Sen. Abe Inspires Young People, Reveals How He Once Slept Under Bridge

A former senator, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the seventh National Assembly, Magnus Abe, has revealed how he slept under the bridge while he was stranded during his youthful days in Port Harcourt.

Abe, who stated this during an interactive session with youths and young professionals in Port Harcourt, also narrated how he overcame challenges earlier in life.

Abe explained that he preferred to sleep under a bridge and work hard in achieving excellence than rely on friends and acquaintances for help.

The former senator who narrated his past experiences to inspire the youths said if saddled with the responsibility to pilot the affairs of Rivers State, he would create an environment that would engender growth and prosperity across the board.

While urging the youths to change their approach and imbibe the culture of hard work and determination, he stated that nothing would be difficult for them to achieve if they prioritised those qualities.

He said, “I am going through my own story, if I go further back into my story, you will find yourself somewhere in my story. I have had issues, I have had challenges. There were times when I had no place to sleep in this town. No matter how late I stayed in Port Harcourt, I had to go back to my village, because I had nowhere to sleep.

“Several times, 2 am in the night sometimes, I would be stranded here and I will sleep under the bridge in this town because I didn’t want to go and start waking up my friends to beg them for where to sleep in their houses.”

“I went through that but there were opportunities,” Abe stated, noting that after becoming a lawyer, he refused to run to anyone for financial assistance to acquire his professional dressing,” he stated

Abe said he preferred to borrow wig and gowns from his friends in the legal profession, especially, when they were not going to court until he was able to acquire one for himself.

Two Missing Children Found Inside Abandoned Bus

The two four-year-old boys, Wasiu Dauda and Al-Ameen Ibrahim, abducted in the Ijesha area of Lagos have been found.

According to a Daily Trust report, the boys were found alive in an abandoned mini bus along Oshodi-Apapa Expressay this morning.

Dauda’s mother, Awau, told our correspondent that the children are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

“We have found them. They were found in an abandoned mini bus this morning on the expressway. They are in the hospital now,” the elated mother said.

The little boys were discovered missing around 4pm on Friday, two hours after they returned from school.

A man was said to have lured them into a tricycle with biscuits while they were playing around the vicinity and whisked them away.

I Never Ran After Power But Power Chased Me, Says Obasanjo

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that “he did not run after power, but power ran after him.”

Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta, while responding to some issues raised during a symposium, organised by the national leadership of the Keggites Club of Nigeria through the Unity in Diversity Forum.

The lecture, which was held at the auditorium of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Complex, was part of activities to celebrate the 85th Birthday of the former president, who is the Eternal Grand Patron of the Kegite Club.

At the symposium, Dr. Yemi Faroumbi, Dr. Festus Adedayo and Prof. Kolawole Kazeem spoke on the theme: “Depreciating Cultural Values and Virtue in the Era of Social Media: Causes, Challenges and Solutions”.

The statement of the former president, was in response to a former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Yemi Farounbi, who eulogised Obasanjo as someone, who at no time ran after power.

Farounbi in the lecture, said that Obasanjo rejected the call for him to become the Head of State in 1976, after the coup that claimed the lives of the General Murtala Muhammed and some other military officers.

He said, ” he (Obasanjo) became the Military Head of State, very much against his wish. I have the narrations of the events of the February 13, 1976 by highly respected General T.Y Danjuma and others to buttress this”.

“I also know that he did everything possible to reject becoming the candidate of PDP and ultimately the president in 1999 elections”.

“I can say authoritatively because because I was involved. He had no interest in pursuing power, but power was interested in pursuing him because of the much needed cultural values inherent in him”.

“He was like David in the Bible, who did not want to be a king, but he had the values of a king. He has demonstrated bravery by killing a bear and lion with bear hands”.

“God needed such a person to face Goliath. During the Civil War, when the march by First Division of Nigerian Army has been stalemated, and the 2nd Division has faded away under the burden of the failure of the ill-advised and ill-fatted attempt to attack Onitsha from Asaba, across the Niger River and the 3rd Marine Commando was losing streak, General Obasanjo came as the David who destroyed our Goliath and did that vet successfully”.

“When1999 came and the PDP wanted a candidate that will become a President that will make it difficult for the military to come back, General Obasanjo fitted the bill because of his character traits of bravery, courage and ability to manage men and resources. Not only that PDP was looking for someone who will lead Nigeria as a Nigerian and truly belong to all. Again General Obasanjo fitted the bill. He did not become President because of a lifelong ambition, but because he demonstrated rich cultural core values in assignments that he was given.”

Responding to the lecture, Obasanjo, who was elated by the submissions of the lecturers confirmed the position of Farounbi.

He said, “at one time you (referring to Farounbi), mentioned I was reluctant to be in political power as you said. I was trained as a soldier. One of my trainings is that soldiering and politics don’t go together and I stuck to that”.

” But as you rightly said, while I stuck to separation between soldiering and politics, power started chasing me and I ran, and I ran and I ran and until I could not run out of the reach of power”.

“I believed that without been immodest, the fact that I was not looking for power, power was looking for me make a drought of business.”

