Okoye who was among players still being expected will now sit out the two-legged affair set for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium this Friday and the Moshood Abiola Stadium next week Tuesday.

The illness which was not disclosed means Okoye joins Leicester City duo of Ademola Lookman and Wilfred Ndidi on the ‘uncertain/unavailable list’. Lookman was absent at the weekend over fitness issues when the Foxes beat Brentford in the Premier League.

Enyimba International’s John Noble will come in Okoye’s stead.

The Plateau State House of Assembly has declared the seat of the Member representing Jos East State constituency in the House, Abok Ayuba vacant.

Plateau Assembly Declares 2 Seats Vacant

Abok, the embattled Speaker of the House had been at loggerhead with some of his colleagues who connived and removed him as Speaker in a controversial circumstance and the matter is in court.

His seat was declared vacant at the plenary presided by Yakubu Sanda who is acknowledged as the Speaker of the House.

Recalled that the controversy in the House had led to the vandalization of the State Assembly and the lawmakers had long relocated to the Old Government House at Rayfield.

Last weekend, Abok decamped from the All Progressives Congress APC to the People’s Democratic Party, PDP,  his Media Assistant, Itse Kaze in a statement on March 18th, said, Abok officially tendered his letter of resignation from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), while presenting a letter of intent, seeking to return to his earlier party, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at the party’s Jos East Local Government Secretariat at Angware.

The decision to declare his seat vacant came on the heel of a letter from the State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, urging the Speaker to declare Abok’s seat vacant following his defection which the Party said was contrary to section 109 (1) of the  Nigerian Constitution.

Sanda also declared vacant, the Rukuba/Irigwe State constituency seat as the former occupant of the seat, Musa Agah, contested and won the recently conducted Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency bye-election.

Defection: Imo Speaker, 16 Other Lawmakers Face Sack

There are possibilities that 17 members of the Imo State House of Assembly, who at various times defected from the parties under which they were elected, may vacate their office.

Defection: Imo Speaker, 16 Other Lawmakers Face Sack

This followed the recent sacking of Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi and some lawmakers who defected with him from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – on whose ticket they were elected – to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Another court had also sacked 20 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly who defected with Governor Ben Ayade from the PDP to APC.

Encouraged by these developments, the plaintiffs in Imo have dusted up a suit they filed against the defection of the lawmakers in July 2020.

The suit was filed by representatives of Legal Defence and Assistance Project, Chijioke Nwachukwu, Chibuzo Ekene and Mmerole Modestus (the plaintiffs) against the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Clerk of the House, Independent National Electoral Commission, Attorney General of the Federation, Hon Collins Chiji, Hon. Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Uju Onwudiwe and 15 others.

In suit No. FHC/Ow/27/2020 filed by their counsel, Nath Epele and Co., the plaintiffs asked the Federal High Court sitting in Owerri to declare the seat of the defendants vacant by virtue of the fact that they defected from the party that elected them into another party.

Former Speaker Collins Chiji representing Isiala Mbano had left his former party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) under whose platform he got to the House and defected to PDP which won the 2019 governorship election in the state in order to grab the Speakership.

However, a few days after January 14, 2019, Supreme Court judgment, which sacked Emeka Ihedioha and declared Hope Uzodimma of the APC as governor, Chiji, along with other members, moved to the APC to retain his position.

Chiji and majority leader, Mr. Chigozie Nwaneri, announced their defection on the floor of the House, while others wrote letters of defection.

Others who were elected under the Action Alliance (AA) also dumped the party and joined the APC.

They are; Chyna Amara Iwuanyanwu (Nwangele LGA); Innocent Egwim (Ideato North LGA); Chidiebere Ogbunikpa (Okigwe LGA); Obinna Okwara (Nkwerre LGA); Paul Emeziem (Onuimo LGA); Ekene Nnodim (Orsu LGA); Duru Johnson (Ideato South LGA); Ngozi Obiefule (Isu) and Herculus Okoro (Ohaji-Egbema) and the minority leader, Ekene Nnodumele (APGA Orsu).

A few days later, Eddy Obinna (Aboh Mbaise), Samuel Otibe (Ahiazu Mbaise), and Uche Ogbagu (Ikeduru) all of PDP, defected to APC.

Some months later, the leadership of the House was changed as Mr. Paul Emeziem of Onuimo replaced Chiji as Speaker, while Iwuanyanwu became the deputy speaker.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Senate Passes Controversial Peace Corps Bill

Senators were apparently divided on Tuesday over a call for the Senate to debate a Federal High Court ruling that declared Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act as illegal.

Senate Passes Bills To Establish Federal Varsities In FCT, Rivers

Trouble started when Senator George Sekibo from Rivers State, while relying on Orders 10 and 11 of the Senate Standing Rules, led his colleagues through the various functions of the three arms of government.

He argued that the ruling by the Court, which nullified the action of the National Assembly was a bad precedent that must not be allowed to stand.

He said if allowed to stand, future actions of the Parliament would be challenged in Courts by interested parties.

Sekibo urged his colleagues to suspend other legislative activities earmarked for the sitting and debate the issue.

He said: “This issue us very important. Those who went to court to challenge our action, didn’t include us as an interested party. We were not even aware that a matter was even in court.

“Suddenly, we were told that a judgment was given and the Federal Government immediately gazetted it.

“This is dangerous and we need to take a position immediately. This is important to guide against such occurrences.”

The debate on the matter was however deferred to Wednesday by the Senate following divergent views on the said ruling.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagged a brace with Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres also scoring as the Blaugrana recorded their first win against Carlos Ancelotti’s side for the first time since 2019.

Barcelona also cut the gap on Real Madrid to 12 points with a game in hand and 10 matches still to play.

They are Barcelona Humiliate Real Madrid To Claim First El Clasico Win In Three Years now just three points behind Sevilla in second, who they face after the March international break, but hauling in Madrid has proven tougher.

“I don’t know if we can win the title, we can’t rule out anything,” Xavi said after the game.

“Maybe we’re a bit late, but this is a very big win for us.

“We’ve won tonight — and we also have the better head-to-head record [against Madrid, which decides the title if both teams finish level on points] — but it is going to be very difficult.

“Madrid have only lost three league games. They have to lose three more. We must keep working hard. The first objective is to qualify for the Champions League.”

Founding National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chekwas Okorie, has identified a major threat to the pursuit of Igbo presidency in 2023.
2023: Atiku, Tinubu Identified As Threats To Igbo Presidency - Chekwas Okorie
Okorie said the presidential ambitions of Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar possess threats to Igbos 2023 presidency.

He expressed doubt over an Igbo man clinching the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, with Tinubu and Atiku still in the race.

Okorie explained that members of the parties from the southeast are not major stakeholders.

“It is not looking good for us in the South East with Atiku and Tinubu and even someone like the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, declaring their interests to contest for the office while the Igbo dream about having their turn.

“Political parties are owned by certain individuals who in turn invite members of the public to join in order to win elections and I do not see any Igbo man in APC or PDP belonging to the core stakeholders’ forum of any of them,” he told reporters on Monday in Abuja.
