2023: Wabara Cautions Abia PDP Over Fielding Ngwa Candidate, Says It’ll Cause Party’s Defeat

''Tinubu's Assertion Of Economic Revival An Insult To Suffering Nigerians'' - Wabara

Former Senate President, and the Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, Dr. Adolphus Wabara, has warned that PDP might get a protest vote in Abia in 2023, should the party fail to cede its governorship ticket to his Ukwa clan or Abia North zone.

He argued that if Ukwa clan should not be considered because it belongs to Abia South senatorial zone where power currently resides, “then power should move back to Abia North where it started from in 1999”.

Wabara specifically warned that any attempt to make another Ngwa man succeed the incumbent Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who is also an Ngwa man would be counterproductive for PDP.

The former Senate President who said he was raising the alarm because of his love for PDP, advised Abia PDP leadership not to toy with the Abia Charter of Equity and zoning arrangement for which the party is known.

He said that anything short of allowing power to come to Ukwa or rotate back to Abia North in 2023 would spell doom for PDP.

Wabara predicted that Abia might fall for the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, should PDP fail to do the right things and on time too.

He advised Abia PDP to borrow a leaf from the party’s national leadership which recently approved to set up a 37-man committee on zoning so as not to jeopardize its electoral fortunes in 2023.

” Zoning is an integral part of PDP. Abia PDP should learn from our national party and respect zoning.

” Our party shall not be doing the right thing at the centre and here somebody will be acting with impunity.

” No single person has the authority to decide the next governor of the state. The party caucus, elders and stakeholders will have to meet.

“Gov. Ikpeazu’s successor may be micro zoned to the Governor but that should only happen after the right thing has been done in line with the constitution of our great party which is macro zoning to Ukwa or Abia North.

” I’m saying this because of my love for our great party PDP which of course enjoys a large followership in Abia. But if the PDP leadership doesn’t do the right thing, the party will get a protest vote in 2023.

” Abians will vote PDP 85% but if the governorship ticket is not ceded to Ukwa or Abia North in line with power rotation arrangement, there will be a protest vote.

” Abia is not ready for Ngwa back to back thing. What they are doing now is exactly why PDP lost Plateau State to APC in 2015. Ukwa or Abia North should produce Ikpeazu’s successor”, Wabara cautioned.

The immediate past Governor of the state and Senator representing Abia Central, Senator Theodore Orji, had penultimate week also declared his total support for power shift to Abia North.

Senator Orji had warned that anybody working against power rotation arrangement which is in tandem with the Abia Charter of Equity would be embarking on a dangerous political voyage.

Similarly, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa who represented Abia North in the eighth senate had advocated the return of power to the zone, saying it would help to engender peace and mutual trust.

The immediate past-Secretary to the State Government SSG, Dr. Eme Okoro, has championed the campaign for power shift to Abia North vowing to resist any attempt to shortchange the zone of its turn to preside over the affairs of the state.

Despite several voices in favour of the power shift to Abia North in 2023, the Ngwa Council of Elders led by Dr. Max Nduaguibe, is, however, vehemently opposed to the agitation, insisting that the Ngwa clan in Abia Central will take over from Ikpeazu.

A number of PDP chieftains from Abia North have also confided in Vanguard that they would sabotage the party’s interest should PDP deny Abia North it’s governorship ticket in 2023.

Former Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice and had an assist in his first ever El Clasico, as Barcelona hammered bitter rivals Real Madrid 4-0 at the Bernabeu.

The last time Barca tasted victory against Madrid was 2nd March 2019, a 1-0 win at the Bernabeu.

And prior to Sunday’s game Madrid had won the last five meetings between them and Barca.

Aubameyang gave Barca the lead on 29 minutes as he headed Ousmane Dembele’s cross from the right past Thibaut Courtois.

In the 38th minute Ronald Araujo put Barca 2-0 up with a powerful header from a Dembele corner.

Just two minutes into the second half Ferran Torres made it 3-0 with an emphatic finish after Aubameyang teed him up with a clever back heel.

And on 51 minutes Aubameyang got his second and Barca’s fourth thanks to a lovely chipped effort with his left off Torres’ assist.

The goal was initially flagged for offside but after consultation with VAR, it was awarded.

The win saw Barca move up to third on 54 points and 12 points behind leaders Madrid.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Monday, explained why the former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, is still in detention.

Why Ex-Governor Obiano Is Still In Custody— EFCC Boss, Bawa

Bawa, who spoke to journalists on the sideline of the 5th Annual General Assembly (AGA) meeting of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), taking place in Abuja, disclosed that Obiano had yet to perfect the conditions the EFCC stipulated for his release on bail.

Asked why the Commission has kept the former governor in its custody, beyond the period allowed by the Constitution, Bawa, said: “He has been granted bail and we are waiting for him to perfect the bail conditions and everything is going well”.