Speaking on the topic of the lecture, Obasanjo said that his allegiance is for Africa and Nigeria, as he would not be part of anything outside them.

He affirmed that the sterling values and virtue in the continent and the country, made him a Pan-Africanist and Nigeria to the core.

The former president tasked the club to unite and become one, saying their unity was part of what would be needed to make him truly an eternal grandpatron of the club.

“I will only be your Kegite eternal grandpatron if you all bury your hatchets. So, the honour you all that are here will do me is to come together now, so that by next year of my birthday, we will all be together again, and that will gladden my hearts.

Hushpuppi: I Didn’t Exonerate Abba Kyari, I Only Demand Further Probe – AGF Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Sunday, faulted reports that he had conclusively exonerated the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari who is facing trial before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of the illegal drug business.

Malami said this in a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media and Public Relations), Dr. Umar Gwandu in Abuja.

According to him, there appeared to be a “misunderstanding regarding the issue.”

He said, “It was a case of work in progress in respect of which the office of the Attorney General of the Federation requested for further probe in relation to some aspects of investigation.

“It was clear that the conclusion on the alleged contradiction on the issue was a clear case of misconception.

“The office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice’s stance is that no conclusion has been reached in the direction of absence of evidence relating to the first report.

“The issues were raised for further investigation with a view to cover the field in investigation in order to arrive at an informed decision.”

Speaking with our correspondent, the MD/CEO Tuwantu Music International, Mr. Chukwuemeka Okorie, popularly known as “Emeka Tuwantu” said the indigenous record label company originated from Eastern Nigeria in 2016.

He said though the label had effectively managed its operation in Nigeria and London offices, the temporary break was necessary to enable it go back to the drawing board, effect some changes and tighten up its strategy.

According to Emeka Tuwantu, the strategic comeback which the label had concluded will enable it compete favourably in addition to the new team it’s relaunching into the music industry with.

He noted that the label is strategically repositioned to compete with the likes of Mavin Records, Universal, Sony Music and Empire Africa who are some of the biggest market shareholders in Afrobeats today.

He pledged to raise to stardom untapped potentials in the industry, which he believes will end the long period of neglect that the eastern part of the country has suffered simply because they are not regarded as a commercial hub to market/export music like the sister territory, Lagos.

Female Inmate, Okike Chinyere Emerges Best Graduating Student

A female inmate of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Lagos State Command, Okike Chinyere, has emerged as the best graduating student of the Peace and Conflict Resolution department, National Open University (NOUN).

She bagged a second-class upper degree in the course, according to a statement by the correctional service.

Aside from her, a male inmate, Alegbe Afolabi, was awarded an MSc in Peace and Conflict Resolution.

In his vote of thanks, one of the graduating inmates, Nweke Chibueze, thanked the Controller General, Haliru Nababa, and the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN for the opportunity. He, however, pleaded for clemency for the graduating students so they can be freed to give their quota to the country’s development.

While speaking during the presentation of the Bachelor of Science certificate to eight graduands from the Lagos Command, the state Controller of Correctional Service, Adewale Francis Adebisi, urged them to imbibe the virtues of education.

According to him, incarceration should not stop them from dreaming, telling them to use the “opportunity available while in detention to better their lives so that when they are released, they can contribute positively to the society”.

As the scheming for who becomes Nigeria’s President next year intensifies with different permutations by the two major parties, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has engaged the services of two prominent Nigerian influencers to lobby the United States (US) to support it to upstage the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Presidential Villa in the next elections.

The two influencers engaged by the PDP to seek the support, understanding and goodwill of the U.S government towards the party’s success in the 2023 elections, are from the northern and South-East with substantial influence in Nigeria and abroad.

The former Aviation Minister, who has remained a strong advocate for the PDP in both electoral and economic issues, has lived and worked in the US before returning to the country to take up appointment with a major federal agency before venturing into full time politics.

The northern Catholic priest on the other hand, it was learnt from reliable party sources, was chosen to join forces with the ex-Aviation minister to make the U.S trip and lobby in support of the PDP because of his influence in Nigeria and overseas as well as his fearlessness in tackling the current administration under President Muhammadu Buhari.

A top party official, who is familiar with the trip, confirmed to Sunday Vanguard that the former Minister would travel out of Nigeria early next week to join forces with a group of Nigerian activists and lobbyists already living and working in the country to drum up support from the influential Washington Lobby Group.

According to the plan for the lobbying assignment, the former Minister, who was part of the team that successfully lobbied for the visit of former Nigeria’s Vice President to the U.S, would later be joined in the U.S by the outspoken Catholic priest to continue their pressure on the Black Caucus to secure political support for the PDP to sail through in the 2023 elections.

“The lobbyists will use the facade of an innocuous conference to garner support for their mission in the U.S but all those whose influence they consider as critical for their interest have already been contacted and their active support sought by the organisers,” a top party official said.

“The U.S lobby arm is being coordinated by a prominent Nigerian activist from one of the South-East states, who has been mobilising support for various political and economic causes in the U.S in the past”.

