Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, the 300L student of Abia State University Uturu expressed gratitude to God for sparing the lives of his mother, Mrs. Ogba and senior sister who also ate from the same suya that allegedly caused the death of his father and siblings.

He told ABN TV that the death of his father who is the breadwinner of the family created a big vacuum, noting that life has been difficult since this incident.

The student of Public Health said he has remained in school on the account of good gesture of individuals and groups who assist to ensure he does not drop out over fees payment.

While expressing gratitude to them, he appealed for assistance to establish a more sustainable means of livelihood, saying he does not wish to depend on stipends from the public for survival.

He expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity of another year in life, wishing that pains of yesterday shall be a cornerstone for a lasting future joy.

ABN TV had reported how Mr. Sunday Ogba had bought the popular barbecue last year which turned out to be the last for him.

Apart from losing his life, he lost two children in the ill fated suya and fruit juice.

Also, four children of a family friend, Chibuzor Ikwunze, of Umuagu Ohuhu in Umuahia North who had visited also died from the incident.

Children aged between 3 to 12 were laid to rest last year amidst tears of sorrow and anguish.

The House of Representatives Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, on Thursday, said Nigerians must be allowed to take up arms and defend themselves against terrorists.

He advocated for the bearing of arms when the lawmakers debated, on the floor of the House, the growing insecurity in the country, during which emotions ran high in the chamber.

This is after a member of the House, Shehu Balarabe, moved a motion of urgent public importance on the killings in Kaduna.

The majority leader said, “I think Nigerians, at this moment, should be allowed to also take arms. Nigerians must be allowed to take arms in defence of their innocent souls; to defend their hard-earned resources and properties, because it is like a monumental failure. If the security agencies have failed, then Nigerians should not be failed; Nigerians should not be seen as failures.

“Let Nigerians organise themselves in the name of civil defence. Let them organise and arrange the defence of their own innocent souls. If the responsibility of the government and the security agencies cannot be carried out democratically, everyone has cause to defend themselves.

“Nigerians should no longer be running away from attack(ers); Nigerians should no longer be running away from banditry in the face of helplessness when the government and security agencies are failing in their basic responsibilities.”

Ado-Doguwa also took a swipe at the leaders of the nation’s security architecture for failing to answer the invitation by the leadership of the House on Wednesday over the recent attack on the Kaduna International Airport and an Abuja-Kaduna train.

“The committee that was set by this House to interface and engage with security agencies must be taken with all sense of seriousness. And if any of them fails to come, we will enforce (sic) the wrath of the law on him, because we have the instrumentality of the parliament as an institution to summon anyone by hook or crook,” he stated.

There was pandemonium along Kaduna-Abuja highway when bandits, in a large number, crossed over the ever-busy road.

The bandits headed towards western part of the main road shooting sporadically.

ABN TV gathered that the gunshots forced motorists to make emergency U-turn around 3:pm, even though there was no report of abductions.

Sources along the highway told our correspondent that the bandits passed through a community called Kwari village near Kasarami area.

A community leader, who craved anonymity, confirmed to ABN TV that they heard gunshots.

“When we heard gunshots around 3pm, we sighted them appearing from eastern part of the road, heading West. They were in large numbers.”

“They didn’t block the road; they only crossed over on motorcycles, but they were many. I’m not aware if the bandits abducted any traveller,” he said.

Shehu Sani, an activist and a former lawmaker, also tweeted about the presence of the bandits on the highway.

“Just got a distress call that bandits in large numbers have again blocked the Kaduna-Abuja road this afternoon. Travellers are speedily turning backward.”

But the State Government, through Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, clarified that bandits did not operate on the highway.

Aruwan said the buzz in circulation is false and was presented by a group of social media enthusiasts who celebrate negative news.

“The preliminary operational feedback showed that fleeing bandits escaping a military onslaught attempted to pass through a narrow corridor around Kasarami general area of Kaduna-Abuja road.”

“The troops, on receiving this intelligence, hurriedly moved to the location and engaged them in the adjoining forest,” he said.

He said the State Government will update members of the general public when more detailed feedback is received.

He said Kaduna State Government does not deny the existence of security challenges, and continues to work assiduously with relevant military and security agencies.

The Nigerian Army has accused the soldier purportedly abandoned by his colleagues in a viral video of cowardice.

