Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has appealed to non-participants of its examinations to keep off the registration process.

Keep Off Registration Process If You Are Not A Participant, JAMB Registrar Warns
JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede

Oloyede made the appeal after monitoring registration process of the board’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE), on Thursday in Abuja.

He observed that most of the challenges faced by candidates at the point of the registration was self-inflicted because candidates relied on unauthourised people for help instead of following the board’s guidelines.

He said that while some of them allow their parents to create or generate their profiles for them, others fall into the hands of fraudsters at the registration centers.

The registrar said that allowing anyone accesses to one’s code or other related information in the name of help, would only jeopardise the process for the candidate.

“From our monitoring today, you can see that 99 per cent of problems encountered by candidates are self-inflicted.

“This is because some of them play into the hands of fraudsters while seeking for help and they end up doing the wrong thing, putting commas and full stops when sending their NIN for the profile codes.

“We collect just N3, 500 in Nigeria here for registration while other institutions in the UK collect N70, 000 to N80, 000 for the same process and yet, people do not comply to simple instructions.

“You saw a candidate, whose father went to generate Remitta and paid N4, 7000 registration fees into JAMB/ CBN account instead of going to an accredited vendor to pay.

“Now, the candidate cannot generate a profile code because he paid into a wrong account, except he goes to any of our vendors and pays another fee, he cannot get the code.

“We need you to help us appeal to non-candidates to keep off this exercise. Parents should allow their children to read the instructions and follow them accordingly,” he said.

Oloyede also noted that, unlike in the previous exercise where candidates’ details were taken directly into the system at the registration point, candidates now must fill in their information in forms given to them at the center.

This, he said, was so that they give their accurate data in their own handwriting, so they do not return to spend money to change “typographical errors” they claimed was made by the officers at the point of registration.

The forms, he added, were also uploaded on the system while the candidates watch the officers type the details into the system.

The registrar also added that the board had so far registered over 500, 000 candidates and was expecting to register about 1.5 million at the end of the exercise.

He said: “We registered 70, 000 three days ago, we hope to register another 70, 000 today.

“We still have more than 12 days to go and if things continue to move smoothly, we hope to register, at least, 50, 000 per day.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the 2022 registration began on Feb.19 and is expected to end on March 26, while the UTME has been scheduled by JAMB to hold from May 6 to May 16

A front runner in the race to succeed Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu as Abia governor in 2023, Sir Chikwe Udensi has said he is sufficiently qualified and has a proven track record of excellent performance in service, saying the success he recorded as General Secretary of National Union of Local Government Employeed, NULGE is there for all to see and can be replicated in Abia if he is elected governor.

Sir Chikwe Udensi

While stating that he effectively ran and managed the affairs of the union which has all the 774 local governments in Nigeria as members, the APGA chieftain noted that managing the affairs of Abia with only 17 local governments will not be a difficult task for him.

Speaking on a radio programme, Open Parliament on Love FM Umuahia, streamed live on ABN radio and TV on Wednesday, the Interpol Systems Consultant expressed dissatisfaction that people who do not have a proven record of performance end up as leaders, a situation he said has affected good governance.

Sir Udensi was reacting to the long period of campaign, not less than 150 days before election available to political parties in the newly signed Amended Electoral Act.

He said the elongated campaign period will offer political parties and their candidates opportunity to go to hinterlands to tell the people their manifesto and what they have done in the past to make them best for the office they are vying for.

It is an opportunity to keep away this fire brigade attitude. If anyone is coming to seek for public office, let him or her go to the people and tell them this is what I did yesterday and this is what I intend to do tomorrow.

The problem we have today is that some of those who go in there are learning. They are hungry and don’t have home in their places. The moment funds are at their disposal, they start building their own homes and neglect the people.

“Most of them do not even have a business. You cannot give somebody who does not have capacity to generate one million Naira your business to manage.

That is the problem we have. Let them go to the public, tell what they can do so that the people can make a proper judgement.

“We are gradually getting there, as obtained in other parts of the world where only those who have capacity to deliver are given the job,” he said.

APC Stalwart, Anthony Iroegbu Says Presidential Ticket For South East Will Douse IPOB Agitation

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo state, Anthony Iroegbu, on Thursday called on the National leadership of the APC, to further narrow down the APC, presidential ticket, to the South-East region in order to douse the tension of agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Iroegbu made this known to newsmen in Owerri while commending the APC, for zoning its presidential ticket to the Southern part of the country.

