A leading governorship aspirant in Abia under the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Sir Chikwe Udensi has said nothing will stop the party from occupying office of the governor come 2023, noting that the party is more than ready and prepared to wrestle power from the ruling PDP.

The Interpol Systems Consultant while emphasising that APGA will take over governance effectively next year also said the manipulations that allegedly characterised previous governorship elections in the state will not be allowed to take place again.

At a meeting with ward and local government chairmen of the party in Umuahia on Wednesday, the governorship hopeful urged them to ensure that a competent and capable hand emerges as its candidate, noting that this is the only way the party can emerge victorious.

He therefore called on the party leaders to effectively mobilise their wards to participate in the ongoing voters registration exercise, assuring that APGA will soon begin a process that will ensure that residents of Aba transfer their voting points to where they live, adding that some of them registered in the market and their places of work which will be under lock on election day.

They say Aba doesn’t vote but there are some factors responsible for this. One of them is voter apathy, anger. Again, some of them registered in places where they cannot vote on election day.

“We are committed to checking those demographies. I am not implying that I am already the APGA governorship candidate but I am only saying that we must put our house in order. Let us put efforts to ensure that people are registered properly and that they register in the right location where they can vote,” he advised.

He reiterated the readiness of APGA to welcome new entrants into the party to boost its strength.

Sir Udensi further assured that he will offer his support to anyone who picks the party’s governorship ticket if he does not emerge victorious.

He solicited for the support of the local government and ward leaders in solidifying the support base of the party.

Top Russian General Killed By Ukrainian Sniper

A top Russian general has been killed amid bitter fighting in Ukraine in what represents a major blow to the Russian invasion.

Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, who was the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia’s Central Military District, died yesterday as Ukrainian defence forces repelled the Russian offensive.

His death has not yet been officially confirmed by Russia’s Ministry of Defence, but was announced on social media by his colleague Sergey Chipilyov and was widely reported by several Russian and Ukrainian news outlets.

A military source confirmed that he was killed ‘by a sniper’, and suggested a funeral for the Major General – by far the most senior Russian figure to have died in the conflict thus far – will be held in Russia on Saturday.

After days of denial, the Kremlin yesterday admitted that 498 of its troops have been killed and 1,600 injured in the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine, but the true figure is almost certainly higher.

Ukraine’s armed forces meanwhile claimed today that Russia’s army had suffered 9,000 casualties – though the statement recognised that the calculation of the death toll ‘is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities’.

Chipilyov, of the Airborne Forces Union of Russian Paratroopers, confirmed Sukhovetsky’s death on social media earlier today in perhaps the most definitive proof of the general’s passing.

‘With great pain, we received the tragic news about the death of our friend, Major-General Andrey Aleksandrovich Sukhovetsky, in Ukraine during a special operation.

‘We express our deepest condolences to his family,’ the post read.

It was not clear where Sukhovetsky was killed.

The 47-year-old was a highly decorated veteran who was appointed deputy army commander of the 41st division in October 2021.

Palpable tension has gripped some communities in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State after over 100 cattle were killed and many injured by gunmen on Wednesday evening.

The state chairman of the Gan Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (GAFDAN), Abdullahi Shehu, told Daily Trust that the incident occurred in the evening when the cattle were grazing.

Malam Nura Abdullahi, the state chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), also confirmed the incident, saying aside from those killed, hundreds of other cattle, rams and sheep were still missing.

Shehu said: “The cattle were just grazing when the gunmen stormed the general area of Maiyanga and started shooting sporadically. So far, more than 100 cattle were killed while many are still missing.

“We have informed the police and Operation Safe Haven command. The Sector 3 command had responded to the incidents and had arrested about seven persons in connection to the killing.

“We are tired of these atrocities. What have we done to deserve this? We have not destroyed any farm. We are calling on the security to do the needful and get to the bottom of this dastardly act.”

Both spokesmen of the State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven, ASP Ubah Gabriel and Major Ishaku Takwa respectively did not respond to text messages requesting comments on the incident.

For the past one month, Bassa general area had not recorded any attack of killing until this Wednesday when gunmen attacked the herders and their cattle.

NBA Has Failed To Protect Rule Of Law - Governor Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has stated that the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government has kept making promises while the people only get failures, reiterating that it was time to vote out APC.

Wike also said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has the capacity to reverse the suffering caused by Nigerians by the rudderless administration of the APC-led Federal Government.

He made the assertion at the inauguration of Ahoada-Ekpena Road project in Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state, yesterday, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri.

The governor pointed out that it was maladministration that has cost the APC gross failure, which has increased the suffering of Nigerians because they have no ideas and lack leadership audacity.

Wike opined that PDP remained the only hope of Nigerians because it has the magic wand to change the current sufferings in the land.

He said: “You have seen the failure of the APC Federal Government. They make promises upon promises, but what we are getting is failure upon failure. So, all of us must brace up to say this suffering that God has helped us to survive, we cannot allow it to continue.

“The mere fact that God has made us to survive does not mean that you’ll continue to suffer that way. PDP has the magic wand to change the failure of this APC-led government at the federal level.”

However, inaugurating the 2.4km Ahoada-Ekpena Road project, former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, acknowledged that the development pattern adopted by Governor Wike was balanced.

Makarfi, who noted that development projects are spread across Rivers State with the rural communities benefitting as much as the cities, said it is what Nigeria needs to experience to move it forward.

IGP Usman Baba Sets Rules For Mounting Road Blocks

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Baba has ordered Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the states to take permission from the Force Headquarters (FHQ) before any officer can mount roadblocks.

Baba said he would hold the CPs liable for any violation of the policy.

The IGP read the riot act yesterday at a meeting with Assistant Inspector General (AIGs) and CPs at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He said: “I have continually been inundated by complaints of excesses in the conduct of our men on patrol or stop-and-search duties and I have personally had the cause to drive round in the course of which, I witnessed some of these illegalities, particularly in relation to roadblocks.

“I want to re-emphasise that while stop-and-search strategy could occasionally be an invaluable anti-crime tactic, such should not be done without requisite approval and must not be a permanent strategy. It must equally be conducted with extant police protocols which emphasise civility to members of the public and must be laced with the highest level of professional decorum. Such must not also be turned into an avenue for extortion.

“Consequently, as strategic leaders, you could be held liable for any violation of this Force policy. You are, therefore, strongly advised to go back to your commands, review this development and ensure that your operations conform strictly to the vision of my leadership.

“As mentioned during the recently concluded retreat and conference, it is anticipated that the Force would be further challenged by the enhanced political activities that are associated with the upcoming 2023 general election.

“The import of this is that beyond our routine anti-crime activities, we have to be prepared not just to deal with politically-related infractions that could ensue, but also with preparations ahead to guarantee the security and credibility of the elections.”

Baba advised officers to get prepared for the 2023 general election, saying the police authority would liaise with the leadership of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), civil society organisations (CSOs), and the Nigeria Police Legal Chambers to dissect the provisions of the recently amended Electoral Act.

The IGP also said between January 2022 and now, collated crimes statistics revealed that 36 terror elements, 78 murder suspects, 110 armed robbery suspects, 50 suspected kidnappers, and 150 suspected cultists were arrested during various police operations across the country.

“Aside from these, 204 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued, while 155 firearms of various descriptions and 1,561 live ammunition were also recovered,” he added.

Baba decorated a police officer, Mary Aina (aka Iron Abbey), who won the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) International Super Bantamweight title belt at the East Sussex, Landon, with her new rank – from Police Constable to Corporal.