It will be recalled that Obiano was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, last Thursday, few hours after he handed over to his successor, Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The anti-graft agency subsequently transferred him to its office in Abuja for further interrogation.

The former governor, who had been on EFCC’s watchlist, was among other things, accused of misappropriating public funds totalling about N42billion.

Meanwhile, the EFCC Chairman, in an address he delivered at the NACIWA event, said the Commission had within last year, secured an unprecedented conviction record of 2, 220 and recoveries in excess of N152billion, $386milion, among other recoveries.

“The Commission has also embarked on several reforms aimed at strengthening the institution, including the development of a reporting application named Eagle Eye, to ease the reporting of incidences of economic and financial cromes by the public.

“The EFCC has further developed a five-year Strategic Plan that guides its operational approach in law enforcement action”.

The NACIWA Assembly was co-hosted by both the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC.

The Kaduna State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Kaura and Jema’a Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

This comes hours after bandits attacked Kagoro Chiefdom in Kaura LGA, killing at least 13 villagers while several properties were destroyed.

Mr Samuel Aruwan, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, announced this in a statement on Monday.

“Following advice from security agencies, the Kaduna State government has declared a 24-hour curfew in Jema’a and Kaura local government areas with immediate effect,” he said.

“This is to assist the security agencies to stabilise the situation in the areas, save lives and property, and enable the restoration of law and order.”

The commissioner condemned the violence and all acts of lawlessness that have occurred in the area, saying the government has given the security agencies full authorisation to enforce the curfew.

He called on residents in the affected local government areas to cooperate with the security agencies in a bid to restore peace and uphold law and order in the areas.

Aruwan also assured them that the government was monitoring the situation closely, stressing the need to avoid actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

Residents told Channels Television that the assailants came in a large number on Sunday after which they stuck.

Apart from the villagers killed, they were said to have ambushed and killed three soldiers who responded to a distress call and set ablaze scores of houses in Kagoro.

The Chairman of Kaura LGA, Matthias Siman, who also confirmed the attack to Channels Television, put the figure of houses destroyed at over 100.

According to him, the bandits invaded the community in three 18-seater buses at about 7pm on Sunday and operated till 11pm.

Siman said 13 corpses have been recovered so far while search and rescue operations were ongoing in the general area.

He also identified the three soldiers killed as operatives attached to Operation Safe Haven who came to repel the attack.

Justice Inyang Ekwo struck out the motion after Chukwuma Ma-Chukwu Ume, SAN, counsel for Umahi and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, prayed the court for the withdrawal of the motion, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s lawyer, Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, did not oppose the application.

The motion for stay of execution was marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/920/21, between PDP Vs. INEC and three others.
Justice Inyang Ekwo had, on March 8, in a judgment, ordered Umahi; his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, and 16 lawmakers to vacate their office and seats, following their defection from the PDP to All Progressives Congress (APC).

The judge also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to immediately receive from the PDP, the names of its candidates to replace them, among others.

On March 10, Governor Umahi and others had sought an order of the FHC Abuja, staying the execution of its judgment directing them to vacate their offices over their defection to another political party.

In a motion on notice filed by Ume, the applicants also prayed the court to stay the execution of its order directing INEC to receive another name in their place or hold a governorship election in accordance with Section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution, pending the hearing and determination of the appeal dated and filed on March 9 by the appellants, among others.

Ume also sought a withdrawal of the stay of execution motion filed on behalf of the lawmakers marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1041 between PDP Vs. INEC and 20 others.

At the resumed hearing, Ume informed the court of his intention to withdraw the two motions for stay of execution dated March 9 on the grounds that an appeal had been entered at the Court of Appeal on the matter.

Counsel for the PDP, Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, did not oppose the application. In a short ruling, Justice Ekwo struck out the matter.

EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, who disclosed this to journalists on Monday in Abuja said the former governor was cooperating with the commission to perfect the bail conditions.

According to him, there was nothing political about the former governor’s arrest.

“There is nothing political about the investigation. You know what the EFCC stands for,” Bawa said. “We investigate crimes, we look at people that have committed crimes and we link it up together and then we go to court. That is all we have been doing and that is what we will continue to do.

“We have been accused of media trial. But we will continue to do our investigation professionally.

“He has been granted bail and we are waiting for him to perfect his bail conditions he has been cooperating with us and everything is going on well,” he said.

Obiano was arrested on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos while trying to board a flight to Texas, United States.

The EFCC had in November last year placed the former governor on a watchlist.

In a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service dated November 15, 2021, the Commission requested the Service to place the governor on a watchlist and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the International airports and other points of entry and exit.

The guardian gathered the former governor was arrested for misappropriating N5bn Sure-P and N37 billion Security Vote funds, which was withdrawn in cash.

Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state.