The APC chieftain said zoning it to the South East, would achieve equity and justice in the country.

According to Iroegbu, “Let me start with commending the APC led Federal Government for zoning its 2023 presidency to the Southern part of Nigeria. The move is a welcome development.

“At the same time, we appealed with the party to zero their presidency to the South East, doing so would to a reasonable extent douse the tension as well as ongoing agitation for a sovereign state by the members of the IPOB.

“We were elated when I heard that APC has zoned 2023 presidency to South, this implies that the party has the interest of the country at heart, particularly the issue of equity and justice. And importantly, the new Electoral Act signed into law by the President, will also go a long way in bringing sanity into Nigeria’s future elections.”

Adding that, “The new Electoral laws, done under the APC led Government has also shown that it has the interest of the nation at heart, this will go a long way in shaping and sanitising future elections and changed the perception of the people particularly the Southerners over the party.”

PTAD Discovers 15,357 Ghost Pensioners

Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) said in Lagos on Thursday that 15,357 ghost pensioners within Federal Government’s parastatal agencies were collecting pensions illegally.

PTAD Discovers 15,357 Ghost Pensioners

Kabiru Yusuf, Director, Parastatals Pension Department, PTAD made the disclosure when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on the side-line of a one-day training for newsmen covering pensions.

PTAD was established by the Federal Government in August 2013 in compliance with the provisions of the repealed Pension Reform Act (PRA) of 2004.

Its establishment was necessitated by the need to reform the old Pensions Offices under the Defined Benefit Scheme which was bedeviled by myriad problems.

Yusuf said while reviewing the number of pensioners on its payroll in the last quarter of 2020, it discovered that there were 120,000 of them prior to the call for verification.

He explained that following verification, the directorate discovered that 20,191 of these pensioners could not be found on the PTAD verification database but was on the payroll.

“After a lot of due diligence, we decided to remove them from the payroll in the belief that if they were genuine pensioners, they would come out to present themselves.

“We established a robust complaint management system and notified the Pensions Commission, our regulator, the National Assembly, and agencies where the pensioners claimed to have worked,’’ he said.

He said only 4,834 of the affected pensioners went through the process of the complaint management to present themselves for verification and they were restored on the payroll.

Yusuf said some other cases caused by errors were corrected and the affected persons were also restored to the payroll.

“Up till now, we have close to 16,000 pensioners unaccounted for and unless anyone comes out with valid identification, they are people who have been collecting pensions illegally,’’ he said.

The director said he could not readily name the amount of money the directorate was able to save from ending the illegality, but that in 2016, during the directorate’s initiative to validate BVN of pensioners, it saved up to N7 billion.

Yusuf noted that the initiative was geared towards bringing integrity and validity to the database in place.

He said that verification was the only recognized basis for PTAD to ascertain that the pensioners it was responsible for were not only qualified but were alive.

The director said the verification would enable the pensioners to link their details to their bank accounts biometrics and thereafter compute their entitlements and pay them their monthly pensions, different from the inherited pension which had lots of errors in it.

He expressed disappointment that PTAD only got an Excel list of pensioners’ names, amounts, bank names, and account numbers when it took off in 2014.

“We started making payment on what was called ‘good faith ‘ at that time until when we were able to do verification,’’ he noted.

He told NAN also that PTAD had opened state offices and several social digital platforms manned by competent officers to bring its services closer to pensioners.

Earlier, Dr. Chioma Ejike, Executive Secretary, PTAD, said the directorate had worked assiduously over the years to change the narrative of pension administration in Nigeria.

The duo of Umeibe and Ezenwanne were accused of conspiring with others at large, to import 21.35kg of Cocaine into the country.

The NDLEA entered the charge against them, barely 24 hours after the Attorneys-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, okayed request for Kyari who hitherto headed the Police IRT, to be extradited to the United States of America, USA, to face trial over his alleged involvement with an internet fraudster, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, popularly known as Hussipuppi.

Former Emir of Kano, Mohammadu Sanusi has stated why he was fired as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Emir of Kano.

Sanusi Reveals Why He Was Sacked As CBN Governor, Emir Of Kano

Sanusi claimed that his willingness to speak the truth to those in positions of authority cost him his job.