It said it was the soldier who absconded during operation with his colleagues and not the other way round.

The Director Army Public Relations Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement, noted the video was a misrepresentation of what transpired between the soldier and his colleagues.

He said: “The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a viral video making the rounds on the social media, where a soldier on Wednesday, 30 March 2022 claimed to have been abandoned by his colleagues during operations.

“Contrary to the claims and impression created by the soldier in the video footage, preliminary investigations have revealed that the video footage was a deliberate attempt to shield himself from being accused of cowardice, having abandoned his colleagues during an ongoing clearance operation in Gurara, Niger State”.

He added: “It could be recalled that troops of the NA, recently carried out a clearance operation in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State. Disappointingly, during an encounter, the said soldier abandoned his colleagues and absconded in an outright display of cowardice and possible sabotage, which negate the precepts of the military profession.

“Sensing the gravity of his action and its consequences, the soldier surreptitiously uploaded the video online in a calculated attempt to whip-up public sentiment and cover up his act of cowardice. The soldier’s action amounts to a betrayal of the esprit de corps and comradary that are synonymous with a military unit and fighting formation, particularly during operations. The soldier’s conduct is therefore an aberration and against the ethics and core values of the military profession.

“The video footage is thus, in all intent, and purpose a misrepresentation of what actually transpired between the soldier and his colleagues.

“The soldier has rejoined his unit and further investigations are currently ongoing to unravel the reasons behind his unprofessional conduct”.

The running mate to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Peter Obi, has picked the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms to contest for the 2023 Presidency.

Obi is now set to rival his former boss, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who had earlier obtained form to vie for the same position.

The form was purchased by the Like Minds (LM) lead by Ekene Nwakuche their leader.

Speaking shortly after purchasing the forms, Nwakuche said they are a group of young Nigerian professionals that feel the country is not going in the right direction and needs “a seasoned technocrat that can steer the affairs of the country in the right direction.”

He said if the country can cut down the cost of governance, things will be better “and we believe the person that can do that is Peter Obi”.

The group comprising of professionals, businessman, public servants, different category of contractors, artisans said, “We want the country to move forward. We think Peter Obi can steer it forward and we believe in him because we’ve seen what he did in Anambra when he was a governor. And we have heard him talk, he has the wealth of experience to lead Nigeria to the promised land.

“We are doing this because of our children. Because if we don’t get it right this time around, this 2023, I don’t know where we’ll be. Each and everyone of us here knows how the country is; and we want a better Nigeria. I believe that if you are from Nigeria, be it from the north, south, east, west, you want a better Nigeria.”

The leader said they are working with other groups like Take Back Nigeria, which has promised to mobilise 10 million votes for PDP and Peter Obi.

“The Nigerian dream we’re all looking for can be achievable and the only person that we believe that can give us the Nigerian dream is no other person than Mr. Peter Gregory Obi,” he said.

Wilfred Ndidi Out For Rest Of Season With Knee Injury

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi will miss the rest of the 2021/22 season due to a knee injury according to his club manager Brendan Rodgers.

According to Rodgers, the Leicester City midfielder is expected to be in recovery till June after undergoing surgery on his knee.

Ndidi picked up the knee injury in Leicester City’s UEFA Europa Conference League Round-of-16 second leg victory over Rennes on Thursday, March 17 at the Roazhon Park in France.

Rodgers confirmed Ndidi’s long-term absence on Thursday afternoon during the Foxes’ pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Manchester United.

The Leicester City manager said: ‘Wilfred Ndidi unfortunately, will be out for the season, it’s a shame for us but he’ll get ready for next season. It’s unfortunate.

“He’s been a brilliant player for me in my time here. He picked up a nasty injury that he’s had to have surgery on and he’ll recover now until June.”

Ndidi has played 31 games for Leicester City in all competitions this season, including 18 starts from 19 appearances in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has made 60 tackles, winning 53% of those along with 42 interceptions, 52 clearances, and 165 recoveries in the league this season.

DStv/Gotv Tariff Hike: Tribunal Dismisses Case Against MultiChoice

A Competition and Consumer Protection (CCP) Tribunal sitting in Abuja has restrained Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited from increasing its tariffs and cost of products and services scheduled to begin on April 1.

