment.

According to the organisers of the event, “for 50 years, UNEP has coordinated a worldwide effort with Member States to address the world’s biggest environmental challenges. Member States are vital partners in formulating UNEP’s policy, implementing UNEP’s programme, and championing solutions to our shared environmental challenges.

“UNEP@50 is a time to reflect on the past and envision the future. It provides an opportunity to reinvigorate international cooperation and spur collective action to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. No country or continent can solve these global crises alone. But each nation has a crucial role to play in protecting our people and planet.”

He will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of State for the Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd), Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, and the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Father Commits Suicide After Killing Three Children In US Church Shooting

0

A father shot dead three of his children Monday before turning the gun on himself in a US church, police said.

A fifth person also died in the incident near Sacramento, California, though it was not clear if that person was related to what police said was a “domestic incident.”

All three children who died were under the age of 15, Sergeant Rod Grassman of Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office told reporters.

“At 5:07 this afternoon, we received a call that there was a shooting inside the church,” Grassman said.

“We have found now there’s an adult male, a father who has shot and killed his three children under the under the age of 15.

“And my understanding is that there is a fifth person that is also deceased. I don’t know if they are related.”

Police said they were not looking for anyone else involved in the shooting.

Mass killings involving firearms are a distressingly common occurrence in the United States.

Lax gun laws and an insistence on the right to bear arms have repeatedly stymied attempts to clamp down on the number of weapons in circulation, despite greater controls being favored by the majority of Americans.

Nigerian Will Be Lucky To Have Wike As President, Says Gov. Bala Mohammed

0

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, says the vision of his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, is most needed at the national level, saying Nigeria will be lucky to have him as president.

Mohammed said though he has declared his intention to run for President in 2023, Wike stands tall to rescue Nigeria from the maladministration of the incumbent apex government.

He expressed the need for Nigerians to consider giving Wike the opportunity to serve them at the national level.

Mohammed stated this during the flag-off of construction work at the site of the Rumukwurushi-Elimgbu flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Monday.

This was contained in a statement issued by Wike’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, and made available to newsmen.

He maintained that if Rivers was lucky to have Wike, Nigerians would be luckier to have a man with the vision of knowing how to harness resources in improving the quality of life of the citizenry.

“On behalf of everybody here, I want to say thank you to you (Wike) because I wish you’ll be given the opportunity to bring this type of vision to the national level where you will be able to come and contribute your quota,” Mohammed stated.

“When some second term governors are busy preparing to go home, this man is even breaking new frontiers, doing new projects, and giving timelines and finances that will be able to be delivered during his tenure,” he added.

In his speech, Wike said his administration owes it as a duty to Rivers people to deliver social services and quality projects that will improve their living conditions.

He explained that the Rumukwurushi-Elimgbu Flyover was the 10th flyover and a part of his administration’s promise to the people.

Wike assured it will be delivered in the next 10 months because 80 per cent of the contract sum has already been paid to the contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC.

How 73-Year-Old Man Butchered Brother To Death In Imo Over Land

0

Tragedy struck in Umuomasi Amaraku in Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo State when a 73-year-old man, Ohalete Jogoji, allegedly butchered his immediate younger brother, Augustine Jogoji.

Our correspondent gathered that while the younger one was deep asleep, Ohalete went into his room and hacked him to death.

Enraged youth of the community thereafter arrested him, stripped him naked and almost lynched him before he was rescued.

He was subsequently taken to the police command headquarters in Owerri.

The suspect told newsmen that he killed his younger brother while he was asleep because he took the only plot of land belonging to the family.

He said: “I was angry that he took the only land belonging to our family.

“Instead of me to be in possession of the only portion of land as the first son, he possessed it. I got angry and attacked him.”

The suspect’s daughter, Nkiru, also told newsmen though her father and his slain younger brother were used to having minor issues, she was surprised that the issue went out of control to the extent of her father allegedly killing her uncle.

The police spokesperson for the command, CSP Mike Abattam, is yet to respond to an inquiry on the matter.

Nnamdi Kanu Protests In DSS Cell As Lawyer Says He’s Very Much Alive

0

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has expressed his anger over the refusal of operatives of Department of State Services, DSS to allow him see his legal team at three different occasions.

DSS Bans Visits To Nnamdi Kanu By His Lawyers

While revealing that Nnamdi Kanu is very much alive at his detention facility, his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor on Monday disclosed that the IPOB leader declined to step out of his detention cell in protest over the action of the DSS.

This was contained in a statement published on Barr. Ejiofor’s official Facebook page where he gave an update on Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team’s routine visit at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.

He said efforts were being “intensified to pacify” Kanu to have a one-on-one discussion with his legal team led by human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN.

The statement, read: “Our routine court-ordered visit to our indefatigable Client was led by the distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, who is also the Lead Counsel in Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case.

“Our esteemed team of Lawyers comprising of the Learned Silk, myself and Bar. Aloy Ejimakor, were all cleared most promptly upon our arrival, and consequently allowed to proceed with the business of the day- to pay Nnamdi Kanu a visit as his lawyers.

“We were immediately ushered into the room designated for the visit. All the protocols were duly observed, as we willingly submitted ourselves to same, in line with the DSS stipulated routine guidelines.

“We waited until minutes turned into an hour, and there was no signal that we would have Onyendu brought to us.

“Consequently, the erudite Silk leading our team raised alarm and demanded to have the attention of the DSS superiors for explanation on why a court-ordered visit which, ordinarily, should not extend beyond two hours was taking almost one and half hour waiting time, with no hope of meeting with Onyendu.