This was revealed by the former CBN governor during the concluding ceremony of the AIG Public Leadership Programme Class of 2021 in Abuja.

Sanusi claims that he has “always stood to tell the truth to authority,” which is why he was deposed as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Emir of Kano, but that hasn’t stopped him from doing what he believes is right.

He bemoaned the fact that civil servants have sold their souls for personal benefit.

Sanusi emphasized that civil officials no longer do their responsibilities honorably, saying: “with time, civil servants have lost their credibility.”

“Over 80% of them have lost their morals for selfish gain,” Sanusi remarked, emphasizing that civil servants no longer do their tasks honorably.

Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman and Co-Founder of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, also spoke, stating that the foundation spent £563,000 training 49 top civil employees for the Public Leaders’ Programme Class of 2021.

He said that the foundation gathered senior executives from across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies as beneficiaries after partnering with the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government (MDAs).

The lawmaker said he is currently consulting with his lawyers following what he called unsubstantiated accusations against his person being peddled by these individuals and their co-travellers.

He was reacting to the March 1 fire incident at the home of father to Hon. Nnenna Ukeje, former House of Representatives member in Alayi Bende.

Gunmen numbering about 5 were said to have invaded the house at about 2am Tuesday, razed down a part of it and burnt two vehicles in the compound to ashes, according to Mr Okoro.

Hon. Kalu in a statement on Wednesday signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Onyinyechi Ojiaku denied any knowledge of the incident, maintaining that politics of violence has never been his system.

While condemning the incident, the Spokesperson of House of Representatives underlined that there is a plan to drag his name to repute with false information to the public regarding the fire outbreak.

He said, “Given the grave unsubstantiated accusations made by Mr. Promise Uzoma Okoro, Vincent Ihendu , Obike Kanu and co-travellers, we are currently consulting with our legal team who have reached out to the security agencies for a thorough investigation and possible legal actions if the need arises.

“The right steps must be taken to discourage, especially in the minds of youths this despicable style of politics as this is the umpteenth time that attempts have been made to bring his image to disrepute through varieties of falsehood, misinformation and unverified information mainly on the social media space by these unrepentant blackmailers.

“Security investigations will reveal our next line of action, as Rep. Kalu has promised to bring all perpetrators of this evil act to book to face the legal consequences of their actions.”

He insisted that he does not apply desperation in seeking political power, attributing it to why he did not challenge the victory of Hon. Ukeje as House of Representatives member for Bende federal constituency in the past.

The release added, “Rep. Benjamin Kalu has championed politics of development and an ambition anchored on service to humanity and God , this is why the development of Bende Federal Constituency will continue to be his priority over personal interest despite the numerous unwarranted distractions from all quarters of the opposition.”

He therefore called on his constituents and supporters across the state and the globe to disregard what he called criminal defamatory information and remain calm as investigations continue.

He reiterated his resolve to remain resolute in delivering the mandate of the people, noting that he will not be distracted by the antics of detractors.

Mohammed Dikko Umar

Justice Nmamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on March 2, 2022, reserved judgment in the case of alleged criminal diversion of N66million against a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar (rtd) till March 17, 2022.

Umar was first arraigned on January 25, 2017, on a 7-count charge of money laundering and procurement fraud to the tune of N9.7 billion.

However, six of the counts were dismissed following a no-case submission, leaving one count of alleged diversion of N66million from the Nigeria Air Force’s bank account.

At the resumed trial on March 2, 2022, counsel presented their final arguments with defence counsel, Onyeachi Okpeazu SAN, asking the court to discharge and acquit the defendant on the grounds that the prosecution failed to establish the ingredients of the alleged offence beyond any reasonable doubt.

My lord, the count was not established in any manner by evidence. This is a criminal matter, the prosecution must prove beyond reasonable doubt,” he said.

However, prosecuting counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, urged the court to be guided by the written address filed and adopted on February 22, 2022, to convict and sentence the defendant.

My lord, a lot of stories has been raised, first whether we have proven money that left Nigerian Air force Account to Capital Law Firm. We did, at paragraph 5.5 in our written address, N47 million and N10 million respectively left the NAF account to the Capital Law Firm, and all are before the court,” he said.

Justice Dimgba consequently fixed March 17 to deliver judgment.