The three-member tribunal, presided over by Thomas Okosun, gave the order following an ex-parte motion moved by Festus Onifade, a legal practitioner, on behalf of himself and the Coalition of Nigeria Consumers.

Other members of the tribunal include Sola Salako Ajulo and Ibrahim EL-Yakubu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the suit marked: CCPT/OP/1/2022, Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited and Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) are 1st and 2nd respondents respectively.

The motion ex-parte filed by the applicants on March 29 was brought pursuant to Section 39 (1) & (2) of FCCPC Act 2018; Order 26, Rule 5 (2), (3) & 26 Rule 6 (1) & (2) Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019 and Section 47(a), (b), (c),(d), of Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018.

The applicants had prayed for “an order of interim injunction restraining the 1st defendants/respondents, either by itself, agents, representatives, officers or privies, howsoever described, from carrying out the impending increase in tariffs and cost of its products and services intended to take effect from 1st April, 2022, until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice already filed before this tribunal.

“An order of the Honourable Tribunal mandating the 1st defendant/respondents to maintain status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

“And for such further order or other orders as this Honourable Tribunal may deem fit to make in the circumstance.”

In the ruling, the tribunal ordered Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited to stop the planned hike in tariffs and cost of its products and services pending the hearing and determination of the motion.

“The 1st defendant/respondent is hereby restrained, either by itself, agents, representatives, officers or privies, howsoever described, from carrying out the impending increase in tariffs and cost of its products and services intended to take effect from 1st April, 2022 until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice already filed before this Honourable Tribunal.

“The 1st defendant/respondent is hereby mandated to maintain status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice,” the tribunal ruled.

The matter was adjourned until April 11 for the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
“All parties in this suit are to appear before this Honourable Tribunal on the 11th day of April, 2022,” it ruled.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that he expects additional offensive Russian actions that will be “bringing even more suffering.”

Speaking at a news conference in Brussels for the secretary general’s 2021 Annual Report, Stoltenberg said that according to intelligence, “Russian units are not withdrawing but repositioning. Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce its offensive in the Donbas region. At the same time, Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities.”

“We can expect additional offensive actions bringing even more suffering,” Stoltenberg said.

“We have heard the recent statements that Russia will scale down military operations around Kyiv and in northern Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said. “But Russia has repeatedly lied about its intentions, so we can only judge Russia on its actions, not on its words.”

He called on Russia to “end this senseless war, withdraw all its troops and engage in talks in good faith.”

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, on Wednesday blasted service chiefs and the ministers of relevant agencies over their failure to honour the lawmakers’ invitation.

The lawmakers summoned the service chiefs and ministers of relevant ministries and agencies to appear before it in conjunction with the chairmen of the committees on aviation, security and intelligence, police affairs, army, airforce, defence, and land transport following the recent attack on the Abuja-Kaduna rail line.

But they sent their representatives, an act that infuriated Wase.

“We do not have any doubt regarding your capacity and your role. As operational officers, you have the intel in terms of what has to be done, but I’m constrained as the deputy speaker to continue the meeting because the accounting officers are the ones that are supposed to be here while you give them the necessary support,” he said.

“I am saying with a heavy heart. No matter the assignment our generals are handling, I believe the parliament requires a listening ear. This is the house of the people. I am not happy expressing my disappointment.

“In all the agencies, none of all the chief executives that were invited came. Maybe we are considered to be jokers, but we are not jokers.”

The deputy speaker, therefore, declined to meet the representatives, insisting that the service chiefs must appear in person to explain the circumstances surrounding the attacks.

The meeting was thus adjourned to Thursday.

 

Suspension From World Soccer Is “Unfair,” Says Russian Football Union

Alexey Sorokin, a member of the Russian Football Union delegation, criticized Russia’s suspension from world soccer on Thursday at the FIFA 72nd Congress in Doha, Qatar, and said it was unfair.

Speaking to journalists before the start of the congress, the former FIFA Council member said he found it “strange” that the Russian team is not allowed to play international events.

Some context: Russia is currently suspended from club and international football by UEFA and FIFA “until further notice” as a result of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, pending the outcome of a Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal.

“We feel that our football players, football lovers have been unfairly treated; they have nothing to do with this,” said Sorokin, a day before Friday’s 2022 World Cup draw.

Earlier this month, the Russian Football Union declared interest in hosting the European Championship in either 2028 or 2032 — despite the country’s football ban.