“Following the stout protest by the erudite Silk, we were consequently brought in, to meet with some superior officers at a meeting where all superior personnel connected with the matter were invited.

“Far-reaching contacts were made to establish the fact that our Client- Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was presumably protesting the previous three visits which were aborted by the DSS.

“All efforts made to move the visit to his very location of detention were not granted by the DSS, as they insisted that our request ran contrary to their procedure and guidelines.

“Effort is presently being intensified to pacify Onyendu to have one-on-one discussion with his legal team, to enable us brief him on legal steps we may be compelled to take and measures to be adopted to assure him that there are legal consequences for flagrant violations of court orders by the DSS.

“We are quite hopeful that this needless impasse will be resolved between now and tomorrow morning,to enable the legal team led by Chief Ozekhome, SAN, to conduct the visit tomorrow. That has so far been assured us.

“We can authoritatively confirm to you all at this stage that ONYENDU MAZI NNAMDI KANU is very much alive, and still being detained in the facility of the State Security Services (DSS) National Headquarters, Abuja.

“We shall continue to keep you updated on matters connected with this visit to our indefatigable Client- Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and any other compelling attendant concerns thereto.

“Thank you all, UMUCHINEKE and remain richly blessed”.

The IPOB leader is answering to a 15-count treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him.

The charge against him borders on his alleged commission of act of terrorism, felony, incitement, unlawful importation of a radio transmitter, and headship of an illegal organization.

Trial Justice Binta Nyako had ordered the DSS to allow Kanu to have access to three visitors, two days in the week.

DSS Lambasts PDP Chairman Over Utterances

0

For claiming that his party would not use the Department of State Services operatives to harass people upon taking over power in 2023, the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, has been cautioned to stop maligning the frontline security agency.

DSS Lambasts PDP Chairman Over Utterances

Dr. Ayu, who is upbeat his party will upset the ruling APC in next year’s poll, reportedly declared at a political function in Owerri that his party being the custodian of democratic values, would respect people’s right at all times and would not use security agents to harass and intimidate innocent citizens when it takes over from APC next year.

But Ayu’s unprovoked claim has angered the authorities of the DSS, which describe the declaration as an attempt to malign the service that provided security for him when he was Senate president and minister for education, industries, internal affairs and environmental at different times.

The DSS, which responded to Ayu through its Spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said the PDP national chairman had shot himself in the foot by ascribing a wrong notion to the service, which sheperded him for many years as a top-ranking officer of government without infringing on anybody’s right.

The statement made available to ABN TV on Monday night, said: “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to an unwarranted statement made by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Iyorchia Ayu against security agencies including the Service.

The Party Chairman, while speaking at an event on 23rd February, 2022 in Owerri, Imo State, was quoted to have said that his party would not use the SSS to harass the people when they take over Aso Rock in 2023. Though the Service restrains itself from joining issues particularly with politicians, it wishes to state its disapproval of such statement, which is considered unjustified, unfair, speculative and preposterous.

“Except to malign and incite the people against it, the Service questions the rationale behind such an unprovoked description of it by Chief Ayu who had variously benefitted from it and indeed the State. Having served variously as Senate President, Minister of Education, Industry, Internal Affairs and Environment, with full complements of Security details, he knows the Service is never used to harass the people.

“And if he ever used the details for negative purposes (unknown to the Service), he should know that the times have changed. Dr Ayu knows that the Service is a frontline guardian of democracy and respects the rule of law in Nigeria. It is committed to the protection of the people.

“While members of the public are urged to disregard Dr Ayu’s statement, politicians are enjoined to desist from making unguarded utterances with tendencies to breach public order.

“Overall, the Service prefers that it is left out of any political fray as it is committed to maintaining usual neutrality and transparency in the discharge of its mandate,” Dr. Afunanya, said.

For the avoidance of doubt, it does not shield its personnel who offend its rules and in fact, laws of the land, from disciplinary action, thus the untruthfulness of his statement. The DSS has undoubtedly made profound sacrifices for the existence and unity of the country and will continue to, despite deliberate attacks on it.

A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, February 28, 2022, subpoenaed an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Deputy Superintendent of the Correction (DSC) J.O. Oyaleke over his failure to produce in court, one Otuyalo Oluwadamilola, a defendant who is being prosecuted by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and remanded by the court for his involvement in cybercrimes to the tune of £45,000 (Forty-Five Thousand Pounds Sterling).

Oyaleke, was served with the “summon” on February 25, 2022 to come and testify about the whereabouts of the defendant. The officer who is attached to Justice Uche Agomoh’s court and charged with the responsibility of producing any defendant remanded by same court failed to produce the defendant on the 2nd of December, 2021 which had been slated for commencement of trial.

When asked by the court about the whereabouts of the defendant, Oyaleke told the court that the defendant was amongst the 401 inmates who fled Abolongo Correctional facility on October 22, 2021 during an attack by some bandits.

He further told the court that the Oyo State office of the Nigerian Correctional Service is working with relevant agencies to ensure the re-arrest of the fleeing defendant.

The defendant was arraigned sometime last year on five-count charge for internet fraud and he pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against him by the EFCC.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Otuyalo Oluwadamilola, between August, 2017 to September, 2017 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court took possession of the aggregate sum of N16, 638, 000.00 (Sixteen Million, Six Hundred and Thirty-eight Thousand Naira Only) paid into your account with Zenith Bank Plc-1005137906 under the disguise that the said sum was for a business transaction when you reasonably ought to have known that the said fund formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity, to wit: Internet Fraud, and hereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.”

Justice Agomoh however, adjourned the matter till June 29, 2022, for mention.