The party official, who is familiar with the trip, pointed out that the main thrust of the visiting Nigerian lobbyists to the U.S is to sell the opposition PDP to the international community as the only party in the country that can take the nation out of the current challenges.

Additionally, the team is to plead with the international community to give the PDP another opportunity to prove to Nigerians that the party has what it takes to redeem them from the economic and socio-political crisis currently bedevilling the nation under the current administration.

This is not the first time a Nigerian opposition party is engaging in lobbying US administration for support in election.

Bauchi Sets Aside N100m For Recitation Of Qur’an

The Bauchi State Government has approved N100million to fast track the hosting of the 36th edition of the 2022 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in the state.

Governor Bala Mohammed stated this at the inauguration of a 57-member Local Organising Committee for the competition yesterday in Bauchi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the national competition is scheduled to take place in Bauchi from March 18 to March 20.

Mohammed said this was the third time Bauchi State would host the national competition since its inception in 1986.

“I wish to say that the Ministry of Religious Affairs, in conjunction with Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and other government agencies, have submitted a budget of N153million for the competition.

“The state government is providing N100 million for this committee so that the rest would be solicited elsewhere,” he said. (NAN)

A new twist into the $1.1million hushpuppi internet scam involving suspended Commander of the Police Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari and fraudster, Ramon Abass aka Hushpuppi and other accomplices emerged at the weekend with the office of the Attorney General issuing new legal advice exonerating Kyari from money laundering allegations.

AGF Malami Says No Evidence Of Money Laundering Against Abba Kyari

The office of the AGF which in its first legal advice admitted that a prima- facie case of money laundering of 33 payments (proceeds of crime) was established by the DIG Joseph Egbunike led Special Investigation Panel against Kyari has now said, there are no links with Kyari following further investigations.

Recall that Kyari and other defendants are currently in court on drugs and money laundering allegations at the Federal High Court Abuja in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/57/2022.

The new legal advice with reference number, DPPA/LA/814/21, written on behalf of the AGF by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar emphasized that the evidence contained in the case diary had no link between DCP Abba Kyari and Hushpuppi.

It said the evidence contained in the case diary ‘was not sufficient to indicate or show that the said monies (N279million) were laundered directly or indirectly by Kyari to disguise their origin’ adding that ‘the police report on the investigation failed to probe the gaps identified in their investigation by the AGF office’.

The advise titled ‘Re: Forwarding of the investigation report of the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Team and request for legal advice with regards to allegations of criminal conspiracy, aiding and abetting Internet fraud, wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering against DCP Abba Kyari’ was addressed to IGP Usman Alkali Baba.

It reads, “I am directed to inform you that after a careful study of the said response wherein you stated that ‘the monies have been traced to Zenith Bank account no. 2255416115 belonging to Usman Ibrahim Waziri; Guaranty Trust Bank account no. 0130665392 belonging to Adekoya Sikiru; Zenith Bank account no. 2080537566 belonging to Hussein Ala and other funds went to Sharon Festus. The monies were withdrawn and utilised by the aforementioned account holders and the lady.

“It is our view that the above response has not linked the suspect, DCP Abba Kyari, to the offence of money laundering as the evidence contained in the case diary is not sufficient to indicate or show that the said monies were laundered directly or indirectly by Kyari to disguise their origin, more so that the aforementioned recipients or receivers exonerated him in their statements as having nothing to do with the monies.”

Consequently, the AGF office advised the IGP and Police management to explore their internal Force Disciplinary organs against Kyari through the Police Service Commission (PSC) which is constitutionally empowered to carry out disciplinary functions for breaching the code of conduct for law enforcement officers by hobnobbing with suspected fraudsters and people of questionable means in his capacity as a senior officer and head of the IRT.

In the new advice, the AGF Officer added that DCP Kyari was also liable to be sanctioned for violating the social media policy of the police by responding to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s indictment on Facebook; breaching the Police Code of Professional Ethics by acting on complaints unilaterally without recourse to established protocol and detaining a suspect, Vincent Chibuzor, for over a month without a valid court order and regards to his fundamental human rights.

Recall that following the rejection of the initial SIP report submitted by the Police headquarters to the Police Service Commission based on the legal advice of the AGF office, the Force headquarters was directed to carry out a new investigation and submit its new findings on February 25 but this was not done.

Police Nab Injured Robbery Gang Member Who Invaded Students’ Hostel In Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a member of a robbery gang that invaded a students’ hostel in the Ipara Remo, in the Remo-North Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Saturday, gave the name of the suspect as Sodiq Yahaya, adding that he was nabbed after being wounded during an exchange of gunshots between the gang and policemen.

Oyeyemi said five other members of the robbery gang escaped with gunshot injuries through the bush.

“Upon the distress call, the DPO, Isara Division, CSP Shobiyi Oluwatoshin, quickly mobilised his men in conjunction with local vigilantes and moved to the scene. On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums opened fire on them and the policemen retaliated. At the end of the encounter, the robbers who have sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries took to their heels and escaped through the bush,” he said.
