The Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has advanced reasons why he is seeking to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the expiration of his tenure in 2023.

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal

He clarified that his ambition to become Nigeria’s president and also run the office is not predicated upon the zoning of the quest and other isolated indices.

Tambuwal noted that his aspiration was based on the collective interest of all Nigerians whose existence and subsistence is at stake now

According to him, Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, thus require the communal resolve of all to save it from sinking completely.

The governor stated this on Sunday when the Concerned Citizens of Nigeria presented the N40 million forms purchased for him to indicate his interest in running for the number one job in the country next year under the auspices of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“As our situation is in Nigeria today and in times like this, when the situation is so dire and the country is in distress, members of that community or country must come together and put whatever differences they have aside to save the country.

“It calls for every concerted effort from every and all concerned citizen to put their hands together to rescue it from an imminent collapse,” he said.

Lamenting the devaluation of the naira, insecurity, corruption economic downturns, unemployment; inflation, and every aspect of life that is failing, Tambuwal said his seeking the position of President is not an overbearing ambition, but a quest informed by the need to rescue the country from its quagmire.

He explained that having foreseen what later became the abysmal failure of the All Progressives Congress’ misrule about two years after it came to power, he and his allies left the party for the PDP.

“It behooves on us, as leaders, as responsible leaders of this country, to once again, come together to rescue Nigeria. It would be too bad for Nigeria if APC remains in charge of affairs after 2023.

“Things are rather getting worse. That situation that demanded us to rise to that challenge of working towards changing the defective APC government at the center has not changed. Things are rather getting worse and bad,” he said.

Noting that seeking the presidency is a “collective thing”, he said “no single individual can do it alone. No zone can do it alone. No state can do it alone. No tribe can do it alone. No members of a particular faith can do it alone.

“Nigeria is our common heritage. It is our country. All of us must be hands-on in saving our country,” he submitted.

He expressed gratitude to the group who presented him with the forms they brought and assured them that he will make his stand known after he concludes his ongoing consultation on the matter.

“You are right. I have friends from across the length and breadth of this country. You are right. I understand the federal structure of this country. I quite appreciate the complexity of the Nigerian state. I have the requisite experience, by the grace of God, to seek the office of the President.

“As I said, I am still consulting. I will come back to you after my consultation very soon,” he said.

In his remarks, Akinboro said they purchased the form for the governor in recognition of his sterling and the need to rescue the country from its current bad situation.

Describing Tambuwal as a detribalized Nigerian with no zealous attachment to his faith, Akinboro added that he is a person with integrity who can be trusted to lead the country forward.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the transfer of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari, and six others that are facing drug trafficking charges with him, to the Kuje Correctional Center.

Court Sends Abba Kyari, 6 Others To Kuje Prison

Trial Justice Emeka Nwike ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to transfer the Defendants to prison custody, shortly after he denied them bail.

The court held that the NDLEA placed sufficient materials before it to warrant the refusal of bail to Kyari and his Co-Defendants.

The court equally denied bail to former members of the IRT, ACP Sunday Ubia, Inspector Simon Agirgba, and Inspector John Nuhu.

Other Defendants in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/57/2022, are; ASP Bawa James, as well as two drug traffickers that were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwane.

Meanwhile, Justice Nwite ordered accelerated trial of the Defendants, even as it fixed April 28 for the review of facts in respect of the case against Umeibe and Ezenwane.

It will be recalled that Umeibe and Ezenwanne, who were cited as the 6th and 7th Defendants in the charge, had on March 7, when they were arraigned alongside DCP Kyari, pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charge against them.

The court had on Monday, listened to arguments from both the Prosecution and the Defence, on NDLEA’s application for the review of facts in respect of the two Defendants, to enable their conviction and sentencing.

Kyari’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN, had contended that it would be prejudicial to his client for facts of the case to be reviewed and decision reached on it, while the trial is still subsisting.

He made reference to cases where Defendants, out of ignorance, pleaded guilty to a charge against them.

“It is not in the interest of justice for the facts to be reviewed while the trial is still ongoing”, he argued.

More so, Agabi, SAN, noted that both Umeibe and Ezenwanne were also mentioned in some counts in the charge that involved Kyari and the other accused police officers.

The NDLEA had in the charge before the court, accused DCP Kyari and the other four officers of conspiracy, obstruction and dealing in cocaine worth 17.55 kilograms.

It alleged that Kyari and his men unlawfully tampered with 21.25kg worth of cocaine that were seized from the two apprehended drug traffickers, Umeibe and Ezenwanne.

The police officers were said to have committed the offence between January 19 and 25, 2022, at the office of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) IRT, Abuja, in connivance with one ASP John Umoru (now at large), contrary to section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act, CAP N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Kyari was said to have attempted to bribe a senior officer of the NDLEA with $61, 400. 00 at a restaurant in Abuja to prevent the testing of part of the cocaine that was seized from the two arrested drug pushers.

On the other hand, the agency alleged that the duo of Umeibe and Ezenwanne, conspired with one IK that is currently at large, to import 21.35kg of cocaine into the country without lawful authority and knowingly possessed same, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 11(d) of the NDLEA Act, CAP N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to Russia’s attempt to censor his interview with independent Russian journalists, saying Moscow was “frightened” by journalists “who can tell the truth.”

“Well, if there’s such reaction, then we are doing everything right. Means they are nervous.”

The lengthy video interview, posted in full on Zelensky’s Telegram channel, featured questions from some of Russia’s most prominent independent journalists, including author Mikhail Zygar and Tikhon Dzyadko, the editor-in-chief of the recently shuttered channel TV Rain.

The companies that departed “deserve the respect of Ukrainians and people around the world. After all, indifference and silence are complicity,” said Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President.
“Our goal is not a single penny to the budget of the aggressor country.”
